Like many of you, we’re still in shock after what happened last Sunday night. We want to let you know that our team and our family are safe — and we’re deeply grateful for the many messages checking in with us. Thank you. I’ve received hundreds of messages from all over the world, and they’ve meant more than I can say.
It’s almost impossible to comprehend how such an act of violence could happen in Bondi — our happy place. A place of sunrises, surfs, smiles, swims, community, and everyday joy. That feeling was shattered on Sunday.
Our hearts break for everyone affected, and especially for our community — particularly the Jewish community — who are hurting deeply. Bondi Beach is built on diversity, kindness, and looking out for one another, and today that feels more important than ever.
This morning, I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know what to do. After 26 (nearly 27) years of photographing Bondi — constantly, daily — I felt reluctant. Hard to explain. I snuck down to the memorial and checked my regular spots. The first thing I saw was two people locked in a huge embrace at Icebergs — it was incredibly moving. I rode a few metres more and another morning local had arms out wide, ready to engulf me. A little further on, someone I didn’t know gave me a cheer and said, “Keep taking photos.” Then I bumped into the Soft Sanders, the regulars, the swimmers — and it felt good to talk, to share, to lift each other’s spirits.
So I reckon it helps to step away from the horrible footage being passed around. Get off the news rabbit hole for a bit. Go down to Bondi and do what you normally do. The beauty is still here at Bondi Beach — and so is the community. A very strong community.
It will make you feel better.
I’ll keep documenting this beautiful place at sunrise.
Especially tomorrow, at 6:30am, when there’s an enormous paddle out planned.
All are welcome. Diversity is our strength.

I just wanted to congratulate you on your comments and photos today.
Such a difficult and distressing time for not only Bondi but for all Australians.
Keep up the great work.
