Thunders

May, June, July are usually the best months to come to the Mentawais for surfing. It’s when all the winter storms down near the roaring 40s, 50s and 60s kick in, dispersing swell in this direction. I won’t lie, this trip we’ve had a consistent run of 3-5 foot days and beautiful weather – nothing huge. I guess we’ve been spoilt in the past with macking 10-12-foot days – just take a look at my 2017 blog posts…it was massive for the entire 12 days.

Nearly the entire Mentawaian fleet has converged on one break, Thunders. Thunders is a swell magnet and is always overhead high, on a whiff of swell. I just counted 9 boats here (that’s over 100 frothing surfers!)…which means nowhere else is breaking, or hidden from the onshore winds.

Big waves or small waves – it’s a sensational part of the world. So raw, untouched, remote.

I hear there’s been plenty of rain in Sydney – but you have swell!

It’s still overhead high on the slow days.
