In our endless pursuit of coastline and curry, today’s post comes to you from the sunny southwest of Sri Lanka — Weligama and neighbouring Midigama. It’s technically offseason here, so the surf line-up is pretty deserted…but there’s still a wave on offer if you’re keen. It’s a bit wonky, but clean at first light. Peak season for this coast is Nov–Feb, when the sandbanks clean up, the winds behave, and the rhythm of the ocean gets dialled in.
Weligama translates to “sandy village” — and that’s exactly what it is. Beginner heaven. Long, cruisy peelers, soft landings, plenty of boards for hire, and beach bars for the post-surf feast. If you’re after some action, there’s nightlife, great coffee, and loads of solid eats tucked in backstreets and laneways.
Don’t worry, we’re heading east to Arugam Bay mid-week — so stay tuned for more from our Sri Lankan road trip where the surf season is in it’s prime.
And yes, tourists are coming back here big time. After years of setbacks — civil war, COVID lockdowns, the 2022 economoic meltdown — Sri Lanka’s shining again. My first impression? Wow. Stunning beaches, super modern highways (seriously), friendly locals, and next-level food (I love curry, so I’m biased). Feels a bit like old Bali — pre-bucket bars and traffic jams — back when Kuta was sleepy and raw.
If you’ve got any favourite Sri Lankan spots, drop ’em in the comments — I’m getting bombarded with tip as Aussies love this place.
Big shoutout to the crew at The Perfect Wave Travel Company who’ve dialled in this trip for us — not just surf, but the full Sri Lankan experience. Think waterfalls, safaris, tea country, tuk tuk chaos and curry feasts. They’ve wrangled together an epic itinerary for energetic lunatics like my family — and it’s been smooth sailing so far.

one of the of the owners studied in Melbourne many years ago with a friend of mine so we dropped by for lunch back in ~2019 or so, food was great, really loved the place, suspect you’ll enjoy the surfing side of things too (despite being a long time subscriber i’m quite far from being a surfer)
the old town down at Galle was lovely too, we got some amazing posters that we have hanging up in our loungeroom.
food wise… get yourself a kottu roti. and learn what “short eats” is. my god… so good.
Onya thanks JAYD
