Well…it’s been better. As in better waves and better weather. It hasn’t stopped raining for hours and your vehicle is gettin’ a free wash today.
I saw junkie waves around head high, sometimes bigger – but the ocean needs to calm down, so does the wind. It’s no Keramas out there…that’s for sure.
Enjoy the weekend. It’s going to rain until Monday. I recommend watching the latest series of Mad Men thrown in with a batch of Game of Thrones.

It’s nice to have a bit of sunshine, isn’t it? Dry out all the damp from the past few days.
The surf is horrible. Onshore, 4-5 foot, mushy and ugly. This wind should calm down tomorrow…be better then.
I am selling some stuff on ebay…pretty much new 15 inch MacBook Pro, Canon EOS Camera 1d Mark IV (Body Only) which has taken about 70% of the photos you’ve seen on Aquabumps…and a Canon EOS Camera 5d Mark II
Have a good day, uge
Hope you all had a good sleep in. You missed absolutely nothing down the beach this morning. It’s the pits. A 30 knot onshore smothered any goodness…only saw a learner class in the North of Bondi…that’s about it…maybe crank the work.
Keramas is pumping for the world tour stop No.5…I just wish the generator would stop running out of diesel so the webcast would come thru – such a good line up today for Round 4.
If you want to go to Mentawais, where it is pumping today and where some of these photos are taken…go to www.tengirri.com to book your 2014 tour.
Weatherwise…it’s been mental. The most volatile I’ve seen. It has been impossible to predict. I think we are in the middle of a big low pressure system and you’ll never know what’s coming. Fortunately this morning we had a few hours of reprieve from the wind…and a select few paddle out at the Cape to do battle. Sets broke 8 foot plus and you’d need a ski to whip in. Mark Matthews got the wave of the day – just have a look at that first shot above…that’s a crazy beast of a wave. Dropping into ridiculous dangerous waves is not Mark’s only talent…he’s a great public speaker and for hire.
There is swell all week but who knows what is going to happen with this wind that is going to howl. Watch closely.
Adios :: uge
There were waves this morning but no one seems interested in them. I struggled to find anyone surfing. Maybe this good run of swell has worn you all out? Maybe the cold weather and rainy clouds have scared everyone off. Maybe a secret spot is pumping and 100 out. Maybe it’s Monday and everyone has to go to work…
This week has swell every day, just timing is crucial with the winds. Watch closely.
People inspire me every day, but this amazing lady, Pascale, will definitely cheer you up and make you feel lucky for what you have. Watch

The good news is that for the next 7 days there is going to be plenty of swell. That’s pretty typical for this time of year in Sydney.
The trick is finding breaks that can handle the size and out of the wind. Bondi was wobbling around the place…the odd right out the back. Nothing special.
The other good news is that today’s the shortest day of the year meaning we’ve turned a corner and heading back in Summer – well kinda.
Heavy rain due Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Rug up.
This south swell seems to be having trouble sorting itself out. It needs a good strong offshore to iron out all creases. Waves are breaking in the 4 foot plus range this morning at Bondi but they were wobbly and random. Very few guys surfing. Bronte had a little something on offer – but it’s all 2-3 out of 10. Was cold too! Think it got down to single digits.
So…all my mates are floating around on a boat that I chartered in the Mentawai Islands whilst I let my leg mend. They even took our brand new Black Hawk III to document the island chain from a totally new angle. Na, not jealous or nuttin’. Waves look perfect. To rub salt into my wounds they hooked up my satellite and beamed back some photos from yesterday (How very nice of them). Here they are…
These rainy days are hard work for me. Trying to polish the grey mundane into something interesting for you all is no easy feat. Bondi was empty like a ghost town this morning – in and out of the water. The intermittent showers seem to be keeping everyone indoors. The great news is that you can drive around Bondi and actually park your car. How cool is that?
Waves are 4-6 foot, but very messy
Wind is from the SW (strong)
Min. 10 Max. 16 degrees (wintery)
Sunrise is 6:59am as we approach the shortest day of the year
I can remember when Keramas in Bali was this hush-hush, gotta be in the know, off the beating track, perfect right hander that you accessed by scorching your feet on volcanic sand. No car park, no road in, no signs just a hell of a wave with some simple Warungs. Wow things change fast over there…resorts, night surfing, ASP comps and live streaming are what you find at Keramas now. One thing remains the same – The big K is my favourite wave on that island and it looks like the Oakley Pro Bali is hosting all the big names this week – watch
This good ole’ south swell has plenty of beef to it. She just keeps on giving. For about the 4th day in a row we’ve got size, just not quality. I saw waves around 4-6 foot this morning.
Bondi had 3 guys out in the southern corner picking off rights that looked kinda interesting. Be nice if they barreled or had some less wobble.
I’ve been out of the water for 2 weeks now and losing my mind – only probably another 4 weeks to go! I might take up drinking and sit on one of those bar stools at Ravesis, you know, the ones on the corner looking out so I can shoot my pictures of the surf whilst ordering beer. That’s if there is a spare bar stool – I see guys drinking beer there from 10am. If you seeing me doing this – slap me.
If you live around Bondi chances are that you’ve eaten dinner at Brody’s salubrious establishment “The Flying Squirrel” on Bondi Road. Well this Sunday marks the end of an era…the squirrel is running off to chase bigger nuts near the city (opening in September) under the new name of Riley’s Garage. Brody wanted me to thank all his loyal patrons over the past 7 years – Bondi has been good to him. So its probably the best time to score free drinks and food from the Fruity Canadian.
Enough ramble :: u g e
There is plenty of swell today. Bondi was breaking around 6 foot earlier this morning – not looking too pretty as the banks struggle to hold such size. We just don’t have any reefs around here that can take such force.
I went for a drive to a Sydney slab thinking it might just switch on, it didn’t really…wind and directions all wrong. Oh well, can’t be cranking every day – somewhere is pumping right now…somewhere…hope you find it.
I do know that right now it is pumping in the Mentawais. If you haven’t been I’d suggest you make the leap and book a boat charter for 2014. I have. I might even book 2 seeing I missed this year (hold the violins). Tengirri is the boat we go on and they can cater for small groups, fast boat, good food and reliable staff…(and they’re not even bribing me to say that). Go to www.tengirri.com
Bye for now, when this swell settles there may be some gold… : : u g e
Some days it’s pretty tough writing my two paragraphs to you all. I’ve written this spiel 3,500 times over the past 14 years..and the first sentence is always a killer. Takes me ages. I normally hunt around for inspiration (normally a distraction)…I trawl google earth looking for hidden point breaks in Sydney, watch Slater’s Fijian 10’s, read all the swell charts in hope for a boomer approaching, fiddle with my phone or load up on Java until my hands shake and I can barely type. Today I’m skint. Bone dry. So here are the raw facts of today:
It is 15 degrees right now and will top out on 19 degrees
Waves are chest to head high at Bondi, and fun
Rain, wind and big swell arrive tomorrow – ah yes, that thing called winter
The shortest day of year is next week, so hopefully we’ll get some light back in these morning soon
My Mentawai flight leaves in an hour, have fun boys, guttered I am missing this trip
Bye :: uge
What a good start to the day…the small waves continue and the sunshine is abundant. This will all change tomorrow when rain arrives and a thumpin’ new south swell. Super windy on Saturday afternoon (and big) but next week should be fun when it all calms down.
The unstoppable Slater just won Fiji WCT tour stop. He’s surfing better than ever…wow
Have a good day : : u g e
P.S. I’m out of the water for 4-6 weeks with this freakin’ torn hammy, just cancelled a Mentawai trip…so things can only get better from here!
Sorry about the late update, been a little hectic at Aquabumps HQ.
If you’re a new reader of Aquabumps due to our recent exposure – WELCOME (and these updates usually arrive around 10am, promise, swear, for real).
This morning was the calm before the storm…glassy conditions, waist high waves, sometimes bigger…nothing magical. A little bit of colour in the sunrise early, but now we have rain.
On Friday we’ve got some swell coming…
Seeya tomorrow :: u g e
Crispy, clean, sunny, glassy, warm, small and windless all come to mind when describing this morning down at Bondi.
It was SO nice to be down there…as I’ve been chained to the sofa for nearly 6 days as a result of a torn hammy. I can’t stray far from the car with my injury, like an old man with a camera hobbling around…
There was a little wave on this morning, waist to sometimes chest high on a south bank. It looked fun…and uncrowded.
Apple gave a keynote speech to billions of people this morning and what website did they choose to show in their speech – yes – little old Aquabumps.com. Looks like we have friends in the Valley. See
Rain tomorrow, soak up the rays now. : : uge
