Muggy Kickoff

Lots of humidity hanging around this morning — that hazy, sticky stuff sitting in the bay thanks to the still conditions. And being Friday, scores of people were drawn down to Bondi for the big kickoff.

I didn’t see a DJ this morning (most Fridays there’s one somewhere), but I’m sure they were lurking behind the wall of humans stacked along the promenade.

The water was busy. Ramp–two–Peak looked surfable but the tide was a bit low at sunrise. A few rare head-high sets rolled through, though mostly it was waist-to-shoulder high.

The water temp dropped a touch too — a degree or two cooler — enough for me to pull on a bit of rubber for the dawn photographic dip.

Looking at the weekend, there’s a bit of rain about. Up north, Newcastle is gearing up for Surfest Newcastle Australia, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — real surf heritage. It all goes down at Merewether Beach from the 9th–15th, with a stack of serious surf talent in town.
