10x world champ, Kelly Slater

Kelly Slater at Tamarama

What a great week of surfing in Sydney. Yet another magical day – 3rd day in a row….ah yes, sunshine, 3 foot clean waves from a easterly swell, and now a grooming northerly. Gold.

It’s not every day Kelly Slater’s in town…well, he dropped in last night, surfed Solander on dark and popped down to Tamarama for 2 waves just a second ago…Quite frustrating to watch a 10 time world champ surf your local and get burnt by everyone….kooky flotsam and jetsam blocking sections…I think Kelly must have feared for his life and paddled in. Accompanying Kelly was Taj…just like the final of Quiky Pro these two guns tore gaping holes in Tama (and it was pretty darn good Tama too! In fact many places would be going off today again)

Have a good day. Hope you get a few, :: uge

  1. can’t believe i missed kelly surf my local break today.

what’s the chance of ever seeing him out there again.

    SPEWIN

  2. I’ve never felt this sh*t after an aquabumps update… can’t believe i missed out on seeing Kelly at my own frigging beach.

    This is utter crap.

  3. Careful Uge, it’s that flotsam and jetsom that put food on your table remember… And in fairness, who surfing isn’t a little on the whiffy side when KS is in the water?

    1. Hi Andrew, it was just such a shame to have 3 per wave dropping in on the champ. Everyone burns everyone at Tama we all know that so pretty STD stuff. Were you out there?

  4. No i was stinking it up down at Maroubra.
Would have enjoyed dropping in on a 10 time world champ though.

    1. Hi Andrew, not sure what’s going on there (whether there is an impersonator or not)…by the way, you’re one of my favourite photographers. I know your work well, and bought the Oculi book recently. it’s amazing. Nice one, uge

  5. Uge I agree with you. It’s bloody discusting watching these idiots at Tama dropping in,wether it be 10 time world champ or a local. They seemed to of forgotten basic surf etiquette. Andrew u sound like u could be one of these people by the sound of your last comment

  6. Well. We all know who to blame for the kooks and jetsam flocking to waves when they’re pumping even though they don’t know what they’re doing. I believe this blog has something to do with it…. stick to Bondi and there wouldn’t be an issue.

    1. Hi Anika – It’s been crowded all week – just like usual, and I haven’t taken 1 foto of Tamarama until lunchtime today (well, kelly is a big drawcard). Please explain. how does that work?

  7. It’s till no excuse for cooks who do live hear and call themselves locals dropping in. I really don’t think Uge posting photos of tama when there is already is already 150 guys out is the reason for cooks dropping in!!

  8. Fair enough Uge… you’re off the hook for this week. Bottom line is Bondi can handle crowds (and said flotsam). Tamma can’t. When you have thousands of people reading your blog everyday, you might consider raising awareness (and education) regarding the quickly dying art of ‘surf etiquette’. Especially when spruiking the smaller beaches’ breaks…

    1. Tama has always been pretty busy in the northerly winds + east swell combo. Mainly due to the fact that options are very limited in this common combo of conditions. Wrap a main road around the bay, where everyone can see the surf – bingo, you’ve got a huge crowd on a very small beach. But yes, I agree with everyone, the etiquette is very bad out there. Real bad.

  9. Awesome Uge! Thanks for nice endorsement and for shelling out for the book. Dunno who the impersonator is but they’re pretty much on the money with the “stinking it up at Maroubra” comment! Nice ‘ours’ pics btw – nice to see it shot in some nice light. (a first???) Though it almost makes the place look inviting..

  10. Man thats just embarrassing, I think RESPECT went out with the tide a long time ago round these parts. SAD guys.

  11. After reading all these comments the south coast feels like a million miles from Tamma. I surfed a sick point yesterday with a maximum 8 other smiling, peaceful and friendly surf nuts!

  12. i agree with everyone else,
so stoked to see some good waves at Tama this morning, went out and caught 3 waves in two hours and was burned on two of them
I dont like to get mad in the surf, but everyone would have a better time if we shared…
but i guess thats what happens living in the big smoke.

  13. Awesome. I also captured Kelly Slater today at Tamarama. The proof: redir.ec/slater
Same wave, different angle. That was my 1st surf shoot ever. I wish I could stay longer in Sydney. Dont want to go back to Germany 🙁

  14. Gutted! Would have been stoked just to witness the champ rip-up the local! That is my favourite update to date and the day before was almost as good too. I would be on the look-out for ‘the king’ to make another appearance in the next couple of days as competition in WA doesn’t begin until the 3rd of April…

  15. Seems such a shame for everyone, kooks and all, that a little respect can’t be shown in the water and enjoyment of great waves shared. The good thing about the Tama drawcard was that Bondi was relatively uncrowded. We were catching waves all over the place and (grinning madly) I’m happy to say I had one of my best surfs ever! Barrelled three times and rode one from South to middle with guys cheering along the way. Thank you Mother Nature! Thank you Bondi!

  16. Agree with Winston. 100 surfers. 3 waves per set. Do the sums. While everyone was peddling their egos at “secret spot” Tama we were catching bombs in between the straight handers at Southy, esp Wed eve. It’s funny to witness all this as a north side boy who’s made the transition. If you want waves to yourself, stop the complaining and get out of Sydney. I know where I’ll be this weekend..

  17. hi Uge great shot of ours. did u use ur 1D??
what setting and lens did u use??
thanx for ur time. great work… as always

  18. i used to live at tamarama 20 years ago just saw your photo of kelly and it stoked me up i got out of sydney because it was tooo busy. tooo many drop ins, too many fights. now i surf in uncrowded waves, drive on beaches. park nad go surfin. no dramas. hope you guys keep on getting waves this winter old bondi is looking good joe

  19. i used to own a flat on campbell pde have seen it in your photos. wish i was back there, walk to the beach cycle everywhere else. i would put up with the crowds just to surf bondi when its big. cheers joe
