About Aquabumps

Since 1999

Eugene Tan (::Uge) started taking photos when he was nine. He’s a self taught tinkerer, a constant experimenter and a relentless documenter who likes to shoot unassisted, mainly at sunrise. If conditions permit you’ll find :: Uge swimming with his camera or dangling out of helicopters, …constantly hunting for new angles on his favourite subjects.

Photography is a way for him to explore his first love, the beach. And since he lives at the beach, that means documenting his home, Bondi. He’s a beach bum. Most of the time he’s either on the beach shooting, digging holes in the sand with his kids or in the line up. And because :: Uge and his family live smack bang in the middle of Bondi, a stone’s throw from his Aquabumps Gallery, you’ll rarely find him further than 300 metres from the shoreline. Close enough to catch those magic Bondi moments when they happen, with his camera, his board or both.

Aquabumps started in 1999 back when the internet was brand new and social media didn’t even have a name. It began as a hobby … a photo a day from the beach emailed to mates. It grew organically. Twenty years later Aquabumps’ photographs are now seen by hundreds of thousands of people, daily.

The best of :: Uge’s work hangs in the Aquabumps Gallery 64 Hall Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 02 9130 7788 Australia. Yes, they can be shipped globally.

The south corner’s still got some energy, with waist-high sets and the occasional bigger pulse. It’s been breaking for days now — the gift (and curse) of these lingering low-pressure systems along the East Coast. They’re bringing the surf… and the soggy skies.

Have a great weekend. Tomorrow’s looking a touch drier.

It’s a bit of a cliché, but Bondi was fully hydrated this morning—rain, rain, and yep, more rain. And it’s not easing up anytime soon. The current weather pattern looks set to linger, with showers and cool temps hanging around for the next few days.

On the bright side? Rain usually means swell. Silver linings, people.
If you’ve been cruising around Bondi lately, you’ve probably clocked Liquid I.V.’s presence. This morning they went big with a full Icebergs takeover—new pool-bottom branding and even a soggy pilates class by the pool. Nothing like lunges in the drizzle…

Fingers crossed the clouds part tomorrow. If not, it’s a good excuse to knuckle down indoors.

After a grey start, Bondi has flipped into a stunning, sunny Autumn day. It’s sitting around 21 degrees at lunchtime—pretty ideal. Heads up, though: there’s a chance of a shower around 4 p.m., so maybe bring the washing in early.

The wave machine has eased off. Just the occasional shoulder-high runner pushing through, but mostly it’s waist-high and mellow. That consistent East swell has finally run out of steam—been a good ride while it lasted.

From Sunday, a new swell’s on the radar. It’s looking big but messy, with strong onshores whipping it into chaos. Not much joy in that—better to wait until it all calms down midweek.

This morning saw a solid sunrise crowd spread from North to South Bondi, soaking up the clean conditions and chasing what little energy was left in the water.

Have a great day! We’re still got our 25 year book, which would be great for your coffee table. Links in bio

The decent run of swell continues, and Bondi was looking the goods at sunrise—clean lines, waist to head high, with the odd freak set throwing a little more grunt.

But while the waves were playing nice, the crowd? Not so much.

It was absolute carnage out there this morning. A weird mix of beginners going over the falls on hollow sections, and intermediates ducking for cover, hoping not to cop a stray board to the ribs. My mate Josh Rich wasn’t so lucky—he reckons he’s broke his arm after someone’s loose stick came flying at him.

It felt less like surfing and more like a game of aquatic dodgeball. Imagine driving down Campbell Parade and someone starts lobbing longboards into traffic at random. That’s the vibe. Dangerous!

I’ve worn it before too—a few years back someone launched a giant mal at my face mid-wave. Ended up putting my front tooth through my bottom lip. Good times.

So yeah—beautiful waves, but sketchy scenes. Might wait for the onshore to kick in… thins the herd a little.

Stay safe out there, and if someone’s on a wave, refrain from paddling.

Grazie! :: uge

Yep, still raining. The skies have forgotten how to do anything else. This week’s forecast? It’s more of the same – wet, grey, and moody. But with these unstable systems comes an upside: swell. And plenty of it. The ocean’s been generous, and we’ve had a decent run of waves. Stormy? Sure. But there’s gold hidden in those rain squalls, and the banks are hanging in there.

In the @Surfaid Cup, our #Aquabumps team raised a whopping $17,000, the highest of all teams! Collectively, we raked in over $70k to support SurfAid’s incredible work in remote communities. That’s impact. Huge thanks to the 163 generous souls who chipped in over $50 and entered our art giveaway.

Drumroll… the winner of the $1500 gallery artwork is… Maritsa Eftimiou! Congrats, Maritsa – we’ll be in touch soon with your new piece. In the surfing front of the Bondi Cup, we held our own and landed a respectable 4th place this year. Some excellent surfing went down in 3-4 foot on Friday.

Plenty of waves out there now if you’re brave enough to face the rain squalls. It was a full house at South around 7am.

Looking out the window now, you’d never guess how magic the morning was. Gloomy, onshore, and junky this arvo—but at 6:30am? Glorious sunshine, silky offshore winds, and two-foot peelers folding neatly into the corner on high tide. Warm water, too. Proper autumn gold.

The southerly’s kicked in hard. It’s 3–4 foot and pretty wild now. Tomorrow’s Surfaid Bondi Cup will likely run in similar onshore conditions—fingers crossed for a few ripable rights.

Massive thanks to everyone who backed our @Surfaid team (The groms including Willie & I). We’re sitting at $16K raised—unreal effort. Final hour to donate is now (2pm deadline). If you’ve got a spare $20 or more, chuck it [link in bio]. That’s the last you’ll hear about fundraising from me for a whole year. Promise.

It’s smaller than yesterday. Actually, it’s way smaller. We’re teetering on lake-like conditions down here at Bondi this morning. But don’t pack away your board just yet—change is coming. A fresh south swell is on the way and should start pulsing around lunchtime tomorrow. We’re talking a leap from ankle-biters to overhead sets by the arvo. Classic Bondi swing.

In the meantime, the sun’s out and doing its thing—warming us up to a balmy 25 degrees. Light NW winds are keeping the surface silky smooth, perfect for a dip, a paddle, or just sitting on the wall soaking it all in.

Now, a quick but important note...

Throw in $50 or more and you’ll go in the draw to win a $1500 artwork of your choice from the Aquabumps Gallery. My boys and I have raised $13,437 so far, chasing that $20k goal. Huge thanks to everyone who's already chipped in—you legends!

We only rattle the tin once a year. This is it. Why do we care? Because @Surfaid supports remote surf communities like Sumba—places we visit often. We’ve seen first-hand the incredible work they do.

So if you dig Aquabumps, love the ocean, and want to teach the next gen that giving back is totally SIGMA—this is your moment.

I’ve not taken photos in the brine for a while, as the conditions haven’t been right. Shooting in the water is my favourite type of photography, even better than dangling out the side of a helicopter. Especially on sublime Autumn mornings, when the water is crystal clear and warm, the sunlight crispy and golden.

The swell may have evaporated, leaving only 1 footers, but it was nice and chilled down there this morning as the crew performed their morning rituals.

The swell will remain tiny for today and tomorrow before some new swell arrives Thursday and Friday (just in time for the Surfaid Bondi Cup). Unfortunately, this new swell is flanked by onshore winds, which will make it a junkie.

Tomorrow is going to be warm, 25. Today only top of 22.
Enjoy!

It was a very picturesque Monday to kick off the week. Colourful hues ignited above Ben Buckler whilst 1-2 footers peeled into the bay from the East.

Yesterday was an incredible Sunday – everywhere was pumping with no wind, plenty of swell and sunshine. Bondi was fantastic, with enormous crowds feasting on 4-5 foot piping rights resembling Queensland points. Great timing, as this Friday’s SurfAid cup is on at South Bondi. (Have you donated to our family team? We’re up to $10.8k of our $20k target)

I’ve recently made the jump to electric, and it feels so good, especially after putting solar on our home. Now I’m charging the car straight from the sun.

The new beastie Kia EV9 is an absolute dream to drive — so smooth, crazy comfy on those long North Coast road trip missions, and with a 500km range, it’s the perfect road trip weapon. Plus, I can load it up with 8–12 surfboards internally… aka the ultimate surf wagon.

More road trips to come, we've covered the North Coast and West Oz South West in an EV9.

Did someone forget to turn off the tap? Oh boy, it’s been wet in New South Wales lately. Trying to polish up these grey, stormy mornings is quite the challenge.

Chilly as well, 25 knots of southerly will do that. Max 18 and low of 14, you’ll feel the coldest you’ve been in quite some time.

Waves? Yeah, 4-5 footers at Bondi, 1 or 2 people out only – which says it all. Surfable, a bit rogue, messy.

Our @SurfAid Bondi Cup Fundraising is going well! THANK YOU. We’ve raised $10k of our $20k budget. To those readers that have generously given – you’re the best – I’ll try to get Spike to wash your car or walk your dog. Anything over $50 bucks and you’ll go into the draw to win a $1250 artwork from my gallery. Fundraising ends in a few days; donations this way (link in bio)

Oh, don’t worry – the rain will return by 2 p.m., but at least you had a dry half-day. The waves were clean as the onshore flow finally dropped. It’s decent, 3-4 foot and well worth a paddle.

Over the years, Aquabumps has helped lots of people. You’d be blown away at the requests. Maybe we’ve found a flatmate on our free noticeboard, I’ve documented your children’s surfing progress for a decade, or I’ve given you a hook-up to an overseas trip for your honeymoon – well, now I need something… we’ve raised $6,000 of our $20,000 target in the annual Surfaid Fundraising, our main charity. We’ve attracted about 100 donations overnight, but we are calling out to that other 200,000 people on here who read my dribble daily…help us help the remote communities where we surf (via Surfaid). Back at it...
------------
Geez, we sure do live in a rainy city. We’ve had weeks of on-and-off rain, hellish onshores, and rogue swell. The Easter Bunny delivered the most spectacular swells, exceeding our expectations and closing many beaches.

I’m back at it in Bondi, starting shooting and posting after two weeks off during the school holidays. The forecast looks bleak, with a week-long rainy spell. Boo!

Warragamba Dam is 95% full – 75 square km of full lake!

Can I get a little help?
------------
Ok, now I need something from all of you. Listen up.
The boys and I are trying to raise $20,000 for Surfaid. Surfaid is our main charity, and we only do one ‘ask for donation’ yearly. This is it. I only have a week to raise the funds as the Bondi Surfaid Cup is next week. So can you help us out, by contributing to our ‘Aquabumps Groms’ team? Pretty please? Any donations over $50AUD will go into the draw to win the artwork of your choice from the Aquabumps Gallery (125cm x 91cm) worth $1250AUD. For real. Thank you in advance – DONATE (the link is in our bio and stories). We’re currently only at $1,000 of the $20k target.

We didn’t exactly nail the timing on a north coast road trip to visit the coastal town of Yamba. Whilst the weather has been tricky and the surf unworkable, it was nice to see Byron’s quieter cousin, a town based on the Clarence River.

Yamba’s got that unpolished charm, a pub with a view, a short main drag close to empty beaches and an unhurried vibe. It’s a really great ‘Aussie’ beach town, popular in the holiday season.

It is surprising to find @ildelfino__ , a tiny 5-room boutique Seaside Inn inspired by Italian timeless styling. If you woke from a deep slumber, you might think you’re in Positano or Capri, for a second.

All the recent cyclone action has also affected the beaches here. Sand seems to be missing on most beaches, the ocean pool shut and constant onshore flow seem to put the junk on the bump. Angourie, a surfing reserve was even suffering a little. Maybe Friday’s enormous new swell will shake things up? Hope so.

Half-asleep and half-hoping for a few little peelers, I rolled down to South Bondaka for a swim in the bathlike conditions. The tide was high, and the waves were fat – but it was a fruitful hour of shooting in golden light.

The shorey was chest high and really the only surfable option, kinda unrideable from out the back. Mid, or mid-low should be appealing.

The swell machine is easing, and it will be tiny by nightfall. I’d still swim, as this time of year is just too good.

With Mother’s Day approaching, I’d suggest gifting her our 25-year anniversary book…and if instructed in your order, I’ll scribble something on the inside cover for ya mum – ’cause she’s the best! Order online (leave special comments e.g. Mums name, etc etc)

The new bank set up seems fickle on the tide, too high and it’s a blob, too low and it’s a quarter of the size. Choose your moments!
