Earthquake Island
This morning we motored south to an area that I did not know existed in the island chain. We came across a small island, the size of the Sydney Cricket Grounds…pristine calm beach on one side, crankin’ 4-5 foot barrelling left off the other (and a little hut in the middle). Mystery island…population 3. Not another boat in sight. Doesn’t get much better than this….

The Mentawai Islands sit on volatile dirt. September 13th, 2007 a massive earthquake rocked this area. It measured 8.4 on the Richter scale. Apparently we’re close to the epicentre and you can see the effects on the local islands – reefs have changed, breaks aren’t the same…and some islands are raised up 1 metre above sea level…like our island today…
Adios, ugios
