Tama 7:01am, taking a dip

: : a b o v e

Today we take a fresh angle on our beaches, from the bird – sky high. Beautiful morning, small ‘n’ surfable 2 footers, clean crispy morning light – this is how it’s meant to be. With a maximum of 27 degrees, tools down and hit the beach, you can work another day.

It’s been a pretty rough summer in Sydney with rare glimpses of sunshine and tiny swells. If you want to get away and catch the end of the Hawaiian surfing winter (which is warmer than our summer), our buddies at Turtle Bay Resort are offering Aquabumps readers a special room rate until the end of March. Book in now online. It’s a great deal, the waves at this time of year on the North Shore of Hawaii are uncrowded and with 26 degrees in the water and out…how could ya not!

  1. Is it a good day for a rant Uge?
I’m not so sure it ever is but lefts roll with it anyway…
I understand that Bondi was super packed this morning, and I understand that people will snake/drop-in/get confused/make mistakes when catching waves and am happy to deal with that, its all part of the surfing thing. The one thing I find it hard to deal with is when people are paddling back out the back and don’t give preiority to the surfer on the wave. These paddlers should try and paddle into the white water side of the surfer instead of the open face (or shoulder) of the wave. The slightly greater effort of having to duck-dive the white water will no doubt give the surfer on the wave a much better ride. I could not believe how many people do not even show the slightest bit of courtesy to the surfer on the wave, some people paddling seem to try to paddle into the surfers lines, just to annoy the surfer.

Now please don’t get me wrong, I know Bondi is full of beginers, and this tyrade is not directed at them, I understand they are just trying to not to drown out there. Most of the time, they are the ones who actually make an effort to get out of your way and say sorry (in a variety of languages) when they get it wrong. I am directing this mostly at the, shaggy haired, bearded, denim short wearing, tatooed, retail working, too-cool-for-school, Mr Bondi’s who act like they own our little piece of coast. Especially to those guys who think they are so important that all they have to do is whistle when inside, expecting the surfer to make every avoid them, you may have some fin marks over your lower back pretty soon.

Learn how to duck-dive, paddle inside the surfer on the wave and generally make an effort to not interfere with the surfer’s ride. Everyone will be get better rides, be happier, and froff more for the rest of the day.

    Over to you Uge.

    Jnas

    1. Hey Jnas, yes. agree. That’s good surf etiquette…in Hawaii they’d send you to the beach if you paddled across to the shoulder and disrupted your line. Lots a newbies though as Bondi is a easy wave…

    2. Couldnt even bring myself to go surfing this morning… 2ft, light winds, sunny and clean. Recipe for ULTRA Bondi crowds.

Will wait for it to be side shore, raining and 4ft,,, might get out the surf not feeling like I just driven through peak hour then…

  2. shaggy haired, bearded, denim short wearing, tatooed, retail working, too-cool-for-school, Mr Bondi’s who act like they own our little piece of coast…… hahhahah love it….. nearly choked on my coffee !!

  3. Just laughing at Jnas description of Mr.Bondi …. brought visions of Bondi back for me … just like your photos do each morning!

  4. Hey Uge.. mate of mine .. James Nixon … just opened Boho Bistro 292 Bondi Rd…. tell him I sent you and he probably will comp you a free meal !

    1. yeah jnas sounds like a whingey ninja. loves to have a whinge, but you cant see him from behind his desk.

if you dont like it jnas then why surf there? its not going to change..

  5. Sexy little contraption you had down at Tama this morning…looked like a mini version of U2’s “the claw” stage set-up coupled with something outta Close Encounters. It didn’t look like you had a water housing on the camera…you must have a lot of faith in the pilot and pray that there isn’t a splashdown!
