Bondi 6:30am, this is how it all started today...

Early Blow

Today kicked off well…thin fragmented clouds highlighted by the early morning sun. Real nice. South wind was in early, blowing quite strong and choppin’ up anything worth riding. Bondi had a 1-2 foot shorey that you could get going on…but not worth racing out of bed for. Soak up the sunshine before the storm arrives tomorrow – yep – rain, heavy rain coming. Oh and some wind, 25 knot wind.

After travelling to so many surf destinations I still reckon the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia has the most consistent surf on the planet. I know, I know…you’re busy, time poor, chained to the desk and have just 2 weeks annual leave up your sleeve (been there)…you can’t go hunting for new waves that work 3 times a year. Hawaii is on the tail end of their season…and the Maldives, well, I’ve been there 3 times and only surfed a total of 5 hours (yes, I am a jinx to that beautiful place). Maximise your time off, get a spot on a Mentawai charter boat and surf more than you would in a year around here. Our buddies, the boat we go on, Tengirri have some spots for 2012. Even if you’re not a group and a lone wolf, hit them up. Book

Surfing the Hawaiian Banzai Pipeline is difficult for most humans. Imagine doing it blindfolded. Watch this inspirational video of Brazilian Derrek Rabelo. He’s blind and paddles out at Pipe…I saw him around all the time when I was in Hawaii this season. Respect.
