Today is the last photo update for 2011. Yes, another digit ticks over and we’ll be taking a few weeks break in preparation for another big year, that’ll be Aquabumps’s 13th year in operation. Yes, lucky 13 – can you believe it. What started out as a muck around photo email between my mates (in the nineties) has grown into 40,000 daily readers (with another 36,000 on Facey). To be honest, I’d never thought it would be anything more than a hobby – but here we are…5,000 updates later.
1stly – thank you to all the readers (you) of this over enthusiastic beach photo blog. Some people still come up and say they’ve been reading this for 10 years solid (sorry about all the typos). You are the best.
2ndly – Thanks to the major sponsors of Aquabumps (Canon, Land Rover, Corona and Telstra). Their support means we can keep the updates free for you guys and enables us to do interesting new stuff! Cheers to all our advertisers as well.
3rdly – thanks to all the people that help Aquabumps – the gallery staff (Xtian, Gloria, Amanda, Claire, Big Steve, Loxy, Elliot), also Kelv the IT dude, Dan the Ecomm guy, Misc the bookie, Steve the IT ninja, Wifie the PR manager. A tonne of other people help us out on a sporadic basis (usually for free) – I won’t name them all or you will go to sleep. THANK YOU!
Here is my selection of the best 50 images from 2011. Hope you enjoy them and have a fantastic Christmas and New Year. It looks like we might have some swell for the break – dang!
The gallery will be open for the next few weeks – we just won’t be updating the blog.

PS – I am going to Hawaii, so you will be seeing big waves next Jan.

This time of year you’ve probably ran out of puff looking forward gorging yourself on mamas xmas cookin’ and taking a break. I think the swell is in the same boat – lacking…weak, waist high waves broke this morning without any grunt. The high tide was so full I thought most lumps weren’t even gonna break. It could be worse, it could be raining…
Hang on, it just started pouring as I write this. At least the garden is looking good and your car is salt-free.
Good news – Xmas day should be mostly fine with 26 degrees. We may even have some Christmas swell! Hooray!
It is not too late. Nope. You can still come into the Aquabumps Gallery and we have plenty of Christmas present fodder. We are open 10-6 every day until Christmas. Rock on in.

You can surf in our ‘hood today. It’s small, waist to shoulder high, fat on the early tide, but rideable in the sunshine. Yes, I said sunshine. Salubrious day outside, go soak it up. Kinda strange but cool light this morning….
It’s not too late…

Buenos dias

The good old southerly is blowing early at 20 knots. That doesn’t make for great surfing. The sky was deep tones of grey, sometimes even sprinkling. Maybe the odd down pour today…
It’s 1 foot. Sorry I mean 2 foot, flimsy, weak and a little wobbly with some morning junk on it. Good if you’re just starting out in the sport of surfing. The swell source is NE, now that’s no good for Bondi.
The south swell comes back tomorrow – so we should see an improvement then.
The Anchor
8 is a lucky number for the Chinese. At 8 Campbell Parade Bondi a few mates have opened a bar and restaurant. Think margaritas, seafood and tequila. It’s called The Anchor and has been packed since the doors opened a few weeks ago. It’s the old Hungry Czech, yeah that’s right, just under Noah’s Backpackers. It’s small ‘n’ local and open quite late (1am). I’d encourage you to drop by this summer…

The Sydney Eye

MMM, another grey day here in Sydney. Looks like we’re going for a record… I can hear the pitta-patter on the tin roof now as yet another squall passes by. The surf looks small and junkie this morning – the beach relatively empty. Bondi not great, Bronte had a few on offer – but it wasn’t as good as local Caleb Reid made it look in these photos shot around 7am. No one surfs Bronte better. You or I would take off, crack a lucky frontside stab and then flap around in the white water.
The Eye
With all the rain and average surf conditions lately I ventured away from the coast (only for a short while – don’t worry) and was lucky enough to shoot from the new Sydney Tower Eye. It’s a great vantage point to shoot Sydney as its 309 metres high – that’s double the Harbour Bridge! It’s also the first place in Sydney to see the sunrise. You can even see Bondi from up there. Below are some shots from my walk around the tower…you can do the same sky walk that I did – safely chained to a rail so you don’t blow off. Have a look

Breeze

Funny old week… Most days have been chest to head high (weak), some bigger ones yesterday (4-6). The winds have been up early most days though, puttin’ loads of chop-flop on them faces. Bronte, with its almighty huge chunk of rock at the south end is probably the pick – hiding from the wind. Bondi has been diabolical, exposed and doing nuttin’. This weekend looks to have small swell, you’ll be riding head high sets as the northerly blows your hair back. It will rain a little today, maybe a tad more tomorrow and then some on Sunday. Oh Monday it will definitely rain, like Tuesday and then more on Wednesday – wow, that sounds all a bit too depressing. Is this summer?
You won’t believe it but the Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend 10am to 6pm. Come in and do your Christmas shopping, this is your last weekend to do so! Or buy a gift card online and we’ll post it out in a fancy card and package.
Have a good day, :: uge

chunk

There is swell, quite a chunky one and from the south, but it’s still not doing it. C’mon.
It’s 4-5 foot, a tad too big for the banks at Bondi to handle. The flanking south winds seem to be causing havoc as well….there is plenty of junky chop out there.
Bondi had a couple of guys, they didn’t get much.
Bronte had a handful, they got some, wobbly ones…worth getting wet for.
Ok, Xmas is 10 days away and you have present anxiety. We can help. If you order a Aquabumps Book today online, we will NEXT DAY POST it so most main city areas will have it tomorrow. Yep tomorrow. You can have a different shipping address to billing (whoa), so we can just send it directly to your friends and family – or even clients. Too easy! Otherwise if you have time, we have plenty of stock, frames, books all under the Aquabumps gallery roof in Bondi. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach.

Fools Gold

Fresh serve of south swell is in town, it’s quite big too – like 4-5 foot, but it just doesn’t seem to want to do it. Bronte kinda had a wobbly right, Bondi was messy and well…not great…I think you need to head to the other side of the bridge, something with loads of southerly protection. High tide is 11:30am, low tide is 5pm. We had a brief moment of sunshine this morning. Wasn’t that nice. Didn’t last long. Still the weather remains in the early 20’s and rain is on the radar – not very typical for this time of year.

hello

In the 1 hour of roaming the beaches of the east I took 4 photos. That’s odd (I normally shoot around 60). Barely anyone surfing the 2 footers on offer, the sky was dark grey and generally another quiet onshore beach day.
Bondi was looking horrible with the southerly tearing it apart @ 25 knots – no one out. Bronte had a lil’ sumpin’…a bump that you could ride. Didn’t see anything else.
Go windsurfing – that looks like more fun today. Windy tomorrow too!
Not long until Christmas. 12 days to be exact. And guess what – our gallery is open! 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW T91307788. If you’re wondering what to give all your clients – our book? We’ve got plenty.

biblical

Yesterday was an amazing day. Biblical. The day started with perfect sunshine, great waves and then by 1pm the raging southerly front rolled in from out to sea – and I don’t think it’s stopped raining or blowing since.
Wow. It was one of the most intense storms I’ve seen.
Today – well, in comparison, it’s boring. The waves are onshore mush, I saw one guy, a Chinese tourist fully dressed trying to go for a swim (not recommended) – but that was about it down there this morning. I didn’t even shoot as sticking a lens out of the car window with pelting rain ain’t much fun.
Byron Bay wonder Kieren Perrow won big Pipe yesterday. Insert Clap.
The Reef” a mash up of talented men – Jon Frank, Richard Tognetti and Mick Sowry travelled from Darwin to Perth this year, making music, movies and surfing along the way to form a mixed media performance. Tickets on sale tomorrow, 1 show only at the Sydney Opera House. Will be good.
The Aquabumps gallery is open today. Good thing about this rain is you’ll probably get a park right out the front. Telephone 02 9130 7788 or email us any Christmas Present questions. We are open until 6pm every day.

re-ignite

Sorry about the slightly late update, been watching 12 foot bombs at the Hawaiian Pipe Masters, Would you paddle out there?
Last night before I closed my eyes I checked the weather and it said “Showers in the morning, clearing”. Couldn’t be any further from the truth.
Clear skies, 24 degrees, blue water, chest high waves and tight wolf pack of diverse surfing skill burning each other. Just another day down at Bondi.
On the weekend there is a shoulder high ENE swell coming. Nothing great, it also looks like it could rain all weekend. Yay – it’s been at least 12 hours since the last down pour. Go shopping.
Aquabumps Xmas Orders Close Sunday

Damp

A friend told me that this rainy crud weather is here to stay for all of December and January. I asked the same friend if they can pick the lotto numbers for this weekend as I’d like to buy a boat, ok maybe just a dinghy.
I’d agree and say it’s going to rain until next Wednesday. Fortunately there are waves, 2-3 footish. But these morning high tides are making it pretty fat.
The Hawaii Banzai Pipe Masters looks like it will kick off on the 8th December with a big swell hitting (remember they are a day behind). Webby
If you are bored at work, I thought this little video was well made. A little long (grab a cuppa) with some average surfing…but the scenery is magical
With all this rain I am sure you don’t feel like being outside and Christmas shopping. Shop online! Get a book from us, or maybe a gift card, or a little piece from the gallery.

Overflow

Hi. There’s waves around this morning but it’s full as a boot with a 7am high tide.
You can catch a wave, but don’t expect much more than a few cutbacks and flaps trying to stay on it.
The lower tide will reveal the goods.
SE swell, 3 ft, S/SE winds 5-10 knots then swinging Easterly by midday 10 – 15 knots (that’s not good).
High tide 7am and 7pm. Low tide 1:30pm. Water temp 19-20. Forecast – smaller! Boo!
Our buddies at WASP bags are offering Aquabumps readers 10 bucks off their range of waterproof bags. See

Fatty

I am not going to complain about the winter-like weather conditions we have in Sydney at the moment. Beltin’ summer is just around the corner, I just know it, so this is a good time to get some work done…
We have some waves worth talking about this morning. It’s 3 foot – nice and clean with a gentle SW wind. The 6am high tide was spoiling things – filling up the bays – making waves fat and sluggish. Towards the lower tides you should see a bit of lip.
If you want to give Aquabumps artworks away for Christmas, you have 5 days left to order them (Deadline Sunday 11th December). You can order online, in the gallery or on the phone. We’re talking custom orders, as we have hundreds of other frames in stock that you can just rock in and grab on the spot. If you want books, order them online – we have plenty and usually they arrive next day (Sydney). If you can’t decide on which artworks, the best way is gift vouchers to our gallery – they come in a real pretty little package and are valid for 12 months. If you have questions contact us or phone 02 9130 7788 – better still, just roll into the gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW Australia.

Mondayitis

The clouds are smothering and the beach is deserted – perfecto – seeing there was a 3-4 foot wave on this morning. 8am the wind blew southerly 20 odd knots, but that should lighten up during the day. If you don’t mind a bit of chop hopping – today is your day. Should be SW offshore tomorrow (fingers crossed).
Looks like the Swiss Grand deck is going to be a hive of activity at the end of this year…NYE and NYD at Cream Tangerine – read more.
Aquabumps Gallery is open today 10-6. Come have a look.

The southerly is still howling and making a mess of anything resembling a wave this morning.
If you’re surfing today, you need to get a job. 2-3 foot wind slush wasn’t enough to get me in the water.
It’s cooler today. Top of 20 degrees. Rain will come and go, I hope the wind goes soon and summer arrives.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend (no kiddin’, just like the past 8 years). We’re behind the Bondi Hotel, next door to the TAB and Video shop. All you need on 1 block in Bondi.

TRON

Today is the 1st day of summer – coulda fooled me. The southerlies have rolled into town and temperatures are back into the 15-20 range. The SE wind is howling 30 knots and the bay is full of white caps and sloshy foam. I didn’t see a single surfer out this morning – now that is saying something. Hopefully when it all dies back there will be some clean fun little waves to surf.
Last night was quite something down at Bondi. Fireworks, night surfing in Tron suits with LED surfboards that glow. Wow, only in Bondi. I swam out there to snap some shots of the ‘Tron’ surfers of the night. No we didn’t see any sharks (seems to be a frequently asked question after swimming at Bondi for 1.5 hrs in the night)
