Oh man it’s so windy down there. It’s howling. I’m still removing sand particles from every nook.
There is barely any surf to speak of at Bondi. I am sure East facing beaches will be a little more entertaining. You will need to hide from the 25 knots of southerly though. Swell will come up strong overnight and surprise you tomorrow.
It’s ooorn. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is now on live! This event hasn’t run since 2009 and needs 20 foot waves.
Today Samsung are now taking pre-orders for the new Galaxy S7 Edge phones. I’m upgrading from the S6 and pumped! Order
Well, we are in for some heat today. All 38 degrees of it. That’s some big digits for the last week of Summer. It will be the hottest day for this time of year in 12 years.
Y’know what? I say tools down. Hit the beach. Put the outta-office on. You deserve it. I’m sure all those emails can wait.
That NE swell didn’t really kick it. I just saw 2-3 foot windswell dribbles today.
Mick Fanning had a very rough 2015. He’s taking some time off full time competition to rebuild. Read
See you down there later :: uge
It looks like some of that cyclone Winston swell has started feeding into Sydney. I have to say, I was expecting more, earlier. But I am sure it will come this weekend. You wait until you see Saturday here in Sydney – it’s gonna be huge!
That same Winston storm has been causing massive damage in Fiji. You can donate here to help the poor people of Fiji.
Nice day in Sydney today, just perfect.
Everyone is eagerly awaiting a swell increase. It’s due any minute now. Some people are getting on flights to Queensland, some taking days off work. It’s swell from the North…so it should light up some different beaches.
At 7am, not much had arrived.
It should be a fun 3 foot for the rest of the week (after it arrives) – but much bigger on the weekend.
30 banging degrees today beach lovers!
I coulda swam for hours this morning. I know I keep banging on about how nice the water is – but it’s really sumpin special. So warm! In the past few years I’ve been in Hawaii at this time of year…so I guess I’m really enjoying being at home in these choice conditions.
Waves – 2 foot East swell. There were a few but the 9am high tide was killing it.
Swell – plenty coming. A entire week of ENE swell followed by a big kuhuna on Sunday.
Check out this film of Ando roaming this big island. Some amazing waves and effortless surfing. I really enjoyed it.
The ocean has calmed down now. It’s amazing how much it dropped overnight. Yesterday’s boom town has been downgraded to some neat little 3-4 footers. It’s much more manageable and most beaches will be back in business. There was some really big sets yesterday – I reckon the odd 10 footer!
After a very dark and gloomy morning the sunshine is now out (11am) and winds gone NE. Ah yes, a typical summers day. Go enjoy it.
We have a shop, yep. It’s open every day 10am to 6pm. It’s in Bondi and is an old mechanics yard. We’ve been open for 12 years. Yep, 12! It employs lots of people (9 to be precise). Come see these images in their full glory, blown up big on the walls. Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSw 2026 Telephone 02 9130 7788. We ship interstate and globally.
Oh…and we’re still looking for a new staff member to work our own print room. We print in house and need help. Read this and follow the instructions to submit your CV.
Some real beef out there today. Sets are tipping over 8 foot and pounding. Leave the fishes and mals at home, grab a shorty and find somewhere that is holding big surf.
The swell will peak this arvo. It’s clean and offshore.
Seeyouse :: uge
She sure is windy down there this morning. Nearly blew the camera right out of my hands.
We’ve got a southerly dominating Sydney at the moment. Fortunately this will kick up the swell tonight. Right now it looked like one huge mess down there. Seek protected southerly corners.
G’day. Nice morning. Didn’t last long as the onshores came in early (9am).
We’ve got pleasant 1-3 footers of ENE swell that will continue grow for the next coupla.
Go sample the current bath-like conditions out there. It’s a treat.
Well that was on helluva beach weekend in Sydney. Bondi was jammed with people. The weather was sensational! The waves, well, not so sensational.
You might find this hard to believe…but…Bronwyn Bishop and myself are not the only people that love flying in helicopters. It was quite ridiculous how many choppers were circling our little bay all weekend. I have never seen so many in my 9 years of aerial photography – there was even a queue to get into Bondi and shoot. It’s now a tourist activity. Just for the record, I was not flying or shooting on the weekend. It’s a lil’ frustrating when a chopper rolls in Bondi and we get several noise complaints – when I am not even in the air. I’ve only done a couple of flights this summer. So hey, not me! OK, glad we got that sorted.
I am glad to report…I’ve got some exciting new ideas for this year’s shooting. Yes, new ideas! You’ll see. Shooting in Rio in a couple of weeks.
Swell coming. Standby.
Good morning. Guten morgen. Buongiorno. 早上好
Fine looking morning outside. Finally the sun broke free of the smothering morning clouds. There is a small East swell on offer. Beaches facing that direction will have a little chest to head high wave this morning. Some sweet little peaks around the ‘hood. Nice and glassy with little wind.
Pretty small waves all weekend. That’s OK as it’s Valentines Day on Sunday and you are probably getting all romantic (6 pack of beer + watching footie). We have plenty of little gift ideas in the #aquabumpsgallery. Drop in. 10am to 6pm all weekend long. Telephone 02 9130 7788
Around 50,000 read this daily thing that I’ve now been doing for 17 years. A lot of our readers are overseas. A lot are in the northern hemisphere where it’s freezing cold right now. For some it’s a life line…for others it’s a love/hate thing…some get it and have no idea how they landed here but love pretty pictures. For those in a office cubicle and it’s snowing outside – well – it’s real nice right here, right now. And these pics will rub it in a lil’. You should be here!
The water is special. 24 degrees.
There are small and fun waves. Big crowds.
The Eddie was canceled this morning due to lack of swell. Part of me is very relieved as I am not over there. The aggressive storm pulled away from the islands at the last minute dropping swell heights. Read
P.S. Point Break is showing at the Bondi Open Air Cinema tomorrow night (12 Feb). I hear there is some pretty amazing scenes from Chopes in it. Go
It’s that time of the year where I’m beltin’ out that word – salubrious! The water conditions are just ridiculous. I’m talking 24-25 degrees and silky smooth this a.m. Good underwater vis as well.
There’s a lil’ wave chuggin’ into the bay. It’s quite weak, flimsy and 2 foot.
Loads of people down the beach this morning with huge smiles. It’s a great time of year to be on the beach.
Valentines Day is this Sunday. So pen this down fellas. Visit Floreat Floral’s website, pick a bunch and get it delivered between 8am and 3pm on Sunday. Gain massive brownie points. Call 0417 894 786 or do it all online here. They’re based in the East and very good.
The doom and gloom has arrived into Bondi this morning. The skies dark and the winds onshore…waves, well, they’re a tiny knee to waist high. Can you surf it? Yep, just lower your expectations a little and ride something fat.
Good news – it will clear and be sunny this afternoon.
The water is warm like a bath. Go see.
2016 is the first year in ages we’re not going to Hawaii. Don’t wanna talk about it. Been going 7 winters in a row. Of course this is the year that the Eddie is running and Pipe has been lighting up daily. Green light. Sirens ringing. It’s going down on Wednesday Hawaiian time (Thursday here). More
This is what my swell alert said from Hawaii:
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10
TIME: 2 pm
PRIMARY SWELL: 41.7ft at 18s NW (327)
SECONDARY SWELL: 0.4ft at 7.6s NNE (15)
WIND: 10kts NE (47)
I reckon that’s big enough to put white wash in our old back yard. Guttered.
It’s one of those glorious, A Class Sydney beach days. It’s not too hot (27) and there’s a gentle onshore breeze to keep you cool. The beach is busy but not rammed.
At sunrise the surf was really good. Head high, clean with early SW winds. Only a handful of lucky ones on it.
It’s onshore now, but still surfable.
Mostly good weather all week – see you down the beach perhaps?
Like every other day I woke and went straight down the beach. It looked, well, um…pretty ordinary in every respect. OK. The swell came up (3-4ft)…but she looked junkie/wind affected. The grey clouds made it very gloomy and the sand was relatively empty – apart from Fluoro Friday gang.
I’ve been wondering what to write about today, my 6,000+th post, drinking java and google earthing secret surf breaks…and I still haven’t come up with anything interesting. What to do?
Love birds – it’s Valentines Day on the 14th Feb. Get yourself in the good books and buy your partner some Aquabumps loot. Buy a book online today and I will write a nice little warm’n’fuzzy message on the inside cover just for kicks. Ya know, something like you’re unreal, very good looking and that they’re real lucky and all…that you should let them surf more…
Bondi Beach looked a little grim this morning. The rain kicked in and it was dark…super dark. Finally some waves are breaking. 2 footish and should come up during the day. A little wonky though. It will be big tomorrow. I decided to cancel shooting and post some recent stuff shot around Bondi.
You’ve probably heard the news of Big Wave Dave. The local identity will be missed around Bondi Beach in and out of the surf. So very sad. Condolences to all his friends and family. To celebrate this great man’s life there will be a mass paddle out at Bondi Wed 10th Feb at 1pm (North Bondi). If you don’t want to paddle out – you can view it all from North Bondi RSL. For anyone showing up on the day, black is out of the equation. Colourful dress mandatory. RIP big fella.
Out :: uge
P.S. Did you know there’s a brand new fancy hotel in Bondi…? Yep…QT hotel Bondi. Check it.
If you don’t go for a swim in the ocean today – you are really missing out. The water is an incredible 25 degrees in Sydney today. It’s amazing. I coulda stayed out there for hours this morning. It’s like a bath. No rubber required.
Waves – tiny. Sun – on turbo.
Everyone is pretty fit around here. Everyone is into their fitness. ClassPass is a new website that allows you to mix up your fitness routines at different fitness providers under one subscription. You know, do a Yoga sess here, a Pilates there then go for a kayak, all under 1 membership. Mixing it up so you don’t get bored. Good idea me thinks. Try it.
Spent a bit of time lurking around Bronte pool this morning. That’s gotta be the most photographed ocean pool in Australia behind Icebergs. It’s one helluva busy place at sunrise. If it we were in Italy they’d put a boom gate and charge you $25 bucks to look at it for 2 minutes. People love it!
Surf – yeah….nah…yeah. Ok, little bump in swell with waist to chest high sets. Bondi is lacking banks so it wasn’t doing much.
Big swell coming at the end of the week.
Enjoy the sunshine.
