FULL TIME POSITION

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 5 days a week, 10am to 6pm (with slightly longer hrs in Summer)

$ – to suit applicant

Aquabumps is a unique salt crusted business at the forefront of the online photography scene. Aquabumps has been in operation for over 12 years and has 40,000 people frothin’ daily over the images published on the website and Facebook. Aquabumps has carved its self a bright future in its own niche of beach imagery with a high demand for the fine art prints sold in its permanent gallery – Bondi.

The Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi is looking for a talented, smart, energetic, ultra-organised, beach obsessed, and photographically aware person to work in the gallery full time. This role is in the gallery…I repeat…in the gallery and not a photographer’s assistant role, so you won’t be holding a camera, hanging down the beach all day working on your tan (that job has been taken you thank you). Phew, glad we got that out the way…now down to business.

The Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi is big and busy, requiring plenty of involvement from our staff to run smoothly. Thousands of people come to the gallery from all over to view the artworks…and hopefully purchase them. The weekends are exceptionally busy, whilst mid week is a great time to get the gallery organised and work on other facets of the business which involve organising events, managing website advertising, updating content on the website and dealing with overseas online orders.

The successful applicant needs to be able to sell and have great rapport with our clients – it’s not hard, the people that walk in the door are always good people. You will need at least 2 years sales experience on your CV (that’s a must). If you’re shy and timid this role is not for you and best apply for that library job. If you’re full of flavour, and can go up to anyone and start a conversation – read on.

Customers need to be informed of all the size options, framing options and if required, freighting costs. You’ll have to intimately know all 100,000 Aquabumps images (slight exaggeration), as everyone has special requests…and you’ll need to make plenty of recommendations, our customers are spoilt for choice and have difficulty choosing sometimes.

Now that’s just the beginning, we also sell artwork online and orders need to be processed, organised, packed and production needs to be watched over with an Eagle eye – as everything has to be perfect. I mean world class perfect. You will need to be organised – pedantically organised…(so if you neatly fold your bath towel and always on time for appointments you’re looking good.) Deliveries have to be on time, and in the correct format.

OK, enough ramble, here’s a summary of requirements:

Australian resident (sorry no travellers)

2 years sales experience and a outgoing personality

Ridiculously organised and proactive

Handy on the computer, Excel, Word, Outlook would be great but not essential

Good communicator

Beach loving (it’s compulsory to swim at Bondi during your lunch break)

Please send resume along with a cover note to Debbie Tan … but only after you’ve spent some time online browsing Aquabumps.com first! If you’d like to send a video CV via YOUTUBE – that’s fine.

SEND YOUR CV to:

So a little over a year or so ago we met up with Speedo to talk about a boardie/swimsuit range – yes, a collaboration of efforts (sorry to use that collab word – everyone seems to be using it). New printing techniques now allow the reproduction of high resolution images onto fabrics and lycra…so it made sense to join up with Speedo, a Bondi born company that now sells in 126 countries and put out a range

Here is a small piece Network 10 ran on Wednesday 24th August after the Mercedes Fashion festival in Sydney:

Miss Universe Australia, Rachel Finch has also joined up with Speedo to become the face of the new range:

This is the full image that has been wrapped into the bikini.

There are both women’s and men’s ranges…even some kids stuff. The boardies are made from a super stretch material, so they don’t get caught on your knees when getting up on your board (basically they’re super comfortable)

So where to get them? Well you can do it two ways

Call 1800 023 807 and ask Speedo where the local stockist is…or

Use the store locator on Speedo’s website

See the shoot:

You guys gotta see this…it’s called the Wave Garden. They’ve been teasing us with mini clips but launched yesterday (15 Feb). Basically a whole bunch of smart people have worked out to make waves in lakes, lagoon or just anybody of water. Took them 8 years to work out. Yes, like a wave pool – just much simpler, more efficient and less infrastructure. Ok, so it’s only a small wave, but hopefully the six to 8 foot pipe version is coming soon.

FAQs

1. Is the wave suitable for anyone?

Yes, it is. From beginners to professional surfers.
2. How big can a Wavegarden wave be?

It can technically be any size, although a maximum height of 1.6 metres is recommended.
3. Are all Wavegarden waves the same?

No, they aren’t. A single facility can generate different types of wave sections with different sizes, according to your requirements.
4. How deep is the water in a Wavegarden wave?

Similar to the natural waves generated in the ocean.
5. Can I use the same surfboard that I use when I am surfing at the beach?

Of course you can.
6. What is the difference between Wavegarden and a standing wave?

Wavegarden is a moving wave, just like ocean waves. You can ride the wave in exactly the same way as if you were surfing in the ocean.
7. How long can a Wavegarden wave break?

The maximum distance of a Wavegarden wave is only limited by the size of your available space. We can create waves up to 3km in length so far!
8. Only the first part of the wave could be used in the wave facilities built so far. Is that the same with Wavegarden?

No. Wavegarden has developed a unique technology that generates perfect waves with tubes throughout the entire length of their breaks.
9. Can the Wavegarden only generate linear waves?

No, we can create any type of wave: circular waves that are “endless” and open/linear waves with a beginning and end. All Wavegardens are built according to the type of wave that is best suited for each space.

Sydney, March 2011 – Join world-class surfers Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, Owen Wright, Julian Wilson and Oscar Wright as they bust out their best moves at the Boost Mobile SurfSho presented
by BlackBerry at Bondi Beach from 11th to 13th March 2011.

Last year’s Boost Mobile SurfSho was the first international surfing event to take place on Bondi Beach in over 20 years. Thousands of spectators are expected to return in 2011 to watch Owen
Wright defend his coveted back to back titles along with a host of exciting aerial surfers from across the globe competing on the world’s most iconic beach in this free, fun-filled, three-day
surfing event.

The Boost Mobile SurfSho will also feature a free entertainment program alongside the spectacular surfing action including a celebrity surfing competition, athlete signing sessions, afternoon beach
concerts and loads of other beach activities for spectators of all ages.

Last years Boost Mobile SurfSho champion Owen Wright said, “Last years SurfSho was a lot of fun and it was great to beat world number one – Kelly Slater. I like Bondi a lot, and if we are lucky to
have awesome waves again, there is going to be some stiff competition!”

The Boost Mobile SurfSho is also the first-ever surfing event at Bondi to be sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals and is expected to attract more than 40,000 spectators
including 13,500 from inter-state and overseas.

Event spokesperson and former pro-surfer John Shimooka said the Boost Mobile SurfSho was a great success in 2010 and will be a unique, fun-filled event that appeals to people of all ages.
“Bondi is one of the worlds most iconic beaches, coupled with famous big-air specialists like Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith and Owen Wright showing off their best tricks, and free music and entertainment all weekend, we anticipate a standing room only event for the second year running!” said Shimooka.

The Boost Mobile SurfSho will run from 8am to 5pm each day, kicking off with the Junior Surf Sho on Friday 11 March. Saturday will see the world’s best compete in the SurfSho Open and main SurfSho events, a celebrity surfing competition to raise money for charity and a jet ski tow-in
expression session.

Sunday’s SurfSho competition follows a unique format, designed to make it easy to follow from the beach, even for non-surfers. A wheel is spun at the start of each heat, determining which tricks the
surfers must perform. B, O, O, S, T letters are awarded to each successful manoeuvre and the six highest scored surfers who spell BOOST go into the final.
I wish I had a buck for every person that has said to me they’d love to be in one of our aerial shots so they can blow it up large and hang it on their wall at home. Well here is your chance. On Australia Day we’re flying in a helicopter shooting pics of Sydney’s beaches. (Just like we do every year)

When: Australia Day 26th Jan 2011 between 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Where: Well, that’s the hard part, see on Australia day you have planes and choppers flying all over the place. So we can’t confirm our course until we’re in the air. But my first preference is to shoot Neilsen Park then Bondi then Tama then Bronte and ok, we might even make it down to Coogee and Cloey. If we can’t go south, we’ll hit the northern beaches like last year – Shelly, Manly, Freshie and Curly.

Suggestions: Take down an umbrella or colourful towel…just something that stands out so you can find yourself later.

Here are some images from last year’s flight…I love em and they look fantastic blown up. Come down! It’s going to be 33 degrees.

The question I get asked all the time is what gear I use. So I hope this page answers all your questions. We are living in an amazing time and have access to affordable and sophisticated camera gear. Basically we’re spoilt for choice at the moment.

I am lucky enough to use many cameras these days but nearly everything is shot using Canon equipment – which is the biggest name in photography gear right now. My main workhorse is the latest EOS Canon 1d Mark 4 16 Megapixels. I also use Canon 5D MkII’s a lot – they’re great.

So what’s in my bag(s) that I lug around:

Jaws, MAUI (January 20, 2011)—This morning at 2:00am local Hawaii time, professional big wave surfer Mark Visser made history by achieving a night ride on waves measuring 30-40 foot faces off the shores of Maui with specially engineered LED lights built into a buoyancy vest and modified into the surfboard. The lighting technologies were created especially for the project by Solus Corporation using ground breaking NASA submarine lighting to ensure the wave and board were lit in the right places, at the right time and illuminated the wave without hindering the vision of Visser, the jet ski drivers and the helicopter pilots.

A true world first – no one has attempted to ride and capture big waves at Jaws, Maui before in total darkness quite like this. With the help of his team overhead in a helicopter, Visser was towed in by jet-ski as he entered the infamous big wave break just prior to the peak of the swell, completely illuminated.

I don’t know who owns these photos but they are amazing (let me know if they’re yours). I fell off my chair when this chain email came by. The talk of Perth at the moment is the sharks…they seem to be everywhere. Last weekend they had to close Cott Beach as a big mack daddy pointer strolled on by…I heard even the surfers down at Margies are staying out the water. What is going on over there? These photos below are from Transit, a sand bar off Thompson Bay Rottnest island. As a kid I used to paddle out there on my foamie and catch a few waves…

Let's to Phil Kiem's account of what happened when the Tsunami hit the Mentawai Islands Oct 2010

MV Tengirri

Below is written by Phil Kiem, owner of Tengirri and has been in the islands for 6 years:

Tengirri was anchored in the night anchorage near the surf break Lances Left the night the Tsunami hit. We had planned to go to Greenbush that night but due to a late afternoon west change we decided to stay in the Lances area for another day. Before I went to bed I thought that it was unusually rough in what is normally a calm anchorage. The weather was rough outside so didn’t think anything of it. I found out later this was about an hour before the tsunami hit, went to bed. An hour later the anchor alarm is going off and the boat is spinning around on anchor, we were not dragging and it was stormy outside so didn’t think anything of it.

Wake up the next morning check Bintangs on daylight , still didn’t know the Tsunami had hit. Find out later the village behind the Bintangs break is now reported to have been hit hard.

We went around the corner to Hts , one of the canoe salesmen told me there had been a earthquake the night before, still didn’t mention anything about a tsunami at Maccas. I rang Anthony to see how bad it was, he filled me in on what had happened but exact details were still scratchy. Go for a quick surf and some photos of the boys come back 2 hours later there was 3 missed calls from Martin Daly on the phone. He had contacted us to help co ordinate to go and get the 20 guests who were staying at Maccas surf camp who had now been up in the village since the morning it happened. Took off at full speed after lunch arriving at the anchorage behind Maccas bay you can see the affects of the tsunami instantly all the trees stripped on the KFC point.

Found our way through the mangroves to where the Maccas surf camp used to be. All the bungalows had been absolutely wiped out, with only the top 2 stories of the restaurant still standing. The were 2 locals there collecting the remains of the resort. I asked one of them to take us to the village where the tourists were. The 2 locals story of the tsunami was that the earthquake that caused it wasn’t that strong , he said it was a long one but no where near as strong as last years Padang quake. No more then 10 minuets later they heard a roaring sound coming from the sea. By this stage everyone had run to the top level of the restaurant to see a 10ft wall of white water marching towards them, the first wave which was the biggest took out the bungalows in one go and also the bottom floor, the next 2 waves not as big. He also said it looked like the wave came from both sides and met in the middle where the camp was.

We made it to the village ( the village behind Maccas was unaffected because it is further up the river )to find 15 tourists all safe and sound maybe a little in shock. 5 of them had already set off for the port of Sikakap that morning. Got them back to the boat and drove them into Sikakap where they stayed the night then into Padang on the ferry. These people have the real story to tell !

The next day we drive back to Maccas, at this stage we still didn’t know the extent of the damage further south, driving along the coast you can see that it has changed the landscape what was once thick jungle all the way to the beach has now all been washed inland a couple of hundred meters. The ocean is full of debris and is an unusual color. We surf 3ft Maccas that day. The day after that we go South to Thunders and see that the island has been smashed also, most of the locals have already fled to Sikakap. As we get close to Thunders we see aid being dropped in by airplane to hard to access villages on the mainland followed by 5 people parachuting in after there goods.

We were asked by Surf Aid to go in and check 3 villages further south of Thunders. They all report to be ok, no deaths but have lost there houses and are in need of food and shelter. They say that a village further south again there have been over 400 people killed. They said the tsunami came inland over 300 meters but they had easy access to higher ground so when they felt the quake they all ran for it – smart move!

By now Surf Aid are already out here assessing the damage as well as other aid companies starting to trickle in. This is when we start hearing reports of the actual damage and the amount of deaths it has cause. The Maccas, Greenbush, Thunders and further south are the worst hit.

When we left the Sikakap area a few days ago there were already 3 surf charters boats getting aid in and a big Indo navy boat had just arrived from Jakarta. Now more surf charter boats have been sent into the area.

If people ask where to donate, I would reccomend either Surf Aid or the West Sumatran Boat Association. These 2 organizations are working together and using the surf charter boats who have finished chartering for the year to get the help out to the islands. The only way to get stuff to the Mentawai Islands is by boat. Surf Aid and the operators of these boats know the area better then anyone as we are here all year round. Surf Aid and the charter boats were first to respond as soon as it happened. By donating to these organizations you will directly help the people of the Mentawai Islands.

Thanks on wind report chris, very strong gust before, we just dropped anchor in safe place near sikakap. We picked up about 18 people from a wooden canoe who were in a bit of strife, they from Betuwonga, south end of Maccas bay, they said no deaths, but damage, silabu was pretty protected, no deaths or damage.

The south facing coasts along the bottom of north pagai really copped it.

Greenbush bay village was really in need of a hand, they are just stunned still, and although their wells are contaminated and there are flies and stink coming off the bloated corpes they wanted to stay in their village until missing people turn up. I guess to bury their dead too.

We did what we could there and I’ve asked Bd to head there, but they are being run by red cross and must follow that course of action. There were 52 houses and a church and even 200 metres back it’s hard to see much of the old houses, roofs etc, it’s wiped clean. Their closest hill is a long way away and from what I could see it would be hard going to climb thru the foliage to get there. They said 142 dead, 50 missing and there were about 25 people we gave water, juice, biscuits and muesli bars and some clothes to. Next village along is hard to see, its east of greenbush bay and down the bottom of a bay with a river running out. Its harder access to get into, no real sand beach unless you go way up the river.

This village is called mutu baru baru or something like that.

They had a hill nearby with uncontaminated water, but all buildings again completely wiped away. They said of their 307 population 180 are dead, the military had taken most bodies away, but more rot and no real toilet system. We gave what we could, but spirits higher in this village with kids smiling. One small girl had an infected arm with possible fracture. The military had taken people in need of care to sikakap, which is where most people are heading who have nothing left or injuries. With this weather setting in, it’s a good idea.

Have been stressing the importance of shitting on beach and not in village, boiling water, burying dead, cleaning cuts etc.

Sounds like the west coast of south pagai and especially south facing bays there are also badly smashed.

Reports vary depending on places, Maccas 3 waves, mutu 2, greenbush was so heavy it was hard to push for info.
Sounded like the quake went for about a minute, but some say much less and a couple said 8 minutes. Some said they couldn’t stand, some said it was too dark to see how many wAves, some say 7,8,9 and 10 metres. I estimate about 4, and found a blanket that high and marks on trees.

Don’t think the place has lifted, it’s looks so sometimes, but it’s more just stripped bare making it look risen.
Flotsam in water is less, but there’s still much danger there.
Rusty nails and broken glass around villages and wood hitting your legs unloading gear from speedboat are also thongs that have happened to us, plus a bent prop trying to get in.

Obviously water, and shelter are first needed and some cups to share the water gallons. Water filters would be great, shovels, pretty much everything is gone in the worst villages, including a lot of their coconut trees, ie income and what’s left has been their water up to now.
Our guests being awesome.

Chris scuzz Scurrah

Report from John Mcgroder, Barrenjoey

Barrenjoey anchored at Lances left. I went into Goibik (Bintang village) to take photos. Hopefully the Aid will see that this place has been flattened. There is nothing left. People were sitting on crumpled concrete slabs with their heads in their hands. People from Katiet (Lances Rights) were coming and there were tears, hugs, and wailing. They had lost kids, wives, fathers. The destruction was complete. Barrenjoey has already donated rice and supplies from Surfaid. Can we do more?

Felt guilty surfing. Rounded up the passengers and asked if they would like to help. They were all for it. So we went into the beach at Bintang and helped them lift huge timber bearers out of the jungle that used to be the bridge. We manhandled the beams into place. Then laid the timbers and Mr Long went at it with the chainsaw. They had their bridge. Anything else?

One more bridge, no problem. This one, we had to carry the bearers a lot further. Anyway, the locals were stoked. We helped them replace 2 bridges in 2 hours. All villages need tools. Everything has been washed away and is beneath rubble. The 2 tsunamis washed about 200-300m inland and took everything in their path. Any boats heading out need to take basic tools (hammers, large nails, saws). Tarpaulins, rope, blankets, drinking water, food. Medical supplies. From what I can see, the Bintang coast looks like it has plenty of food. although the stockpile i saw has to be distributed around 4 villages. They need to begin re-building. there are police and navy guys from Tua Pejat helping. everyone is scared of another tsunami.

Barrenjoey is now in the Thunders/Sikakp area. We are in communication with Tom Plummer (Surfaid) who is on Huey. Our passengers are helping where they
can with basic manpower. We have the speedboat at anyone in need’s disposal. Tom mentioned the Australian Government was donating money for some large cargo boats to take aid out to the Sikakap area. We will be using the Bynda to help distribute to the areas in need. I am in contact via Belinda/handphone and our Satphone is on.

Please donate to SURFAID now

SURF, ART, MUSIC, FILM, FOOD, FASHION and SUSTAINABILITY: MAY 2010
Sizzle is the Bondi Beach Community Festival. It’s a new festival that’s about celebrating Bondi as a unique and amazing place to live. It’s about culture, creativity and bringing people together. At its heart it’s all about community.
Sizzle is being held between Thursday 6th May and Sunday 9th May and is the brainchild of local collaborations agency Rodriguez. Rodriguez is working with Waverley Council and a steering committee comprised of passionate locals whom are helping to curate Sizzle’s year-1 activities.
The Sizzle steering committee encompasses; Maurice Terzini (Icebergs / North Bondi Italian, founder), Steve Gorrow (Insight, global creative director), Sam McIntosh (Stab Magazine, co-founder and publisher), Murray Bell (Design Is Kinky / Semi Permanent, co-founder), Eugene Tan (Aquabumps.com and Aquabumps Gallery, founder), Brian Taranto (Love Police, founder), Lisa Smith (Bondi Style / Agent 25, publisher and founder), Ben Peacock (Republic of Everyone, co-founder), Jamal Ziane (Bedlam Group, founder), Dion Antony (local / artist), Andrew Valder (Rodriguez, founder) and festival director Darryl Nichols (Rodriguez).
“Sizzle is an idea that’s come from 10 years of living and loving Bondi. It’s a result of many conversations with friends and long-term passionate locals. It’s about having fun and celebrating all the people and things that make Bondi such a unique and inspiring place to live. It really is a grass roots affair this year but will hopefully grow to become a prominent fixture on the local cultural calendar. I really encourage locals to get involved and participate. All the information’s coming at the soon to be launched, sizzlefestival.com.au ” said Sizzle Festival Director Darryl Nichols of Rodriguez.
Sizzle is being brought to life through a series of activities that reflect existing Bondi culture, for example; garage sales, riding soft boards, art, music, surf, design and sustainability. The schedule of events includes;
Thursday 6-May
Pop-Up Cinema (film): two free film screenings that are being at the rear of the Aquabumps gallery and upstairs at the Beach Rd Hotel. Kickoff 7:30pm and films to be announced 15th April.
Friday 7-May
Garage Art Exhibition (art): Bondi’s biggest ever exhibition of new and emerging local artists held upstairs at the Beach Rd Hotel. Curated by Steve Gorrow and 100% of all sales proceeds go to the artists. Exhibition opens at 6:30pm.
Saturday 8-May
The Stab Soft On (surf): The Stab Soft On is a pirate-themed fancy dress foamie competition that’s all about originality, fun and the best of times. It’s a community-minded event that’s open to all ages and inspired by the less serious side of surfing. Featuring a guest cast of special Stab sliders and VIP judges the Soft On is truly a search for the softest slider. Entries are strictly limited. Register via sizzlefestival.com.au

The Mural Wall (street art): Steve Gorrow alongside fifteen heavy hitting artists each transform a section of the infamous Bondi Beach esplanade mural / graffiti wall live between 10am – 4pm.
Serious Sizzlers (music): an evening of premium quality live music performances from artists (TBC) who have connection with Bondi.

Sunday 9-May
Garage Sale Trail (recycling / sustainability): an effort to promote recycling and sustainability by celebrating Bondi’s love for the great Australian Garage Sale. Local residents are asked to register and host a garage sale on Sunday 9th May between 9am – 3pm. One week prior to the event a garage sale trail map is being produced that will provide a guide to the various garage sales being held throughout Bondi. Registration at sizzlefestival.com.au
The Mural Wall (street art): Steve Gorrow alongside fifteen heavy hitting artists each transform a section of the infamous Bondi Beach esplanade mural / graffiti wall live between 10am – 4pm.
In addition to the cultural activities a Sizzle Community Card is being produced to help connect local residents with local businesses through the Sizzle festival activities. The cards are free and available through participating local business outlets. Cardholders receive special benefits at participating outlets.
“There’s such a large group of people doing interesting things in Bondi; talented people making things happen in art, film, music, fashion and food. It makes sense to bring them all together and celebrate it,” says Eugene Tan of the iconic Aquabumps.com Bondi blog and Aquabumps Gallery.
Sizzle, Bondi Beach Community Festival is being presented by Rodriguez and supported by Waverley Council, the Beach Rd Hotel, Coopers Clear, El Nino and Bondi residents and local businesses.
