Ni hao

Hurro from China. Kane Skennar got out at Bondi to shoot my morning snaps again today seeing I’m a long way from the beach. Fortunately it looks like the onshore wind has died down, the waves are 2-3 foot and a few junkie opportunities around the place. Tomorrow should be cleaner (but again smaller) – maybe that will do the trick.

I am still in China. Here’s some wow Chinese facts…there are 1.3 billion people in China (just think about that for a second – that’s 60 times the total number of Aussies). In order to control overpopulation the government implement the controversial 1 child policy. But if your 1st born is female you can have another crack at a boy or if you live on a farm you’re exempt. China has waves – yep – you’ll find them at Hainan Island (in the South China Sea). Looks fickle but I’ve seen pictures of waves there. Not sure it will be dubbed the next Mentawais – but it’s a wave. They’re going through a massive industrial boom here, they make everything here. Even half of me.

Adios :: uge

P.S. SMH wrote up about our little Speedo/Aquabumps range.

When you have 10,000 employees you need a locker room just for tea cups

They've locked me in this room for 3 days. Need beach.

  1. At least you were just locked in there… looks like its full of bullet holes.
The room for the slow workers, perhaps?

  2. Ha ha Uge,

Now you get a taste of what it is like to get bumps when you are in a place with no beach or waves. A little ray of sunshine in a otherwise dirty, concrete jungle, blue sky less day.

Lap up the air quality :-))

Sanya in the south of Hainan I’ve seen with good surf many times. Go for a body bash and freak out the security guards.

  3. Ha Ha Uge,

You leave town and you score the biggest PR coup in Aquabumps history. (Big pic and write up about the Aquabumps swimwear range in the SMH today).

Well done – the swimwear looks fab. How about a range of nice AquaBumps maternity wear next?

  4. Not sure about Maternity wear. I saw from the plane waves out the back of Hong Kong – if I had time I’d have a look – press checking the book print run in down town Shenzen baby – woooweee, she’s all concrete here! ::uge

  5. Yes Tom – they’ve put me in the room with all the slow people. A factory like this would scare you tom – they have to work longer than 2 hour shifts! ::uge

  6. Ah, Hainan Dao and Sanya – strange body surfing conditions when I was there, and a huge rip – quite scary when most Chinese people can’t swim, even those who get in the water at the beach. The food there is fantastic! Tropical China – two words you don’t see together too often!

  7. Hainan and HK do get waves. We’re fans of your work in HK Uge, we have a raft, inboard Mastercraft and some photo gear for when it’s flat…if u have 1/2 a day we’d take u out on it!

    1. Vinni – good offer and if I wasn’t fly in fly out I’d take you up on the raft ride any day. thanks for tuning in. Had dinner at Gray’c Cafe, Upper house the other night – FAR OUT – what a view from up dere! loved it…

  8. Thanks for the link to my site – http://www.sanyasurf.com – a bit outdated but shows some of the potential of this place.
China certainly has heaps of waves that have yet to be discovered, and we’ve found some real gems out here hidden up and down the coast.

You might also check out http://www.surfinghainan.com while you’re down here – and keep an eye on the news here come November, when the ASP holds it’s first ‘Women’s Longboarding’ even up at Riyue Wan.

    Cheers,
