*thirtyThose recent good waves have faded a notch overnight. I went for a swim at lunch and this is what I saw at South Bondi…bright green clear water, sunshine, 1-2 foot waves, crowded and a big fat 30 degrees (how’s work peeps?). Joy beach day…water subtly cooler – but still very inviting. Clouds are starting to crowd the ceiling…a south change will hit tonight with a BANG. So enjoy this good weather before 20-30 knots of southerly hits…hopefully you’ll be able to squeeze a swim in after work if it holds back. Tomrrow the surf looks dismas with howling onshores and temps back around 23 degrees. Have a great day, uge

It’s no secret that Bondi was pretty damn good Bondi last night. Hundreds packed peaks along south Bondi – all 500 metres of it. Shallow bank in the south has been putting on a good show for a couple of weeks now. Well it’s still on today, half the size of last night – but heaps fun. 2-3 foot. Little bit wonky on last night. Unfortunately the good times cease today as the swell drops right back. Shows over for a couple of days until some small waves on the weekend arrive. Stinkin’ hot with 28 due today. Good times in the water – balmy 22 degrees. Enjoy kids::uge

glassWhat began as a grey, humid, glassy morning with few surfers in the water has evolved into a 29 degree, sunny, cracker of a day.
The waves have switched on…quite unpredictable at the moment with a swell increase last night. 3 foot glassy peaks along Bondi at the moment. Good rights in the south end with a couple of combo peaks at middles. Winds will come from the NE later today – so all in all – great time to go surfing (think the swell is now coming from the south with 11 sec period = the goods).
busy weekendBondi (and most of Sydney’s beaches) were the busiest I’ve ever seen them. North Bondi was stacked with people…not a car bay within 2 kms. 3 days of non stop baby oil, big sunnies, shark alarms, helicopters, and beer. Lots of beer. North bondi grassy knoll had drinkers kicking off at 9am. That’s commitment.
Later, ugeWarning: pictures are intentionally blurred. No need to email me about my camera is busted. No light earlier today so messed with the settings.

halfLotta sad faces around Bondi today as yesterday’s joy fades into a distant memory. So many places firing yesterday – hell – fat tubes at Bondi on the corner bank?!#@ Today’s half the size’‘n’half as clean with half as many out. 2 foot weak fat bits broke in the south earlier (8am). Maybe a lower tide would suit – (low tide 5:40pm) but checking my post box at 12:20pm it was barely breaking.
The forecast for the weekend is not so great surfwise. Further decline in swell heights (E), cloudy and rainy tomorrow but nice on Sunday and Monday. But cheer up – its Australia day tomorrow. The one day of the year where you can run around naked sporting the aussie flag and get away with it. Where you can have a sneaky little rave party in the park and not get shut down. The one day where you can play pingpong in the north bondi kiddie pool. Crank the barbie…

Since my neighbour Cakey thinks he’s Corey Worthington and kept me awake all night with his mid-week party – well at least Corey has more than 1 friend – whatever – I was up for the early. Real early. And that ended up being a good thing – see, in the 1st 10 minutes of sunrise, I sat and watched South Bondi spit out 4 tubes on a shallow bank (rare). Tide was just right at around 5:50am and only a hand full out. Waves got up around 4-5 foot on sets, average around 3 foot. Winds backed right off and it’s so super clean today. It was good Bondi. Then as we got closer to the 10:25am high tide, it porked right up into burgers. The show was over. Moral of the story is somewhere would be smokin’ today (SE swell, 10 sec period, 2 knot offshores, 22 degree water, 25 and sunny on land). But with a full moon we’ve got dramatic tides…so timing is important…later::uge

Quite an eventful morning.
BREAKING NEWS: Not only is it 6 foot with larger bomb sets, a dead body has been spotted floating off the south end of Bondi. Unconfirmed reports say it was a surfer, with leg rope and board attached – could have been early morning surfer or last night’s sess. Police choppers, Lifeguards jetskis, Police boats have been searching for the body since 8:20am – nothing found yet…
It’s still big and dangerous. Not a day for beginners. The slight East onshore is creating bumpy closeouts. Not much on offer – maybe stick to the north end of Bondeye – the odd left (2-3 foot). Tomorrow there should be more north in the wind which will clean it up (hopefully). Huge high tide at 9:40am. Barely any room on the beach left…
Can’t believe Heath Ledger has just passed away. Read more. uge

big is not always best The howling southerly winds have subsided this morning, making for surfable conditions early down at Bondi. Swell dramatically increased yesterday afternoon…so now it’s up around 4-6 foot range. So it’s big, quite solid…but it ain’t pretty.
Bondi was very random, bumpy, peaky and not really holding up that great. The ocean still shows signs of recent agitation – so let it settle. Forecast is for 15 knots of southerly later today, so that’s not going to help. The charts show NE winds on Thursday (good)…so until then it could be pretty junky. Massive high tide this morning as well…8:52am at 1.94m. Low tide 3:40pm at 0.18m. Warm water 22, land only scraping 22 as well.
tallowsThe answer to yesterdays question – which beach is this? Its TALLOWS, Bryon Bay. Its was a pumping July day (weekday), 2 guys out hacking it to pieces. Shot it from the lighthouse with a massive lens. Got over 400 emails with answers from all over the place. Guys, if you think this shot is Bronte/Bondi you’ve gotta stay off the crack. That’s a left in the shot… the first 5 people that emailed in have won – we will be contacting you via email.
Have a great day, uge

You don’t have to be too cluey to work out the waves aren’t so great this morning. The overnight south change brought rain, wind and 2 foot slop. Bugger. The good news is that the 30 knots of howl is creating swell. This afternoon it will dramatically increase in size. Tomorrow is still onshore, but Wednesday the winds should swing back to the northerlies. Hang tight. In the mean time, here is 5 photos that keep me going in between sets. Later, uge (yooj)
Free stuff – if you can tell me which beach the 1st shot in today’s post is at – I will flick you a SUMMER FESTIVAL GUIDE 07/08 cd mixed by JEFF DRAKE and THE VANDALS. (got 5 to giveaway) – email us

chewedThe waves are all chewed up from this onshore wind – but at least there are waves around – 3 foot. Only a few guys out catching little froth balls – they don’t look like they’re enjoying themselves a great deal. This onshore should swing tomorrow afternoon. So best wait until it cleans itself up. Showers today max 22, winds: S/SE 13/18 kts tending E/NE 18/23 kts in the afternoon. High tide 5am, low tide 11:45am Water warm 22. Early next week it looks we’re getting some good waves.
six ounce sale Backdoor Benny down at Six Ounce Boardstore is having a big fat sale. Runs for 1 week and starts tomorrow (19 Jan). He’s slashing the prices of ALL boards. So take advantage of his temporary insanity – score yourself a little sneaky bargain. Go to website

howling messAs predicted the violent south change rocked Sydney yesterday around 5pm. It’s quite incredible how it goes from nought to 30 knots in a matter of minutes. From the gallery I saw all matter of objects tumble weeding down the road. This southerly is shredding the 3 foot waves on offer. No one out and I’d suggest doing something else today – wait until Saturday where the winds should kick around to the north again.
jo&ruby Sensational day down the beach yesterday – loving that 30 degrees. Clearest water we’ve had in a while. This is what you would have saw if you went swimming with two local north bondi hussies – Jo & Ruby. Ruby started the new cafe ‘Bru’ on Brighton Boulevard, North Bondi (across the road from the Aquabumps gallery). Try them out next time you’re down the north for a swim.

There is a lot to like about today. It’s a combo of that fat 30 degrees we have forecasted, nice 2-3 foot clean waves at the Bra and a salubrious 22 degree water temp. This pretty picture ain’t gonna last though. Typically after a hot day a sever 30 knot south change will hit (tonight) bringing us back to a wintery day tomorrow (only 22 tomorrow). The moral of the story is get your dose of the beach today. Swell coming…not a big one…not like what’s going on in Hawaii or Tassie, just some decent 3-4 days coming but totally onshore tomorrow…later: uge

The swell came with the storms last night…but so did its buddy the wind. 25 knots of southerly are currently making a mess of things. Its predicted to back off to 15 knots this afternoon and even less tomorrow, so hopefully the 3 footers will clean themselves up in 24hrs. But right now – only 1 guy out at Bondi – and that says it all. Do work. Looks like a cloudy grey week with an average of 3 foot on most days. Shot these pictures a couple of weeks ago on a heavy shorey (when the big northerlies swells we’re on). Attempted to shoot it from the water – still have sand stuck in my eyes from it (and not a single decent shot!) Have a good week::uge

foamies
Well we finish up this week on another 1-2 foot dribbly surf day down at Bondi. Its hardly surfable – but if you were to wrestle a foamie off a small child you would do something like the above. Coolites – Hell I can’t ride those things. Like driving a car without a steering wheel. The good news is that we’ve got some bumps headed in our direction. Sunday they arrive. Monday they really hit and they’re coming from the ENE with a well behaved SSE wind. So lather up the baby oil and head down the beach for a swim seeing it’s going to be a perfect 29 for the next three days. Nuts if you don’t. Swim + come see the aquabumps gallery (10-4 all weekend, 10-5:30 Wed-Friday telephone 9130 8371) or grab yourself a frozen margarita at the Bondi Beach Burrito Company. Have a great weekend. Uge

hotDamn hot. Cook things in your pants hot. Muggy. Damn muggy. Singapore style. Damn no waves either. 1 foot dribbly floppy bits suitable for a 1st timer. I spy a new swell on the 14th Jan (Monday – ENE swell with south winds). In the mean time stay cool. Go swim with the other 30,000 on Bondi beach (like yesterday) – do people work? Later::uge

At first glance of Bondi this morning you would use words like unsurfable, dribbles, learners day, baaah, overcast ankle biters. But wait long enough and a waist to chest high wave will rock into the southern corner allowing one maybe two turns. Its far removed from the weekend’s joy, but if you’re still on holidays you’d find a hint of a weak wave. Especially closer to a lower tide. (Low 4:30pm) Nice day forming – sun poking out now and looking at 24 degrees. The SW winds will kick around to E. Go swim. later: uge
PS – Wal leaves for an overseas sojourn today (for 3 months). So good opportunity to get your wave count up in his absence

fatboysIt appears that last’s weeks persistent east swells have finally faded. We had a good run though… Today it was a dribbly 2 foot…bit bumpy as well. The morning high tide was fattening up anything resembling a wave. Perhaps closer to the 3:45pm low tide you might see a slight improvement – hell the sun will probably shine by then (thick overcast now). These mini swell remnants will continue to fade during the week – good week to focus back on work.
busyBondi is the busiest place on the planet at the moment. Last night’s mugginess pushed thousands of people down the beach for a swim. At 7pm last night I could not believe the crowds (oh and the good light/haze). At sunrise this morning its always a laugh to see the party left overs passed out clean head first into the sand – still can in hand.

tork it up.
Hope you had a good break.
So much tork of good surf lately – well hasn’t 2008 started on the right foot. But my first day in town I only saw 2-3 foot, high tide fatties in the south of Bondi. ENE exposed breaks around the corner had onshore wind issues – but were bigger. So it’s the old chestnut – should’ve been here yesterday. Or even the day before. Saturday was smoking. Hope you sampled a few. High tide 8:20am, low tide 3pm, high 9pm. Water warm 21, Max 25 on land with S/SE winds 10/15 knots this afternoon. Great sunrise this morning.
Have a great week – and year! ::uge

2008Hey Happy New Year!…may 2008 bring you another year of good waves. I don’t normally kick off Aquabumps until the second week of Jan but we’ve got a big NE swell hitting NSW at the moment, generated from a intense low hanging around Queensland. It’s quite spectacular – I hear most Sydney beaches are closed for swimmers. Yesterday seemed to be the peak of it…exposed beaches 8 foot plus. We surfed a beach well out of town, that’s normally a boat ramp and dead flat 364 days a year. Smaller today but something brewing for the weekend…later:uge
