Pauline Menczer is one of Bondi’s quiet legends — a world champion who rose from an incredibly tough upbringing to reach the absolute pinnacle of her sport. In 1993, she was crowned Women’s World Surfing Champion, beating the best on the planet. Yet despite the titles, the grit, and the history she made, Pauline walked away with little financial reward and almost no recognition. Her story is one of raw talent, resilience, and sacrifice — and that’s exactly why a statue now stands at South Bondi, overlooking the lineup where we all surf. She’s watching… quietly taking note of every drop-in, right where she learned her craft.
Today, Bondi feels the opposite of heroic. Onshore, grey, and strangely quiet — a sharp contrast to the recent run of magic. Rain’s on the way for the next few days… stay indoors, stay dry.
Two weeks until Christmas.

Yes Pauline is, up to now, a little known legend of Bondi surf culture. I didn’t know much about her until i picked up her book on a community bookshelf which turned out to be a great read: “Surf Like A Woman: Becoming World Champ when women weren’t welcome on the waves”.
Fantastic story in itself, the enormous health and other challenges she had to push through – but also a very unique insight into how ‘different’ surfing Bondi was back in the 80s i.e. rough and ultra local…. Highly recommended!
