Biters & Rays

June 17, 2025June 17, 2025

The waves are tiny today — classic ankle biters. But the sun? She’s on full blast. A glorious winter’s morning, even if it kicked off chilly at 8.2°C at 3:30am. Yeah yeah, we hear you Victorians and Tassie crew laughing at us… but hey, that’s cold for Bondi.

About Aquabumps

Since 1999

Eugene Tan (::Uge) started taking photos when he was nine. He’s a self taught tinkerer, a constant experimenter and a relentless documenter who likes to shoot unassisted, mainly at sunrise. If conditions permit you’ll find :: Uge swimming with his camera or dangling out of helicopters, …constantly hunting for new angles on his favourite subjects.

Photography is a way for him to explore his first love, the beach. And since he lives at the beach, that means documenting his home, Bondi. He’s a beach bum. Most of the time he’s either on the beach shooting, digging holes in the sand with his kids or in the line up. And because :: Uge and his family live smack bang in the middle of Bondi, a stone’s throw from his Aquabumps Gallery, you’ll rarely find him further than 300 metres from the shoreline. Close enough to catch those magic Bondi moments when they happen, with his camera, his board or both.

Aquabumps started in 1999 back when the internet was brand new and social media didn’t even have a name. It began as a hobby … a photo a day from the beach emailed to mates. It grew organically. Twenty years later Aquabumps’ photographs are now seen by hundreds of thousands of people, daily.

The best of :: Uge’s work hangs in the Aquabumps Gallery 64 Hall Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 02 9130 7788 Australia. Yes, they can be shipped globally.

The ocean’s still holding a balmy 18.8°C (65.8°F) — not bad at all, actually nicer in than out.

With the shortest day of the year nearly upon us, the sun’s taking its sweet time getting up. There’s a lot of standing around, coffee in hand, waiting for those rays to creep over the hill. But when they do, the beach fills fast — everyone chasing that winter vitamin D hit.

On the topic of good vibes — @mattgriggs former pro surfer and now mental performance coach to the stars, is running one of his legendary Crescent Head retreats from Thursday 30 Oct – Monday 3 Nov 2025. Thankfully, there was barely a breeze this morning, and last night’s squall cleared out to reveal a beauty of a winter’s day.

This Saturday is the winter solstice — the shortest day of the year. Just 9 hours and 56 minutes of light. After that, it’s all gravy. Longer days. Warmer dawns. Eventually.

Our favourite right-hand bank has shifted down a few gears — barely pushing 1–2 foot this morning. Perfect logging conditions, mellow and glassy.

This week’s looking mostly sunny, but cold. Some mornings will dip to 5°C. Chuck on a few layers, grab a coffee, and get yourself down the beach. It’s still Bondi. Still worth it.

We make really big artwork. Like, 225cm x 151cm big.
We call them Megalodons — named after the largest creatures to ever cruise the oceans. They’re bold. They’re epic. And they’ll dominate any wall in the best way possible. Wanna see the beasts? Check out the full online or pop into the gallery....

Frosty Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th — a day wrapped in superstition. Some say it’s cursed. After a wander down the beach, I’d say it is not too cursed — the lineup was empty, and there were some handy three-footers rolling through at Bondi and Bronte. If you’re up for a solo surf, today’s your day. The cold seems to have scared off most of the frothers.

Just past 12pm now, and I can see the onshore winds starting to creep in after a morning of clean offshores. Pretty sure that’ll knock the quality down a notch and bring some junk with it, but you’ll still find the odd corner worth a paddle.

Expect cool and partly cloudy conditions this weekend, with temps ranging from 6°C to 17°C.

Got a blank wall staring back at you? Snap a quick photo and send it our way — we’ll digitally superimpose a few artwork options to show you how they’d look in your space. No pressure, no strings attached — just friendly, expert advice to help you visualise the perfect piece. Call us 02 9130 7788 or email us now, we’re here!

::Tropics to Thermals
The switch from the tropics to polar Sydney mornings was a slap in the face. My phone reckoned 8°C, but those frosty offshores sliced like it was 4 or 5. Didn’t matter if you had the best down jacket on—still cut deep.

Chilly dawns = quiet lineups. Bondi had some decent head-high to overhead sets rolling through. The 8:51am high tide was fattening things up, but now and then you’d score a runner with a lip.

Southerlies will keep the chill factor high, but rain’s holding off until Friday arvo. Good news? Next week’s shaping up sunny and crisp. When I left Sydney a couple of weeks back, it felt like it would never stop raining—glad that soggy spell’s broken.

We’ve filled our annual wave quota in just ten days… time to pack up and head back to the mainland. As far as surf trips go, you couldn’t script better conditions — 4-6 foot more often than not, the odd 2-3 foot lull, and a solid 8-foot finale. Sunshine was abundant, and we scored endless stretches of breathless, glassy winds. After two dud years, this one was a cracker — easily one of the most memorable from 21+ trips.

A lot of people ask if they can surf here. In short — it’s all reef, and sharp at that. During Aussie winter, it can get big. Shoulder seasons are better suited to cruisier shredders, but June, July, and August are reserved for the hungry barrel lords. Like the rest of Indo, the Ments are changing fast…

Regular Aquabumps programming returns this week. I’ve heard whispers that the epic bank at South Bondi is still intact — maybe even a little refined. Not looking forward to swapping 28-degree water for a 3mm steamer, but hey, that’s home.

Sometimes, all the elements just click — and you get one of those days. Lucky for us, it landed smack in the middle of our offshore Indo surf charter.

Zero wind. Four-to-six-foot waves. Sunshine from the first crack of light (rare up here with all the humidity). A diamond day — a proper cracker — the kind you stash in the memory bank and bring up for years. It’s why we haul ourselves across the globe, chasing uncrowded perfection.

The Mentawais are a magnet for south and southwest swells, born from deep Antarctic storms — and before we even boarded, the forecast was lighting up with fat red blobs of promise.

Today? It’s stormy, onshore winds and a day off! Let the sunburn and shoulders heal.

I’m back in the wave-rich archipelago of the Mentawais (MEN-TAH-WHY) — that dreamy chain of islands dangling off Sumatra’s coast. It’s a place I return to year after year, living aboard a boat, drifting between reefs, chasing empty waves, and unplugging from city life. Honestly, it’s one of my favourite places on Earth — I don’t think I’ve clocked up this many trips to any other destination (21 times and counting?).

As far as Indo surf trips go, we’ve kicked off with a cracker run of conditions (hence the radio silence — I’ve been living in the water). After a few average seasons, we finally scored: consistent swell, light winds, and plenty of options lighting up. The opening days have been pumping — 4 to 6 foot, glassy mornings, and long 12–15 second periods.

Yes, it’s true — the Mentawais are busier these days. Everywhere good in Indo is. But it’s still a far cry from downtown Canggu. You’ll meet surfers from every corner of the globe: Brazilians, South Africans, Americans, Argentinians… and yep, loads of Aussies. There are definitely more boats than when I first started making this pilgrimage, but those uncrowded perfection moments? They still happen. Like yesterday — we surfed the most popular wave in the chain, and somehow, had it pretty much to ourselves for a few golden hours.

Stay tuned — we’re on the move.

I’ve still got copies of my book, celebrating 25 years behind the lens. (link in my bio)

When you see me pointing the camera at buildings and doors around Bondi, it’s usually a sign the beach ain’t doing much. Well… correction—there is a lot happening out there, just not the good kind. It’s wild, rogue, and downright moody. Not a single surfer in sight this morning. Not one. Just a few brave swimmers doing their thing in the grey gloom while the sand sat empty—like Bondi ghosted.

Cold and cloudy. Max of 17, min of 14, but the wind made it feel more like 9. You’ll want that extra layer.

Tomorrow looks more promising—those double head-high mutants are expected to calm down into something manageable. Could be decent early if the winds behave.

And yep, it’s that time again—I’m migrating north, chasing warm barrels and boardshort bliss. Don’t worry, you’re coming too (through the lens). Posts might get a little patchy while I’m off-grid, but I’ll keep you fed with palm tree dreams when I can.

Bondi had a fleeting moment of brilliance this morning—a narrow window where it was properly cooking. Before the fresh south groundswell muscled in, two shallow banks served up hollow little drainers, spitting tubes out, with only a handful of honkies.

The new swell is now flowing in, steamrolling the banks and shutting it all down. If you blinked, you missed it.

Chilly start too, yeah? That icy westerly was cutting through at dawn. You know winter’s nearly here when your toes get numb on the sand crossing.

Also—at 2PM today, my drone auction wraps up. I paid six grand. Current bid Two-K. Someone’s gonna score.

P A U L I N E #Paulineinbronze
Bondi Beach is poised to honour one of its most remarkable locals with a proposed bronze statue of Pauline Menczer—the only surfer, male or female, from Bondi to clinch a world title. The ‘Pauline In Bronze’ campaign aims to raise $150,000 to commemorate her legacy at South Bondi, where she honed her skills and broke barriers in the surfing world.

Pauline’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion. Growing up in Bondi, she began surfing at age 12, often as the sole female ‘grommet’ in the lineup. Despite battling rheumatoid arthritis from her teens, she triumphed to become the 1993 Women’s World Surfing Champion. Her story, highlighted in the documentary Girls Can’t Surf, underscores the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated sport and the strides made toward equality.

The proposed statue not only celebrates Pauline’s achievements but also serves as an inspiration for future generations, emphasizing the importance of representation and recognition in sports. With only 6% of Sydney’s statues depicting women, this initiative marks a significant step toward rectifying gender disparities in public monuments.

To support the campaign and contribute to this historic tribute, visit the official GoFundMe page: Pauline’s Legacy Belongs at Bondi. Join @tracksmag & Pauline in Bondi for the ‘Pauline in Bronze’ Bondi community fundraiser at CURLY LEWIS Fri, 13 Jun, 6pm – 11pm

The swell’s backed off a gear — waist to chest high on the sets — after yesterday’s dreamy conditions. You didn’t miss that, did you? Because that was as clean and fun as it gets around here. Could it be? Has the long-standing curse of terrible conditions for the Bondi Boardriders Club finally lifted? Miracles happen… there were actual waves for heats!

A new front is looming, dragging in more howling winds and developing showers later today (1pm it will rain today). For flood-affected areas still drying out, this next punch from Mother Nature could make recovery even trickier.

Bondi’s lineup was sparse this morning — understandably so. The combo of smaller swell and stormy signs doesn’t pull a crowd, especially on a Monday.

Have a great week,

The stubborn low just won’t shove off. It’s still loitering off the coast, like that last punter at a party who won’t take the hint. Winds are onshore again today — a bit lighter than yesterday, but enough to keep things junkie and wild out there. Surf’s overhead, occasionally double, but all over the shop… very few quality waves on offer.

Rain’s been threatening all morning but hasn’t fully unleashed (yet). Don’t let it fool ya — tonight’s looking like a proper showers, with the heaviest falls expected to roll in after dark.

Tomorrow? Soggy 100%. Friday? Still wet, but clearing in the arvo (finally). Saturday? Sunny! I can’t believe I just typed that.

Instead of shooting ugly, onshore Bondi this morning, I’ve dipped into the archives to bring you some juicy summer aerials — a little visual holiday to remind you what the beach looks like when the sun actually shows up.

Hold tight. Better days are coming.

Selling my trusty drone DJI Mavic 3 (original version) – 2 years old, well looked after, flies like a dream. Comes with the incredible RC Pro controller (if you haven’t used this controller, you’re in for a treat – bright screen, smooth AF, game changer). Originally paid $6,300 for the full setup. Yours for $2,500. (DM me, if ya keen, can send you a link)
