Bonjourno! Welcome to The Amalfi Coast of Italy where it’s a roasting 33 degrees – everyday. Like Australians… the Italians love the beach (or Spiaggia). They celebrate summer by baking on every rock, pier, lilo or 100m super yacht. It was a full house yesterday – everywhere. Positano would give Bondi a run for it’s money with beach crowds…image if you had to walk down a single 2 metre wide lane to access Bondi on a 50,000+ crowd day. That’s Positano – complete chaos.
I’ve wanted to shoot the Amalfi Coast via the air for years. It’s one of those bucket list type things. So happy it was an amazing day. Great colours with the umbrellas against volcanic black sand. Enjoy.

By the time you read this post I’ve flown the coop… On a work adventure of course. Hard work.
Where we going now? You ever been to Italy? Yeah baby…we’re gonna try something a little different and check out The Med beaches of Capri, Amalfi and South of France.
Surfing? Definitely not. Not even packing. Just a whole lot of swimming, shooting, eating and one or two drinks. I once posted from the Italian Riviera (10 years ago!)…so it’s going to be great to get back there.
It may be raining here in Sydney today – but the surf pretty big (5-6 foot) but the wind is all over it.
Today’s images are from my second home – Hawaii. People ask me why I love that place so much. Well I hope these photograph explain why. Big challenging surf, clear water, amazing light…Hawaiian Airlines are doing deals to Oahu. Take advantage

How wild was that storm last night? Crazy huh? Any hail damage on your vehicle? Roof hold up? Do tell…
I was a lil’ surprised to see the sun pop out this morning after such a prominent storm. I think it will whip into rain and greys later today.
Shark fever continues…Pama Davies, our local hotshot/aerial wizard…was surfing Bondi last night on dark. A big shadow swam under him and freaked everyone out. Pama said “100% sure it was a shark…big one…” “about the size of a jetski with the sled”. Pama was pretty rattled and got everyone out of the water. Was it Freddy?
No wonder the line up was empty at Bondi this morning – with good waves, 3 foot.
In comparison to recent months, Bondi was a ghost town this morning. Humanless. It’s very rare to see the water completely empty (8am it was).
No waves and grey skies. Time to catch up on work.
How good was the weather on Saturday? Amazing for this time of year. Watch this and you’ll see.
Hawaiian airlines are offering a very special rate to a very special place. $955 SYD to HAWAII. In 6-8 weeks you’ll start to see the first swells trickling into the North Shore of Oahu. Good times.
Once the swell breaks through the head high barrier it maxes out our delicate Eastern suburbs beaches – limiting surfing options. This morning there was a whole lot of standing around in car parks trying to work out where to go. The answer on low tide – coffee!
I am hoping the higher tides will be more forgiving…nonetheless it’s a stunning day worthy of an outdoor visit. Can you believe it’s going to hit 23 degrees today! Hang on…what’s even weirder is that tomorrow is going to be a summery 25 degrees. Incredible for this time of year. Sunday will see a whole lot of rain so enjoy the good times now.
If you don’t know what to get your pops for Father’s day – how about our book deal and get our latest Havianas free? Buy
Today I elected to spend my morning underwater…in the blue. The water temperature has stepped up a tad and the clarity was really decent. The 2-3 footers at Bondi were fun, but mainly closing out on the lower tides. Higher tides should show an improvement.
Father’s day (Sunday September 6) is fast approaching. Suggested gift ideas:
A new wetsuit for spring, this O’neill Gooru is so good.
John John Future fins.
Springcourt mid’s. The most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn.
A small (47cm x 33cm) $150, raw oak, framed photo of our latest and greatest ‘Wave Churn’ from Aquabumps. Takes 2 weeks so order now
A six pack.
Comfy pant from Academy.
If you’re minted, he will fall over if you buy him a boat trip to Mentawais.
I’d be happy with anything above…and I am a Dad.
Gee we’ve had some pretty decent, fun-sized surf lately. Not too big…so our sand banks can hold it…not too small so you can get shacked. Head high mostly. Offshore winds to boot!
Friday is going to be a fun one out of town…need a reef facing south.
Enjoy the great weather (again).
These sunny days just keep comin’. I reckon we’ve had around 100 sunny days this winter (and only 2 or 3 rainy days). Magic isn’t it?
The surf was good earlier, but the wind is in now. We’ve been thriving off this small south swell that has been here for 5 or 6 days. Most beaches in the East have had something fun to surf.
Today I shot with 2 new Canon lenses. I never shoot wide any more, but this new ultra wide zoom got me excited (11mm to 24mm F4). It’s a huge chunk of glass…but shoots a super sharp image and doesn’t distort like those ancient fisheyes. The 2nd lens was the updated version of the 100-400mm. In the past I wouldn’t consider shooting a long zoom – as I find prime lenses so much sharper…but the geeks at Canon have sprinkled some magic on this bad boy – sharp as! Nice and small bit of kit to climb rocks and sand dunes with.
‘Nuf geek talk.

An 8 foot Bronze Whaler shark has claimed South Bondi to be his new home. He’s been pottering around ‘The Boot’ freaking people out for a few days now. The beach has been closed a few times since Thursday. For once, I was quite happy to surf with 100 people, a jetski, Clubbie IRBs, helicopters and buzzing drones. It appears he’s really quite friendly! I’ve called him Freddy. He’ll be back…
The waves were so fun all weekend. Weather wasn’t too shabby either. Clear skies for days!
You all know I’ve got a soft spot for New Zealand after my recent trip a couple of weeks ago. Love those Kiwis – apart from when they’re whipping us at Eden Park. Air NZ has employed some very special Men In Black to rap their way through the latest in flight video. It’s funny. View Video
Father’s day is Sunday September 6th – just under 3 weeks away. I bet he’d like a little custom artwork from our Aquabumps Gallery starting at $150. Here’s a selection of some of my fave’s he’d like I reckon.
Everyone is talking about it…and I mean everyone! S S S S H AAAAAA R K S ! The Bondi lifeguards have confirmed that there was a 8 foot Bronze Whaler shark in front of Icebergs yesterday – just cruizin’ in the south end rip scaring the fine diners upstairs. The beach was closed yesterday and today. Cameo appearance in Bondi Rescue TV show perhaps? The media are in a frenzy, helis are circling and everyone is on high alert. Do we care? Seems not. Bondi was PACKED this morning with decent waves on offer. Our famous left lit up at mid-tide…in 1 hour I’ve never seen so many drop ins. I saw a wave with 8 on it still more paddling for it! Joy!
Offshore all day. Bingo.
Good afternoon. Sorry about the late post, I did shoot at sunrise in the frosty winds. Cold wasn’t it?
Bondi had a little wave, 1-2 foot at 7am. With an inbound swell it’s growing by the minute. Right now it’s 3 foot. The next 5 days is going to be perfect for around here. Small south swells…that don’t close out the bay. Sunny to boot! Good times.
Chris Prestidge is another local photographer that focuses on portraits and weddings. I see him down Bondi all the time either on the log on capturing the flattering warm morning light. Check out Chris’s work here
Looks just like yesterday! Not a cloud in the sky…1-2 footers…clean az…perfect for a swim!
There seems to be only two banks in operation at Bondi. Both are popular with the early risers and long boarders.
Surfcraft or not, nice one to swim. Very invigorating.
The shark situation around Byron Bay is sparking media attention and talk amongst the surfers. SMH wrote this piece and how about this footage at Broken Head?
As I am hitting send on this post, it’s raining.
If I could bottle these magical mornings up, they’d sell like hotcakes. Why so good? Well, it was 10 degrees which felt quite warm compared to last week. There was no wind, so the water surfaces were dead calm. There’s a neat lil’ left grinding in, circa 1-2 foot (take the log). The vibe was great and everyone was smiling. You can smell the changing of the seasons as sun is rising earlier, allowing more waves before work.
Fact: The Pommes love Aquabumps. Our biggest readership outside of Australia is the motherland – ENGLAND! I reckon Home & Away kicked off their lust for our beaches…and now they’re hooked on our daily email escapes. If you are reading this and live in LONDON we just launched our latest sunglass collaboration with Bondi born brand – BAILEY NELSON. Bailey Nelson all started with selling good looking frames at the Bondi Markets, now they have stores all over the globe – several stores in London where you can buy the latest Bailey Nelson x Aquabumps sunnies. I have a grumpy mate (no names)…he labelled the Bondi waves today ‘surfable’. He under cooks everything. I reckon it looked super fun. The left bowl was on. I saw plenty of good waves rolling in. The tide is going high now…and I would say the swell will fade fast. Not a great deal of swell for the rest of the week.
Special thank you to everyone that donated to our SurfAid cup team. I truly appreciate it. We’ve currently raised $8k for SurfAid…and only a few weeks to go. If you haven’t yet, it’ll be awesome. Donate here (we are trying to raise $50k for them!)
Well hello and welcome to our 3,456th installment of Aquabumps. Today we are going to take you to the crispy blue waters of Maroubra beach where the current south swell is breaking in an orderly fashion, @ 2-3 foot…and sometimes bigger. The grooming offshore winds are creating clean faces and frosty toes. 6 degrees!
So you’ve been reading my quirky corner of the internet for some time now. I’ve been doing this for 16 years – can you believe it? We are growing old together. Now I have a little favour to ask… I need your money. Any amount… I need you to sponsor the Aquabumps surf team who are about to surf in the SurfAid cup – 1st week of Sept. All your hard earned coin will go the needy people of Mentawai. Surfaid is our No.1 charity – I ONLY beg for money once a year. Think of it as a subscription fee to this otherwise free beach service. C’mon. Could ya? Donate Here
If you are running the City to Surf…come see us in the Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi – a stone’s throw away from the finish line. Open all day 10am to 6pm. You can even rest up in our garden…
Have you noticed that Waverley Council has doubled it’s workforce around Bondi, frantically cleaning the joint for the arrival of 150,000 people on Sunday? Buffing kerbs with toothbrushes, removing graffiti, blowing every spec of sand off the promenade…yep…Bondi in it’s best duds from the City to Surf spotlight. Wait until you see it @ 2pm Sunday…she won’t be so shiny. Why can’t Bondi look this good all the time!
Swell has come up from the South. Sun is on full strength. No clouds. Offshore winds. Cold (really cold). Every beach seemed to be closing out straight…take a drive and you’ll score for sure.

It’s was a frosty one this morning. 5 degrees is what my phone called it. The little breeze off them mountains had bite. Not as breezy at Lenny Kravitz’s pants though.
I wanted to enter the water to shoot today…to feel alive. Very invigorating. Some nice left peelers reforming on the inside but the rip was pretty insane for such a small day. Could barely hold your position.
4 Bondi locals are about to embark on a 1,000 km kite boarding mission across the Great Barrier Reef to raise needed funds for MND Motor Neurone Disease (ALS). You can donate to support them or rock up to The Bucket List tomorrow night (Thurs) at 7pm for their fundraiser launch party. Get involved!
Cold – ain’t it just? Very different to the last few days weeks months. ‘Grey’ and ‘drizzle’ – two words to best describe what I saw down the beach this morning. Gonna get even colder tomorrow. Ah-huh. I bet you didn’t get out from under the covers until it was in the 7’s. A good one to sleep in.
Good news! We have some new south swell. It’s wobbly, random, closing out – but 3 foot!
These mornings are immaculate. The crisp, clear, chilly winter’s air is a real treat. Shame about the lack of surf – it’s flat az… Fortunately tomorrow will host the odd 3 footer and it will build from there.
Just when you’ve think you’ve seen it all, a guy pulls out his dirt bike and tries to ride Teahuppo. For real. Watch this twisted Aussie, Robbie Mad Maddison take on ‘Chopes. Watch now
