Manly vs Bondi

I’ve got a confession. Once upon a time I lived in Manly. True. I lived right behind the storm water pipe at North Steyne. I was only there for a year’n’half…but I got a good feel for the joint. Good waves over there, especially in summer with the north swells.
Today I headed back over there. It’s very similar to Bondi in a lot of ways. Same-Same, but different. Everything evolves around the beach. At sunrise Manly was packed, like Bondi. The health-kick revolution is in full swing over there as well. It’s a bigger beach (longer) and 17 kms from the CBD (where as Bondi is 8km). What I like is how their village is right on the edge of the beach, not like Bondi where we have a footie field separating us.
Manly is cleaner, that’s for sure…and the properties are better maintained. Maybe because Bondi faces south where we wear the brunt of the big winter storms.
Oh boy…that traffic bottleneck across The Spit is hard work! I’m coming over on a ski next time.

Summer Blast

Today is amazing. It’s just like summer. As I write this it is 29 degrees. It is going to hit 30+ today. Even hotter tomorrow. Tomorrow in fact will nearly break records.
There is barely anything to surf…drag the log down there and you may find something to push you. For most of this week it’s going to be tiny.
Enjoy today and tomorrow, Wednesday will be a lot cooler.

Friday Fling

The winds were howling onshore this morning and making a BIG mess. Bondi had a few rideable waves around waist to chest high…and when I say rideable…I’m being a little loose with my terminology. At least the storms have blown over revealing some decent sunshine. How crazy was that hail storm yesterday? Mental. Came out of nowhere.
Small waves are forecasted for the entire weekend. Lots of south winds (messy). Sunday is going to be a total beach day with 24 bangin’ degrees. Monday is going to be 27! I can feel a RDO coming up.
Don’t forget our collab with Speedo swimwear has hit the racks. Women’s range is selling like hotcakes. Especially this one which is breaking records. It features a shot of mine from Mentawais.
Have a great weekend and remember we are open in the Aquabumps Gallery Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 9103 7788.
Ciao, ::uge

Patchy

The sky was smothered with clouds. A light rain shower at 6:00am would have persuaded you to stay in bed. You’re not missing much down the beach. A new NE swell has hit, 2ft max. Quiet down the beach. I spent a bit of the morning riding around Bondi, down the alleys, looking for stuff I hadn’t noticed before. Always find new stuff.
Have a great day. Tomorrow hosts a south swell around head high – b i n g o !

Radiant

It’s days like these that make my job an absolute pleasure. Na it’s not 4-6 foot and pumping nor is Jon-Jon doing alley oops in the south. It’s just small with nice light and warm conditions. Bondi hosted a few peaks, better suited to the longboard variety. Everyone was out there with a big smile.
It pays to get up early at the moment. You can surf from 5:30am until the time change – utilize it. Enjoy a 2 hours surf before work. Lots of people do.
Aquabumps is looking for staff. No, sorry…no vacancies in the photography department, got that covered. We need sales staff to work in our Bondi gallery on weekends. Come join the family. Read this job description for more information and email us your resume if you feel like you’re a perfect fit.

Rip Currents

The rip at 1st ramp in Bondi is a freak. So much water running out to sea it was unswimable. I tried for 1 hour but kept of sliding out the back into no-mans-land.
Great day for a swim nonetheless, maybe up the north end where it’s all calm.
Bondi has waves in the head high vicinity. The banks are pretty horrible so I would pursue other options if you are keen to surf today.
Great day – banging sunshine and light winds.
Enjoy.

Elusive

Well, 4pm…and you’re just getting your Aquabumps update. Hope you have been productive at work…now take a break and see what’s happening down the beach.
There is plenty of swell around and the winds have been offshore (not now). Even with these good conditions it was pretty hard to find waves around the Eastern Suburbs. All the beaches are pretty maxed and washing through. I drove south to shoot Mark and Jai, the two lucky buggers who had a reef to themselves that threw out some chunky 6 foot nuggets (sporadically).
Our Aquabumps x Speedo women’s swimsuit range has hit the shelves. Have a look girls.

Friday Loco

Cold down there today. Before the sun rose it was hovering around 5 degrees with wind chill.
We have waves, head high and above. The fickle bank was playing up with the tides. Low tide at 10:30am should have something worth surfing.
The waves are going to be fun all weekend with 3-4 foot of south swell. The southerly will blow hard tomorrow late arvo so you will need a protected corner.
Weather should be mostly fine over the weekend. Kinda chilly with winter-like temps.

Burgers

The swell has come up overnight but it’s fat. Porky bits everywhere. Lots of flappin’. You’ll find a wave around head high today and the winds are perfectly offshore (chilly too). The tide is on the way out so hopefully it will improve as the day progresses. (Low tide 9:35am)
Even though it’s a sunny day – there is a chill in the air and we will only climb to 19 degrees.

Head-Count

After perusing the internet it was quiet obvious that the waves were going to be good this morning at Bondi.
West winds (offshore) + a good bank + south swell (streaming directly into Bondi) = stoke
Big crowd this morning. The bank is fickle though and only works on particular tides…making it hard to read.
For the non-surfers that read Aquabumps (plenty), today is a great day for a swim down the beach. A brief swim as the water is still cold.
I need something from you. So you’ve been reading Aquabumps for a few years now. Thank you. Sorry about all the typos and late updates. I need you to donate some hard earned crust to our main charity, SURFAID. Why? Well…Aquabumps have another team in the salubrious SURFAID CUP which is being held next month. It’s a surf comp but we all get together and have a fun day and raise money for this great cause. So help us out…donate now. Our team will be forever grateful.

Mid-Range

The swell has come up slightly and the clouds have returned. Sporadic rain and warmer temps is what you’ll get for most of today. In fact, it’s going to be 25 degrees – which is very comfortable. Tomorrow should have a few fun waves also. (head high)
We have a vacant weekend sales position in the Bondi Aquabumps Gallery. If you read the job description and feel like we’re a match made in heaven, send in your CV. All details are on this webpage.

New Duds

Well…well…well…check us out. After nearly 10 years of using the same daily email template we’ve made a few changes. What do ya reckon? I hope your computer didn’t catch on fire when it hit your inbox and you feel instantly calm with our minimal, zen like approach. In all seriousness…post a comment of your thoughts or problems.
The beach today was full glam. 1 foot waves at Bondi and perfectly clear skies. She’s a bewty isn’t she?
Yesterday was one of the busiest days I have ever seen down here. If I could explain what Manhattan NYC was like – it was Bondi yesterday. Every inch of road had a car, every piece of grass hosted a human. Here are previous years of the same day 2012, 2013, 2009
Swell coming…Wednesday should be fun!

Furlough

I’ve been down the beach a few times already today…I’m yet to be inspired so I am running pics that I shot earlier this week when the sun was out – ok, there is a few randoms from the bird as well.
This morning hosted some pretty horrible surf conditions, 1 foot…maybe 2 (streeeetch), onshore and rainy.
I presume you have something better to do with your time!
We had a surprise batch of our last summer’s Aquabumps x Havaianas Thongs show up at the gallery. So if you want a pair – we’ve got the last ones and all sizes. Come on into the gallery this weekend 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 02 9130 7788. Sorry, you can’t buy them online – must come into store.

R U OK?

Today is “Are you OK?” day.
Today is dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, “R U OK?”, in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference and even save lives.
Big crew came down the beach this morning to support the occasion.
Not much else happening on the wave front. Small knee cappers on 1 bank in the South. Tomorrow will be head high but onshore.
Soak up this amazing weather (max 24) as tomorrow is a different story.

Grovel

At 7am this morning rain took over Sydney. The beach was deserted and there was a knee high wave crumbling at South Bondi.
I’ve seen it better. Had to shoot most of these images from my car.
Back to work…you’re not missing anything down the beach today.
For the next 3-4 days you won’t find much to surf. Looks seriously small. Sorry.

Hello

Pretty special morning down the beach. OK it’s not pumping but the sunshine is back and everyone is pretty happy about it.
Waves broke around waist to chest high. It’s inconsistent.  Winds were NW offshore and the water felt like 16 or 17 degrees.
The great news is that we should hit 23 degrees on the land today – that’s amazing.
Random information that you might find interesting:

A man just died following a shark at Byron Bay today (11am). Story on SMH
Big Dimitri (the Russian), a Bondi icon was seriously injured on Saturday at 2pm when the rope he was climbing broke at Ben Buckler point. You probably saw the helicopters. More This is the second time this year Dimitri has fallen from the big cliff. In Jan 2014 he was oggling a topless girl and lost his concentration and fell – breaking both his legs. More
The world famous Bills restaurant is opening up next week in the new Hub development in Bondi. That’ll be good.

Get Wet

After a few weeks of stormy mornings it’s great to see sun and clean waves. Been a while.
Bondi had a little peak with some decent rights. It’s from the ESE swell so plenty of options today. Anything with East swell will feed into the many bays of Sydney.
It’s offshore…hit it.
The weather will be much better this week. 23 degrees tomorrow which is pretty warm. Small waves all week long…
Enjoy.

Junkyard

I think we are all a lil’ over the rain. Maaaan it’s been stormy lately. The ocean is still agitated. Rogue double head high bombs broke at Bondi in a random fashion. It’s barely surfable. Pro surfers Teale Vanner and Chris Friend had a crack – but if they’re not finding joy – I’d say it would be hard work for us mere mortals.
It’s onshore and that will continue for days. Good time to bring out that conscientious-worker-side in you. You’re not really missing much down the beach.
It is Father’s Day this Sunday. Get him a book or a gift card from our gallery. He’ll love it. If you rock into our Bondi gallery wielding a Mastercard we will have a special offer for you. You’ll see. It’s worth it. Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach telephone 02 9130 7788. Hope you saw REAL LIVING mag with our Bondi headquarters in it.

Whip

It is still big, stormy and windy out there. We’re just too exposed here in Bondi. You need to travel today. I suggest deeply protected southern corners. Perhaps South Manly.
Tomorrow morning it may go offshore for a bit…this angry ocean is going to need a break from the winds to clean itself up.
I realise this week is all about the blokes (Father’s Day and all…) but if the girls want to get away go to Escape Haven who run surf, yoga retreats in places like Byron, Bali, Morocco and Portugal. Check it

Monsters

Everybody loves a rogue storm swell.
It’s huge out front. I saw sets in the 10 foot range. In my opinion, unsurfable. Ben Buckler may have the odd rideable monster from the deep. Bit of a novelty wave.
The southerly is hoooooooooooowwwling. It’s gale force (35-45 knots). Get your windsurfers out.
This isn’t Bodhi’s 50 year storm – but she’s a good one.
It’s Father’s Day this Sunday. Get the old boy something…here’s some ideas:

Thunder

Did you know that “Maroubra” is the Aboriginal word for place of thunder? Plenty of thunder down there yesterday. It was pumping. The leftovers weren’t too bad today, head high and super clean before the storm hit. Unfortunately if you are reading this update and haven’t already surfed – you missed it. Shows over.
This new south storm will bring a large swell, tomorrow is going to be huge (10 foot plus). Just one problem, gale force winds (40 knots) will flank this beast and corrupt any goodness. Batten down the hatches, bring the washing in…we’re in for a stormy start to spring.
Good time to get some work done :: uge

Cape Fun

Cape Solander (AKA Ours, AKA Cape Fear) is not often known for its ‘fun’ waves. Well…the Red Bull Cape Fear competition ran yesterday in not the biggest conditions I’ve seen out there…but it was still fun. Hope you watched it online. Was quite an amazing setup, which was whipped up in 4 days by the organisers.
The short period ESE swell dropped quite a bit more than expected on Saturday night. In the first heats there were still a few 6-8 foot bombs. Ryan Hipwood’s 1st wave was really sumpin’ – a full, true Cape nugget. The rest of the day was 4-5 footers which broke very close to the rock. Amazing line up with talented Hawaiians being dominated by the local crew. The Cape is a tricky wave, even just getting out is shifty – just ask Koby Abberton. Watch highlights reel here.
The great news is that Red Bull have agreed to run it again next year…let’s hope we get a monster swell for 2015. Like the one we had last month.
You all know we have had the best Mentawais trip of a lifetime this year. I am still buzzing from that trip. 2 million people have watched the drone footage from our 12 days in the islands. If you want to go, we went on Ratu Motu…the biggest and most luxurious boat out there. Trust me, it’s worth it, you’re worth it! Just look at it.
Today the waves are pumping. Hit it.
