Cable Beach Blues...Broome

Kimberley Colours

The colours found here in the Kimberley are jaw dropping. The water is a hue of blue I’ve not seen before, not even in Fiji or Tahiti. The water is clean, so clean that it’s where the best pearls in the world are farmed. Then there’s the dirt. Red stuff. Rich in minerals and manages to get into everything. The sky is ALWAYS a rich blue. The locals joke that they’ve forgotten what a cloud looks like. I haven’t seen one yet. Not even close.

Here are some more interesting (random) facts of The Kimberley region:

– The Kimberley is 3 times the size of England with only 41,000 people
– Big saltie crocs live here, particularly at river/creek mouths
– You only get stingers when the water is very warm. During our winter it’s fine – you won’t see one
– The last time the surf broke here, it was March and it was pumping (I saw photos today with barrels)
– Japanese soldiers landed here in 1944 during World War II – but conflict didn’t happen as it was just a reconnaissance party
– This week is race week in Broome. Tools down.

  1. If you have the time head up to James Price Point and chat to the protesters and see the area before they build the huge gas hub. Huge shame if they end up building it. Then push on to Cape Leveque, just breathtaking.

  2. Amazing photos I live here in broome and you have captured it very well! But don’t believe about the stingers check out when the last one was!!

  3. Hey Uge,

Check out a great Aussie song from Neil Murray called ‘Good Light in Broome’. As a photographer, I”m sure you’ll agree. Epic pics today, what a place!

  4. After visiting this beautiful part of Australia myself, I can truly appreciate the artistry in capturing the colourful essence of Broome, Thankyou for the memories!
