SURF, ART, MUSIC, FILM, FOOD, FASHION and SUSTAINABILITY: MAY 2010
Sizzle is the Bondi Beach Community Festival. It’s a new festival that’s about celebrating Bondi as a unique and amazing place to live. It’s about culture, creativity and bringing people together. At its heart it’s all about community.
Sizzle is being held between Thursday 6th May and Sunday 9th May and is the brainchild of local collaborations agency Rodriguez. Rodriguez is working with Waverley Council and a steering committee comprised of passionate locals whom are helping to curate Sizzle’s year-1 activities.
The Sizzle steering committee encompasses; Maurice Terzini (Icebergs / North Bondi Italian, founder), Steve Gorrow (Insight, global creative director), Sam McIntosh (Stab Magazine, co-founder and publisher), Murray Bell (Design Is Kinky / Semi Permanent, co-founder), Eugene Tan (Aquabumps.com and Aquabumps Gallery, founder), Brian Taranto (Love Police, founder), Lisa Smith (Bondi Style / Agent 25, publisher and founder), Ben Peacock (Republic of Everyone, co-founder), Jamal Ziane (Bedlam Group, founder), Dion Antony (local / artist), Andrew Valder (Rodriguez, founder) and festival director Darryl Nichols (Rodriguez).
“Sizzle is an idea that’s come from 10 years of living and loving Bondi. It’s a result of many conversations with friends and long-term passionate locals. It’s about having fun and celebrating all the people and things that make Bondi such a unique and inspiring place to live. It really is a grass roots affair this year but will hopefully grow to become a prominent fixture on the local cultural calendar. I really encourage locals to get involved and participate. All the information’s coming at the soon to be launched, sizzlefestival.com.au ” said Sizzle Festival Director Darryl Nichols of Rodriguez.
Sizzle is being brought to life through a series of activities that reflect existing Bondi culture, for example; garage sales, riding soft boards, art, music, surf, design and sustainability. The schedule of events includes;
Thursday 6-May
Pop-Up Cinema (film): two free film screenings that are being at the rear of the Aquabumps gallery and upstairs at the Beach Rd Hotel. Kickoff 7:30pm and films to be announced 15th April.
Friday 7-May
Garage Art Exhibition (art): Bondi’s biggest ever exhibition of new and emerging local artists held upstairs at the Beach Rd Hotel. Curated by Steve Gorrow and 100% of all sales proceeds go to the artists. Exhibition opens at 6:30pm.
Saturday 8-May
The Stab Soft On (surf): The Stab Soft On is a pirate-themed fancy dress foamie competition that’s all about originality, fun and the best of times. It’s a community-minded event that’s open to all ages and inspired by the less serious side of surfing. Featuring a guest cast of special Stab sliders and VIP judges the Soft On is truly a search for the softest slider. Entries are strictly limited. Register via sizzlefestival.com.au

The Mural Wall (street art): Steve Gorrow alongside fifteen heavy hitting artists each transform a section of the infamous Bondi Beach esplanade mural / graffiti wall live between 10am – 4pm.
Serious Sizzlers (music): an evening of premium quality live music performances from artists (TBC) who have connection with Bondi.

Sunday 9-May
Garage Sale Trail (recycling / sustainability): an effort to promote recycling and sustainability by celebrating Bondi’s love for the great Australian Garage Sale. Local residents are asked to register and host a garage sale on Sunday 9th May between 9am – 3pm. One week prior to the event a garage sale trail map is being produced that will provide a guide to the various garage sales being held throughout Bondi. Registration at sizzlefestival.com.au
The Mural Wall (street art): Steve Gorrow alongside fifteen heavy hitting artists each transform a section of the infamous Bondi Beach esplanade mural / graffiti wall live between 10am – 4pm.
In addition to the cultural activities a Sizzle Community Card is being produced to help connect local residents with local businesses through the Sizzle festival activities. The cards are free and available through participating local business outlets. Cardholders receive special benefits at participating outlets.
“There’s such a large group of people doing interesting things in Bondi; talented people making things happen in art, film, music, fashion and food. It makes sense to bring them all together and celebrate it,” says Eugene Tan of the iconic Aquabumps.com Bondi blog and Aquabumps Gallery.
Sizzle, Bondi Beach Community Festival is being presented by Rodriguez and supported by Waverley Council, the Beach Rd Hotel, Coopers Clear, El Nino and Bondi residents and local businesses.

He’s been living up there for 10 years…well, a mate of mine Paul Green shot a video of him on his last night up at the cliffs – only a couple of hours before the alleged incident.

(Still in draft format, he it is, forgive me for all the typos and bad english)

A lot of people ask me where to stay and what to do in Bali. I go there a lot…I reckon I’ve been there around 25 times (medal please). I’ve started to learn the language (which easier than you think).

There are many different types of holiday you can have in Bali. I guess that’s the beautiful of the magical island…you can go have a romantic getaway with your partner, surf and eat 5 star food whilst staying in a world class villa (cheaply)…or you can rough it in a hut on the beach for $5 a night and meet the flurry of global travellers now calling Bali a ‘must see’ on the backpacker trail alongside of Koh samui and Ibiza.

Bali is a 7 hr flight from Sydney. Flights fluctuate in price like the stock market…I’ve have had tickets as cheap as $700 and paid $1600 for my last trip (Easter 2009). I would say a decent price is around $1000AUD. You can get there on Garuda Airlines, Jetstar or Virgin Blue (via Brisbane).

If you’re not travelling at peak times (August, Easter, Xmas) it’s easy to find accommodation on the island – just rock up. It is ridiculous how many villas and hotels are now available. I suggest booking your 1st nights of accommodation, renting a motorbike and have a look around…see a nice joint, stop, hit them up for a decent rate and move in…(don’t forget to bargain with them).

You can stay in a hut (Warung) on the beach for $5AUD – that would be in the sticks though. I’m a little more high maintenance these days so I stay in Villas. Hotels can be the same price and smaller…villas usually have their own pools, gardens, butlers and all for a decent rate.

A Bali Holiday with not such a focus on Surfing
If you want to party, dine in beautiful restaurants but surf ‘OK’ beachies (with black sand) Seminyak/Legian area is your playground of choice. sooIt’s not too dissimilar to Ibiza or Mykonos. You will probably get home around sunrise and sleep most of the day…leaving your boards dry in their covers (trust me, every night, everyone is ready for a big night – I’m not kiddin’ – even in off season).

You’ll make new best friends overnight and ideal if travelling alone (or single). August is PEAK PEAK PEAK party time. Half of Europe migrates to Bali and rattles the place to pieces. Ku De Ta is the centre of peak season and everyone looks like they’ve just stepped out of a Giorgio Armani catalogue. Try the 18th August 2009 Bikini party 22nd August White Party on for size…you’ll be impressed and hungover to the beejesus.

When staying in the Seminyak area you either surf Changuu (the most consistent wave on the island and 15 mins away from ‘the Yak’) – which these days IS SO CROWDED (especially with resident pros like Shane Dorian, Taj and Jake Patto). Otherwise there’s probably a bank out the front of the famous Legian Hotel, or Ku De Ta, or even Gado Gado lane that will put Bondi to shame (Last time I was there out the front of the Anantara had a great wave on high tide). These waves need banks…most of the time they’re straighthanders. I find at low tide they close out badly. Go at mid going high tide. You can get a tide chart from anywhere on the island. The tides are a lot more dramatic than what we have here in Australia.

Place to stay in the Seminyak area:

The ultimate and my number 1 favourite is the Legian Hotel (don’t mistake this for the Legian Beach Hotel in Legian). It’s right on the beach, its run by GHM group and they know what they are doing. The service is INCREDIBLE and usually you can surf right out the front door. Ku De Ta and other bars are just around the corner…not to mention shopping. If I was going away with my lady and I wanted to surf a lot and keep her happy THIS IS THE PLACE. But luxury comes with a BIG price tag and if you’re not a merchant banker or a drug dealer, you might find it unaffordable. (Approximately $400-$500US a night per double room).

Next door to the Legian is The Samaya Villas which just as amazing as the Legian, with the same price tag. The restaurant at Samaya, Breeze, which is on the beach and one of my favourite places to dine in the world.

Sentosa is the latest and fanciest villa complexes up there now (even though their website is ugly), just around the corner from the Legian (But not on the beach). It’s beautiful. I’ve stayed here many times. It’s owned by a Sydney bloke and architecture is simply incredible. The restaurant Blossom is one of the best on the island and the SPA is out of this planet and probably one of the best. Send your lady here for sure. (tell her they only use Decleor products in the treatments – trust me, she’ll be impressed)

Ok, so you can’t afford either of the above… I don’t blame you…have no fear, there is plenty of other accommodation that is more moderately priced

Good for couples

Tony’s Villas – cheap and clean I hear around $38USD a night www.balitonys.com Never stayed here but good for a simple trip if you’re not planning on spending much time at your hotel.

Oberoi – right next to all the action (neighbouring Ku De Ta). Been around for ages. Heard very good things www.oberoibali.com around $300USD per night

The Dusun Bali around $240 USD per night. Looks good. Think I’ve walked thru there a couple times (but after a big night) www.the-dusun.com

Aston Bhavana Hotel – I stayed here last time I went, was Ok, simple, clean, own villa, next door to Sentosa (so you can use their spa) close to night life and good food…um, wasn’t stoked but its $220USD per night so I guess its right fit for that kinda money.

Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa – around $330UD – very new, right on the beach, had hot waves out the front this year, good if you’re with a lady cause you can surf 3 times a day and still go shopping and other girlie stuff. www.bali.anantara.com

Sofitel Seminyak Bali about $220USD per night. Yeah heard great things but never stayed…check it.

Villa Kembali www.kembalivillas.com

Good for groups:

If there is a group of you – get a villa – it works out so much better, and you’ll get staff, drivers, chefs, maids at most. This is what I do most of the time. But you’ll need 4-6 minimum at most. Some villas sleep 24-50!

Seminyak Beach House Villa – I found this great villa on the beach at Seminyak recently (Dec 2009), just up from La Luciola – awesome joint and big (slap bang on the beach) www.seminyakbeachhouse.com

The Villa Surya Damai, Hot hot hot. Like your own hotel. Think its owned by Aussie Real Estate genius Di Jones. Had a 40th birthday party there for a friend and loved it but you’re out in the sticks and need to drive everywhere (who cares, you’re surrounded by rice fields and we had 2 drivers!). Need decent sized group as its about $1000USD per night for the whole joint.

Dare’s place

Villa Azaya www.villaazaya.com – off the hook. I mean, about as modern and luxurious as it comes. Big, and very expensive though. Get a group booking (Five bedroom). Mega mega joint. You won’t regret staying here.

These Villas are so big (and Pricey), I reckon you’ll need to be very poplular or holding a wedding there:

People rave about this Villa on the Beach – Ombak Luwung – www.ombakluwung.com

Villa Arika – Never stayed here – but my mates that live in Bali reckon it’s hot – website

Villa Infinity – This place is LEGENDARY – it’s just been refurbed. Had a big drug bust years ago and was shut down after a massive party – but its back, and looking hot – WOW! – www.villainfinitybali.com

Villa Pantai Lima (translate to Beach 5) – the flagship beach front property…the mother of all mothers…the biggest group of villas on the planet that sleeps 50…you’ll need to be popular. It’s RIGHT near the right hander at Pernanan, Canguu – www.pantailima.com

I hear this joint ain’t bad either – www.villamaridadi.com

Out of the busy Areas

So, you’ve had enough of the nightlife of Bali and you want to chill. Get out! Go stay in Changgu or up at the Bukit e.g. Bingin, Uluwatu, Jimbaran.

Bingin
•	If I want to chill out in Bali I stay at Mick’s Place. There are no fancy restaurants or bars out at Bingin…just wake up early, do Yoga, then surf, sit around and read books and eat and surf again. Mick who owns/runs is one of the nicest guys on the island (Aussie). His huts are cheap (approx $90USD a night) and the best for simple accommodation. No air conditioning and simple toilets…suitable for low maintenance chicks…if you’re lady likes sipping Cosmos and Balenciaga h and bags I suggest maybe Mick’s latest villa, the honeymoon suite – or just somewhere else!
•	Jerome’s next door is also good
•	Dukes http://www.baliretreats.com.au/site/duke/
•	The Temple Lodge http://www.baliretreats.com.au/site/mario
•	The Hermitage http://www.baliretreats.com.au/site/thehermitage/
If you want to stay up at the Bukit in style, you need to stay at the mega Bulgari http://www.bulgarihotels.com/home.html?param_id_lingua=1 But I think its around $800USD per night.
Otherwise not far away and new is Karma Kandara which has the private beach (via cable car) that I talk about all the time. Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, just spend the day at the beach one day..its it a once in a lifetime experience. Yes, you have to pay to use the beach but you don’t get to go to a exoit beach via cable car every day and drink frozen margaritas until you fall asleep in a deck chair (there is no surfing here). Greenbowls ain’t far nor Nusa Dua.

Nusa Lembogan

The little Indonesian island paradise of Bali attracted 2.5 million visitors in 2009, source: Bali’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Australian’s make up 17.3 percent of these visitors. That’s a total of 432,500 Aussies running around mad on Bali every year, packing the bars in Bintang singlets. It felt like 400,000 were here for NYE – it was rammed. The amazing thing is that only 12.5 kilometres off the east coast of Bali lies the cruisy, uncommercialized, uncrowded island of Nusa Lembongan. Lembongan is 8 square kilometres in size with a permanent population of 5,000 (mainly fishermen + seaweed farmers). It’s true island style…no cars, and scooters are the only means of going out the back of the island to the pristine beaches. It’s pretty similar to Rottnest in WA except it’s offshore for most of the day (and you can charter a boat for half day for only $30).

There is only 1 place to stay on Lembongan – Batu Karang – www.batukaranglembongan.com
Exchange Rate: 1 Australian dollar = 8900 Rupiah (Dec 2009)

Now in its fifth year, the Bondi Single Fin competition has become not only the highlight of the Bondi surfing calendar with the retro surfing and boards on display, but it has also turned into an occasion when many old-time Bondi locals gather to celebrate the rich surfing history of the area affectionately known by many as “Scum Valley”. And this year’s competition on Saturday, November 7, was even more of a flashback, with an unofficial Bondi reunion taking place around the event, thus serving to swell the crowd of onlookers into several hundred smiling faces.

Under cloudy skies the event, organised by Ben Davies and Beau Sevastos under the auspices of the Bondi Boardriders club, kicked off at the ungodly hour of 7am with surfers no doubt still half-asleep being sent out in the first round of the Open section in 2 foot cross-shore wind surf. And thus began a day that would see some spectacular surfing, some even more spectacular dancing in the compulsory pre-surf dance competition and some seriously hilarious commentary from a team headed by Bondi’s funniest men Craig Markham and Cooper Silk.

Being a largely invitation-only event for the first time this year to ensure that a high calibre of surfing was present right through from the first round, by lunchtime the South Bondi Hill was crowded with an audience keeping a close eye on the action.

As the rounds progressed, the stand-out surfers quickly began to emerge. In the Open section, up and coming star Clancy Dawson, perennial challenger and two-time winner of the event Ian Wallace and long-time Bondi ripper Craig Robinson made their presence felt, while in the Masters division (for surfers with at least a 25-year plus history at Bondi), ever-popular nice guy Mikey Beame set the competition alight with surfing that had the crowd cheering loudly, as did the radical slashing of Bondi legend Dave Davidson.

With a very contestable small right hand wave offering enough enticing sections to allow surfers to show their stuff, there wasn’t a single heat throughout the day that wasn’t worth watching, with many of the single fin boards from the 70s and early 80s being used getting more of a workout than they’d had in years. With the water cleared of backpackers and other associated flotsam and jetsam, all competing surfers said they enjoyed the experience of surfing their home break with the crowd on the hill cheering them on.

Apart from the surfing, other highlights were the appearance of the legendary Margie Duprez in an inspired silver outfit, John Campbell doing a drive-by of Bondi in his tug boat after being unexpectedly called in to work and not being able to surf in the comp, members of legendary hip-hop act the Wu-Tang Clan joining the band To The Next on the hill stage for a couple of tunes and some brilliant dancing from the grommets on stage in between heats.

In the end, the finals of both the Opens and Masters were enthralling affairs. In the Open division, natural-footer Clancy Dawson, demonstrating the style that has him pushing towards the pro tour, carved up the small waves with a majestic style which was a pleasure to watch. But goofy-foot duo Ian Wallace and Craig Robbo never let him get too far ahead, nor did Bronte pair John Dwyer and Luke Daniels, the latter possessing a very pleasing-to-the-eye flowing style. In the wash-up however it was Dawson who took the first prize, followed by Wallace and Robinson in second and third.

Mikey Beame was heavily favoured to take out the Masters division but first he had to get past solid local goofyfooters Steve Aldo and Davidson, Bronte’s Wayne Allchin, natural foot stylemaster Nick Pearson and Bondi’s Adam Gibson, aka yours truly.

When the results were announced at the raucous presso at the Beach Road Hotel, it was confirmed that Beame had taken the first prize from Pearson in second and Davidson in third place. Mikey’s acceptance speech was full of emotion, the popular winner dedicating his win to the memory of his brother’s wife who had recently passed away from cancer.

With the formalities out of the way, it was time for Bondi band the Shark Alarms to take the stage and for the night to descend in a beautiful type of mayhem, ensuring many sore heads were to be nursed the next day along with some beautiful memories of catching up with old and new friends.

The colours of this place are insane. Clearest blue water in the world I’d say. Sometimes I’d be shooting something (like the boat shot) and even I can’t believe the fluoro hues that are flash up on my camera back.

Not many surfing shots today – even though it’s been 3 foot for the first couple of days – I’m having a break from chasing board riders and actually gettin’ a few for myself.

Later, uge

Last night before bed I checked the swell charts. I saw a 15 second period forecasted overnight that reverts to 10 seconds in the morning. To be honest, I thought it was a typo or the work experience kids had been let loose in the Buoy weather office yesterday – so I ignored it. If you don’t know what all this seconds and period jargon is ( I don’t really ) – basically forecast was for a short spike in swell overnight.

Anyway, the work experience kids hacked it right. As I pulled up into the car park at sunrise I saw a surfer pull into a (no exaggeration) decent tube all the way across the shallow bank. Wow. It was around 3 foot with 4 foot mackin’ sets, clean and crowded early. Swimming out there was a little more complicated due to a massive rip which kept me busy for hours. Even though there were plenty of surfers out there, and some decent rides amongst close outs, I just couldn’t stay in position. Instead here is a fresh serve of some lip throwin’ dumpers to keep you aquatically inspired.

Zee Quiksilver shop is now open at 383 George Street Sydney for all those trapped in the cubicles. Drop in at lunch time, might be time to grab some new boardies seeing we’ve got beach weather.

Later chinas ::uge

Little bit more bump in the swell today. Say a small man’s foot up on yesterday. The swell charts are calling it a 13 second swell period – wow – it’s probably from all that thumpin’ swell down in Victoria. That all translates to 2 footers, long waits, lacking push and big early morning crowds enjoying the incredible weather – again. Seeing it’s been flat it is actually looking quite inviting.
Sydney, August, 2009: A new exhibition at Aquabumps Gallery captures the iconic Bondi Beach like never before – from 500 ft in the air. The exhibition, which opens on 12 August, is the first since Aquabumps moved into its new gallery space.

The vivid aerial shots were taken by renowned photographer Eugene Tan in March, with their remarkable light and colour proving that his skills extend far beyond surf photography. Evoking Fred Williams’ landscapes with their splashes of unexpected colour, the photographs mark a departure from Tan’s terrestrial and aquatic shots.

“I hadn’t come across any aerial shots of Bondi worth talking about, and wanted to apply the Aquabumps style in a new way, from a different angle. Three very expensive helicopter flights later, I feel I had it captured,” said Tan.

On the long, hot days that Tan was up in the chopper, an estimated 20,000 people descended upon the sand and sea to cool off. “To see the crowded expanse of Bondi Beach from a charter helicopter is an incredible experience. The water takes on a new allure, and the bright towels and umbrellas make a riot of colour upon the sand,” said Tan.

The Airborne Exhibition will hold special appeal for many Aquabumps fans. Tan emailed his mailing list – all 29,000 of them – the day before each shoot to encourage them to be on the beach while he took photographs from above.

“Some people brought lurid towels and umbrellas, or placed themselves in ridiculous poses, so they would be able to identify themselves later. Now, it’s like playing ‘Where’s Wally’ – people spend ages trying to find themselves in each shot,” said Tan.

Already, the aerial photographs have broad appeal, with overseas buyers.

The exhibition will hang on the gallery’s minimalist east wall, whose smooth white walls are designed to showcase photographs framed in Aquabumps’ trademark style – the slick acrylic face-mounted method that mimics the slippery sheen of water.

The west wall will continue to feature the latest photographs taken by Tan on his morning pilgrimages to the beach.

The exhibition will hang in the gallery for three weeks and opens August 12 2009. Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Australia telephone 02 9130 7788

This whole week we have a ENE swell. ENE swell direction doesn’t favour Bondi, so you will have to drive to other beaches like Maroubra, Manly, Wedge, Narra etc. Even though waves are 3-4 foot today, I saw nothing really worthy of surfing this morning (drove from Bondi to Maroubra).

The Bra was pretty much deserted, 2 guys out. Bondi had some 1-2 foot dribblers, Tama was full as a boot and burger heaven…so the early morning high tide (7:30am) was really affecting the quality. Perhaps as the day progresses, the tide lowers it may improve. Seems to be quite a unsettled windswell…

BondiFit – City to Surf Training Group

Spot Anderson, (the nut that you see training people down at Bondi in the middle of winter with no wettie on) has started a City to Surf training group. City to Surf is on August 9, remember when the riot police rolled up at our little post run drinks? (see pics) and thirsty athletes guzzled half a palette of Coopers? Well its coming up again…and it’s time to start losing the winter flab. Enrol

Here are some images from my recent Mentawai trip to keep you going in between sets :: yooj

If are lucky enough not to be working today I’d be heading to a exposed beach with banks or a bit of reef whilst its offshore and sunny. Either south or north.

Bondi Surf Company, at 72-76 Campbell Parade Bondi, are having a renovation sale – 20% off wetsuits and up to 50% off clothing. (get some warm duds!)

Tomorrow it will be smaller but more organised…how cold is it?? Let’s head back to the tropics ::uge

Yep – we’re still up here in Indonesia cruising around the group of islands off Sumatra called the Mentawais. We’ve been on the boat for 8 days now, and only set foot on land once. Today’s surf break is a long righthander that grinds down the side of a picturesque tropical island – probably one of the most beautiful islands up here – think I’ll retire on it. There is no village – just jam packed with coconut trees. You can ride some of these waves for 250 metres!

Cloudbreak

If you want to surf one of the best lefthanders in the world – CLOUDBREAK, Surfection Mosman has booked out Tavarua for a week (30th May to 6th June), and they’re looking for surfers. Land package for 1 week is $4000AUD + airfares. Contact Julian at Surfection Mosman directly (not me) if you’re keen. julian@surfectionmosman.com
Back soon ::uge

The swell came back today up here in the Mentawai Islands. (Thankfully). The 25 boats in the area travelled overnight to their favourite breaks spread out in the archipelago. We arrived at dawn to a 3 foot mechanical left which is so perfect, it’s as if it was engineered specifically for practising your backhand whacks. (Not to mention a cheeky tube upon take off).

This break named after the tubular shape of pasta has featured in so many surfing DVDs – yet it’s really in the middle of nowhere. Not a building in sight or a person on land. Just a big neighbouring swamp with a few crocs.

Have a good day :: uge

Ideal conditions for Bondi this morning – and everyone is onto it. Big hungry crew frothing over 3 footers in the southern corner. Gentle side/offshore winds (SSW)…sun is shining…water is reasonably warm and everyone is due to head into the office soon. A good time to paddle out…

This swell will progressively get smaller into the weekend. Today and tomorrow are probably the best days of this week. Don’t think there will be much left over for the Easter Break. (and the weather looks mild average 21 degrees)

New format

I think we got a bit carried away when designing the new daily email layout. We had complaints of it being far too slow to download or arriving as jumbled code. Today we’re testing a new simplified template which should rectify most of these troubles. (fingers crossed) report weirdness

Gallery Closed over Easter

We’re closing the gallery doors for the Easter break. Friday to Monday. Don’t close often…no one in town anyway.

Balibelly

I am jumping on a plane to Bali to avoid the cooler temperatures here. Will send a few updates from up there. Jumpa lagi benchongs :: uge

This low continues to provide rain, wind and swell. At least its toned down a little from yesterday, the wettest day of the year so far. Look on the bright side, at least all the salt has been washed off your car.

Bondi was a random 4-6 foot this morning. Not much lining up at all. More towards the north there is a few peaks, but you’d really want to be keen. (we have plenty of keen people around Bondi)

Tomorrow looks like the winds will go offshore and the swell remains making for a much better surf day. In fact the next 4 days look sweet for surfers. Nothing like what has been going on up at the Goldie…WOW…

Searching for Michael Peterson

Jolyon Hoff’s new feature film is out on MP. Three years in the making, Searching for Michael Peterson is a docudrama that tells the story of one of Australia’s greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness. There is a screening this weekend Friday 3rd April @ Bondi Bowls Club from 7pm to 9:30pm.

Peter Versus Toby

Some new crew have moved into a gallery/boutique space on my gallery street in Bondi. I’ve been curiously observing some crazy paint work going down on the shopfront – 1st a pyramid…then mixed in with an outta space theme and now Tahitian mountains? One word comes to mind…Acid. Their opening party is this Friday. Shop 1/110 Curlewis St antoine@peteversustoby.com | website

There still isn’t a great deal going on with the surf. Bondi was really calm and flat this morning with a beautiful sunrise (again). A fat 31 degrees forecasted so it’s another great opportunity to hit the beach and go for a swim – even though the water has dropped to a frosty 18 degrees. Later tonight a south change will hit – blowing winds of up to 25 knots – that should change things for tomorrow. Enjoy.

2 Fists 1 Heart

It’s always amazing to see how many people are up before sunrise exercising down the beach. Boxing seems to be taking off – even with the ladies. Little Rocky and Rockettes everywhere banging the pads. There is a new movie out “2 Fists 1 Heart” which is showing at the cinemas. It’s a contemporary Australian drama centring around boxing written by Rai Fazio – a champion boxer himself. It’s also produced by well known local, David Elfick, (of the Newsfront, Rabbit Proof Fence, Blackrock, Morning of the Earth fame). So go see…also look at Rai’s blog Howtothrowapunch.com for your morning sparring session. (feel free to practice on Wal)
