A dark old morning down there…couldn’t shoot until at least 7:15am – even then was shooting in the 1200ISO plus range. Little bump at Bondi, 2-3 footers but really junkie. Small wolf pack trying to pick off the lefts but didn’t really see anyone get a decent ride that wasn’t wonky and fat. The early morning high tide ain’t great for it – perhaps towards the low.
Lots of whales cruising past Bondi around 7:30am…yes, it’s whale season.
Thanks for all the messages about our recent APPA award. The Aquabumps gallery has sold out of books, but our buddies at the Speedo store in Bondi Junction have some copies for sale. (Speedo is the ONLY other place that sells our Aquabumps book).

The swell arrived but so did the wind (and a bit of rain). Slim pickings out there morning. A choppy 3 foot bump poked up every now and then at South Bondi. Barely anyone out – or even on the beach for that matter. The winds should back off from 20 knots back to 10 knots. Maybe there will be something to ride when it all calms down. Photo opportunities were scarce this morning…luckily there’s been some great light and waves lately to pull a few from last week’s catch.
Smaller and still onshore tomorrow – hooray!
Good morning. There’s some little waves around the traps, Bondi was 2 foot and fat. I’d surf it, probably on a fat board though…something wider than 19 inches to be exact. Tomorrow should be bigger but it could be a lil’ junkie with a trailing SE wind and short interval (5 secs).
APPA Awards – We won!
Last night our book, “Aquabumps – A Day at Bondi” won Australian Photography Book of the year 2011 by the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP). That’s kinda a big deal for us seeing there are so many incredible photographers in the awards. So after decade of shooting Bondi, a string of late nights working on the book – not to mention 24 hour Singaporean press checks – it’s paid off! The only bad news is we’ve ran out of stock – so if you haven’t got one yet you will have to wait until September 2011 when the second batch arrives. Special thanks to Canon for sponsoring me and the awards…couldn’t have done it without my bag of white lenses. Also thanks to Ant Donovan who designed the book (legend) and Laura Richardson…
Have a good day :: uge
I was surprised to see it even breaking this morning as the rest of the beach was flat like a lake. Get used to it kids, as this whole week looks pretty dry on the swell front….nothing much above your knee caps.
If you are a very motivated, hypo, early morning type person you would have scored 1, maybe 2 waves on your log around 7am. They could have been a wake from a large boat passing ‘cause when I rode past a minute ago it was flat again.
Yesterday I donned the goggles and swam around the mighty fine chunk of sand in the southern corner. What a beautiful piece of work that is. I say we glue that bank down right where it is – ‘cause its real good.. The deep gutter off to the side allows waves to break ‘properly’ and not close out. Who would’ve thought that was possible at Bondi eh?
A new electric bike shop has just opened up along Campbell Parade. So if you’re having trouble getting up the Bondi Road hill I suggest some assistance.
Enjoy your week :: uge
PS – If you once got Aquabumps and don’t anymore…let us know! (assume you are then reading this on our website then)
I sat on a rock this morning for a good hour watching 20 odd crew pick off some nice little waves. It’s only 2-3 foot and breaking tight in the corner amongst the morning glare – fun and consistent. There are more lefts than rights but I think that will change as the tide pushes in. The water is 18 degrees, which um, is OK, but the dash from the car park will wake you up.
It’s not going to get any bigger than this, in fact it will start to decline into a swell-less weekend. Winds are offshore westerly and a lot lighter than recent days. Enjoy it kids…
Le Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm both Saturday and Sunday for all your blank wall filling needs.

Thought the swell was going to pump up a bit this morning – looks to be running late. We still have some 1 foot dribbles with infrequent, one-every-15-minute-sets. It’s clean, winds are grooming offshore and not a cloud in the sky. Winds will blow 20 knots from the SW (that direction of wind is always cold – direct from the snow fields).
Lots of activity down the beach this morning – A big pod of dolphins raced past the line-up whilst a whale breached out the back. Hope you got down there.
Scurvy – We could all eat more greens. Local Bronte surfer Gav (Bagus) has a fruit and veg delivery service direct from Flemington markets. Get a box delivered to your door weekly.
This freezing, howling wind has blown all the swell out to sea by the looks of it. Bondi at 6:10am didn’t even break – Lake Bondi. However, by 8:00am I saw a ‘wave’ every 15 minutes…then at 9:10am there’s a little something to sample – 1 to 2 foot, breaking nice on the left. Could be tidal. Could just be a mini pulse.
Tomorrow afternoon it should come back (please Huey). Pray for swell.
So you’re looking for things to do…check out Stab’s night surfing video (hot), My brothers had a party on the weekend – do you think they could have any more people at their joint? (in Singapore), how about checking out local film genius Rob Norman’s snow vids Rip Raw
Ah yes, we’ve been having technical problems lately…yep I know. Emails coming in late, slow etc. Basically there is too many of you and our image heavy email is choking our server. So we’ve chumped the server up and working on a solution…thank you for your patience. No really…today should be much better.
Out :: uge
A few of my mates think it’s a bit odd that I get up at sunrise every day. Those same mates think the best time of the day is 3am at the White Revolver (yeah you creepy Birdman). 6:30am this morning was a good time of day to be down the beach. The best. It was reasonably warm for winter, the sky was doused saturated hues…not to forget a neat little 1-2 foot left/right bank was puttin’ fun ones on. Good times. However, a 30 knot westerly is going to howl this afternoon flanked with rain – so live the now.
Who is Otis? Otis Carey is a 22 year old aerial junkie that has recently moved to Bondi from Coffs Harbour. He’s a proud indigenous surfer who you’d normally see grovelling in 1 footers in the middle of the beach. He can pull an air off nothing. I mean just the slightest ramp and you’ll see him orbiting, wings flappin’, mad mane of hair swinging, mid rotation. He rides for Insight (started in the warehouse packing boxes) and scored a wildcard into this year’s Boost Air Sho at Bondi where you saw him fin flashin’ his way to the finals.
Ok enough ramble. Back to work.
Last weekend was a great one for surfers. Solid swell on both days – if only it could be that good all the time.
As predicted the swell has backed off this morning, but there are still super fun 3 footers. I don’t think it will hang around for long…dwindling fast.
Tomorrow will be small again before, yep, another SE swell arrives. Nothing big, which best suits the Eastern suburbs banks.
Its 11 degrees right now, top of 19 and mostly sunny. Enjoy today as tomorrow will have rain.
Seeya :: uge
PS – just got back from the beach, 2nd shoot. Taj Burrow, Craig Ando, Sam Mac and Otis Carey all shredding Bondi around 11am. See pics on our Facebook page
Today is the light at the end of a Grey tunnel. After close to 1 week of unsurfable conditions we have offshore winds and 4-6 footers. Bondi was smaller as there is plenty of east in the swell, but neighbouring bays had plenty. At sunrise it looked full and wobbly…but by the time you read this should be lining up real nice. It’s a shame nowhere in the Eastern suburbs handles such a decent swell – you must drive well away from here and yee shall score for sure.
This swell is on the decline, waves will still be good tomorrow but much smaller on Sunday. Thankfully the rain will cease for a whole week as we thaw out in the winter sun. Yep, you can go outside now.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend long, 10am to 6pm. There’s plenty of new shops and cafes open in our hood so come down on the weekend. You will find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 telephone 02- 9130 7788. Map
PS – we recently changed the email blast engine that sends this photo slice from the beach. I know a few of you have been experiencing some problems, we are working night and day on fixing that (ok, maybe a little exaggeration – the work experience kid is on it).
Good morning. Beach conditions are pretty much the same as the past 4 days. Around 8am there was a short stint of sunshine, but then 20 minutes later it bucketed down (again).
Today is the last day of this onshore mess plague. The forecast shows a change in winds tomorrow, so maybe the seas will line up better.
A good time of year to travel I think. If you want to go to the Mentawais next year you need to book now. We travel on Tengirri and happy with them. They have 2 spots free on a charter 30th July to 11th August 2011 if you want a last minute surf trip. Email [email protected]
Have a good day, uge
Cheer up, this stormy weather is not so bad. The garden never looked so green…the car is sparkling and your sulo bin is running amuck in your neighbour’s yard.
The 30 knot southerly is ruining your surf opportunities though. A ‘wave’ was breaking at North Bondi – but, wow, you’d wanna be keen.
Friday things should come good….sit tight.
I went down early this morning and had a look at Bondi. It was an onshore mess of white water and rain. 1 guy running, 2 guys surfing and that’s about it. Uninspired, I took 1 image and returned to the sanctuary of the office trawling some Hawaiian juice to provide today’s aquatic escape.
Get used to it…looks like today, tomorrow and the next are all pouring with rain. The 30 knot onshore will make sure there’s not much on offer in the surf. Swell will be large on Wednesday though – and the winds won’t be offshore until at least Thursday/Friday.
Have a nice day and keep dry :: uge
Good afternoon…sorry about the late transmission. Been roaming the south coast in search of a wave. The south swell is on the up and will keep pulsing into tonight where it will peak at 6-8 foot. (chunky)
Currently it’s a dead south swell…Saturday, Sunday and Monday all have waves within the 3-foot mark, just a few problems with the flanking winds. (Which will sometimes blow 20 knots)
If in Sydney this long weekend, the Aquabumps Gallery is open 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach – right behind the Bondi Hotel Telephone 9130 7788 open Saturday/Sunday 10am to 6pm (Closed on public holiday Monday)
Have a good long weekend, got one to hit the road and get out of town…
Later :: Uge
Hey there, the first few sets of this brand spankin’ new south swell has started to roll up into the bay of Bondi. What a welcome sight. 2 foot, occasionally 3 footers but reasonably consistent. Nice little right tucked up in the corner and some golden morning light to defrost you. The surf is only going to get bigger from here on…peaking Friday night…but plenty of waves to be had in the next few days – thankfully she’s a long weekend – good one to get out of town.
Yesterday I offended some people with my ignorance, sorry. It was an Antarctic Blitz not Arctic Blitz as we live in the southern hemisphere. Sorry about that smart people.
Jhiymy 2 hats
You might know him as Jhiymy Mhiyles, Bondi Caveman, Jimmy 2 Hats or Peter James Paul Millhouse – I’ve never known anyone to have so many names. He is the 55 year old that squatted for a decade in the cliffs of South Bondi and featured in many of my shots. Well on a steamy Melbourne Cup day back in 2009 he was arrested for having sexual intercourse without consent of a woman…since that day, he’s been held in custody awaiting trial (long time)…his ocean side pad packed up…and that was that. On the 31st May Judge Peter Zahra was told the rape case would not proceed by the DPP. Millhouse still faces charges of resisting arrest though…
Over and out :: uge
And you thought yesterday was cold, welcome to today. The wind is howling 20 knots which can make it feel a lot colder than what the weather man says. Much warmer in the water than out…19 in, 7 out.
At Bondi there was a ‘wave’. It was 1-2 foot, peeling left for 15 metres. A long boarders heaven. Don’t worry, swell coming Friday in time for your long weekend.
Have a good day :: uge
PS – my brother Christian took some of these photos (he likes blurry shots)
Don’t be fooled by the sunny weather – is pretty chilly outside (7) – and it’s only going to get colder as this week progresses. Some arctic air is being pushed up by a low off Tassie…so the first weekend of the ski season should have something to slide on.
Down at Bondi it all started with a decent sunrise. Patches of colour hung over the Buckler while a new, small pulse of south swell provided fun 2 footers for the few out.
People ask me about my camera gear daily. I use Canon gear and have done so well before they came on as a major sponsor. (So no one ask me to write this – don’t worry, not an infomercial.) Today, I’ve used a new body, Canon 7d. Was really impressed with this little nugget. Some would ask why a full time shooter would mess with a cheaper, small body… Well, it’s packed with goodness, 8 frames a second (now that’s not far off my 10 frame 1 series). Plenty of focus points (19 in fact – kicks butt over the 5d)…and most importantly she’s small, so swimming is easy and all round better handling. I’m pretty tired of luggin’ huge bodies around. So – I give it the thumbs up.
Tengirri – surf the Mentawais
It’s that time of year again, you need to find a few mates and book a charter boat to the surf rich Mentawai Islands off Sumatra (in 2012). I’ve been every year for about 10 now…so I guess that says it all. We travel on Tengirri, an Aussie run boat, small, fast, and great service. How’s that for a wrap. www.tengirri.com or book thru [email protected]
Good bye :: uge
Surely you’ve filled your wave quotas on the weekend’s booming East swell – it really turned on last Saturday. This morning it has run out of gas and currently 2 foot (ish) around the corner (with 1 freak set pictured that broke above head high). Bondi was struggling to produce anything worth riding (protected from East swells)…but a nice morning to be down there nonetheless.
What’s that? Another swell hitting later in the week – yep. This one is going to be a dead south swell.
Have a great week. ::Uge
PS – if you know of any Magento Ecommerce design/dev genius people that are decent in Sydney hit me back. Me looking.
After a disastrous week of surf she turns to gold. Solid 6 foot East ground swell, summery sunshine and favourable winds. The early morning high tide put heaps of wobble in the walls, but now, oh my…she’s clean as a whistle and barrelling on the low.
Where?….everywhere. East swell will feed most locations and there is plenty of it over the next few days. Enjoy. Just finished shooting these pics 2 hrs ago South of Sydney.
McTavish is offering Aquabumps readers 10% off from their new online store. Check it

You can download our free iPhone app (just type Aquabumps in the App store) or better still join the other 21,000 on our Facebook page.
Ok…enough about Aquabumps, have a good weekend
Guess what? It’s still blowing filthy onshore. North Bondi has some protection from the East nemesis winds, and a few little surfable(ish) waves. Nothing special though. Exposed beaches are 4-6 foot…just messy as hell.
The forecast says tomorrow afternoon the wind will kick around to the NE. Finally some clean waves will be on offer and that twitch will disappear.
I reckon the next 4 days will make up for the poor surf of the past 4 days. Cheer up.
Sydney’s 1st $900,000 artificial reef
NSW Government announced that construction of its first offshore artificial reef will begin soon. Only $900,000 is being spent on the reef and is being erected 1.2 kms off the Gap at Vaucluse. The reef is expected to greatly improve recreational fishing opportunities off Sydney. Damn those Fishos are smart…this is the 1st of 3 fishing reefs. So errrm, the obvious question is – how about an artificial reef at Bondi? The swell magnet will pump with something to break on…a 300 metre right off The Boot? Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts. (comment below)

Hard day to get any decent shots of surfing. The winds are still howling (E), like the past 3 days. Only 2-3 guys out at North Bondi – man they’re keen. It was a junkyard out there. Everywhere else was deserted. The best wave I saw all morning was caught by body surfer, Lee with his little homemade pod/chopping board. Ripping.
Best wait until these nemesis east winds subside – Friday. East (E) swell here for days and days.
Have a nice day, maybe drop into Surfection Mosman and pick up a wettie in their sale, :: (E)ug(E)n(E)
