'Pop' surfer: Perth Standlick

overzealous

I shot a lot of pics this morning – more than normal. I am not sure if it was because:

a) I read too many photography books on the weekend (and was a bit overzealous)
b) Had too many coffees
c) There was just a lot going on this morning down the beach (pros, airs, golden light, sunrises yew)
d) There was a neat lil’ 1-2 footer in the corner
e) All of the above

Our local pro, Perth Standlick, was back in town for 24hrs on route to Bali after gallivanting around the nation. He said he’s back today to wash his clothes. Always a talent to shoot as he boosts on a 1 footer…you guys try doing that.

Surfing wonder kid Jordy Smith has just won Billabong Pro J-Bay to take out his first tour event over Lennox Head shredder Adam Melling. Waves looked so fun over the past few days – you must watch the final here. Jordy Smith is now placed No.1 on the world tour ladder with Taj 2nd, Slater 3rd.

Shot a pic of the Astra Building this morning. Interesting building in that it’s now a retirement village but once was a notorious place to buy late night illegal liquor and heroin. It’s also said to be where AC/DC played one of their finest performances in the bottom bar (where Bondi Tratt is now).

Ok, it’s Monday and you probably have a lot to do, back to it. Storm coming this arvo. Later :: uge

  1. Astra also saw an amazing show from the Angels one night with Doc Neeson climbing all over top balcony while caught Chrissy Amphlett in her school uniform fronting the Divinyls in front of about 10 smackies and some very heavy maoris in the pool room. Not a back packer in sight. Those were the days.

  2. Hi there
just wanted to let you know of the sad news that Paul Cram (local surfing legend – shaper and general nice guy “R Rated Surfboards” took his own life last Thursday evening 15/7.
This is very sad – he was a lovely guy who was a very talented surfer/shaper who’s family heritage is from Bondi. Apparenty he was going through some difficult times but was not one to complain, such a shame.
I admired his easy going attitude and how he was not angry at seeing Bondi change so much during his life – especially with the out of control crowds in the water.
    RIP mate.

  3. Hi, love your photos! Here’s an Astra story that seemed to amuze Lydia. Like we were at the Coogee Bay playing pool and I won the raffle, which was a hplate of fresh fish. That was good, so it seemed like a plan to go get some hash for the evening. Then this Maori appeared and said ‘I’ll know where to go’. We got in the car, and went to Bondi where he made us wait. We waited. Someone said ‘he’s not coming back’, and none of us could find him. I figured we were just around the corner from The Astra, and walked right into the pool area . . . and a mob of really huge Moari guys. ‘uh oh! better act in charge’, I thought and headed for the guy I was after. ‘Oi! where’s our money’, and fortunately he crumpled, cracked up, broke down, felt shamed, and became really whingy. ‘That’s good’ I thought. I semed to have everone’s full attention, from my position at the centre of a circle of some 20 guys leaning on their pool ques. It was all about saving face for this guy, and he handed back what was left of our $30.00. Right. Getaway time, accross the flashing disco floor, trying to continue some kinda 70s tough guy bluff. Better not run, just walk The others were amazed that I got the money back, and I think we got a bottle of wine to have with the fish instead. Cheers.

  4. Paul was a great guy, always had a smile and took time to chat.. never a day went past where you would not see him smile.. RIP mate… Us at HH Bondi Beach will miss you…
