Today I took the whip for a spin around the local beaches hunting inspiration. One thing struck me that was incredible…there is barely a parking space to be found at all our beaches. I look at my watch, 5:55am, and everyone is up early doing something – before I’ve even got down there. Yeah I know, Sculptures is on…and people are coming in from far and wide, but she’s real busy in the mornings in general. I think that’s pretty unique to Sydney. We are all insomniacs or we all go to bed at 9 o’clock.
Ok back to the facts. A South East swell is producing head high waves. It looks fun and wonky. Do it.
The SURFAID cup is on tomorrow and looks like it will be moved from Manly to Curl Curl. Come watch the Aquabumps team surf to victory!
BOOTCAMP 4 BUSHFIRES…help raise funds for the devastating NSW Bushfires tomorrow down at North Bondi 6am to 7am. Entry/Donation is $20. Blake Worrall-Thompson will be running the show.
My favourite house in Bondi sold for 15 million. Oh boy I’d do anything for that crib! What a view…could shoot right off the balcony. View
So you’ve been watching the TV show “The Bachelor” lately…noticed the boardies Tim’s been wearing? Yeah they’re the Aquabumps/Speedo boardies. You too can look like Tim – get the boardies and the rig will follow.

Hola! Not the most memorable morning down the beach. For a while there the light was decent but faded to grey quite fast. The waves scored a 3/10. 2-3 foot and very sloppy. Patchy rain about the traps…a good day to do something else, maybe go to work.
If you are wondering why our local area is filled with humans – yep – it is that time of year again, Sculpture by the Sea has just begun.
A clever, young, active Bondi couple, Noa and Bryan, have created a new premium fitness fashion range that has just launched. It is called – Vie Active. I look great in their leopard skin tights, but they look better on my wife…to kick it all off they are offering a whopping 20% off all orders for Aquabumps readers. Just enter “Aquabumps20” in the final stages of checkout online

It was all nice and glassy down the beach this morning. A fog entered the bay around 7:00am and there was a cruisy, well-formed right hander tucked away in the Icebergs corner (with only 3 on it). I swam out there and snapped a few. It was real nice.
By 12pm it will blow a gale. 30 knots of southerly heading our way and that will hopefully generate some swell for the rest of the week.
The Surfaid cup is this Friday and donations close tomorrow. C’mon honks, how about supporting our Aquabumps team and Surfaid by shedding some small change? We’re $3,600 off from reaching our goal. $20 bucks will do it…ok $50 is better…$100 and we’re best mates…$1000 and you will reach legendary status. Support Us

1 Hit Wonder

Yesterday was pumping (8ft). I saw an incredible south swell roar into town as I pushed the pram around. Wow. It was so clean, so perfect, so south, so ridiculously good looking. One of the better days of the year.
This morning I got a little bit excited and woke at 4:30am to go shoot some slabs down south…thinking it will be oooorn.
It wasn’t.
The swell died and is now only 3 foot and the winds had some east meaning it was a bit messing and onshorey. Mission was aborted mid-journey.
Bit like a Britney Spears hit…the joy only lasted 24 hours. Shows over and my lenses didn’t see the light of day.
Oh well…there is something heading our way this Friday.

Oh man it is such a nice day outside and we’ve got swell to boot!
A south swell is in town, it is 3-4 foot…Bondi is loving it. This morning the tide was low, so plenty of close outs.
Somewhere, somewhere out of town, on a quiet south facing beach would be cranking. I think you should split from work and go for a long drive to score. You deserve it – you’re employee of the month! Congratulations.
Now…the forecast this weekend is healthy surf wise. South swell both days and offshore. Wow.
Have a great day : : u g e

Some mornings it can be a punish peeling out of bed before the sun rises. You’d think after 15 years of daily dawn photography I’d have it down. I’m human. I need a java hit to switch the brain into gear and steer me in the general direction of the beach.
As I rolled down the street and saw the beach at 5:50am, it looked pretty stunning with bright red clouds over Benny’s. Lucky aren’t we? Worth the pain of an early rise. After a few postcard-tripod shots I decided to swim’n’shoot as the waves looked nice. It’s a new south swell and Bondi is drawing every inch. The rips are manic but the waves were fantastic. I reckon this incoming tide will reveal more goodness. See you out there.

Hola! The waves looked a little confused this morning. Perhaps it was a mixture of NE and south swells and a low tide. I didn’t really see anything worth riding, but try again on the 11:40am high tide (soon!).
Bondi is full of rips at the moment. They’re on turbo and it’s quite dangerous for swimming. Stick to the flags.
Today it’s gonna be hot in the jungle ese! Bang on 35 degrees. I hope the winds don’t crank too much for our fire fighters.
Next weekend Bondi’s surfing gods from the 80s and 90s will be in town to wind back the clock.
On Saturday 2nd of November The Beach Road Hotel Single Fin Classic will feature Cheyne Horan and Richard Cram ripping it up in competition on pre-1986 single fin surfboards. A number of things make the Beach Road Hotel Single Fin Classic a stand out event: As well as being the biggest surfing event in Bondi it’s a truly unique cultural event, which fuses grass roots surfing, good vibes, and bad dancing (surfers must dance before they surf for extra points). It’s not sponsored by a drink company or a video game maker, and if you want to surf in it just go to: www.bondiboardriders.com for details. Alternatively come and enjoy a day on the hill. All welcome.
Few random pics in today’s update (not all shot today). Was unhappy with my morning catch.
Until tomorrow….adios :: ugios

The conditions flipped and it seems most Bondi surfers headed to Maroubra this morning to reap the benefits.
Good move if you did. Some fun ones out there in a weak NE wind swell. I saw a wave break overhead high! Just one.
The winds are quite strong and from the SW. Protected corners essential.

It’s going to be another tough day for our brave fire-fighters as the mercury creeps up to 31 degrees. I can’t stop thinking about all those poor people that lost their homes and property. I gotta say though, all this smoke in the air has been creating some unique photo opportunities around Sydney. The sun is transforming into fluorescent pinks at sunset and sunrises are looking just like an Endless Summer poster.
The waves have dwindled and we now have a small NE swell. It’s not worth much discussion.
Some useful(less) information:

Messina has opened on Hall Street. Best Gelato in the world, that is if you can fight 100 people to get to the front of the counter
Miss Antarctica (more commonly known at Charlotte Piho) is not officially Miss Antarctica. I just named her that as she doesn’t wear wetsuits in the deep doldrums of winter. I’ve seen her surf for 2 hours on freezing mornings. See this post
Like Aquabumps? If you’ve been enjoying our free service for many years now I would REALLY appreciate your support of our SURFAID Surf Team. SURFAID is an amazing charity that help the poor people of remote Indonesia – where the surf cranks and most of you have visited. Their main fundraiser is coming up and we call on you for 20 bucks, 200 bucks or even a grand. C’mon, you can do it you good thing. Donate here by sponsoring our Aquabumps SURFAID Team. We won last year and haven’t stopped training for the event.
Someone has spelt Tamarama wrong on the Tama SLSC. Oh boy, that cracked me up this morning. (Velocity Air Sign)

Sadly New South Wales is being ravaged by 100 wild bush fires. Say a little prayer for those families who’ve lost homes. The skies were filled with smoke last night and asthmatics will find it hard to breathe. Last night was very unique down at Bondi with all this smoke, some of the strangest light I’ve seen. The smoke was acting like a trippy lens filter creating some good shooting fodder.
Fortunately today’s weather conditions are much better suited to fire fighting – hats off to all those involved.
With the today’s cooler weather comes a new south swell. It’s 3-4 foot and wobbly yet fun. I reckon it will get better as the day cleans it up.
Have a great weekend : : u g e

Yesterday’s swell has run out of gas and we’re back in Dribbleland. It’s micro and best suited to long boarding and newbies to the sport like my new son Spike (Ok maybe we had better wait a year or two as he’s only 2 weeks old). The water is 10 out of 10 though. Just go swim (mandatory), especially seeing it’s going to hit 34 degrees today. Why would you live anywhere else?

It was an all-star cast down at Bondi Beach this morning. Pamatatua Davies, Sam Mac, Brett Anderson, Ian Wallace, The Gonz, Brucey Stafford, Sam Jackson… hell even Tom Bird paddled out for the early.
There’s waves around head high. The banks aren’t that great but there is a rip bowl in the middle of the beach worth surfing – that’s if you don’t get sucked out to sea in between sets.
If you live around here you’ll know Vix. Everyone knows Vix. She’s down the beach every day training people. She’s fit. Super fit. She’s also running a 6 week bikini body challenge that starts early next month, just in time to get your summer rig on. Call the Vix’s rig hotline 0403 111 188 to book and get all the mum’s talking down at the North Bondi kiddie pool.

Good times to be had down the beach, the sunshine is back with plenty of south swell. Today I chose to shoot Maroubra as the banks at Bondi were a little patchy, plenty of waves in the North corner (with a big crew to match). I reckon Bondi was bigger though – with some sets overhead high.
One of our gallery artworks is featuring in Channel 10’s new soapie “Wonderland”. The first person to tell me what the name of the artwork is and write it here in the comments will win an Aquabumps Book (Australian readers only). Here’s the tip – it is a shot of wave.

You could not get more different days…that’s today and yesterday. Sydney’s weather moods are so Bi-Polar. Yesterday was a sweltering hottie – bit like sitting in the oven. Now this morning it’s raining, cool, onshore and the beach is deserted. Are we in the same country?
Swell is up, chest to head high onshore goodness. Quality is questionable with the onshore breezes making a mess.
Movember is approaching and the hairy upper lips will be plentiful. There is going to be a Movember Expression Session during the Single Fin Classic down at Bondi this year on Saturday Movember 2nd. More info just head down here.
The great news is that there will be waves to surf for the next few days!

Today is shaping up to be the hottest day ever. Ok, maybe just the hottest day in October, but it’s still hot. By the time you get this email it will be 30 degrees. Then by the time you head out for lunch (or wag work and split for the beach) it will be a banging 39 degrees. That’s incredible for this time of year. There is only one place to be kids, that’s waist deep in the ocean.
The surf is not breaking any records today. Two peaks working down at Bondi with knee to creeping up your thigh style waves. Logs, beginners, tire tubes, body surfing, snorkelling…all good options.
If the heat is all too much for you, the Aquabumps Gallery has the best air conditioning system in the southern hemi…come have a look.

This morning I dug deep into the camera cupboard and pulled out my first lens – the 15mm Canon F2.8 Fisheye. For about 8 years it was my only lens to shoot in the water with. That’s all I could afford. It’s all hacked up now, the auto focus button is missing and Dave Kelly sawed off the protecting lens rims. It looks like something out of Mad Max. Nonetheless it still works and has great optics.
I’ve got a love/hate relationship with this lens. I haven’t used it in years for few reasons…the GoPro revolution saturated photosphere with billions of wide angle action surfing shots…Clarkie Baby Little added a few more million to the pile…oh and it can be tortuous to shoot with mainly because it’s so wide angle the subjects have to be right under your nose. That’s ok on a little consistent hollow reef break – but sometimes beachie work can consist of swimming for hours without a single decent shot. But…for capturing a fast action moment… I can put you right in the water with the surfer seeing what they see…even from your office desks.
So here’s the fruits of a glorious morning swim (with my buddy the fisheye) at Maroubra beach with fun little chest high peaks.
What a (beach) day.

It was quite a big weekend around here. Bondi was packed on Saturday and the Roosters fans have been going berserk over their big win.
The beach was quiet today and there are a few fun little rights towards the middle of the beach. My call is 5/10. Nothing worth racing down for.
Pro Surfing News: Mick Eugene Fanning won in France over the weekend and is on top of the ladder with Kelly Slater in 2nd. Hawaiian lass Clarissa Mooore has taken out the women’s World Championship title in Portugal over the weekend also.
Wednesday and Thursday look like amazing beach days. 34 degrees forecasted for Thursday – what tha!

All beaches have a specialised set of ingredients that the make for good surfing. For Bondi, for me, it’s a slight onshore day, sunshine and south swell with 3-4 footers. Just like today. There’s a little left rip bowl at second ramp that looks like fun. I reckon the onshores give it a little push and makes it a bit ‘lippy’.
It is a lot cooler today. 21.
What do you guys think of the new North Bondi SLSC? Comment
Hey don’t forget the Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend, like it has been for 9 years, 10am to 6pm 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach Telephone 9130 7788. Our new gallery is pretty slick…you’ll see when you get down here.

Damn flat down at ‘The Pond’ this morning. AKA Pond-I (thanks Evan). The ocean was exhausted by yesterday’s howling winds and there wasn’t a ripple to ride this morning at 6am.
Fortunately this flatness will be short lived as a new south swell kicks into gear – just about now (I look at my watch and see 2pm – yes, these reports are getting out late).
I see waves until Sunday…and good ones tomorrow morning, that’s if the wind doesn’t mess things up.
Our Aquabumps/Speedo boardies are in store now for the 3rd season…these are my fav…. super comfortable in the water with space-age stretchy material.

Sorry about the radio silence over the past couple of days. I’m back online now (call off the search party)…and what stunning conditions I’ve got to report.
Perfect sunshine and a fresh swell with 2-3 footers. The beach is packed, schoolies have taken over, and it’s a damn fine beach day. Do it!
Yep…it’s true…overnight another Bondi grommet was born and his name is Spike, my No.2. He was born at sunset last night and what incredible dusk colours welcomed him into this world. I think it’s a sign. A sign he’ll pick up his father’s tools of the trade and be a walking Cyclops lens man like me. No pressure of course. Being an accountant is fine with me too!
I also have another massive announcement…Aquabumps has joined forces with the almighty Audi Australia team and Audi Centre Sydney to become our exclusive car partner. Our corporate partners are very important to Aquabumps. They give us the support to keep these daily photo updates free for you all and allow us to do really cool stuff…stuff that would be out of a bloggers reach like chartering helicopters and road trips to exotic lands…all to keep you happily entertained behind your office desk.
Enough excitement for 24 hours. I’ll sleep under a palm tree now.
