There are more than 1,100 islands scattered across the Maldives, and today we got to hang out on one all by ourselves.
No waves wrapping this tiny speck of sand, just postcard-perfect tropical vibes. Pristine water, not a piece of rubbish in sight, just the four of us, a handful of hermit crabs and an ocean that resembles one giant swimming pool.
Twenty-nine, twenty-nine, twenty-nine. Same as Indo. Twenty-nine in the water, around twenty-nine during the day (give or take a few degrees), and twenty-nine at night. The ocean never gets cold. It’s basically bath water.
Six Senses Laamu is one of the few resorts in the Maldives with a handful of surf breaks nearby. There are two fun beginner waves, Shoulders and Petrols, Jetty C’s has a little more push, but the jewel in the crown is Ying Yangs. It’s an advanced, slabby, slightly unpredictable right-hander that sits exposed to the Indian Ocean and hoovers up plenty of swell.
As I’ve mentioned before, its remoteness keeps the crowds close to zero. Flying around in the seaplane, you realise just how many reefs are out there. Endless reef passes with lefts and rights wrapping around them. It feels like there’s still so much unexplored potential.
At Six Senses I’ve also been seriously impressed with the environmental work they’re doing down here. They leave the seagrass meadows untouched, even though they’re not the postcard turquoise everyone expects, because they’re vital habitat for turtles and countless marine species. Boats aren’t allowed to drop anchor, protecting the fragile coral reefs. There’s no single-use plastic bottles, and they’re also pioneering coral larval restoration to help damaged reefs recover naturally.
