Duke of Bronte

I once lived on Bronte Beach in my early twenties. Loved it. Back then, it wasn’t as fancy as it is today. I lived very close to the water’s edge (I could through stones in it from my sunroom). When the swell was big it would keep me awake at night.

It’s a tight bay being only 250 metres wide (a quarter of Bondi) – which is probably why they get the rips from hell A.K.A ‘the Bronte Express’. The north end always has a vicious shorey that sometimes slaps on exposed limestone shelf (be careful). In the south is the instafamous ocean pool – a photographer’s dream as the sun rises.

Today the surf was disappointing at Bronte and Bondi. Plenty of swell just not a lot happening with it. Barely saw anybody get anything decent. Sun is out nonetheless and it’s blowing SSW (kinda offshore/side)

Bronte is named after Admiral Nelson (the Duke of Bronte). I hear he dominated Bunnies Reef on a big south swell.

  1. When people are asked to pick some of the most tragic characters in all of literary and surfing history, chances are pretty good that many will settle on the Brontë sisters. The three siblings who made their mark as authors and surfers— Charlotte, Emily, and Anne — are now well known for their novel surf style , which include beloved classics like “Jane Eyre” cutback Queen and “Bra’s East coast low induced -Wuthering Heights.” Few other 19th century water-women can lay claim to the sort of modern success & ‘air associated’ name recognition now enjoyed by the Brontë sisters.

  2. Sorry Uge, I think all our cliffs and rocks are sandstone, not limestone! Try over the Blue Mountains for limestone (Jenolan Caves et Al)
