Whale 31st July 2008
Waves are pretty good this morning. Damn cold morning though, so the run across the sand to the water’s edge was torturous.
South Bondi had 3-4 footers – some of which were quite hollow. But its fickle with a super strong rip. (beware beginners – you’ll end up in Africa)
Looks like a perfect all-day-offshore…so you really should think about taking off and surfing…but somewhere with decent banks (not Bondi). The charts are showing a swell increase tomorrow so we’re in for a few good days of surfing. Great weekend to get out of town.
Chasing the Whale
The talk of the morning was a huge whale parked in the break at Tamarama (7:05am) amongst surfers. Well it’s just rocked up into Bondi at lunchtime frolicking with the surfers. It’s unbelievable how close to shore it is. 3 choppers circling…camera crews everywhere…just another day of excitement in the big bay.

Uge,
How wonderful!! A whale in the bay at Bondi really makes me feel great about the world.
Thanks for letting us in on the news! Such great pics – are you going to follow it up the coast?
You must just love what you do for a living!

Uge,
Your photos keep getting better and better. The surf looks like you could touch it – so much definition. Love it!
P.S can u get a shot of the whale underwater?

Hi
Just a technical question. When using the 15mm fisheye for your inside wave shots ,what distance do you set your focus on? What ISO and apeture do you set the camera on?

My wakanaka is in Bondi right now and i shuld have listened to her advice. We could have been having a yogi tchai together by the beach witnessing these amazing scenes, what can i say????
Nature doing what it does best, thnks to those who captured the scenes (wonderful) and hope more whales on the way. To wakanaka…… hang on, will be there shortly for a bit of whale watching.
GREAT!!!!!!!

Sorry Michael, I can’t give away all my learnings over the past few years…if you’re shooting in the water – get out there and all will come to you.
