We’re lucky to have some small NE wind chop dribbles this morning. You’ll find the odd waist to chest high wave at exposed beaches – whilst south facing Bondi was throw’n out a couple knee to waist high surfable ones. It’s a weak swell generated from yesterday’s wind. It’s going to be a great day with 23 degrees – time for a dip. Winds are currently NW and will swing NE in the afternoon. High tide 1pm, low tide 6:12am.
Speaking of luck – which one of you guys cleaned out the 16 million dollar lotto yesterday. The 1st division winner is from Bondi…come see me in the gallery if you’ve won – surely you’ll need some artwork for that new mega pad you’re about to buy. What to do with all that dough…100 foot cruiser and weave your wave through Micronesia? Later, uge

I won’t mess around with words cause only one word comes to mind when I ventured over the hill to cop a sneak at Bond*age – crapola. Onshore easterlies are lettin’ rip and the weak remnants of a swell were butchered. So you can totally forget about it. I thought you’d much rather see a few pics from Bali last week…yes its Dreamland…summer isn’t far away…(25 on Fri, 24 on Sat) Friday should have a few waves and sunshine (3 ft)…Saturday – similar if not slightly smaller(2.5ft).
One thing I forgot to mention yesterday is Bronte local, Jessi Miley-Dyer is currently 4th on the women’s world tour. Jessi finished 2nd to Layne Beachley last weekend in Brazil. How good is that – the rookie is gonna blitz.

You’re kiddin right? More chop suey than Golden Century. It’s about as bad as it gets today…shocker howling onshore choppy bits and the rest of the week ain’t lookin’ pretty (1800 travel agent – fiji please…)
Let’s talk about something else – like the fact that our 6 time world champ Layne Beachley won an ASP event in Brazil last Saturday. That’s her 1st win in 18 months and she’s now ranked No.1 on the ladder before West Ozzie Mel Redman Carr. In fact the 4 top girl surfers in the world at the moment are all Australians – how good is that.
Ohhh look at that – you can buy whole albums of music ready for ya ipod off BigPond Music…rock on.
Today’s tip – weather looks good on the weekend. should be 23-24 and sunny. Crank up the Barbie, organise party on your balcony, kick footies, get outta town, lay on the grass or take ya ma out…(no – nothing happening at the A-bumper galleria – you drank us dry two weeks ago). Later, yooj

The Bumps is back on @ Bondiville. Damn its so good over there in Bali. Got me travel agent on speed dial now…
Bit of a pox morning down at Bondi with unrideable short period wind chop. So Fugetabouit… well at least until the afternoon where we should see a swell increase to 3 foot (from 1 foot), but onshore winds will surely make mince of any quality.
Max 19 on land, 19 in water, moderate south winds (tweak of SE). High tide 10:50am, low 4:50pm.

The old fisheye in the tube chestnut. This Bali island paradise turns it up a few notches today. I’m not talking Ku De Ta at 3am or M-Bargo…the promised swell has finally arrived after days of smallness. The peninsula lit up…lines of perfect swells queuing at multiple breaks, biggest was at Ulus 5-6 foot. Not a good day for most euro beginners who I found washed up after bingles with the reef (there are more beginners than Bondi here at the moment). Ulus isn’t as forgiving as North Bondi that’s for sure.

The Rip Curl Padang Padang Comp starts today (waiting period), hopefully some chunks will be sneaking into that corner – the island’s well known pipe and proving ground for the local rippers. Every camera, shredder and his dog will be hitting it if its on.
Today is the last report from this Indonesian pearl. I’ve been staying at the Ghee-ghee mega top of the wozza pad Bali Sentosa villas which officially open in Dec 2006. You really need to check it out – website – doo it doo it.
Seeya back in the Bond*froth. Aquabumps Gallery is open tomorrow. 98 Brighton Boulevard, North Bondi. 10am to 4pm:: uge

Oh yeah. I hear it’s a bit wintery back home. No waves to be found
either. Well it ain’t big up here (Bali for those not on the program),
but she’s warm and surfable with an inbound swell. Made my way up
the peninsula in search of some bukit gold… but got lazy on a
deck chair + umbrella (damn that double6 is an evil joint – lobotomy
required)… snapped some shorey shots for good measure. Max shoulder
high. 2000 euros on a small secluded beach tanning it up…. its
hot…damn hot…enough dribble – back to work. junpa lagi Ketuk

There is something in Nasi Goreng that is addictive. You can eat a fair bit of that stuff…especially when you can feed a family for less than the Harbour bridge toll (beat that maccas). Today the swell is still small up here in paradise. After driving for an hour or so dodging chickens, lost in the rice paddies you’ll come across a black sand volcanic beach with pumping rights (still pumps when it’s small). Yeah you know where I am…she ain’t pretty with dark water and kinda manky beach, but its one of the most beltable waves up here. A frothin’ pack of 13 year old Hawaiians were shredding the joint. These micro dots can pull off airs in 1 foot. What I’d give to be 40 kilos again. (Better cut back on that Nasty Goreng).

Looks like you’ve still got waves back home…Bondi 2-3 foot with a howling offshore perhaps?

Selmat pagi. Yep back in the land of warm water and tubular reefs (I can’t stay away). You’ve all been through here at one point. Bali. A magical place where you can live like king & surf world class pipes. Even with all the current travel warnings, half of Europe has moved in for the August silly season. Everything is chokkas. The beach. The cafes. The Surf.
Currently the swell is tiny. All of the swell magnets are struggling to produce anything over head high. I found a pack of Balinese groms frothin’ on the island’s version of Bondi (I won’t be saying where). These 4 foot high, 40 kilo locals are built to surf – small, agile and hungry to smash any lip that protrudes – They all wanting to be the next Rizal and Made. Every year they just get better and better. They’re not camera shy either, 3 frames into a shooting sess and 10 of them belted down from the warungs to get their teethy mugs captured. They haven’t grasped the concept of dodging a photographer in the water yet – and they think aerials of my head are the funniest thing ever.
And looky that…Bondi seems to have a few waves today. From the maps I’d suspect Bond*age would be around 3 foot, offshore (NW) and pumping (that’s if the banks are back).

Hey kids. It’s all about that summer feeling today. The waves
are non existent but the sun is cooking up a glama day ahead of
us (20 fat ones – feels warmer). Swell is trickling from the NE,
but it’s so small surely you’ve got something else to do –
go swim. Next swell due Monday. I’m outta here and running
off to Bali in search of that indo silky toobage – and you’re
coming too…well through my third glass eye that is…
Say you’re been feeling a little sorry for yourself
this week, perhaps too many Coopers (there you go again) last weekend…contemplating
a detox… Samudra are running those Surf + Yoga
retreats up at Byron Bay again. They’ll feed you only the good stuff
plus show you how to preapre it (Some how I don’t reckon Chicken
Mudflap is on the menu). 3 places left on 1 or 2 week retreats starting

Bit like what the [nice] policeman said to me on Sunday night after our Aquabumps City to Surf drinks had clocked its 8th hour of doof & Coopers…
"you’ve had a good run son…its all over"
Yes. We’ve had a good run…in the surf too. It’s been a minimum of 3 foot for so long now, all the Coopers has run out…not to mention the dj is off shooting greener pastures…huh? – ok, is flat today. All I could see is NE wind chop suitable for beginners. Don’t fret as there is a brand spanka swell kicking on Monday…oh and it’s going to be feisty twenty-4 degrees today, so sayonara winter ’cause it’s swim time::uge
Hang one better chuck in one more "Cooper’s" for good measure. Surely there’s gotta be a welcome summer party.

Today we’ve got a guest surf reporter…fashion frotha and long time Bondi loiterer Damion Fuller (ex kitten). Damion is possibly the most enthusiastic surfer in the southern hemisphere. Just driving around the bays looking at the waves, my windscreen was covered in froth. And the waves aren’t even that good…go that optimism. Read more about Damo
"Riding a 6’1" machined shaped surfboard everyday is like the musical equivalent of listening to Brittany Spears everyday. There is nothing wrong with Brittany but you’ll be a more rounded person if you took in a little Dub Reggae, Twisted Folk and Punk rock. You’ll be a more rounded surfer if you mix up more equipment and today is just the day to do some surfing experimentation. It is a beautiful warm day (top of 21′?) with water temp at 19′. So grab a 70’s single fin, 80’s twinny or 90’s chunky thruster and try some new moves on the many and varied banks we have been blessed with at Bondi today.
At the north end we have some 1"- 2"ft left hand peelers at Mirra Kirra that will only get better with the high tide (3.00pm?). There is at left hand bank in front of the Pavilion that winds into an excellent shorey. Off the same rip there is a right good for mals. The skate ramp left is the favorite of the crowd today that is being fed by a rip that is trying its hardest to re-build the right hand supa bank we had this time 2 years ago. The icebergs left is working and throwing the odd tube as it runs into smugglers cove into front of the barrier reef but be warned is you try and surf this spot as it has a treacherous rip and is jealously guarded by some angry locals, one in particular known as ‘Hawkeye’." Later, Damo

Yeah this is winter kids. How good is today – salubrious.
Our steady south ground swell continues today. You’d find waves
a couple of feet smaller that yesterday, (now 3ft) but its super
enticing with warm water (19+) and sunshine. There’s a catch…this
idyllic dream ends this afternoon as clouds rock into town…bringing
wind & rain (remember that stuff?). Fortunately the bad weather
will fast disappear in time for another fine day tomoz.
Winds are currently light North West (offshore –
bingo). Winds will be South to South east later (onshore –
no bingo). High tide 1pm, low tide 6:30am. 20 degrees on land. No
substantial swells due this week, in fact it will get smaller. So
it may be time to stop flicking between surf sites and crank some
work out.
Nothing beats a good beach shack surrounded by hot
waves. Best check out this little treasure – Susan’s
Beach House
– 100 metres to the beach. Doo it. Doo it.

Dang we’ve had a good run. Everyday it just
gets better. Last week was such a good week for surf and light –
scored some cracker shots. Then I wake up this morning to find a
new south ground swell kicking into the bay. Swell lines banked
up to the horizon. Everyone’s asking me where it’s all
coming from? When’s it gonna stop? I dunno…but if you find
a 50 buck note on the floor, don’t ask where it’s coming
from…just run with it.
Perfect offshore westerly winds currently. Perfect
sunny day – not a cloud to be seen. (max 21). Perfect solid 3-4
foot south swell hitting (and getting bigger). Perfect 4 guys out
– what tha. Not so perfect Bondi sand banks making it close out
(standard) – find a beach with better banks & facing south.
Perfect 19 degrees in the water. Perfect excuse to bail work and
bake it on the highway with a car full of boards….
Think there would be some perfectly sore heads
around town today (Sorry neighbors for the noise). Thanks to all
those crew that helped me out yesterday by drinking half a pellet
of Coopers at the Aquabumps Gallery/nightclub (gotta love that Coopers
– insert next delivery here). The stale grog fumes from the gallery
are killing me as I write this. Have a great week…today is the
pick of the days. Smaller tomoz. Later, uge

There is plenty to go around this morning down at Bondi. The south swell that kicked up yesterday is now in decline mode…but it’s still more than surfable in the 3-4 foot range. Couple of peaks in operation with a large crowd braving the morning chill – must be snowing in dem mountains. Early morning SW offshores followed by SE onshores later today. High tide 9:30am, low tide 3:20pm. Cold day with only 19 degrees.

Sunshine expected all weekend with micro waves. Sunday will be a good day to do the City to Surf with 21 degrees and sunshine (waves will only be 1ft on Sun – so good healthy alternative). If you’re one of the 100,000 that are going to be in Bondi on Sunday, come up to the Aquabumps Gallery for a look (we’re open!)…there could be a few drinks and tunes (Special thanks to Cooper Brewery – South Australia’s greatest contribution to the nation). There is going to be some road blockages, so best walk up Bondi beach towards North Bondi RSL, up the stairs along the side and whalla! The Aquabumps hideout is next door to the old Brown Sugar café. 98 Brighton Blvd North Bondi | View Map |
Those giant tents on the beach at the moment would make for a good Aquabumps Chrissy party. Yeeeeah. Are we there yet? Adios, ugios.

4 things I like (a lot) about today:

I won’t waste words – surf is pumping. 3-4 foot. Clean. Consistent. Good right in the south of Bondi. Good left and right in the middle. Mini tube section off the southern right towards the inside. Bigger tomorrow arvo (like 5 foot) yeoow.
It’s offshore. Love those winter Westerly winds.
Sunrise – talk about a cracker. I rate this morning’s sunrise to be the best of the year so far (insert froth). You might look at the sunrise shot today and go "yeah it’s alright", but the best of today’s sunrise shots are on giant panoramic film 6×17. For 6 months I’ve been shooting on film for my next exhibition – 1st light. If you came up for a chat whilst I was shooting this morning and I was busy fiddling with a vintage pano camera, sorry…kinda gotta focus when you’ve got 5 minutes of joy sunrise to capture and that camera is completely manual.
Soul Riders films are on at North Bondi RSL tonight featuring snow flicks. 7:30pm start. 5 bucks entry. 1st flick ’91 Words for Snow’ then The ‘Process 4’. Dazzla reckons its like the ‘Sprout’ equivalent in snow.

3 things I like about running the Aquabumps website:

You stick in a request for an Aquabumps Bean Counter yesterday and you get 34 emails of interest in less than 24 hours. Are you all accountants out there? Would I get the same response if I asked if anyone has a 200 foot super yacht and wants to sail around the world surfing?
Your mates ring you at 6:15am to scream down the phone about a phenomenal imminent sunrise. Basically ’cause you’ve been whinging about how bad the sunrises have been this year – when it actually ’cause I’m still in the rack.
Mystery packages rock up to my PO box full of goodies. Books. Mags. Music. Clothes. Children’s toys. Wax. Leggies. I love it. More pls. PO Box 3418 Tamarama 2026 NSW

3 random things – just cause.

Local surfer Robin Austin and his wife Vanessa are about to drop their 1st bub. So instead of Robin just dropping in on you every morning, you’ll have to hustle with another frothn’ grom. Please don’t call it Ian.
The Colour Ball "Green with Envy" is on this Saturday night at Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rocks Sydney. Cost $150 a ticket. Cocktail party. Big crew. Proceeds go to help Redkite supporting children and their families through cancer. www.redkite.org.au
If you are doing the City to Surf this weekend, or are just in Bondi on Sun. – the Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 4pm…and you never know, there may be beers and tunes to celebrate the predicted 23 degree sunny Sunday. Come all. Map

The late show. What time is it? Would like to say I’ve been surfing all morning – but no such luck here. It’s been a good day of surfing so far…well thats before the SE onshore came in and bashed the quality out of it. This morning we scored early offshores & clean 5 footers at south exposed beaches – Hey what’s that ? – a tinge of summers bake in the air – gotta be a RDO today…

Today’s shredder is Bronte’s Tom Whitaker who is currently ranked 10th on the world Pro Tour after a 5th at J-bay. The Pros have a couple months off before the next WCT event in Trestles (Sept). Whitaker was out polishing his act for the second half of the tour – which will be hopefully as strong as his first half.
Here are the specifics for detailed people – High tide 7:30pm, low tide 12:45am, Water 18, Land 19 (feels warmer). Tomorrow looks to be a cracker with Westerlie offshores, smaller but probably lining up better and a top of 21 degrees (yeeoow). In fact its going to be fine until next Monday and a cracker 23 on Sunday! Now ya talking – who’s having the barbie?
Aquabumps is looking for a m-yobbo bookkeeper. This massive dynamic company requires a MYOB genius to count the beans. Only talking 1 day a month (if that), I am a spastic with numbers – totally. Pics are more my gig. Help. Contact Us

Those damn southerlies blowing boards off my balcony again. Howling last night. Who would have thought a 5’11" epoxy would survive a 2 storey drop then tumbleweedin’ down the street. Found a couple barbie covers out there amongst the rogue Sulo bins.
Last nights strong winds have kicked up some swell today. Bondi had waves around 4-5 foot but the onshore is making a total mess of it. No one out. Reckon you’ve gotta go northern beaches to get out of this wind (e.g Manly). I managed to sneak in one totally average shot of Bondi today, so I will only bore you with 1…thanks to Ian Stewart of Oceanic Images who shot one of the biggest swells ever to hit Tahiti last month – lighting up one mean mutha of Chopes. Seeing Teahuppo break at 6 foot is enough to keep this tiger in the dinghy cracking Hinanos – but this is just ridiculous.
Have a great week. The winds will ease tomorrow…the ocean will settle…and waves will get better (and some sun pls)…::uge

Dark…wet…flat…onshore = zzzzz. After peering through the curtains at 6:30am, it took a whole 1 second to work out that bed was the only really place to be this morning. So not worth it right now…
The good news is that this low pressure system is bringing a new south swell for next week. Tomorrow bigger (2ft-3ft), Sunday bigger (3ft+), Monday bigger (4ft+)…
Seeing the snooze button got a work out this morning – I’ve been scratchin’ around for some pics for today’s show’n’tell. Today’s pics were shot last summer…on a beltn’ hot 30 degree day…where underwater is the only place to be – how good…summer ain’t far away.
The Aquabumps Gallery is only open Saturday 10am to 4pm this weekend (Closed this Sunday). Address is 98 Brighton Boulevard North Bondi. There’s big stuff and small stuff. Some new stuff. Come see the stuff.

Crispy chilled morning with small knee to shoulder high waves in the southern corner of main paddock, el Bondi. The odd bump walling up into a something worth riding…the crowd factor was up, so you’d need to be keen. You should expect light west to south west winds in the morning becoming variable. Only a slim 17 degrees for the day, but the sun is out before a clear sky. If not a hang down the beach, a lie in the park on the grass would be the goods.
The word on the street is that early next week should be cooking. Work hard now, play hard next week kids::ugios

Flick the car heater on toe digits this morning, ’cause she’s frosty
down our way. Swell has swung dead south, skipping most beaches
and rockin’ into Bondi, Avalon & Curly (and whatever faces south).
No grunt to the chunk – yet surfable at 2-3 foot on two distinct
peaks at Bond*age. W – NW offshores all day as the swell size dissipates.
Not mega frothas, but surfable.

I am continually surprised what people do when they’re not loitering
down the beach in the morning. Take for instance Jono (the mad Professor)
who surfs like a demon pre 7am, then lecturers’ pharmacy at Uni
for the rest of the day. Or how about Gideon, a long haired larrikin
who just happens to be a shoe
manufacturer
/lawyer. Needless to say, I’ve got some
new wheels. Check

Ah. Gotta love that it when the swell comes up a
lot more than anticipated. Bondi was attracting 3 foot with 4 foot
sets. Shape department: poor as the banks struggle to produce anything
of real wackable quality – even on the 6:30am low tide. This new
south swell is a bit of a one hit wonder, probably only hanging
around for today, so come get em’ whilst da hot. Well mildly hot.
Ok, it’s surfable but not going off. Wind: SW, clear skies, chilly
land max 17, cold night tonight – rug up. Adios.
