Bawah

There are over 17,000 islands in Indonesia, but only six make up Bawah Reserve. It’s one of those places that makes you wonder why you hadn’t heard of it before.

Just a short seaplane hop from Singapore, you’re suddenly a long way from glass towers and traffic lights. Think gin-clear lagoons, jungle, reef sharks and water so blue it almost looks fake.

The Bawah Reserve resort only opened in 2018. British sailor Tim Hartnoll spent years bringing the project to life, with sustainability driving every decision. No heavy machinery was used during construction. Everything was brought in by boat and built by hand, stone by stone, board by board. Quite an achievement when you see the scale of the place.

It’s described as a tented resort, but don’t let that fool you. These are probably the most luxurious “tents” I’ve ever seen – you could permanently live in them!

There’s not a wave within cooee, but I haven’t thought about surfing once. Every guest gets a complimentary massage each day, which certainly helps. Then there’s snorkelling straight off the jetty, paddleboards, sailing, hiking, diving or just doing absolutely nothing.

Temps – Twenty-nine during the day. Twenty-nine at night. Twenty-nine in the water. Somehow a steady sea breeze has kept it comfortable the whole stay.

Anyway, that’s enough tropical bragging.

We’re off to the Maldives next. Let’s see who wins the blue-water competition.

Cheers,
Uge

  1. I have a place in Borneo, that has all of the good things like Bawah . I paid $15 Aussie for a bamboo chalet on the beach in late 90,s . Now it’s $50 a night . I have bought a place for 50k on the white sands up at the Tip .
Guess either you get sponsored to go , or the gallery is a machine that prints it out for ya . Cool anyway .
