Replica morning to yesterday. Micro waves, hot, plenty of activity on the beach and a little bit of fog as the hot air mixes will the cool.
The wave situation is quite dire….1 foot dribbly bits. The swell radar shows little relief for the next 7 days. Head to Hawaii, Victoria or Margies where they’re enjoying swell. Nothing to see here peeps, just cheap photoshop tricks in an attempt to spice up today’s waveless frames. (yes those weird colours are on purpose so no need to email with concerns of my broken camera gear).
The (new) Aquabumps gallery which now resides behind the Bondi hotel in Curlewis Street (151) is open for your viewing pleasure all weekend 10am to 6pm. The new gallery is huge and hangs hundreds of images from these daily emails. All images are for sale and we send them all over the world regularly. It’s going to be mega beach weather all weekend, so come to the beach, swim then drop by the gallery as we’re just across the road (in the middle of the beach)

Have a great weekend ::eugenius
We’re in the middle of a small swell drought. There are waves…really small ones – you’d have to be very keen as the power throttle is way down to a 5.5 second period. That won’t push much, well anyone over 40 kay-gees would struggle. Most of my mates are double that. Some even triple (Damo)
Swell direction is ENE so places like Manly, The Bra, Whaley would be attracted the most energy. Bondi still had a mini-wave on a shallow bank in the corner (Geurs Shorey). Say 1 to 2 footish. Tomorrow will be a replica of today. Saturday a bit of NE wind swell may pump out the odd 3 footer. Other than that…the 7 day radar shows little relief. That nervous twitch may come back, you be a little kranky and spend more time hanging around the house annoying your partner.
Here are some suggested distractions (and you can still look like you’re doing work on your computer)
My mate Damo writes a hell of a blog on old skool board design. Check out where he spends all his time. www.boardcollector.com
1,200 girls in bikinis : the largest swimsuit shoot on Bondi beach Sept 2007 view images
Google Earth is great for sourcing new surf spots. I use it all the time to check which ways beaches are facing. Kill hours there.

Back to work – or the beach. Adios, Ugios
Last night a stealth 2-footer kicked up on a bank at South Bondi. Impressive…seeing it was dead flat in the morning.
This morning was smaller, as the swell is now more ENE at a 7.6 second period (windswell – weak). Perfect morning, no clouds, warmer water (22 degrees) and a clean 1-2 foot rideable wave in the corner. When I say rideable…best suited to fat boards with plenty of chunk.
Today is a joy beach day. Get down there for a dip as it hits 28 degrees. Later today the NE winds will flare up to 20 knots, which is fine in the North Bondi protected corner…yeah beers on the grass and watch the sunset.
The forecast for the next 7 days is fine (mostly) and small small small waves. Good time to start daydreaming about overseas waves…changing the wax on your board…go shopping with the lil’ lady.
Tengirri Mentawai Island Tours
There are 2 half filled trips on Tengirri that you could be on…
24-Feb-09 to 08-Mar-09 (5 spots available)
09-Mar-09 to 18-Mar-09 (8 spots available)
Tengirri is the boat I go on and can recommend it – has the best cook in the islands (important) [email protected] / 0414 444 707 / www.tengirri.com
Today is hosting some of the worst surf conditions I’ve seen in a while.
Onshore 1 footers with insistent rain. Can only get better from here…not for a few days though.
Sitting in the car park I opted not to shoot any pictures of this ‘Turneresque’ grey landscape – instead here is a little island 18 kilometres off the coast of Perth – yeah Rotto! This A-Class reserve has some of the best beaches in the world. Even when the Freo Doctor is tearing through Perth you can still find a secluded, protected bay with ridiculously aqua coloured water. Not a bad option for today.
Time to get fit and burn off the Long weekend indulgences. Evolution run 6am training sessions predominantly in the beaches of the east and now offering 6 free sessions to Aquabumps readers. Call 0438 13 15 17 or check out their website
There was a micro wave hitting a shallow bank at Bondi. Well kinda… 1 footers predominantly broke with chilly water (boardies alone is not sufficient).
Waht a steamy night (not talking about with the little lady)…it’s bakin’ again down the beach with massive morning crowds enjoying the fruits of mid-summer. Maximum of 30 degrees today – but very sticky and humid.
Happy Australia Day – the one day where you can run around Bondi with a VB carton on your head, an Aussie flag Cape and kinda blend in with the crowds. Not much surf this long weekend either….all NE mini wind swells.
The Aquabumps Gallery will be closed Sunday and Monday this weekend (1st Sunday it’s been closed in 3 years so cut us some slack). But we’re open tomorrow (Sat) 10am to 6pm.
Random News::Dead Body was found at Bondi yesterday around 10am near one of the sewage pipes off the Gold Course cliffs. The body is male and unidentified.
Have a great long weekend :: uge
I was surprised to see a little wave in close to shore this morning.
Sets would have been around 2 foot, breaking left and right. Nice morning to go for a surf as its currently 27 degrees (at 8am)….which is really hot for this time of day.
Bondi Beach was packed by 7am … People everywhere kicking off their days with their own morning rituals…meditating, swimming, Chinese-fan-karate-thai-chi-thingin’?, walking the dog or dusting off after sleeping on the beach – not making it far from the Bondi Hotel.
Expect a steamy equatorial style day with 35 degrees forecasted. Enjoy it now before the winds pick up to 25 knots and the thunderstorms hit this afternoon. Surf should be similar tomorrow…(I think)
You know the surf is bad when you see guys walking away from the beach with dry hair. (especially learners on those Chinese $200 mini mals). We’ve got a flimsy NE swell that is just breaking at Maroubra, but not really anywhere else. Bondi was pretty much flat apart from the solo shorey I capture in one of today’s photos. Yawn. Pass the crumpets old boy.
Checking the surf forecast for the next 7 days is like checking your share portfolio – DIRE. There is no swell relief on the way – small conditions for the next week so best get onto those jobs you’ve been procrastinating about.
Bustin down the door
Last night I saw ‘Bustin Down the Door’ at the open air cinema with the man grommets. Gotta say it’s a great movie documenting the early origins of the ASP World Surfing Tour. The film focuses on the characters who made it all happen in Hawaii – Rabbit, MR, Thomson brothers, Eddie Rothman, Ian Cairns, PT to name a few. Well worth seeing…amazing times on the rock between 1974-1976 – more info
Sorry about the late report – got distracted. Another magnificent start to the day – clear skies, warm(ish) water, north swell with north winds.
Last night we saw a mini-spike in swell…but today it was 1 foot maybe 2 feet..best suited to large surfcraft. Perfect beach weather right now…enjoy it now as a late thunderstorm is due. Hope all is fine for ‘Bustin’ down the door’ at the outdoor cinema.
Tomorrow should see a slight increase in NE swell. Nothing major happening this week in the surf department.
Don’t forget tomorrow night arty surf films at the Bondi Surf Bather’s Lifesaving Club (next to Bondi Pavilion) Wed 21st Jan – 8:00 pm. (1 night only in Bondi) buy tickets
What’s left of this dribbling south swell is breaking around 1-2 foot in the shallows of Bondi. Fat ones broke well out the back fizzling to shore (fools gold), whilst the odd shorey had a mini-section. All in all its not great – yet surfable. The summer’s bake continues as it will hit 27 degrees, plus north east winds, typical of a day like this.
Perusing the swell radar, it’s going to be small all week. I’d say 1-2 foot for most of it (and predominantly northerly winds). Definitely a week to just lay on the beach should you still be fortunate to be on holidays (slackers). Have a great week :: uge
The beach was packed yesterday…barely a scrap of sand spare… At 3pm yesterday thick clouds crawled across Bondi’s summery beachscape. Within minutes of the first thunder clap we had howling onshores and the beach was cleared in minutes.
I was quite surprised to see clean conditions and the odd 2-3 footer this morning. It’s a south swell with a period of 6.3 seconds which in English means ‘weak wind waves’. Winds are currently SW offshore and will swing onshore SE at 20-25 knots later today (that’s strong like last night).
Waves should pick up over the weekend (from the south) but the winds are forecasted SE for most, but not as strong as this afternoon. Bondi should have a few 3-4 footers and stay out of the breeze.
The New Gallery
The new gallery, as always, is open all weekend 10am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday. You’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street, Bondi Beach (few doors up from Thai Terrific and behind the Bondi Hotel). Telephone 9130 7788
The swell has dropped as the thermometer soars sky high. A fat 38 degrees forecasted for today so join 30,000 other people on Bondi beach for the afternoon’s bake. At 6:30am you could already feel the intensity of the heat…it’s going to be a scorcher.
Waves were 1-2 foot at Bondi and very, very weak. Busy as well. Beginners lettin’ rip – be careful of the loose boards.
Swell is still from the ENE so other beaches like The Bra would be picking up more swell. Winds will swing from NW to NE 10-15 knots before BANG – a south change of 20-30 knots will cool this town down and clear the beach within minutes (always a good to watch the beach go from a dreamy beach scene into 30 knots of chaotic rage, brollies flying down Curlewis Street, buses packed with escapees)
Tomorrow will not be a surf day whilst Saturday has some new south swell (3-4 foot), but the wind will be 20 knots (South onshore). Should be good fun on Sunday with south swell and NE wind combo.
Watch the latest arty surf films at Bondi Surf Bather’s Lifesaving Club Wed 21st Jan – 8 pm. 1 night only in Bondi. www.souledout.net.au
Happy Birthday Christian (mad dog)
It may be your first week back at work but today is a great day to wag work and bake it out of town.
Bondi and surrounds don’t look like they have much going on, but somewhere is going off with 3-4 footers at East facing beaches (and NE winds)…you’re dreaming if you think I am going to reveal today’s location. A hot beachie far from the city’s hustle.
Hot waves and some really talented young surfers rippin’ it to shreds. Expect to drop tomorrow…enjoy it whilst it lasts ::uge
Water temp: 21
Maximum (land): of sunny 29 degrees on the land
Swell direction: East
Period: 10 seconds
High tide: 1.9m at 11:30am
Low tide: 5am and 6pm
There are waves today at east exposed beaches. Good waves. With a 9-10 second period, the power might tweak up a little. I’d say it’s one of the better days this week but you’ll have to get out of Bondi – which is neglecting the energy source.
A bakin’ 28 degrees is forecasted for today. It is a good day to set up a camp on a uncrowded remote beach, pack the esky and find a peak without a sole. And that’s just what we’re gonna do now…
The Aquabumps Gallery is open today 10am to 7pm, 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (behind Bondi Hotel) Telephone 9130 7788
We’ve got a new East swell and summery NE winds to kick this week off. I am not in Bondi, but I’ve been told its 2 foot in the corner and offshore. (I would also assume a very large crowd out for the early seeing it is a stunning day with a max 25).
At 9:50am a king tide will hit Sydney (just above 2 metres). The surplus of water into our bays will drown this small swell so you will have to go surfing well before or after 10am. These king tides only happen twice a year, one at night, one during the day…so you will be able preview the future’s rising sea levels. Lucky we don’t have a big swell otherwise we’d lose half the beach.
Hope today isn’t your first day back at work from the Christmas break – perfect beach day today. We return to Bondi Wed but the Aquabumps Gallery is still open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 7pm, all weekend 10am to 6pm ::uge
Happy New Year and bring orrn 2009. We’re not completely back on board, just in between trips and thought it was time to change my homepage as I tracked thousands still hittin’ it every day since we’ve been on hols. You could do with a change of scenery.
G’day From WA
They weren’t mucking around when they claimed Perth (WA) to be the second windiest city in the world. Damn blowing a gale for the whole 12 days that I was lurking. Not just a subtle puff of 5 knots like Bondi – we’re talking 30 – 40 knots of the Freo Doctor ripping shreds off the little boom town.
Fortunately the tiny island of Rottnest provides some sanctuary from the howling winds, as the north side of the island remains calm and glassy, hidden from the blow. Here is some shots from the little island gem. Some of the best colours you’ll find in Australia…
The Souled Out Surf Film Festival is about to start touring…well what is it? It’s the Australian Surf Movie festival that tours annually at this time of year, but this year has taken a more artistic path showing films such as “UNDER THE SUN” by Cyrus Sutton and “SURFING 50 STATES” where two young Aussies venture off to America with the simple idea of surfing the US in all 50 states, what ever it takes.
