Best of 2015

So here we are…the last post for 2015. What year…and I’m not just saying that.
That concludes our 16th year of operation and I’ve gotta thank my growing team, without them I wouldn’t be able to spend 3 months of the year travelling, shooting and being inspired. A lot of people work hard on keeping this ‘Bumps thing going…it’s not just me and my little hobby any more.
Thank you team:
The Royal BB, Tyson the big cheese, Rach the queen of El Toppo, Ang our blow-in backpacker, Gemma our legal eagle, Cat Miss Enthusiasm, Geran who I haven’t seen much lately cause she’s travelling, Maddie (she’s new, so no paying out), Eliza the bean counter, Cam our guy in suit and tie, Kelvin the tech wizard, Mad Max the grom who does all the jobs no one else will do.
Thank you major sponsors:
Audi, Samsung, Corona, Canon. These companies keep Aquabumps free for you to enjoy and allow me to do interesting stuff. Also special thanks to Aquatech water housings, O’Neill Wet suits, Campaign Monitor.
Signing off…and to finish the year, here’s some inspiration to make sure Santa doesn’t miss your house tonight – watch
Thanks for reading Aquabumps. Have a great Christmas and New Year.
Here are my best shots of 2015 (I think)…

P.S. the gallery is open until 6pm tonight!

Cease

Go outside, the rain has stopped. Toot toot!
I saw a few waves down the beach as well, true. 2-3 footers, bumpy and lumpy just how we like it here.
Sharks? Na…didn’t see any. Saw plenty of TV crews – funny.
People – pretty thin. Everyone’s on holidays and sleeping in or bailed out of town.
Our gallery is open 10am to 6pm today and tomorrow. We have plenty of things to grab off the shelves and stick under a tree.
See you soon,

Sharkies

I was down in the car park of Bondi thinking WOW, not much happening in waves or weather departments. It hasn’t stopped raining. In fact I’d call it one of the most mundane mornings of 2015! Well, then this happens. A 6 foot Bronze Whaler Shark was thrashing around South Bondi…in the rip. It was a having a jolly old time before knocking Dean Norburn off his board – yes – Mick Fanning style. After tackling Dean it had a look at the most tanned human in Australia – JJ Botella. Both local fellas freaked out and came ashore, unharmed. End of story. Dean’s now in the local newsagent buying lottery tickets and JJ is back in the solarium. All back to normal. At ease. So if you were wondering why all the TV choppers circling Bondi today – that’s why. Never a dull moment in 2026.
I shot 4 very un-inspirational photos today so I am running with aerial images shot on that 42 degree evening – remember?
If you ordered one of our books today before 3pm we will next day EXPRESS post it to you today. 80% of Australians will get that book tomozza. Check Auspost website to see if you will get it tomorrow in time for Chrissy?
Good day for shopping. Call us on 02 9130 7788 if you want stuff from our gallery. (We are closed only on Xmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years’ Day otherwise 10am to 6pm daily)

Bullet Points

Last’s night’s howling NE winds kicked up some windswell. You wouldn’t know it as Bondi faces south. Go hang with Blake at Maroubra and you will find something to surf (finally after a week of nothing).
The QT hotel in Bondi Beach final opens it’s doors today (in the old Swiss Grand). This is a big occasion. One of Australia’s most well known beaches actually has a hotel…yes, and a supermarket! Hard to believe I know.
I met Adriano De Souza when he was a teenager sleeping on Chilli’s sofa. The workhorse just got his 1st world title. I never forget shooting him at Whaley and thinking this kid’s unbelievable. He has been a force on the tour for years and works hard at it. Hard work pays!
You have been sent this link 100 times in the past 24 hours. Kelly Slater and some nerds have developed the most insane man made wave in the world. It blew my mind. Link

Chicas

The girls dominated South Bondi this morning. Barely a dude in sight. Not many waves either – t’was tiny! Nice day for it nonetheless.
Quite an emotional morning watching Pipe. Mick didn’t win the world title and stood strong in a very emotional time. He’s an inspirational human remaining composed is such a tragic time for him.
We do have a new world Champion, Adriano De Souza. Congrats.

Drying Out

How’s ya roof? Still there? Well, that was one hell of a storm yesterday huh? Flash flooding everywhere. I wish I owned that business that rents out those carpet dryers. Minted.
I have no shots from yesterdays storm. I was sitting deep in the back of our framing factory…preparing our Chrissy orders. The car got a beautiful wash though, looks like brand new today.
Waves – zip.
Weather – much better today (25).
Pipe – YES! Oh boy there is some amazing surfing to watch right here right now
Xmas shopping – well, you are not too late. Nope still got time. Order our book today, we ship today. Order our new 4 pack we will race it down the Postie. Santa Chaos

A world record was broken down at Bondi this morning. No, not for the most amount of dropins on one wave. No, not for the most amount of baby oil applied in a 900 metre stretch. It was for the worlds largest surf lesson of 320 surfing Santa’s. Just an average morning down there – really. Santas caught 4.2 inch waves before being splatted on the shore. Fun!
No waves to surf, best do you Christmas shopping people.

Friends. We have small waves and clear skies. It’s just a perfect day down here on the beach. Max 29.
Bondi is getting very busy as summer sets in. The Euros have arrived (even Oprah was eating lunch at Icebergs Dining Room yesterday). There is no surf all week so keep the boards in their covers and go for a swim.
I know…I must not use my Aquabumps Daily Email for personal reasons. Well, just this once OK? Forgive me. I have surfboards. Lots of boards. A whole loft full. It’s my weakness. Every year I have a freak out and sell a few. Some are brand new, some used three times, some are all banged up but still go good. If you want a real bargain, bid on one here. Auctions end this week.

Ladies Day

The waves were small and the water chilly…but the girls will were out in force. It’s Ladies Day!
How hot was it this morning after that steamy night? Roaster. The mercury will climb to 35 degrees today ahead of the standard southerly blast.
Been watching the Pipeline Masters? Was pretty big yesterday. Round 1 Recap
We are still making custom artwork orders for Christmas in the Aquabumps Gallery. Yes, you’re not too late. If you’re picking up from the Bondi Gallery (i.e. No shipping) we can custom make any artwork for you. Just look at our online catalogue, pick a size (from $150) and place your order before 6pm this Sunday 13th Dec…then we will have it ready for you on the 23rd Dec. Easy!

Bondi Clippings

I went down the beach earlier today. It wasn’t very pretty. The skies were a hue of dark grey and the waves looked confused (and small). Took a couple of snaps of the surfers then found myself kicking around Bondi village, where I live. This is what I saw…

Underlying

Bamboo Benny from Coastalwatch called it…a mix of swells…new underlying south swell that may pump out the odd bump. Ah-huh…Bondi had some decent little fruit bowls on a right bank earlier today – but wow, what a crowd…boards in all directions. Bring your helmet.
We’ve had a pretty decent run of small, surfable swells. I’ll go out on a limb and say we’ve had around 21 days in a row of surfing. Na, you’re not getting shacked…just getting wet.
The water was freezing this morning. Rubber required. Hot and humid today!

Flimsy

Well…after the recent golden surf days this morning was a little bit of a disappointment. It’s gone all wobbly, flimsy and full. The morning high tide probably concealed any goodness. I’m hoping the lower tides will bring joy.
The clear skies have been filled with clouds. A good day to get some work done or do your Christmas shopping!

Well…that was a pretty special weekend of weather and waves – init? That NE swell sure was providing. All the exposed East breaks lit up and the beaches were packed. Very typical summer conditions.

Spike

The swell has piped up and there’s some fresh chunks to ride. Fun ones from the SE. Seeing there was 10,000 people on the beach at sunrise the water was relatively empty. The cold water must have scared a few or they’re off seeking better waves down the coast.
The wind is SSE and 11 knots right now. That’s not too bad. Little onshore.
Today and tomorrow are good beach going days!

Arvo Post

G’day. No, I hadn’t forgotten about you. Did you cope this morning without your early daily Aquabumps or are you still wandering around in a daze of confusion. It’ll be OK. We’re here now. Let’s talk.
I shot Bondi at sunrise and it wasn’t that inspirational. Fortunately the swell has leaped into the 3-4 foot realm, but she had some pretty wonky bits to it. Fat and wonky. Fat, wonky and rather empty.
It’s 2:30pm…I’ve come inside to post and the sunshine looks to be out for the rest of the day. So I’d say the arvo is shaping up just nicely after a rough start.
I’ve had the Aquabumps Gallery for 12 Christmas’s now. Every year is the same. As we progress closer to the 25th a flurry of callers are disappointed to find we are mainly a custom-made-to-order business (for bigger works, we have plenty of smaller works in stock that you can buy whenever). So, if you’re thinking about purchasing something special to tuck under the tree, come with me…right here…right now…choose one…punch in the digits and bingo your Christmas Shopping is done! Go surf. Oh, the moral of the story is that we need 2-3 weeks to make anything. Anything. Let’s do it.

It’s currently 31 degrees and about to scorch at 35 degrees. Not a bad first day of summer hey?
It’s Tuesday, a little early in the week to play hooky, but it’s quite simply an immaculate beach day (sans surf).
Waves broke tiny circa uno pede. Bring your mal, your mullet, your foamie, your boogs, your flippers, your brollie and your good attitude and head for the beach.
These days are to be savored.

Uncommon Bondi

When people think of Bondi they instantly imagine 50,000 people crammed on a 900 metre beach with Bondi Rescue dudes running around pulling them out of rips. Well, if you live here, there’s much more to it. There’s a tight knit community of interesting people who love 2026 with all it’s quirks.
Bondi is changing so fast. Just walk around. Cranes everywhere. What was once nicknamed ‘Scum Valley‘ is now looking pretty fancy. The most expensive real estate in Australia is right here…I mean…seriously…25 million for an apartment in the old Swiss Grand.
Today’s post is dedicated to those cracks of Bondi that are rarely seen. The uncommon places off the beach…OK because the waves are crap and I went for a wander.
We’re all pretty busy and would rather be surfing than doing our groceries. Yeah, a-huh, I hear ya. Well, you heard of ShopWings? It’s a new local multi-store delivery service in your local hood. It’s quick…1 hour turnaround for delivery quick! That’s amazing! Try it

Black Friday

Australia breeds talented surfers. Maybe it’s because we live on a big island, mostly coastal and love the water. Right now 10 of the top 20 men’s surfers in the world are Australian…and it looks good for Mick to take another title in Hawaii. I reckon it’s also because we have consistent waves here…you can surf most days. We also teach our groms young to become water men. The groms were attacking Maroubra this morning. Oh boy they’re good.
The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday (mainly in the States). It marks the 1st day of Christmas Shopping Season. #aquabumpsgallery is here for all your gifting needs. Shorey Beater

After a hot sleepless night you probably found yourself down the beach, early. It was the hottest November night in four years. Sticky wasn’t it?
At 5:30am Bondi Beach looked like the Pitt Street Mall.
The waves have been quartered…and it was pretty much a shorey. Whilst it’s roasting out, the water temp plummeted in yesterday’s northerlies.
Today is going to hit 38 degrees. Hot huh? I might take my two groms and terrorize the North Bondi Kiddie pool – look out. No toy within 100 metres will be safe.

Yo. It’s surfable today. 2-3 foot. Fat with the morning high tide then slapping on the beach. The southern corner had a shorey with attitude. Nothing like a spin cycle before work! Oh hang on, that’s work.

Friday was a real novelty in Sydney wasn’t it? One of those freaks. 41 degrees still at 7pm and everyone hit the beach to cool off. At 7:15pm a raging southerly tore it up and cooled it back down to humane temps. Arrgh yes, love that southerly.
I took the bird out and shot most of these images. We landed as the wind hit. It was quite exciting! The temps dropped from 41 to 27 in minutes.
Today – mild day with small 2-3 footers. No where near as exciting.

Cray Cray

Today is one of those crazy Sydney dayz where it’s gonna melt to 41 degrees. They’re calling it Fryday. A huge hot air mass is creeping up to Sydney and the winds will go calm before BANG (insert large bang sound like a front door slamming in the wind)..the southerly will hit, probably around 8 or 9pm tonight. Nothing like a good smotherly before bedtime to cool things down.
Summary – go home early and swim. We have small crumbly waves of 2 footage.
Like Bronwyn Bishop I like helicopters. Only difference is that I pay for mine and they don’t drop me off to dinner dates. I am most likely flying above Bondi around 6pm (should weather and control tower permit). So if you’re down the beach at 6pm tonight, you’ll feature in one of my signature aerial images like these. Would make a special chrissy present for someone if you’re in it.

Cult

News.com.au named us a cult business in this story last month. Always wanted one of those, a cult. Y’know, roll around in a robe preaching random theories. Live on a plot of land outside Byron…making rules like you must surf at least 4 hours a day.
I still remember 16 years ago dreaming up the concept of a photo-a-day. I thought it would be a cool thing…let alone a photo of the beach a every day. Back in 1999 that was like WOW man. Now you all have Instagram in your pocket documenting your every day, coffee, new purchase and most importantly the #selfie. Who’d thought taking daily photos would be so popular!
Enough ramble. I digress.
Anyway my disciplines, the junkie swell has come up, it’s surfable but messy 2 foot. Gonna rain later.

I was down the beach with Mick today. The biggest name in surfing right now as he’s looking down the barrel of a 4th world title…yes, four!
Mick and I have a lot in common…

Mick EUGENE Fanning. Top name.

Mick spent the morning at long reef in 1-2 foot dribble…we both wished it was pumping. Coupla good banks.
Mick tames Great Whites – I’ve watched the movie Jaws 12 times

The Rookie

I’ve got a confession…
I nailed some storm photos on Friday. You know, the Armageddon type cloud that rolled in Sydney at lunchtime on Friday 6th November that everyone is talking about and broke the internet? It was amazing. I was luckily enough to be down there at first hint of that radical front – I raced back to the gallery – grabbed the nearest camera and sprinted back down.
I was so chuffed with myself. Snappin’ away. 20 different angles of the cloud juggernaut.
But…
I got back to my desk, started downloading and realized my studio camera was set to 720 pixels JPG files (lo res). R O O K I E ! I am still slappin’ myself as I write this. I’m devo. So no, I can’t print these minuscule bad boys and barely resuscitated an image out of ’em for this blog post. Forgive me.
Surf is 1-2 foot. Clean early today. Clear Skies. Small waves all week.

Two Faced

Quite a strange morning down the beach. I’m not just talking about the usual antics, but the weather was so random.
When I woke it felt cold, wet and stormy. Went down the beach and fog clung to the cliffs. 45 minutes later it was smoking hot and summery with full sunshine.
Weird. It’s like the day just can’t make it’s mind up. Max 28.
Other random highlights of the morning:

A birthday cake at Bondi with a girl about to jump out of it. ???
Spray and wipe bottles were being used as post surf showers
Met Luke Hynd, Derek’s nephew who’s in town promoting his new film Wanderlust – watch this short, real good

Well…we are getting our fair share of rain. My garden is loving it. Bondi

Horse 20, Race 7, 3:00pm, Flemington
It’s Melbourne Cup day and we’ve got a horse running…BONDI BEACH. It’s kinda funny that the horse is from Ireland, where many Bondi beach summer patrons come from. I wonder if our horse took a dip this morning…at Bondi…in his jeans after a few largers wearing a soccer jersey? Maybe not today. As it was one of the most uninspiring days down there at sunrise. Rain, 1ft, onshore. No good.
Bondi Beach is running odds of 23 to 1. So if you put $10,000 on it you’ll be rich and can retire on your own island in the Mentawais next week. With me? I hear it’s the youngest horse in the race, a vain thing, eats organic feed, does a bit of Vinyasa yoga, wears tight jeans and has a overgrown beard….oh and unlikely to win – but I’ll back it. How could we not…wearing the name of our beloved patch of sand.
Here’s 10 photos of Bondi to inspire your betting today. Good luck. Drop any winnings off to the gallery.

Well…that was a pretty stunning weekend…wasn’t it? Bondi was in full swing – packed. Nippers, Sculptures, pissed people…everything. Never a dull moment.
After a weekend of small but fun waves, we pretty much have nothing to write about today. 1 foot – if that and rain.
Random bits:

This bag features one of my images and will carry all your stash instead of those evil placky bags. Yes, it’s reusable and will save the planet – so pick up one please people.
