I’ve made my annual pilgrimage to the Mecca of surfing, Hawaii’s North Shore. I like it here. I hope you do too as the next few weeks of Aquabumps is going to be broadcasted from the rogue shores of this volcanic fiery island.
Upon arrival the surf has been pumping, of course. Not much going on under 6 foot and Pipe is putting on a real good show.
The Volcom Pro will kick off today…so make sure you’re watching the live web cast.
A mate of mine has started a new website called Cuzin. It connects people who want stuff to people that get stuff. Say you wanted a pair of kicks that are only available in the US…and you need ‘em…well, post it on Cuzin and someone will buy and post it to you. Easy! Check it out.

I can remember back in 2005 when a local Bondi Lifeguard rocked up to my gallery and bounced an idea off me. He wanted to create a TV series on Bondi based around the lifeguards. “Yeah…that may work…will people really wanna see what’s happening in Bondi?” I said to Benny. Well 9 fruitful years of trillions of people watching Bondi Rescue has proved the idea to be gold! Ben is passionate about Bondi, lives in Blair St., Lifeguard + ex president of the Board Riders. Today I am handing over the reins for his take on Tamarama this morning…
It is both very impressive and very infuriating to see what good surfers can do in terrible waves. Bondi Boardriders’ best surfers were in the water at Tama this morning, blasting the lumpy backwash filled shore break. They’re in final preparation for the National Teams Titles (Boardriders Battle) this weekend at Cronulla. It’ll be live on Fox, but also live on the beach if you can make it over to Cronulla and support the team!
Today though, you don’t have to be a pro surfer to enjoy the conditions. The water is clear, warm, and just seems to be saying to you: “come and play with me”. Get down there!!!
Later. Benny Davies (guest writer)
The day began with a thick sea fog smothering the beaches. Real humid morning. Plenty of moisture. Very typical of this time of year.
Small waves. 1-2 footers at Bondi, 2-3 footers at Maroubra.
A huge swell has arrived in Hawaii. I just got a swell alert email saying 42-50ft. Gotta love that place…I hope the shack is still there.
This morning did a complete 180.
At 6am you could hear the pitter-pattering of rain on our roof. I hit the snooze button a few times before rolling down to the beach. Upon arrival the clouds parted and it transformed into a nice day. Small waves as well, mainly the 2 foot variety. Bondi is in desperate need for some sand banks. It’s straight az…horrible. It’s an ENE swell so there will be other good options today.
Saturday afternoon is looking fun on the forecast in Sydney.
Eddie says NO GO.
After a very well hyped swell about to hit Hawaii, it’s official – the Eddie will not run tomorrow due to inconsistency and a lack of the minimum 40-foot wave face heights that the event requires for a full eight-hour day of competition, the event will wait this one out…phew…as I am about to fly to Hawaii and would miss it. What about Peʻahi on Maui though – something will crank there, surely. More
Let’s go to the Mentawais.
You all know I love the place. Been 14 times now and booked again for this year in June. You too can travel to the Mentawais and sample the best waves on the planet. Charter boat Tengirri has spots available in early season (now) and throughout the year. Go on, treat yourself. Email the boys if you a single or want a group booking. More Info
For only a few minutes we had strong, golden, contrasty light. It looked amazing. Then the black clouds came over and smothered the beach with darkness. It was like something out of a Armageddon movie.
There are waves but it’s not fantastic. 2-3 footers slapping close to shore with a full morning tide.
After a string of glorious hot beach days we now have the complete opposite. She’s all cooled down now. The fat high pressure system providing hot conditions has blown out to sea revealing a much cooler low that is now sitting over us. Winds are onshore and the surf is a mess. Yesterdays massive crowd has dissipated down to 5…
For most this will be your first day back at work. Welcome back to the keyboards and have a great day!
P.S. have you seen the enormous swell approaching Hawaii? Oh man it’s a gonna be off the scale. The pacific is gonna light up!
If you are under 20 years old and take your surfing seriously you’d be at Maroubra this morning for the kick-off of the Carve Pro Junior and Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage. It will run until Sunday and thankfully today they’ve scored a bit of swell (3ft). Dozens of hyperactive, 30 kg groms paddled out before the event to get a feel for a nice right bank in front of the lifeguard tower. There’s some amazing talent out there!
Have you been to the freshly reno’d Bondi Bowling Club? Cool ain’t it? Didn’t even know it was tucked away there at the back of Bondi. Well, over summer if you go to the bar and buy yourself a 10 buck Aperol spritz you will go into the draw to win an Aquabumps artwork. Bottoms up!
Have a great weekend, ::uge
There was something special about yesterday. The air was clear, the colours popped and the water was incredible. I shot lots. Here is the fruits of a mid-week roam in our ‘hood peak summer.
Oh yeah…there is a little 1-2 foot wave on today from the NE…but it ain’t that flash. I elected to swim.
We are giving away an Aquabumps artwork of your choice (value $2,950). Just go to www.aquabumpslovessummer.com and read all about it!
P.S. Today is similar to yesterday – enjoy!
There’s an unwritten rule…when a north swell is in town…GO NORTH SIDE!
I disobeyed the rule and stuck around Bondi + Tama and found no wave goodness. So there I was in the shallows at Bondi and Tama…skulking…foaming…knowing that NE exposed breaks will be really enjoyable today. e.g. Whaley, Bra, Manly.
The redeeming factor was that it’s an incredible day to be down the beach. So hot so early. Hit the beach people.
The Sydney Surf Film Festival kicks off next week (Jan 20 – Feb 1, 2015). It’s all about art, surf films and surf culture. Check it out
Finally after a long spell of very small waves we have something to ride! Yes, waves.
Bondi is 3 foot, Maroubra was a bit cleaner and I saw some bigger sets.
The Bondi Board Riders won the teams event and 2nd in the overall for the Australian Board Riders Battle on the weekend. Onya boys.
Hereward was a ship that was wrecked on Maroubra Beach in 1898
Swell will pick up tomorrow and come from the NE (should be 4 foot)

Welcome back to many who have returned from holidays. Not a bad week to return to work seeing rain is forecasted for many days of this week.
I was down the beach this morning feeling very uninspired. 1-2 footers, rain, onshore easterlies….boo. Definitely not a beach day.
Luckily I shot quite a bit on the weekend before the storm arrived. Here’s some aerial views from Freshwater to Bondi.
Mahalo :: uge
What a great week to hit the beach…
It’s been perfect – hasn’t it? Sydney really turns it on at this time of year.
To finish this week we finally have some wind swell about. All that wind yesterday stirred up a weak NE swell. 3ft at the Bra, 1-2ft at Bondi.
Could be a thunderstorm later. It is going to be a hot weekend…see you down the beach.
Little baby 1-2 footers are breaking at Bondi right now. It’s an immaculate summer’s beach day…stick the out-of-office on and get down there. Water is 21 degrees.
I’ve had two swims before work…gonna try for 2 more today.
How nice is this time of year?
You can visit the beach twice a day and still have plenty of light up your sleeve.
The beach is packed and everyone is smiling, enjoying the salubrious conditions.
The surf is still tiny but something is brewing…a swell shall arrive this Sunday.
Do you know who The Duke is? Duke Paoa Kahanamoku I’m talking about. Well…he’s the Hawaiian that brought surfing to Australia 100 years ago. So…this weekend is the celebration of 100 years of surfing in Oz…and it’s all going down where The Duke introduced us to the sport – Freshwater Beach, NSW. Go see this website for all the upcoming events this weekend.
Bye for now, :: uge
Well ‘ava a look at that…the morning cloud cover has burnt off and revealed a cracker beach day. It’s really, really nice down there. Barely a ripple to surf but the water temp is spot on.
Bondi is full of tourists and the beach will be rammed, again, today. Party time!
Get ya cosi on, lather up the baby oil. OK, now that was irresponsible. Slip Slop Slap someone.
We are running a contest to win one of our huge framed prints. Go here to our Facebook comp page. At the end of the comp process you have the opportunity to buy one of our books at a very special price.
See you down there…:: uge
