Winter Quiet
It was a tranquil morning down the beach — not many people on the sand, promenade or in the surf. It looks like the cooler temps overnight kept everyone in bed. The skies filled with colour as a thin high cloud did its thing. The swell has dropped out. I saw waist to chest high […]

Morning candy
It may be dark and occasionally rainy, but there was a left-hander worthy of a paddle at sunrise. Emphasis on the ‘was’ part. My 10:35 am surf check reveals the show is all over, for now. The SE swell from yesterday has dissipated. Do some work. KS in Sydney I can remember shooting Kelly Slater surf a Maroubra QS […]

Intermission
At sunrise this morning there was a small gap in the wild storms. I even experienced a moment of sunshine. It was nice and neat, glassy this morning, but since then the SE is blowing, quite strong too. It’s all junked up. Heavy rain is due for the weekend! :: uge

Underside
I reckon you’ve got about one month left of our current salubrious conditions before it shifts. April 7 daylight savings will end, the water will cool down…the humid mornings will have a chilly bite and you’ll have to dust off the wettie. Enjoy the now. It’s so good. Even without waves, a morning swim will […]

Immerse
Get in. Immerse yourself in the ocean, it’s deluxe, it’s 25 degrees! We’ve got tiny waves, they’re surfable around the waist to occasionally chest high freak set. The crowd was big, we’re all enjoying the conditions. Sun was out, finally after an earlier rain squall at sunrise. Nothing significant to discuss on the surf forecast. […]

Rock Hopping
I’m back from The Rock. It was always going to be a quick trip. Love that joint Hawaii, but love it more when the conditions are firing. Can’t score every time. Bondi had waves this morning, some four footers out there. The shallow bank at South Bondi was pounding and heaps of close outs. Not […]

Stimulated
I’ve been shooting a lot in the last 24 hours. Other than pumping waves, everything else was spot on. Sensational weather, warm water, big crowds, amazing sunrises and crystal clear blue water. The beach has been a hive of activity. There’s an east swell in town, small (2ft at the Bra) but the Northerlies were […]

Flipside
Ok, we’re back on regular programming today. The sun is out, the waves have returned, and it’s a sensational beach morning. Two sandbanks were putting out waist to shoulder high waves this morning. We’ve still had dregs from that NE swell, but a new SE swell seems to be filling in, which suits Bondi Beach’s orientation. […]

Sans Sand
A beach without sand (sans sand) is Clovelly Beach! Clovelly is a narrow bay situated North of Coogee. It was actually called Little Coogee until 1913. During The Great Depression, Randwick Council filled it up with concrete to make it more accessible for swimmers – and – provide work for the unemployed in dire economic times. If […]

Anarchy
Firstly, it’s Friday, so yes, I have a little film from Avalon for you all shot on my Google Pixel 2 phone. Watch Secondly, Bondi has waves. Yes, surfable conditions are upon us! (1 to 2 foot) A vast, frothing, wave deprived crowd are all over it as well. Even with those super cold devil […]

Fisheye
For kicks, today I swam out with my first ever lens – the Canon fisheye. I can’t believe I still have it after 20 years. It’s missing a few pieces but still, it works after 100,000s of frames shot and thousands of hours in the ocean. I can remember saving up for 12 months to buy […]

Sync
I was out of sync with the beach this morning. I woke, rode down, it rained on me, I found shelter and java, the rain stopped, I returned to the beach, it rained on me again. I sought refuge in a bus shelter, rain stopped, I went to shoot, it rained on me. Now here I […]

Circular Swim
A really fun morning of waves, but enormous crowds trying to get a piece of the action. Crazy. 5 x unpredictable missiles per wave – very scary! I’m glad I made it out of there alive. Some really close shaves. I spent 90% of my morning swimming against that South Bondi rip, making it hard to […]
