Bondi 7:00am morning fire

Golden Hour

I love the winter light. When the sun is low on the horizon it puts out a rich, warm hue that is pretty special. It’s a good time to go for a dip, swim out the back and watch the day kick off.

Enough herbal rant. Down to more factual observations of the morning…

There are good (small) waves. Shoulder high. Winds are perfectly offshore (NW). It’s a dead south swell so joints like Curl Curl, Bondi etc are the ones. Low tide is 6:00am, high tide 12:00, water temperature is 18.

Rain will arrive tomorrow and stay for a few days. Big, big swell approaching that will eventuate on Friday. Unfortunately it’s got a strong wind following…

Good bye :: uge

  1. Still not that inspired. Not sure why everyone is forthing over your work. i have no idea what distinguishes photo art

    1. piss off then Jeff, if u dont like it, then dont come to the website! First shot was awsome uge, and the follow up ones were just as good.

    2. Jeff, please don’t post about your artistic ignorance, and you need to check your spelling before you make us read your posts.

  2. Jeff, where is your website with your photos???? What a goose, what a stupid question! U can’t ask someone to explain what u interpret….. IDIOT….

    1. why is it a stupid question? I never said i was a good photographer, or have a website (so half of your comment is not valid, and should not have be written), and I’m not asking someone to interpret photos for me, i was asking about what distinguishes good from great.

  3. I have no credibility on a photography front, but as a lay man, I love seeing the uge photos everyday, Makes me appreciate what an incredibly scenic place we live in. I am often down there at that time surfing and uge captures how magical the sunrise is, being part of it sets you up for a ripper day! And i suppose uge is a platform to share those images with those less fortunate who do not live near the sea. How lucky are we that we actually get to enjoy it! Keep up the good work uge, you put a smile on many faces everyday.

To me a good photo captures the spirit or essence of the moment.
I am sure all the punters that experienced this morning’s session at Bondi will agree that those pics nailed it.

  4. If over 50,000 followers can find UGE’s work interesting and inspiring than he must be doing something right. Its hard to pick up a camera and produce work like UGE does……no matter how good you think you are. A straight forward photo is never straight forward…..

One question I have for ya UGE. Seeing as you shoot in the water within a camera housing….before you jump in the water what settings do you dial into on the camera to make sure your firing off these crystal clear shots?? Is it easy to adjust or you set and forget??

  5. Hello Everyone,

Thank you, as always, for being so into my blog that you all comment. Love it.

When I get up on the morning, I don’t think let’s go create some photo art. I just go, far out it looks nice in the water – let’s go for a swim, take the camera and see what happens.

Basically I just love taking pics. Whether they are art or not – dunno – but don’t really care either.

But what makes a good photo is very personal…changes from person to person…but for me it’s:

Good light (like this morning – I like the backlit gold stuff – but some people don’t – up to you)
Good angles (something you don’t always see every day – low, high or from a chopper is always nice!)
    Good subject matter
Capturing the vibe of the moment

When all the above elements come together – you’ve got yourself a good shot. I reckon.

Have a good day everyone, thanks for tuning in :: uge

  6. My go at a definition:
Photos (what anyone can do) tell you what it looked like.
Art (what Uge does) tells you what it felt like.

    1. hey james, that definition is a cracker! so true! uge’s photos really share with you a little bit of the experience from the actual moment captured! lovely stuff uge as always! love the beautiful sunshine!

  7. good talk guys. You see, if i didn’t even comment no one would have discussed what arouses them about good photography. Peace out, and may your inner self drive you. x

  8. Jeff –

    A good photo:

    (a) it’s about the angle and the vectors. Your eye should be able to sit comfortably in the picture at one focal point – good photos have great symmetry and balance
    (b) Lighting will play a role and should enhance the subject matter and mood
    (c) Subject matter should be original and creative – seeing a particular angle you haven’t seen before and not a cliché.

    * “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like” “If you don’t know much about art, who cares what you think”.

Footnote: Uge’s work is ‘decorative art’ – looks good above a sofa or bed. I will never be ‘high end’ or collectable, but will sell because it is safe and colourful and importantly contains the sea as its subject matter. People like pictures of the sea it appeals to the subconscious.
