Aloha, I just arrived in Hawaii…wow. The north shore to be exact.
Hawaii has eluded me for years – been meaning to come for a decade…I just kept on getting distracted by all the other options now available to surfers these days (we’re spoilt). It’s great to walk around here, feel like I know the place through all the photos I’ve seen. The local crew all look my brothers and sisters – one guy calling me Kalani Robb in the Foodland carpark?
The trades are blowing and there is swell around. The locals call it a ‘small to medium’ swell – erm triple head? What tha? I think they’re having a lend…Waimea Bay is breaking, bit fat, but wow what a take off…and Pipeline had some grinders in real close, looked deadly as the peaked shifted up and down the beach. Might not start off there…as only 1 guy out and he was copping it – ambulance in the carpark ready to go.
I am embarrassed with my redundant Sydney quiver and have to go find a board bigger than 7 foot ending in a pintail. Most crew are carrying around 7’6”+ boards around the place!
The surf looks 3 foot and a onshore mess back home. Sorry. Don’t know what else to say…
How’s this turtle that rolled up 20 metres away from me whilst I was writing the report…thought he was coming into the house!
Post up your north shore stories, tips ramble here.
Would have to be one of the worst surf days down at Bondi this year…pretty much dead flat and damp. I am not going to show you what I shot this morning – ain’t pretty…so here is some joy from the recent Boost Mobile Surf Sho down at Bondi.
The good news it can only get better from here as the swell should come up tomorrow and remain 2-3 foot until Sunday. It does appear to have SE or E winds flanking, which is predominantly onshore…but that’s ok, as long as there are waves.
Back to work folks. Nuttin’ doing down here that’s for sure!
Sad news – The Sunset Grill at Padang Padang (Bali) burnt down a few nights ago. You can donate funds to help build this institution. I remember eating there last year…’twas good.
PS – check out the architect that designed the Aquabumps gallery. He’s good.
Hasn’t been much to surf for a few days now. The north swell neglects most of our beaches and is better north side. We had a little semi-surfable shorey at 1 foot(ish). Sets were infrequent and a paddle was more about being in the 24 degree water than surfing anything substantial.
Decent sunrise, as fast as it was, pink stripes hovered over Ben Buckler for a few minutes before dissolving back to greys.
Forecast: Not much over 2 foot this week…good one to crank out the work. Easter, east swell north winds may be alright…
Tama to Cloey
The 2.5km ocean swim from Tamarama to Clovelly is on Easter Monday, 5th April 2010 at 11am. A unique swim along the cliffs, not one that you’ll be doing on your own – Enter Here ocean swimmers
The Aquabumps gallery will be shut over Easter Fri-Monday…we’re doing some maintenance and I will be in Hawaii. Ha!
To do list 23-03/2010:
a) Grab a wide board and go surfing on those fattie two footers. Nice right hander in the middle of Bondi but plenty of human flotsam and jetsam out there. Wow – wear a helmet and live longer.
b) 6:30pm tonight, go to “The Happening” where surf music + art + film melt together into a fun night. Tix still available at the door (Bondi Pavilion door that is). More
c) Pick up a 6’6” pin tail and some new undies for Hawaii next week. 1st day I get there it’s going to be big…
d) Go to the Aquabumps Gallery and check out some of these images printed large. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach telephone 02 9130 7788
e) Lunchtime snooze under a tree after a swim. Yep.
f) join the Aquabumps fanpage
Hava a good weekend kids, not much to surf this weekend in Sydney :: uge
Bonus snaps | Wheels post surf | 2 x Birds | Bec from Roxy
A little spike in swell is puttin’ on some 3 footers down at Bondi. Unfortunately the SE wind is still on it creating a bit of bump and wobble. I thought it was going to be much bigger and better than it really is. Boo.
Winds will go north later, so that will clean it up. Nice day outside, max 26 degrees. Water is still warm and a few cloudy patches but predominantly sunny day. This swell will slowly decline into the day…it’s from the dead south (180 degrees for the wave techies)…so only extreme south facing beaches will show most of this size even though there is a healthy wave period of 14 seconds.
Go here for a very good (local) ’cause. Trust me.
Have a good day, uge
Strange old day out there. To start with I thought the waves were going to be orn, like it was last night. Nope. Dropped back and messed up. Bondi was predominantly closing out 2-3 foot…nothing special.
A ground swell from the south will build during the day as the SE winds come up. Tomorrow looks good in theory with a north wind + south swell combo – but I am sceptical that any sand formations will hold quality.
Local surfer/shaper and good bloke Andrew Harris (AH) is having a big factory surfboard sale on Saturday 27th March (10am to 4pm). Up to 30% off new and used boards. Bargain! Punch 27/15 Meadow Way, Banksmeadow into the GPS and pick up a new stick for winter.
This place is mental! Adios, ::Ugios
Nice little clean bump out there this morning with very few people around in the darkness (the sun didn’t pop out until 7:20am). Water is ridiculously warm, the sun is out, the wind is gentle – sounds good huh.
Most waves struggled above the 2 foot mark…odd bigger 3 foot set. Shame the banks haven’t come to the party and anything decent was closing out. Just a nice morning to be out there floating around. Thursday is the pick of the days this week.
‘The Happening’ is a celebration of surf culture and community. It reaches beyond the waves into the realm of music, art and film. After an overwhelming response to the 2008 event, The Happening finally returns to Australia this Friday night, 6:30pm at the Bondi Pavilion. The event will bring together in one space: Brushfire Records musicians Matt Costa, Zee Avi, Neil Halstead and Will Conner; film-makers George Greenough, Chris and Emmett Malloy – previews of 180° South and The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights – plus the exhibited works of contemporary artists from The Surf Gallery, California and local artists (and Aquabumps!). Come see. Purchase your tix here
I went to a Tama SLSC fundraiser once and Roy (as in Roy and HG) got up and spoke about Aquabumps, and how he got wind of a good shoe sale from reading this little daily blurb. Well Roy, Springcourt have now got a online store. Get a pair before they sell out – I wear ‘em every day. New website
PS – thanks for all your comments about our 11th year.
Hard to believe it but Aquabumps turns 11 this week. Yep. 11!
Bit freaky really, can’t believe that many digits have passed and the audience has grown and grown and grown.
Don’t worry, I am not going to get all emotional nor are we throwing a huge party like we did a few years ago – just a BIG thanks for reading this thing, it’s been a nice little journey turning it into something bigger than I ever dreamed of. Loads of people come into the gallery and say they’ve been reading this daily email for 8-9 years…impressive, puttin’ up with all those typos and all.
When I check into my Google analytics I am amazed at what countries follow Aquabumps…name a country and there are subscribers (e.g. Poland/Russia). Anyway…post a comment up here if you feel like it, tell us where you are from, or why you check in here regularly.
Back to waves – it was a bit disappointing all weekend without swell…waves finally arrived today and the southerly is on it putting the wobble on those faces. Bondi had sets 3-4 foot with barely anyone out at all…good day to go for a paddle.
Impressive sunset at North Bondi last night. Amazing colours as the skies filled with storm clouds that brought the howling winds last night. The bbq lid is probably in the neighbour’s yard again.
Seeya, :: Uge
The ocean looked a little lethargic this morning. The swell period pushed up but waves were smaller than yesterday. Bondi had a weak, dribbly 1-2 footer at sunrise (7am)…loads of crew flappin’ around in search of their very own bump. Swell seems to be in the middle of switching from south to nor-east…as later in the day something new should arrive and peak at 3 feet (NE).
Loads of cyclone activity up north as Ului comes close to the Queensland coastline. May I suggest driving far north this weekend. The further up you go the better.
We will still get waves in Sydney, especially on Sunday where you may see a wave as big as 5 foot. In fact most places in Australia will have waves this weekend.
The 3 big surf shops in Bondi along Campbell parade are having a big sale this weekend. That’ll be Rip Curl, Bondi Surf Co. and Bondi Underground. 30-50% off boards, wetties, clothes. Go sort yourself out. Friend up with their fan page to get the latest deals.
…and we’re open all weekend, as usual 10am to 6pm Sat/Sun…that’s the Aquabumps Gallery…that long skinny driveway that we converted into a gallery.
Good bye. ::uge (pronounced yooj)
Hola. Nice little wave breaking down at Bondage – nasty rip sucking you out to Ben Buckler though. That kept me busy all morning whilst swimming with zee camera. Hard to stay in one place.
Waist high/2 footers rockin’ in. Water is warm, no wind, and plenty of sunshine to enjoy the dregs of summers.
Swell will switch to NE (must be all that activity up off QLD)…and should build.
High tide midday, low tide 5:30am. Max 27 degrees (nice).
A few weeks ago thousands of you completed a survey to help us steer the Aquabumps empire in the right direction. Thank you for all that participated. Great info. Now, we promised a $1050 acrylic from the Aquabumps gallery to one lucky winner who filled in the data…and the winner is Aidan Beanland from Northern Beaches. Nice one.
Sam the Fruit Man
Every week I get a fruit’n’veg box off local surfer Sam Reid. He drives out to the big markets to get the fresh stuff and then drops if off at your door. Good service. Now doing Sonoma bread too! More
The first morning in months where you could feel that autumn chill in the air. Coulda done with a jumper.
Water is still warm, waves are still 1-2 foot, clean, crisp and playful.
Tomorrow the waves should pick up in the afternoon, Friday will be a 3 foot playground and the weekend has some new NE swell hitting with force. Sunday, mmm Sunday has got something decent cooking. ‘Tis about time.
Until then, enjoy the amazing autumn weather, go lie out on the grass at lunch.
We have found that 1 guy for our Mentawai boat trip. Ta.
Got sent this from one of our readers – amazing.
Special kind of day today – a cracker. Light offshores (w) with plenty of sunshine. Small 1-2 foot waves (surfable on mals and fishes).Warm land temps with a max of 26…ah yes, a perfect day to be down the beach. The current plague of jelly fish in town are reaping havoc amongst swimmers…still.
Incredible sunrise…I had a meeting in the city at 7am. Was torturous leaving so much colour in the revision mirror. Got the start of the pre-dawn glow. See uncropped sunrise shot
As the wave period steps up you may get a slight improvement tomorrow…Friday arvo should be better. Hang tight.
What an incredible weekend of surfing at Bondi. Overloaded. All memory cards are full of tantalising heavenly punts…I have never had my finger on the trigger as much as the past 48 hours. In every direction I looked someone was bustin’ a tail out, doing a flip or was just walking around being a world champion.
So you all know Owen Wright, the sky pilot from Lennox took the $25k loot in finals yesterday. He was awarded a 9.8 with a massive front side punt. Huge crowd banked up all the way to the top of the grass. What a great atmosphere…lucky the waves came good for the finals, as Saturday was embarrassing how bad it was – onshore week 2 foot slush…
Keen to hear all your stories and thoughts of the Boost Surf Sho here.
Today there are waves, good ones too. It’s all cleaned up now that the carnival has moved out of town. Get out there on the low tide.
More photos of the Boost Surf Sho on our facebook page (I am still copying half the shots to the server, so more to come)
PS – I have a spare spot on a Mentawai Charter 8-20 May 2010. If you’re a good bloke, can surf, and are low maintenance then this trip may be for you…contact
“It’s been a long time between drinks for a contest at Bondi, since ’88. I like Bondi a lot, it’s cool. It’ll be fun to be there and have a contest. It doesn’t sorta happen there very much. Usually its Rod Kerr running around the beach in his Speedos. But the rest of us are going to show up and wear our trunks. We’ll see you there.” said Kelly Slater, 9 time world champ.
Yes yes yes. The Boost Surf Sho begins down at Bondi today and finishes on Sunday. Talented sky pilots popping airs all over the place this morning – regardless of the horrendous 2 foot onshore slop. It’s quite a humbling experience when big names like Travis Logie and Jordy Smith are surfing your local. On a wave you’ll barely get going on, they’re bustin’ the back end out landing in reverse. Spectacular…
So what’s the deal I hear you say (and those 20 people emailing me asking wha’ts happening)? Today they’re running the juniors until 3pm. Tomorrow they reckon it will start at 8am with Round 1, then celebrity challenge until 1pm, 1-2:30pm semis, 2:30-3pm preso. Sunday holds the finals, wheel rounds, jetski expression sessions (HOT) and bands….but best you read their site for more info. Yes girls, Kelly Slater is here and sipping latte’s at Gusto’s, keep your undies on. Jordy, Taj, Owen Wright are all here also! WOW! So best be in Bondi this weekend – and since you’re around, drop by the Aquabumps Gallery – 151 Curlewis Street Bondi (still lost?)
We will be doing some updates over the weekend and latest info on our Facebook page – become a fan and get the inside. Aquabumps will be shooting the Jetski expression session from the chopper on Sunday, to get a unique angle on the giant punts.
Adios, :: Ugios
PS – there was a small earthquake off Seal Rocks last night (3.25am). It lasted a few seconds and registered 3.4 on the Richter scale. Think all is fine.
Mornin’. In our recent survey one of our learnings is that a large portion of you live over the northern beaches. Try get over there a bit more.
Today comes to you from Manly, the land of the tall pines. Always a good place to hide from the shredding southerlies which are currently blowing tumbleweed down George Street. There was the odd fat 3 footer out there…quite bumpy.
Winter conditions are here, and the south swell is building. Should be up around 5-6 foot by night fall, but the winds are a problem. Southerly onshores through to next week. Boo.
Bondi was a mess this morning. Don’t bother.
At least there will be a few lips for the Boost Air Sho that starts tomorrow.
Not much doin’ down at Bondi…wrong conditions for us.
Very different to yesterday. Initially it was offshore, small NE swell trickling in, overcast and drizzle.
1 hour later the south change hit, making a onshore mess of things.
This wind will brew a new swell, just wait a while for it to do its thing. I’d expect 3 footers by night fall.
Could only get 1 snap before rain kept forcing me back into the car – so here is a mixed bag to entertain you today.
PS – follow us on facebook for the latest
Immaculate morning down at Bondi. Light winds, glassy surfaces, small weak 1-2 footers (very inconsistent) and blanketing morning rays. Too good to not get in the water. If you’re surfing you’ll need a decent chunk of fibreglass to get going on the high tide lumps. The 10 second wave period is putting huge lulls in between waves – your hair will probably dry in between sets.
29 bakin’ beach degrees today. Hit the beach now as the rest of the week looks like winter – 19-22 degrees.
Five things you need to know:
Taj Burrows won the 1st World Tour stop up at Snapper last Friday. He’s on a roll.
‘The Corner House’ – New wine bar/Italian restaurant has opened at 281 Bondi Road – anyone been, feedback?
The Noosa Festival of Surfing kicks off this Sunday. 700 competitors in 20 separate divisions…
The Boost Air Sho – The big guns are heading to Bondi this week 12-14th March. It’s about the only time you’ll see Kelly Slater surfing Bondi (Taj and Owen Wright will also be attending). Hot.
Gorillaz Plastic Beach – The Gorillaz have launched a new album and found a kooky little island.
Have a great day, ::uge
The sunrises are late at the moment (6:40am) with the day light savings extra hour. That’s convenient as I don’t have to wake up at 5am to get a decent shot. (soon to change)
Great colours this morning as a thick clouds lit up into a fireball, which only lasted minutes. Click here to see a panoramic version.
The surprise pulse of ENE swell that hit yesterday has calmed down a little. Bondi had a weak 2 footer this morning…still fun. Water temp has dropped a smidge due to the incessant NE winds…wear a springy. High tide 3am, low tide 10am, high tide 4pm. Land temp max 28 degrees, and the northerlies will continue to howl 25 knots today.
Waves should get better from Wednesday onwards.
The legendary shaper/indo explorer Jim Banks is starting his Indonesian Odyssey April 11. He’s giving away a spot on the first leg of the journey – just subscribe to Jim’s site and you go in the draw.
I don’t know what happened to the surf overnight, but whatever it was, it’s evil.
The small 14 second ground swell of yesterday has, well, pretty much gone even though my charts said it should’ve hang around longer.
The next 3 days look dire. Virtually no swell and rain until Monday.
Been following the Goldie Quiky Pro? Looks howling onshore today and they’re running the girls at the moment – the men’s are on standby…if they run, a winner will be crowned.
Everyone asks me where that island resort was that I stayed at off Bali, it’s Batu Karang – click that big box to your right.
Adios :: ugios
Just a reminder – The Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend 10am to 6pm 151 Curlewis Street Bondi. 9130 7788.
Hello. What a nice morning. Strip of clouds highlighted first light, gentle offshore winds at Bondi and a neat little 2-3 footer in the corner. The swell period boasts 14 seconds, but there is no swell size to compliment such a high figure. That translates to a very inconsistent morning, long waits, but the odd bomb set worth it. Bit of a pulse later today…
The sand bank setup has changed, and the right out the back doesn’t seem to be holding up as well as it did last week. I still witnessed Ricky Scott pulling into a full cave, and make it (sorry Ricky, I missed the money shot as I had blown my CF buffer on the wave before! [email protected]#$)
Round 4 Quiky Pro is on and you can watch it live right now. Mick Fanning, current world champ was just beaten by Kai Otton (17th seed)! Finals should run tomorrow (or next Tuesday)….looks like 4 footers but onshore.
Zee Aquabumps Gallery is open as usual, 10am to 6pm and you’ll find it at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (still lost?) Telephone 02 9130 7788
Special thanks to Mark Kelly (Global Surf Industries) and Dan (Huffer) for helping out Kid Caleb with some product (he’s the surfer I said ‘someone sponsor this guy’)
Have a good day, uge
Still junkie out there this morning…but the swell is leaping up by the hour. At sunrise it was only 2 foot…and looking quite dire. When I last checked around 9am, sets were hitting the 3- 4 foot mark as the swell period rockets from 8 secs to 14 seconds. Oh, and another good thing is the winds are swinging from this SE onshore slop maker to cleaner NE offshores (at south facing beaches). Good combo. Decent swell until Friday lunchtime.
Snapper Rocks Quiky Pro is on today. Round 3, Heat 5 Bobby Martinez versus Andy Irons as I write this – very distracting indeed. Very. Watch Dane Reynolds Rnd2 heat here. WOW. Not much work going down today. Tossing up whether to head up there.
Have a good day, uge
I like these types of mornings. Thick grey overcast skies threaten rain and strong winds. A new south swell, still junkie from recent agitation, breaking around 3 foot. Almost NO-ONE around getting in your way and the onshore seems to put a little lip in the normally fat, flat lumps found at Bondi.
Only a hand full of very keen regulars out there this morning…Kid Caleb was out there – absolutely slaying (he’s the kid doing backside aerials on every wave). Please someone sponsor that guy. In my mind, he’s one of the best surfers in the area. You’ll find him working down at the Bottl’o on Campbell Parade near the primary school.
The surf improves tomorrow night. Later:: uge
PS – howz about joining our facebook page? Why? simple reasons like we’ll notify you when we’re in a chopper shooting etc. Do it now (please)
Bondi tsunami – ain’t that a jap feature film or sumpin’? You all know by now that we had a Tsunami warning in Sydney yesterday and all metro beaches where closed (they even called off the Quiky Pro for the day) . We’ll we’re still here, the gallery (which is very close to the water’s edge) hasn’t washed away…quite ironic really as yesterday was one of the flattest days in a long time.
A south change tore through town in the middle of the last night, bringing rain, wind and things that resemble mashed waves. Not 1 person out this morning – which says it all. Wait ‘til these howling onshores subside. Thursday looks damn good. Work your week around that!
On Saturday I took some shots from the bird again whilst on our way down to Cronulla for the RedBull Helisurf race. Great colours on Saturday morning…
