‘Beachobatics’ Bondi Jitterbug: George Caddy 29th November 2008
On a hot summer’s day down at Bondi you see all walks of life. Bat’n'Ball in euro speedos seems to dominate the south end of Bondi whilst drums, topless bathers and dancers can dominate the north. Last summer a pack of Latino men played the bongos in bright white undies…kinda strange really…
George Caddy was a photographer who documented Bondi beach in the 1930s where ‘Beachobatics’ was big. What’s that? Acrobatics on the beach. In the 30’s people entertained themselves on Bondi by forming human poses. Caddy took a beautiful array of imagery of these formations and there is a exhibition currently on at the NSW State Library from Nov 29. More Information
