Tricky

If you rocked up at the beach in between sets you would have gone ‘Not much happening today…dropped off a lot…’
Don’t be fooled. Out of the blue…literally…a 5-6 foot set will blast through every 15-20 minutes. Really long period south swell. Mega long lulls…be patient. I’m quite surprised we still have swell to be honest. This south swell just keeps on giving.
Yet another amazing surf day. Go surf.

Supply

Well there’s no shortage of swell this week. It’s fully stocked. Today’s quite big, just like yesterday. 4ft.
Bondi was struggling, a lot of close outs.
Oh boy, hit the road…and you’ll score for sure.

Glass Half Full

On my morning wanderings I talk to all kinds of people. Some people are just getting home from the night before, some are up early embracing the day.
This morning another touring photographer came up for a chat…his opener “Heard Bondi was good to shoot at sunrise…not much happening today aye…Gold Coast is so much better…been there?”
I thought to myself…gee you’ve picked the wrong guy. I mean…I’ve dedicated most of my adult life to the early morning light of Bondi.
I responded “Yeah its crap here…” as I looked out over Bondi and watched an array of clean 6 foot sets marching in.
Not a bad place to be today…Sydney. It’s pumping.

Twilight Hues

Oh mother nature, you did it again! At 6:30am the skies lit up…just for that short moment. Intense reds and pinks painted the skies as waves broke in the head high range. It’s was one of those morning, floating in the ocean, marveling over how good we’ve got it. Autumn sure does bring out the good times.
Tomorrow looks bigger.
If you really want to see what the beach was like this morning, check out the footage from my good friend Paul Borrud’s  drone. He flies his bird for his charity, Dronation. Check out this film, BONDI BEACH THIS MORNING FROM THE AIR.

Salty

Yo Beach Lovers,
T’was a little bit too rainy and risky to swan around with 20 gees worth of camera gear this morning…my insurance company loves me for it. Here’s some images from last summer.
There are waves, 2-3 footers and looked kinda clean, early. 32 knots of southerly now though. Yeah, 32 knots…that’s bloody windy.
Understandably the swell will steeply increase overnight with all this wind. It’s just a junkyard though. Bondi is a sea of white foam. Foam party!
Grab a cuppa…and hit the netflix (or make a crust).
Did you know you can buy any photograph ever seen on Aquabumps, Aquabumps insty or Facebook? That’s about 10 million images to choose from. If you visit the Aquabumps Gallery you can see the most current and my favorites…in frames…and looking all pretty. Our gallery is at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach Telephone 02 9130 7788. It’s a old mechanics yard that we converted into a white 40 metre box. Come see.

Empty

Right now the beach is all calm and chilled. A small pulse at sunrise had some fun ones, but now it’s back to a dribbly 1 foot. After a cloudy start the sun is out now and putting on some warmth.
Really nice day. REALLY nice day.
SURFAID is in partnership with Spotify. It’s called Surfify. Basically they’ve put together an album inspired by the ocean that every time you listen SURFAID gets a donation. Watch this to see how it works.
I have a friend, Paul. He’s quite an exceptional human. He has a drone. At first news of the earthquake in Nepal, Paul jumped on a flight to the crisis area – just to see if he can help.  He’s that kind of guy. Paul and is drone have raised $50k for Nepal. It’s called Dronation. Help Paul Help Nepal. Donate here. He’s about to fly back to Nepal to make sure all donations go right to the people that need it. Onya Paul. Check out his drone footage of the damage while you’re on his site.

Doozy

This morning was a doozy…
The colours were like neon lights over Ben Buckler.
Well…that made up for yesterday’s blunder.
I will let the pictures do the talking.
Waves, small. 1-2 foot. Swell coming on the weekend.

Good Morning

OK, I’ll ‘fess up. I slept in. Yes, very rare for me. Unfortunately it was a colour blast at sunrise…which I only caught the tail end of.
I am still slapping myself as I write this [email protected]#!$#%&^#@.
Small waves trickling into South Bondi. A nice left forming. 1-2 footers. Very clean conditions.
How about our resident giant Sting Ray based at South Bondi? It’s about the size of a car bonnet and loves messing with you. Years ago the same one chased me to the beach.
Enjoy your day :: uge

Smudge

Gettin’ all arty today. Get your berets on.
Good waves, 3ft, very dark with plenty of cloud cover.
The water is still warm. Very warm for this time of year.
The Brazilian dominance continues on the world surfing league. Did you see Filipe Toledo destroy Bede on his home turf? Next level surfing. You must watch these final highlights. Insane.

Boomtown

The south swell is booming and you can see waves breaking around 6-8 foot. Bondi was maxed, washing through from out the back. Protected South Maroubra had a few – nothing special. Somewhere on the deep south coast would be blowing minds right now. That is before the winds swing more cross-onshore.
The weekend has waves throughout…but the winds will mostly be onshore. Big junkie Bondi can be fun sometimes.
Traditionally…watching airline safety videos is about as exciting as watching paint dry. If you’ve ever flown on Air New Zealand you’d know they have a good laugh with their inflight videos. Well…Air New Zealand has launched their latest safety video feature the biggest names in surfing…Mick Fanning, Gabriel Medina, Laird Hamilton, Alana Blanchard, Ricardo Christie to name a few. Watch Now As a bonus you can also see behind the scenes during the making of the film with Mick right here.
Later this year we will be making our annual trip to New Zealand. Love that place. Stay tuned.

Hello

Well…HELLO swell! Oh boy there’s some fine looking waves today. Real pretty ones.
The winds are offshore and grooming nicely. The swell is from the South and waves breaking @ 3ft.
Once again the sun is out but it’s chilly in the shade. Rubber up.
These are the dayz…

Intermission

Yesterday’s 3 footers dropped shortly after I shot them. It’s been tiny since. Fortunately at 1:18pm today a new swell will file in. Okay, maybe 1:19pm.
For the rest of the week there is plenty. Pretty chilly – break out the steamer.
Lots of people ask me why I love Hawaii and spend so much time there. Well, watch this and you’ll see.

Rebound

Well…the swell has bounced back from flat to 3 foot overnight – and everyone is into it! All manner of craft took to the water and scrapped for a wave. It was crazy this morning. See what happens when we’re deprived of waves for a few days?
Today’s another amazing day. Sun, warm, waves – all that. ‘Tis gonna change tomorrow with possibly some rain. Looks like the storm will bring some swell.

Global

A lot of people read Aquabumps from overseas. I’d guess about a third of my 50,000 daily readers are abroad. Probably a lot of expat Aussies missing home. I know if I was sitting in a cubicle in London, looking at these pics would trigger a unconscious twitch. Hey…I once sat in a cubicle…for 10 years…dreaming of being down the beach too. In fact that was one of my main motivations to start Aquabumps – bring the beach to those that can’t get down there. That was 16 years ago!
I digress.
My point is that it’s a beautiful, crisp, Autumn (waveless) morning at Bondi. It’s the type of golden morning that I’d miss if I was overseas. Scroll down…and smell the brine.

Bingo…another cracker. That’s 4 in a row. Sunshine is plentiful, waves are starting to kick in and there is some tasty lefts rolling into Bondi.
The winds are offshore (and cold).

Lube

Our run of exquisite weather continues. A lil’ on the frosty side before the sun came up – but the water remains warm.
The surf is tiny, 1-2 foot, dribbling in on a south bank at Bondi. Nothing to rush down for.
Saturday looks super fun. 4 foot (south swell) with crisp westerly offshores. Head out of town – f’sure.
Quiksilver Japan have released a new wetsuit that actually is a wet  – suit. So if you want to get dressed up in the surf or make the transition from surf to desk faster, watch this.

North

Sydney has so many beautiful beaches and I haven’t seen ’em all. I’m making it my mission to get around to as many possible in my morning meanderings.
Today I visited Mona Vale. Never been there before. Nice ocean pool…love how it’s poking out into the ocean like that. Love to see it at high tide.
What a day. Another cracker – just a lot cooler. Max 20 today but not a damn cloud in the sky! Swell has gone all small…1-2 foot and still from the ENE. Quite strong offshore wind blowing the curls this morning. Very invigorating.
Watch this short to get you pumped about the coming ski season.

Mantown

Well…well…well. What a day. 26 degrees and aren’t we all just lovin’ it. After being trapped indoors for weeks you are now set free to roam. Not a cloud in the sky and the water is still warm.
I found myself fumbling around Manly this morning. Yes, I crossed the bridge! Manly loves the ENE swell and was looking really good this morning…that is…before the wind screwed it up. I saw some really decent righthanders at North Steyne and one hell of a big crowd.
Put the out of office on, grab a board and a friend…go for a drive. It’s a cracker.

Darko

It was a grey, dark morning (which we are becoming very accustomed too recently). Fortunately there was a ENE swell running with some punch and south winds. Fun waves around today (and yesterday). It’s dropped a lot overnight, but still surfable.
The great news is – THE REST OF THE WEEK IS PERFECTLY SUNNY!
How do you like them apples? Good fun head waves all week long to match.
No light or colour in today’s photos so I went mad with experimental filters.

Achromatic

Not a pretty sight down the beach. Onshore, 1-2 footers and pouring rain. You definitely are not missing anything down there.
Let’s go back to better times…like Hawaii 8 weeks ago. It’s nice there. Here is some shots you haven’t seen from my recent trip.
Heli400 – The Westpac chopper crews are paddling ski’s from Bega to Bondi (370kms) to raise money for the heli rescue service (which badly needs funds). They will be arriving into Bondi around 12:30pm on Sunday 3rd May after 9 days of grueling paddling (and sometimes riding if the weather is no good). Show them you’re support – you never know, one day you just might need to be rescued by the heli boys out of the ocean…more
