usual suspectsThere’s a group of guys that surf Bondi every morning, religiously. I take my hat off to them. Whether is pouring with rain, horrendously onshore, or sub artic conditions – they’re there wettie’n up. Well, you know when it’s mega flat – ’cause the usual subjects are having a day off. It’s that flat you couldn’t even surf if you wanted to. Beautiful morning though as we enter a special day of 26 degrees. Enjoy. The weekend looks…well…flat also…so the board will stay in their bags for a few more days yet.
pays to proofreadWas only kiddin’ when I said Father’s day was last Sunday (cheap ploy to get you up to the gallery). It’s actually this Sunday. For real. And maybe the old boy would like a little Aquabumps framed print for Father’s day no? Nice weather on Sunday so maybe a Bondi father’s day breakfast – Green’s, Trio, 3 Eggheads (old brown sugar), M Cafe, Sobo are my pick of the bunch. I also gave you the wrong directions to the gallery last weekend. Opps. So all those people up the other end of the street come back! 98 Brighton Boulevard, North Bondi. (Turn right before the bus terminal in North Bondi down that little cu de sac that looks like 1 way but isn’t). Gork at some gallery pics here

clearWhat started out to be a very overcast morning has cleared up to perfection. Surprisingly a small weak 2-3 foot wave was in the southern end of Bondi at sunrise. At lunchtime it had dissipated in half a foot dribbles. But the sun is flooding in and it’s a superb beach day as we cook up to 26 degrees. God Bless Sydney’s winters. Good time for a swim. There is basically no surf for the next week so best occupy your time doing something else…
six ounce saleThis weekend that kreepy Backdoor Benny down at Six Ounce wants to get rid of all its odds and ends, bids and bobs. Now we’re not talking its scaletrix race track, abandoned hair clippers or the spinning rims on the old falcon, more like board boards board…all boards in the store 20% off THIS WEEKEND ONLY. Rubber – 30 big ones off as well. Go to his website for the deets – www.sixounceboardstore.com.au

spent. In stark contrast to yesterday’s day of pumping 4 foot NE swells, we’re left with onshore junk at 1-2 foot this morning. It’s all over. Barely surfable with an early wind. Still warm weather (24) as that massive high hovers above us. How good was yesterday. 27 degrees! It’s only been that hot this time of year twice in a century. Sorry folks, but the surf forecast is looking really bad for the next week. 1-2 foot…good week to dart off to Indo/Fiji/Tahiti/Samoa…No, I am not going, don’t worry.

blood moonDayz like theze just make you just make you want to throw in the day job and spend the whole day down the beach. It’s perfectly sunny. Warm too. Fat 27 degrees. Oh and there’s waves. No lie. A consistent east swell is tickling our coastline with 3 footers. To top if off, there’s perfect grooming NW winds. The only indication of winter is the 18 degree water – but as I peer over that North Bondi hand rail near my gallery, I see hundreds of bods strewn along Bondi, soaking up the winter’s sun. Must be hard sitting in that cubicle in the shitty knowing we’ve got the best day (ever) outside. Well weather-wise. The surf is on the decline, tomorrow 2 foot, Thursday 1 foot, Friday flat. Full tides early in the morning making it fat as.
Tonight we have a freak lunar eclipse over Sydney. Basically at 6:50pm the earth’s shadow will block light from the sun to the moon – creating a red moon (Blood moon). Apparently Bondi is one of the best vantage points to view this and it’s rarely visible from our part of the world. So pick up a sixer, a rug, some hurricane ribs, oh don’t forget the girlie and sit on the hill at Bondi to watch our interplanetary show unfold.
morrocoEveryone talks about the waves in Morroco but I’ve never been (on the list). Now the healthy little frotha’s at SAMUDRA are running Yoga and Surf camps up that way. Time for a health kick? www.samudra.com.au

twenty-fiver
Yesterday’s decent east swell has dissipated over night leaving 1-2ish footers down at Bondi this morning. A more east exposed beach may have an extra foot slapped on that, but is small and clean – seriously lacking power – suggest Mal riders or beginners only. The good news is that we’re spoilt with a sunny, 25 degree spring-like day…bang in the middle of winter. Yeah that’s right. In fact tomorrow same same, so start working on your excuse to take a day off and enjoy our summer flashback.
500 girls in bikinis on Bondi (world record attempt)
Thought that would get your attention. No, not some MSG induced wild dream. Yep, the world’s biggest swimsuit shoot will be held on the 26 September 2007, between 10am – Noon (in front of the North Bondi SLSC). Put that one in the diary. Cosmo and Venus Breeze are planning to get over 500 girls in bikinis, breaking a Guinness world record…all in the name of 30 days of Fashion and Beauty in September. They’re looking for girls to participate, register here and yes…there will be shots on Aquabumps kids.

cleanMuch cleaner waves today, but still lacking punch as the south end dribbles at 3 foot. Wave period is quite short, 6 seconds, meaning wind waves. It’s offshore though…I got a couple of snaps before the rain chased me out.
sundeeWaves will improve on the weekend with an ENE swell coming. Saturday afternoon should get better from 4pm, and Sunday looks good with early morning offshoresand 3-4 foot (but go to a east exposed beach honkies – not south facing Bondi)
galleriaThe Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend. Any purchases over $150 and we’ll throw in a free trip to Mentawais for you and 6 of your mates (oh and 3 finalists from Miss Bondi will feed you grapes post Maccas sesh). Na. Just kiddin’ – just wanted to get your attention. But come down anyway 10am to 4pm, Saturday or Sunday, 98 Brighton Boulevard . Directions: go to that big beach called Bondi, walk north along the promenade (north is the side the sun rises on); in the northern corner take the stairs along side of the North Bondi Italian, fang left and whalla! Don’t forget it’s Father’s Day on Sunday and maybe a framed photo will hit the spot…or breakky at 3 Eggheads next door to the gallery on Sundee.

same.same.Well… it’s about the best surf day of the week so far… and it really ain’t that great. One of the worst weeks for surfing we’ve had in such a long time. The junkie 3 footers were hindered by an onshore easterly breeze (10 knots). A few guys were out trying to reach their minimum weekly wave quota. You’d have to be very keen, or trying to burn off those winter muffin tops.
You’re probably wondering…if the surf is that bad today, why is lil’ Perth puntin’ for the high heavens in Pic 1, well, good question. I guess if you were 50 kilos and surfed 5 hours a day, everyday, you would be flying high right next to him. Um maybe not…that’s a big air kids. Lighter winds tomorrow, a chance it may clean up…
BVThe Brad Valenti memorial surf comp is on this Saturday 25th August starting at 7am. If you’re keen to surf in the comp download an entry form from www.bondiboardriders.com or from Krack Ssurf and Skate. Otherwise come down to watch the best of the local crew rip it up. Booze up at Wavellery bowls afterwards, 6:30pm Sat.

archival goldI’m gonna run out of archive glory should this onshore smashup persist. Bondi was a skanky… The 25 knots of sou-easterly butchery continues, but the swell looks to be growing in size (hard to tell really, it’s a blur of whitecaps). So um, not much else to write about really. Still onshore for a couple more days, winds swinging more around to the east which will infect most bay angles of Sydney. Twiddle the pen, lick stamps, send friends time wasting emails, get creepy on facebook, search for new surf breaks on google earth or kick that tin can down the street.
Today’s shots are courtesy of the clearest water I’ve ever seen in Australia . Yep, its in NSW, and I thought WA gets clear, these babies are crystal and this is what you see when you spent he afternoon on the bottom of the ocean. (no scuba). Click here to check pic 1 out large.

bondi junkiesWaves have gone from messy to shabby onshore junk. It’s barely surfable – so just fuggedaboutit. At least there is some sunshine. Talking of junkies, let’s talk about the Astra Hotel, a heritage listed building in Bondi…yeah that big mustard coloured, 6 storey slab of concrete above Motion and Bondi Tratt. It’s been around since the 1915s, best views in town as shared by the Packers only doors up the road. Did you know that it was notorious place to buy illegal late-night liquor and heroin? Also legend has it that a patron was beaten to death with pool ques at an AC/DC concert there. Well you can now buy one of those little rooms with a view for only $330k, but you must be over 55 years old as it’s a retirement village now. Maybe we’ll put it in your name Jamie. Enough history lessons. Swell comes up tonight but the nemesis onshores persist. Wait till it calms ::uge

the inside waveJust peeping out that window for one second you can work out that it’s totally onshore, wet, and ugly. 3 foot wind-butchered dribbles plague Bondi. Definitely a day to get heaps of work done. Swell gets a bit bigger tomorrow, just needs those winds to back off otherwise it will remain junkie.
Today’s shots are from a recent Mentawai Island trip where we scored optimal underwater shooting conditions; crystal clear water, a shallow sucking reef with a hot little tube and perfect angle of sunlight. So check out the mechanics of a wave from below ::uge

fresh serveThere’s plenty to go around this morning. A solid ESE swell with 10.5 second gaps is feeding Sydney with the goods. Flanked with an optimal NW offshore breeze you should really stop reading boring email and head somewhere with a few decent banks. Bondi was around 4-5 foot; BUT we’re not blessed by the shape Gods today…most waves closing out straight OR a few nice face bumps that’ll surely buck you off.
The swell peaks at 10am today, then enters decline mode. Tomorrow will be smaller around 3 foot and SW winds (south change tonight). Still surfable all weekend, just nothing special. Great weather today – max 22. 19 tomorrow and partly cloudy.
bondi iceNo, we’re not talking crystal meth, rather the North Bondi Surf Club party being held on 25th August at 7pm. Entry 20 bucks, please RSVP [email protected]. All for a good cause – proceeds going to the Morgan Mellish Memorial Fund. (AFR journalist which fell victim to the Garuda Plane Crash disaster this year).
aquabumps galleryThat little 25 square metres of pictorial heaven is open all weekend 10am to 4pm. dead bodyThe talk on the beach this morning was the dead body that washed into Bondi’s south corner last night at 2:30 a.m. Police were scouring the sand this morning looking for any clues. The word on the street (not official) is that it was a 30 year old Asian female in her pajamas. She’d been in the water for a couple of hours before being found. At 7:45am today I saw the police discovering her clothes near the south end ramp. And that’s about all we know…
Back to the surf… There are waves today – bumpy as hell though. Our gem southern end bank is still producing rideable left and rights – but it’s far from smokin’. Winds currently NW and will swing NE later today blowing 15-20 knots. If you ask me, tomorrow is your day. I’d expect 3-4 foot, ESE swell direction (not suited to Bondi), northerly winds, and a nice big fat 10.6 second period…so you should see a power increase. Best crank out the work now, stop checking the share portfolio online – yeah yeah I know, losing money hand over fist…later, uge

wobblyOvernight the swell has jacked up. Waves are hittin’ the 3-4 foot heavens, so it’s def worth getting into that little rubber 2nd skin n’ tip toeing over the icy sand for a bash. Lots of wobble in those bumps this morning, legacy of yesterday’s onshore agitation. The odd one rocks in, and breaks quite tasty, many fold into closeout disappointment (std). Offshore this morning (SW), NE later today. Brass monkey cold water…like 17. Swell size should maintain through to tomorrow morning – then drop. So, let’s hope that these afternoon NE winds cleans it up a heap ::uge

pilesPost Bali trip, I was quite surprised to see that little pile of sand in the southern end hanging in there. The lil’ swell magnet bank continues to break, even in this small southerly wind swell. With a wave period of 7 you can’t expect much power, but it looked like 2-3 foot of fun this morning. Currently offshore winds, onshore SE later today. Swell will kick around to the SE tomorrow, and should maintain size if not a little bigger. Enjoy.
h5N1Always good to return from a trip in Bali and discover that bird flu has made its way to the island of the Gods. An Indonesian lady and her child died yesterday from the deadly Flu strain H5N1.

bond*ageI know what you’re thinking… It’s been a while since one of these little Aquabumps puppies hijacked your inbox. What the hell is going on? In summary, was in Bali last week for a decent swell (and to do nothing). The Island of the Gods turned up the heat last Tuesday / Wednesday – Ulus 8-10 foot, Padang Padang 6 foot.
So why no reports from Bali? Well many reasons: a)my 17inch lappie drowned in a flat white b)its party season up there – Europe has moved in c)there was an earthquake (apparently that stopped all internet connections – apparently). I even got told that mobile phones don’t work in Bali when it’s cloudy. Go figure. Those little fellas make me laugh sometimes. Anything that went wrong with anything last week – it’s the earthquake. Small waves? – blame it on the earthquake. Wrighty’s bad hair do? – the earthquake…
So now we’re back in Bondi… A very choppy weak wind swell is only managing 1-2 foot. The southerlies are into it…10 knots, but it’s a great day, feels a lot warmer than the forecasted 17 degrees. The next 4 days look sub-standard in the surf department. Hopefully the new swell towards the end of the week will bring relief. Adios, uge

deckchairYou’ll probably open this email and roll the eyes thinking that punk is on the run again, back to Indonesia. Yep, my plan to avoid the claws of a cold Sydney winter is coming to fruition. Hey it’s only for a few days, so relax and enjoy some equatorial sunshine in your day.
Like Oz, Indonesia is having a year of great waves. The Mentawais has flicked back to its consistent self, recovering from 2006, the year of insistent onshore duds. Bali is sharing the same fortune this year, with tales of epic sessions all over this little island gem.
Well, there probably were a few waves up at Ulu yesterday (3ft)…but if it wasn’t within 1 metre of my Dreamland deck chair I was incapable of photographing it. Must have been some baaaad chicken, or perhaps Ku De Ta’s 7th birthday celebrated in a rave style hedonistic smashup. Anyone seen my credit card? Enough said. Junpa lagi, uge

blacksun
Its one of those mornings that you think the sun is just not going to shine. Damn hard to get out of bed when its this dark. Thick cloud blankets Sydney as an imminent south change lingers off our coastline.
Would you believe this micro ESE swell is continuing to provide fun waves down at Bondi breaking around 2 foot, yep, it’s surfable – far from cranking. Good bank. The long wave period (10.3 seconds to be exact) is creating long flat spells in between sets, every 10 minutes a wave does wobble on in. A new swell will start tomorrow afternoon. Sunday should reach 3 foot and Monday it peaks with 4-5 footers (swell origin starts off from the ESE then swings to dead south). Great weather all weekend but cool. Good opportunity to come see the Aquabumps Gallery 10am to 4pm (c’mon had to throw that in). 98 Brighton Boulevard North Bondi.
Seeing it was pitch black this morning, and my shots look very ordinary, I thought I’d show you some pics of solid days in Sydney. Seeing we’ve had quite a few this year. Adios, I’ve got a plane to catch ::uge

calmNice warm day for the middle of winter (max 23 today). Loads of people down the beach this morning taking advantage of the calm conditions. Waves broke around 2-3 foot (se swell), wind was pretty much non-existent and there was quite a few crew scrambling for whatever was available. It looked pretty weak, and fat in sections, but a bit of fun. Swell will drop even more tomorrow, but it should come back on Sunday. Monday looking solid again…

::muddychainsawThat subject line has absolutely no relevance to the surf today. I got it from one of those random sp**am emails that try and sell you toolkit enhancements (1 of 100 a day). I just thought it was a funny one. Who thinks up that stuff? Some pimply face hacker in the backyards of the US is having a good ole time making up subject lines.

Enough ramble – surf is looking might fine this morning. It’s cleaned up a whole heap overnight and there are 3 footers at south facing Bondi this morning. The word is out as the packed lineup fought for their little piece of aqua joy. It’s sunny too, as it attempts to reach a deluxe 22 degrees today. Northerly winds all day – very inviting. The swell is on the fade. Will halve tomorrow, then halve again Friday. Perhaps a new swell on Saturday.
Local announcement: The BRAT (Bondi Running And Triathlon) Club host a free running group every Wednesday night at 6.30pm leaving from the south end of Bondi beach. Runs are around one hour at a group pace. See www.bratclub.com.au for details. All are welcome.
Have a great day, ::uge
