Served Chilled

I was quite surprised to see a small, clean swell still chuggin’ into the bay at day break. I suspect it will fade quickly though as the swell charts show a rapid decline in energy around lunchtime. There’s a nice (small) left in the corner with barely anyone out….1-2 foot. I’d say the extremely cold weather will keep most people tucked up under the quilts.
The Weather Channel are calling it the coldest June morning in 61 years as the mercury dropped to 4 degrees at 6am. (-5 at Richmond!). The run across the sand is painful.
The good news is that a swell will be arriving Friday afternoon and it’s looking really good on the weekend.
Apparently the ‘dozer is making space for a Ice Skating rink on the beach as a part of the Bondi Winter Festival.

You’d think after sending daily emails for 11 years we’d have a better handle on it…nope. You may receive two daily emails today, a colourful Lizard Island escape that was intended for yesterday and now you’ve got our back to Bondi edition. Ah yes, a well oiled machine here at Aquabumps. I even lost a 16 gig card between the beach and the office which had all my sunrise landscape shots on it, hence only surfing images today.
I’ve only been away for a few days but it seems like a lot has been going on back home. We’ve got a NEW south swell (fun 2-3 footers), a NEW female Prime minster, a NEW ice cold WSW wind (straight off the snowy peaks) and NEW bull dozer, hacking apart the natural sand formations on Bondi beach.
Good day for a fun, small wave if you can brave the cold (low crowds). Only 4.7 degrees this morning – that’s the coldest June day in 27 years. Forget surfing tomorrow – flat.
I will try and be more organised, and you’ll only get 1 edition of the Bumps tomorrow – word.

P.S. It’s the end of financial year tomorrow – maybe come into the gallery and buy that office some badly needed artwork! t:9130 7788 or 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach

The Reef

Hiya, today we have a guest writer (someone who actually writes for a living)…a guy called Moose, who you’ll find down at the ‘Bergs every morning before sunrise punching out laps. Not sure if he’s actually writing about me (it ain’t this glossy) or his own life :
It’s easy as an Aquabumps subscriber to think Uge’s life is idyllic in every possible way. Well as a subscriber and someone who has just seen him at work for 5 days I can assure you that is absolutely not the case. While on Lizard Island Uge was faced with many highly stressful situations, like helping his model change into three different (but all skimpy) swimsuits, deciding which helicopter to take for a spin around the Reef or which deserted beach to shoot at on. It never stops…in the evening he has to decide which vintage wine to have and whether to have the flambé Moreton Bay bugs or the Wagyu. Add to that the mental stress of dealing with the guilt he must feel for being paid to do all this and I’m sure you’ll agree he is just an everyday working class man like the rest of desk jockey losers.
By the way, you can get a great deal on Lizard Island ( a free night) for being an Aquabumps subscriber. There’s a few conditions so you can call them on 1 300 233 432 or email [email protected] and quote the cryptic codeword ‘Aquabumps’ for more info.

Lizard Island

Hi there. Sorry about the late Friday report and the lack of updates this week. If you’re 1 of our 11,000 Facebook crew you’d know we’re up in the warmer temperatures of Lizard Island for a few days. Lizard Island is 240 kilometres north of Cairns (Queensland) and is a national park area out near the Great Barrier Reef. We are very north (like the top NE corner) so it’s 27 degrees today with 25 degree water. Now you’re probably wondering what Aquabumps is doing here  as there are no waves due to the great BARRIER reef…well, there IS a break out here on the outer edge called Dynamites…but it’s blowing 30 knots on the exposed side and the trip out would be a rough one in 3 metre swells. Swim time.
Even with this gale blowing, one side of Lizard island is protected and calm, reminiscent of Fiji. In fact I’d even go as far as saying the live coral formations here are better than those in Fiji and Maldives – it’s so untouched. There are 24 remote beaches at your disposal, mostly only accessible by boat as there are no tracks or cars on the island. We checked out 5 beaches today and didn’t see another foot print, piece of litter or a Bondi Parking Cop…
To get here: fly to Cairns (3hrs from Sydney) then take a Cessna Caravan to Lizard island (1hr). Accommodation? There is only 1 place to stay and the rest of the island is national parks. It’s pretty jujuey. Nicolas Cage, Meg Ryan, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Charlize Theron are regular patrons. More info: www.lizardisland.com.au
Have a great weekend, be sure to drop into the Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street and check out the latest artworks from Mentawais, Hawaii and Australia Day (Manly, Freshie, Curly). Cheers, ::Uge

Darko

It was just one of those days where it’s not worth even opening the car door. The wind was blowing early, the rain has already set in, the swell was small and wind beaten…nothing on offer at all. (oh and it’s quite a bit cooler).
I’d like to say something like ‘no matter it’s going to be cranking on the weekend’…but nup. Not much coming either. So here are some Mentawai flashbacks and random bits to keep you going in between sets. Hang in there.
Random bits:
I have two brothers that have just launched a pretty hot beachside bar in Singapore (see pics). Ok ok, so there are no waves out the front and the beach may be manmade, but their crib looks smokin’ and worthy of a visit next time you’re blowing through Singas on your way to the Ments (tip: Miss Russia is a regular patron – ha!). It’s called Tanjong Beach Club and Sundays are best.
A brave young woman, Denvy Lo is running a 6-day, 250km race across the Gobi Desert to raise awareness of the plight of sharks. Be great if you could contribute to her good cause. more
Enough ramble. ::uge

Brief

Hi.
Not much happening down the beach (again). Bondi was a weak, flappy 1 foot with 3 guys out. The storm clouds are circling and puttin’ on sum precipitation.
It took me 20 minutes to write that opening line…so I might quit whilst I am ahead. Not much to talk about really. The forecast looks dire as well, so do something else kids.
What do you do when there is no surf?

It’s dead calm out there – Lake Bondi that is. Probably the flattest I’ve seen it in months. Completely forget surfing today (in Sydney). You’ll just be disappointed. Tomorrow same same. Sunday tiny and then finally a new south swell on Monday.
Special morning. Not sure if it was the winter sunshine, the still conditions or it’s just Friday. Well worth getting up for.
Lots of grannies got together and knitted a Socceroos scarf the length of Bondi Beach (700m to 1km). 200 kiddies came down to stretch it out…ah yes, just another day down Bondi beach.
Rock into the Aquabumps gallery on the weekend, got new stuff we want to show you. I am hoping on a plane to where it’s warmer than here :: uge

Hued

Interesting morning…it’s as if someone was messing with the hue and saturation dials in my head (I’ve never been the same since I cracked my head open at Vuey – but that’s another story). 1 minute the skies above Benny Buckler were hued with intense colours, and then moments later its grey, dull and contrast less. Shame no one was messing with the swell dial as its pretty close to flat. I am talking under your knee caps, and yes, of course there were 20 people out optimistically staring at the horizon for a set that never came. Sit tight, keep calm and carry on.
We still have a few items on sale in the Aquabumps Gallery – see list.

Mini

You’re not really missing out on anything down the beach. That south swell has lost it’s grunt and 1-1.5 footers were dribbling into Bondi early this morning. Nice sunny winter light but cold once again.
The radar shows no swell energy for the rest of the week, so a good time to do something else…
Random::
GSI has won an International Design Award with it’s the Meyerhoffer Surfboard design, one of the most radical developments in board innovation for a long time. Looks kinda weird with wonky rails…tight tail…but apparently they’re manoeuvrable for a long board.
Martine Emdur, local talented underwater painter launches her new collection tomorrow at Tim Olsen’s Gallery.
Altered Landscape, the new surf film by Kai Neville is something else. I not feeling good about my surfing after watching what these kid do on waves in the Mentawais.
Enough distractions :: uge

D E C L I N E

After a week’s supply of solid south swell it’s dropped back into 2 footers. It looks like it’s going to be small all week long, especially Thursday/Friday where is could be dead flat. Enjoy the sunshine and chilly mornings – freezing this morning. It’s about the only surfable day left in this week so I’d get out there if you’re keen…
Local surfboard shaper, Andrew Harris (AH) is having another board sale this Saturday. He made me a mod-fish 5’11” and I reckon it rocks. Meaty enough to ride the fat of Bondi yet a pulled in tail to throw out a bit of heat (rare if I am riding it). Sale starts 9am, Saturday 19th June at AH surfboards 27/15 Meadow Way Banksmeadow (his factory door) www.ahsurfboards.com
Finally we’ve got ALL new works in the Aquabumps Gallery. My latest shots from Hawaii, Mentawai and Australia Day chopper aerials are up! Yes (crowded) north beaches images from the sky are hanging on our Bondi walls (we get a lot of enquiries about these images). So come right on in, 10am to 6pm, every day except Mondays 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach (behind the old Bondi Hotel pub) t:9103 7788.
Adios, uge

Intermission

Yesterday and Tuesday this week were incredible days to be a surfer in Sydney. Everyone has stories of scoring gold.
Well, the epic SE swell has died from yesterday… and we’ve only had a few hour gap before a brand spankin’ new south swell has arrived. Wish I had a time lapse series from this morning…at 6:30am 1 ft, 7:30am is slightly kicked to 2 – 3 footish and now it’s 4-6 foot and roaring. Why can’t  it be  like this all year ’round. OH, did I mention the sunshine is out…the wind has the winters claws that dig deep, but nice to get some rayz, soak it up.
There is swell all the way through to next week…go surfing whenever you can at south exposed beaches (they may start to max out soon)…
In the gallery we’ve got these hot new 30mm thick acrylic blocks ( 30cm x 20cm ). They sit on your desk as a window to where you’d rather be. They also come in a handmade Aquabumps box…great for a gift and we can put any image in them. People think they look 3d. Come hava look in the gallery. WOW

Wow – what a morning. It all began with a vivid sunrise at Bondi as bright hues smeared across the skies. Loads of people up early exercising after being locked indoors for the past 3 weeks. The swell is still here, Bondi had 4-5 footers but mostly closing out. The Bra has a vicious rip spitting out some nice little caves. Heaven. Barely anyone around…gotta love winter surfing in Sydney.
I don’t think you’ll have to look hard to find good waves today – most beaches have sumpin’. Go early, as it’s about to blow 20-30 knots!
Dead south swell tomorrow, and offshore…but much bigger. yeha!

Gold

What a magic day to not be in the office. 3-5 foot waves, clean offshores and finally some sunshine – the 3rd day without rain in a month.
Bondi had some great waves at sunrise. A left was putting on some barrells, but I reckon that would be a common story on many beaches in NSW today.
Pretty much anywhere would be decent, so best work out a way to weasel yourself away from desk shackles.
Check out the pile of sand at South Bondi from the recent storms. Huge mound. Need the rip to take it all back out to sea so the right will work again.
Enjoy ::uge

R O A R

This morning the sun came out to play – hooray! Kinda nice being able to take photos outside of the back seat of the van.
Swell is up and thumpin’. Bronte to Bondi has 4-6 footers with strong offshore winds early. No one out as it looks a little wild and crazy.
I’d head north to Palmie if you’re not working today….otherwise wait for it to calm down a little.
A week of sunshine ahead…finally.

I’d rather be at….

Guess what? It’s raining…yeah I know, unbelievable right? It’s bucketing down right now as I write this.
Look on the bright side, the salt on your car will be rinsed off, the garden will spring back green, the dams are full and you can get a park pretty much anywhere in Bondi.
Still….I know I’d rather be at these location photographed in this update – Maldives, Rotto or Hawaii.
Surf? Come on. Forget it. Onshore onslaught has began (howling). It was a foamy mess last time I looked. Ugly day.
Weekend will have showers (no surprises there) and horribly onshore (again) 3-4 footers.
If this rain and wind doesn’t stop I am going to run out of images from the archives.
SALE
We have a huge sale on right now in the gallery and oh boy aren’t you all keen. View our sale page (we’ve put more up) and call 9130 7788 if you want anything. Or better still – come in! To be honest I don’t think any of the 100 sale artworks will be left after tomorrow morning, it’s been busy. We’ve had hundreds thru and hundreds of calls. Sorry if all the lines are busy – we are here! 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW

memories

As winter dominates today we have soggy 2-3 footers at Bondi. The SE winds are making a mess of it so you’ll have to surf somewhere with better protection. I sat in the car park for 30 minutes as it poured (and still is pouring), shooting some of the worst images I’ve taken in a while, so I decided it was just not good enough to show y’all and found a loose CF card from our recent trip that hadn’t been downloaded – and whatdaya know…some water shots from H-tees – here they are. Enjoy on this cold day and let’s hope it cleans up soon.
My best mate Katie runs a Yoga Class at Darma Sharla (Brighton Boulevard North Bondi) tonight at 7:45pm and wants you all to come along. She’s a good teacher so why not get bendy. She said she’d cook me dinner if I mention it.
During the Bondi Community event ‘Bondi Sizzle’ they had a pirate foamie comp…and here’ is the video (good viewing for a rainy day)

Aquabumps is having the sale that we never have. The largest collection of drastically reduced artworks ever. Why? Have we lost our minds? Are we selling up and heading to the islands to live under a coconut tree? Hardly. We’ve got a whole pile of S A M P L E S, ex D E M O s, E X P E R I M E N T s, and just stock that we’re hocking off dirt cheap, in most cases is below cost price (and we’re not just saying that Chinatown style) – true. We’ve never really done a sale of this magnitude before.
When? now and until Sunday 6pm 6th June 2010
Where? The Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi (usual place)
How? You can come in, cash’n’grab or buy over the phone 9130 7788 (full payment required – no holding unless 100% paid)

The Abduction Van

My van looks suss at the best of times…people think it’s a ASIO abduction van and the side door will swing open snatchin’ your children. Well today is looked extra suss with a 600mm lens gorking out the side door. When I tried to explain to the morning walkers that I was shooting surfing pics, dressed all in black, I got the nod of “oh yeah right – weirdo”.
So all these images are shot from the back seat of the gallery delivery van (due to incessant rain). It’s amazing how many angles you can actually get from the same place (using a variety of lenses of course).
The swell has dropped, the winds are offshore(ish) SW and it’s a lot neater today – but still not perfect. Waves are 3 foot – worth a paddle out for sure.

w o n k y

Lotsa wonkiness out there at 7am. Even though the southern corner was partially protected, the ocean is still showing signs of yesterdays 35 knot agitation. Large sets, 4-6 foot and barely anyone out. The S.W. winds will settle as we progress through the day…hopefully tidying up a little.
Tomorrow will be 3 feet and cleaner. Perhaps hang in the office until then.
You’ve got until 3pm to bid on one of my cameras, a top of the wozza 21.1 megapixel beast (Canon 1dsMKiii) and its pet brother water housing.
Hava good day :: uge
