Being one of the last Aquabumps updates for 2012 I thought I’d showcase some images I like looking at (and taken this year). It’s been a fun a year. Lots of travel in the first half, no travel in the second half and plenty of Bondi updates.
There is now 45,000 people that subscribe to our daily emails, nearly 70,000 on Facebook and 9,000 on Instagram. Oh forgot to mention 150,000 people drop thru our site casually every month. That’s pretty cool.
This all started from a little hobby and burning passion for the beach and surfing…punching out pictures of the beach each morning back in the 90’s…well before blogs, Flickr, Facey and stuff. This is an original idea…and I’m really into it…still…after 13 years.
It’s an exciting time to take photos for a living. We have access to so much good stuff…good cameras…great software…and free tools to show millions of people our captures.
I still freak out when writing this daily ramble. Who’d thought a C grade English yr 10 student would write something to a crowd the size of a small country. Sorry for all the typos. (I’m actually not that bright).
Special thanks to our corporate partners : Canon, Telstra, Land Rover, HTC and Peroni. With their continued support it allows us to do cool things and keep this daily slice free for you all.
Goodbye 2012…hello 2013.
Merry Christmas to you and your families. Thank you for tuning in : : uge
Today is a very strange day weatherwise.
It’s gonna roll out like this:
She’s gonna get hot. Hottest day in 1 year. 35 degrees – wow.
Winds will be NW – a hot wind.
Waves are shoulder high at East facing beaches like Maroubra. Bondi is knee to waist high.
After lunchtime a gusty cool change will sweep over Sydney.
The temperature will drop by 15 degrees. Yes. 15 degrees. Pack ya jumper.
Thunderstorms will develop and you will think that the the 2nd half of the day is not connected to the 1st. Odd.
My advice is go for a swim right now before all this changes. Its really nice.
Swell coming for the weekend
As you were.
Oh. If you want an Aquabumps Book – we’ll slap one in a Next Day Post bag for ya now. Be quick and click here.

This morning I went swimming with my camera but had a little short circuit in my housing…so for 10 minutes it continuously shot frames @ 10 frames per second. That’s a lot of throw aways.
These 9 images where the keepers from 6,000 images shot in that short space of time.
Not much to surf this morning. East swell struggling to put on a knee to waist high wave. NE winds 10-15 knots with a chance of showers. Nice and muggy with 28 degrees.
Swell should bump up tonight. (pray)
It’s still not too late…nope (just). You can order an Aquabumps Book or Gift Card online right now and we will stick it in a NEXT DAY post for you. That means if you see your postcode HERE you will get it tomorrow – hooray! We are also very organised and have plenty of stock left in the Aquabumps Gallery ready for you to run away with. See you soon 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 or pop into our pop up store up at Westfield Bondi junction (near Zara).
Grey start to the morning with little floppy 1- 2 footers.
You can surf it, if you’re keen…but a swim is ideal.
The clouds have now parted for a 26 degree day. For those on holidays already…enjoy. E/NE winds all day – good up at north corner.
Christmas is in the air and only 1 week away. What are you getting me?
If you order our salubrious award winning book today we will post it same day, and you should get it tomorrow (if you’re in the next day network)

The southerly was up early and spoiling most breaks around the Eastern Suburbs. A short trip over the bridge to Manly proved successful in stalking something rideable…and around head high on sets. Nice over there. Plenty of space and car parks!
Later this week, (like Thursday) I reckon will have some really fun waves.
You’re not too late to purchase things from our gallery. We’re heavily stocked and do gift cards ‘n’ books that are available over night (we send them to you!)
Parko won his world title. How good is that.
Seeya, :: uge
Today the tide was in early and porking up anything moving out there. Knee to chest high waves were fat as…
Nice day, 27 degrees and a typical summer north wind pattern. Hit the beach.
The Pipeline Masters is on hold today, but the swell and tension is building. This is a big one. Parko Vs Kelly for the title. C’mon Parko. I reckon it will be on tomorrow morning early our time in 6-8 foot – let’s hope she’s clean and lining up. We want a good, clean fight…
We have plenty of stuff for Xmas gifts at Aquabumps. We even have a pop up store at Westfield Bondi Junction where you can buy books’n’blocks’n’stuff. Or come for a swim at the beach and visit us Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 9130 7788. Buy a book online now, get it Monday (if in Australia and next day post zone)
Seeya, :: u g e
The swell direction has flipped and so has the weather.
Sunny with shoulder to head high waves coming in from the East.
Gonna hit 26 banging degrees today – so good.
NE winds will howl later 25 knots…good for protected North Bondi (for a swim).
Christmas shoppers are in full swing…come to our gallery 10-6 daily or visit our pop up store at Westfield Bondi Junction. I still reckon gift cards are the way to go!
Adios :: ugios
FINALLY we’ve got some waves worth writing about. Similar to Hawaii it’s only knee to waist high waves but surfable.
Hope you got down there early before this no-good easterly wind picks up. 25 degrees with a possible shower.
Swell will vanish tonight and Friday/Saturday is shall return.
Pipeline Masters probably off until Friday/Saturday.
If you’re sitting in London and want our book sent to you in time for Christmas. Yes we can do it! Order today and it will arrive December 21 via Fedex. Chop chop.
Seeya, :: uge
Today is another gloomy day down the beach.
The wind is still howling and the ocean is a mess. Enough said.
All you need to know about today is that the wind will start to drop tonight.
Yesterday was an exciting day at the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii. It’s down to Parko and Slater for the title. Mick is out.
All this Hawaii talk got me frothing over my shots taken earlier this year at Pipe. Man it gets big and heavy there. Rattles you a bit when it’s large and you’re swimming around with your little camera. Here is some b-sides from a swim on a 3rd reef day. I gotta get back there.
b y e : : u g e
Feels like we’ve been transported back to the wintery blues after a few steamy summery days. That south change hit yesterday around 10am and has hung around. So windy.
Forget surfing. Its dire down there with that wicked combo of onshore and small conditions. Wait until the blow subsides.
Whilst you’re bunkering down indoors…the PIPELINE MASTERS is on right now. Oh boy it’s a race to the finish with Parko, Fanning and Slater all in the running for the World Title. Parko just made it through his Round 3 heat over Kalani Chapman…you gotta watch this. Hell even Kelly Slater’s mother has flown into Hawaii for this show down (and she hasn’t been to a surf comp in 10 years). Is Slater really retiring after this event?
Today’s pressie idea – Gift Cards to our Aquabumps Gallery. Easy! Order online and they will be in your mail box tomorrow (in oz only)
Cheers, : : u g e
That swell came and is now going.
Today we have left over waist high to the odd head high wave.
Bondi wasn’t coping with a lower tide this morning and predominantly closing out.
Kinda patchy clouds, not sure whether it’s going to be a nice day or not. Only 24.
One thing is for sure, Christmas is approaching and best get into our gallery before this Sunday to put in your artwork orders – or there will be plenty of excuses under the tree.

Just like we talked about yesterday a new swell has arrived…LIKE!
It’s 4-5 foot and breaking pretty straight at Bondi. I’m not complaining as this is the biggest it’s been in weeks. I would go find another beach with sand banks or a chunk of reef though. Bondi just ain’t cutting it.
I hope you got down there early, as the wind will blow SE 15 knots later. That will put a dampener on things.
The weather on Saturday is looking fantastic. Beach day for sure.
If you’d like a hand crafted, made to order, Aquabumps artwork for Xmas, this Sunday, 9th Dec midnight is our cut off for new orders. Best come into the Aquabumps Gallery or order online now to be safe. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 telephone 9130 7788

It was good to see a little bump in swell this morning. Finally the small wave days have come to an end. (for a little while)
It was waist to chest high this morning down at Bondi. The swell is from the south, so we’d be seeing the best of it here in Bondi.
It is going to get bigger today…
Tomorrow a large swell will hit. You should see waves in the 4 – 6 foot range. Hoot hoot! I haven’t surfed in ages.
Layla, one of our employees has left the Aquabumps nest to start her own beach towel range called Tribal Friday (obviously using her incredible business acumen acquired at Aquabumps). I used one of her brightly printed towels this morning and they’re great! Well done Layla. Good xmas pressie idea. Order Online
I had a really good time shooting these ten photos down at Bondi Beach this morning. I hope it shows.
The water was immaculate, warm and clear. The sun was out baking without a cloud of hindrance in the sky. Wind – there was none. Waves – none of those either. Well I guess I few knee cappers.
It’s days like these that are torturous to be working 200 metres from the water’s edge. I’m glad I got up early for a 1 hour swim already. I do love my job.
Today’s focus is on the people who love the ocean from 19 month old Jet to Henry Crouch – the people that are down there daily that I see on my morning travels. These are happy people.
Oh boy it’s getting close to Xmas. If you want to know how much time you need to get stuff from our Gallery, read this Christmas order summary page. In a nutshell you have until THIS SUNDAY to place your artwork orders in (LOCAL PICK UP ONLY). If you’re overseas, maybe buy unframed prints now or books. We’ll get it to you, where ever you are. It’s raining this morning.
Not pretty down the beach. There’s a little dribbly wave for the very enthusiastic types. I’d pass. I even passed on shooting pics from behind the windscreen wipers.
Here’s a few images that I’ve been working on and haven’t made it onto the site yet.
Have a great Monday.
After a sticky night it’s going to be a hot one today, but still hotter tomorrow. Wow.
There are no waves of significance to write about. Knee cappers.
Hit the beach, it’s amazing right now. 10/10.
Come to the Aquabumps Gallery, we’re open every day 10 to 6 and the deadline for xmas present orders is closing soon! Order online now

Today when I rolled down the beach I saw:
– Brand new waist to shoulder high waves definitely worth surfing (little fat)
– Lots of people, up for the warm weather and working on the summer rig
– 50 mad cows littered around Bondi beach
– Free Ice-cream – I am an addict.
– NE winds
– My mate Sam in a pair of boardies he’s own since he was 17 (he’s now an old man at 40)
– A very good looking day – go outside!
Christmas is now 4 weeks away. If you want to order artworks from us to give to your people, they will take 3 weeks to hand craft, yes each order is processed in our secret mountain top factory, guarded by Buddhist monks, and Sir Tom, our master head framer, carves out the raw oak from a (dead) tree and then sands it into a frame which you can then pick up from our Bondi Gallery 151 Curlewis Street NSW 2026 Telephone 9130 7788 order artworks online right now and don’t even leave your seat!

It’s been a long week since we’ve had fun waves in Sydney. Today’s tiny again and overcast. That storm last night gave us a good wash.
I just checked the forecast and there are no substantial swells to report. Not in the near future. Sit tight. It’ll happen.
Xmas is less than 4 weeks away. Orders in our gallery will take 3 weeks. That leaves you 1 week to get your act together and order! Buy Prints Online

P.S. sorry no shots of the Algal Bloom @ Bondi…was across the other side of town when it hit.
Today is a combination of flat light and flat surf.
Don’t be fooled by my first image where a guy is hot doggin’ down the line on a long board. He got lucky.
I wish I had a dollar for every person that has requested shots of Clovelly in my Bondi Gallery. I’d be rich and build a wave pool on a farm like the one in Dubai. How good would that be? I’d build a little bar on the side and serve fancy cocktails in between waves. You could surf all night long…
Sorry…back to Clovelly. Today I ventured down to the little waveless nook. My first impression was, well, lots of concrete. Someone’s gone nuts with it and poured it everywhere. It was relatively quiet at 5:30am but at 6:30am it was a hive of biathlon maniacs doing laps. The blueys are in so you could hear cries of pain every 3 minutes. So peeps, here’s your Clovelly shots up in bright shining lights.

It’s Monday morning after one of the best looking weekends of the year. Yesterday was mental down at Bondi. 20,000 plus people hit the beach in perfect weather.
Today’s a little different with cloud cover and a only handful of people down there. Today is not made for surfing. Perfect for a swim or pop into the Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach (T: 9130 7788) for a little Christmas shopping.
This week : warm weather and small waves.
There is a lot of talk to what is going to happen with the Bondi Pavilion (the structure on the beach). There’s even an action group headed up by Lenore Kulakauskas called ‘Friends of Bondi Pavilion’. If you’d like to get involved there is a meeting on Saturday 1 December 2012, 2pm at the Bondi Pavilion Theatre. End of public announcement and back to normal viewing.
Back to work : : u g e
It’s a little small yet surfable this morning. Remnants of a couple swells are putting on the odd shoulder high wave at Bondi.
The sun is trying to fight its way through scattered clouds as it heats up to a mild 23 degrees.
The onshore SE winds will swing around to the NE later today – that will clean up the conditions.
No significant swells on the radar for a week which is pretty typical of summer.
Christmas orders in our gallery are in full swing. Xmas is only 1 month away. If you’re overseas and want some of our artworks or books – you need to kick start into gear as it takes time to hand craft artworks and send them around the globe. Or perhaps go for a Gift Card (easy!)

Yesterday was quite an amazing day to go surfing.
Today tis not so good. It’s horrendously onshore and overcast.
Instead of shooting onshore slop I opted to point my lens at the people I see down there, every day. There are hundreds that get up at sunrise and do their thing. Here is a few.
Adios :: uge
The winds have died down and the swell is now coming from the East…and plenty of it.
Seeing Bondi kinda neglects the Easts swells I strayed across the bridge (yes with passport and full tank of gas) to the salubrious beachside town of Manly. I can safely say that all 1.5 km of Manly had good waves in a variety of sizes. Loads of people up early…just as many as Bondi, maybe even more. I saw sets well over head high, sometimes head’n’half at sunrise. I was itching to get out there…
The wind looks like it’s come up now, but I think you will still find something fun to surf. The swell will decline today and shoulder high only tomorrow.
Enjoy your day :: uge
I reckon I’m turning into an insomniac after shooting at sunrise for over 13 years. 4:50am I was up today, waiting for some light down the beach. Didn’t really know what to do with myself…the sunrise was a bit of a fizzer and 20 knots of onshore made sure there were no waves. Well, no waves I’d like to ride. It was just me and this Kombi…hanging in the car park. Waiting for something to happen. I even think someone was inside sleeping in this Kombi.
The good news is that this wind is predicted to drop off this afternoon. You know what that means. Maybe some better waves.
Big Dion has got Buckie the dog back. Hooray. The big fella is happy. Phew. The big fella is also a very talented artist working in metal. Very talented. I’m saving up for one of his works. The talked about south storm hit last night with a bang. After a glorious Sunday of sunshine and northerlies – pow – it tore through Sydney and left as fast as it hit.
This morning I was a little surprised to find a beautiful morning, sunshine and shoulder high waves. The ocean is junkie from the short stint of violent agitation, but at least there are waves.
It’s going to be much bigger tomorrow.
Our Gallery is open 7 days a week 10-6 (telephone 9130 7788). Christmas orders need to be in before the end of the month.
Ciao :: uge
It’s quite the ugly day outside. I’m digging deep to give you the positive spin.
My new garden is loving the rain but the boards are tucked up snug in the board bags.
Waves are ankle to knee high and junk. Worst I’ve seen in weeks.
Swell is coming though. Next Tuesday looks BIG.
Hard to believe Christmas is only 6 weeks away. If you want to buy presents from our gallery you’ll need to allow 3 weeks for local orders and if you’re sitting in London you will need to order this week! Gallery open all weekend 10am to 6pm. Buy online
See you soon, : : u g e
The clouds are slowing clearing and it is nice and calm down the beaches.
Bondi barely had a wave. Knee choppers.
It will warm up to 26 degrees today before rain and cold weather tomorrow.
Tomorrow the waves are also tiny.
Saturday there should be something for you to ride (head high). Phew.
Good bye : : uge
After watching Red Bull’s new surfing movie last night starring Jordy Smith (Bending Colours), I was all pumped up to shoot some high performance surfing today. The conditions were lacking at Bondi, weak and waist to shoulder high – not ideal. The skies are filled with threatening rain clouds – making it dark and needing to shoot in the high ISO’s. Also, couldn’t see the solar eclipse with all that cloud cover dammit. Had visions of shooting Pama in the air with an eclipse behind him. (I’ll keep working on that one – bit like the ET cover)
As you can see I don’t have much else to write about today – so as you were :: uge
I think today’s Aquabumps daily slice will hit your inbox before you even get into work. Early! We’re a well-oiled machine here at Aquabumps today. Just this once so don’t get used to it.
The best word to describe today is windy. Whole 25 knots of southerly is tearing through Sydney at the moment and making a mess of things. The surf look windblown and waist high. You can surf it, but surely you’ve got things to do.
Much cooler today – 22. The winds will kink around to the SE which will make it worse…
Head down, crank the work out :: uge
Nice little surprise to find some waves down at Bondi this morning.
At around 8am it seemed optimal. Little wind, shoulder high waves on a couple of banks. Not too fat. An hour later, around 9am it didn’t seem as good. Maybe that’s a sign to go to work.
This week will roll like this:
– Tuesday: Shoulder high waves from the North (East facing beaches), Weather – sunny 24
– Wednesday: Shoulder high waves from the South (Bondi), Weather – mostly sunny 23
– Thursday: Day off surfing, very small, Weather – maybe some rain but warm 29
– Friday: Small again, Weather – maybe some rain 23
I found this video of Chippa Wilson and Jack Freestone surfing in the Dubai desert wave pool most interesting.
Oh. You can also win a Canon EOS 650 Digital Camera – all ya gotta do is vote for your favourite images here in the EOS Photo 5 Comp.
Have a great week :: uge
The Royals are coming to Bondi today.
I told Prince Charlie that the waves aren’t that great today, only knee to waist high and very weak. Told him to bring his big board down – like a log – oh and a wettie as the water is freezing. Nice day though – cracker…as we look at 25 degrees today before a thunderstorm. (could be a big storm)
A large part of the beach is also roped off for the Prince, so he can work on his base tan in peace. Maybe a bit of bat’n’ball in the old thong.
Oh and our gallery is open all weekend as usual, 10am to 6pm for your Christmas orders. Remember, artworks take 2-3 weeks for us to hand make – so get onto it!

PS – do you know Komune Resort has opened up in Bali on the epic right, Keramas?
Been a lot of NE swell this week. No good around Bondi. Rolled down to Maroubra for a shoot in the drink…that place loves this direction of swell.
There’s a terrific bank down there, super shallow close in then dramatically dropping off out to sea. Perfect bottom contour to put on some hollow wedges.
Today is the last of the NE swell, tomorrow a new, small south swell will arrive.
Possible thunderstorms today and 27. A cold weekend coming.
Obviously I’m a better photographer than horse punter. Sorry about yesterday’s bad tip. Thanks for all the abusive sms’s. Hope ya didn’t lose the house on that one.
A guy won a million dollars at the TAB next door to us in Bondi though…scoring the trifecta. I reckon it’s my neighbour as at 5:30am when I rolled out of bed he was charging on, showering himself in champers, inebriated and celebrating. He’s the new Bondi Corey (Worthington). There is a few Bondi Coreys around. Silly season is here.
To me the surf looked less than exciting at 6am. High tide 2 footers chumpin’ into Tamarama. Yawn. I shoulda gone down to the Bra which loves this NE stuff.
Rain today, tomorrow and possibly a bit on Friday.
We are currently taking xmas present orders in our Bondi Gallery. No need to leave your seat. Order online now. You can get any image printed and framed from $150. But you gotta allow 2-3 weeks.
Good bye :: uge
Today is the best day of the year to go surfing as the Melbourne Cup is on (no one down the beach). Shame the waves are tiny around here. It’s a NE swell, so Manly, Whaley or Maroubra would have sumpin’…like waist to chest high wind swell waves.
It is going to be 27 degrees today. Perfect for those Melbourne Cup luncheons…nothing like a bit of champers in the sun to make you dizzy.
Some random guy reckons Mount Athos is gonna win the Cup (he can see into the future). Can ya put a grand on it and we can go halves in the winnings? It’s paying 9 bucks on the nose. That’s a lot of new surfboards (and Aquabumps artworks).
Good luck punters :: uge
Really promising start to the week. Clear skies, good sunrise and peaky 2 footers at the Bra (NE swell). Just looked at the weather forecast – 27 and perfectly sunny today. Nice. Hope the office cubicle has a window.
It is going to rain Thursday and Friday this week – so drop tools and hit the beach…now.
Christmas @ the Aquabumps Gallery
Can you believe it’s November already? Where did the year go? Christmas is next month and if you want to get presents from the gallery you’ll need to get sorted. P.S. Aquabumps won the Blackberry SurfAid Cup – hoot hoot! Thanks to Grigga, Ritchie Lovett, Mark Eymes and Peebee for making us look good. (Photo: Murray Fraser)
Today’s Aquabumps comes from the back seat of my car…in Manly.
It is the SURFAID CUP today. Ex world champs, wanna be world champs, big time corporate cowboys and 2-3 footers all come together for a tag team surf comp – all in the name of charity.
Come down and watch team Aquabumps win the final!
The southerly is up and howling. Conditions are super messy. Manly is quite a good option in this wind, just a little protected from the swell. Bondi would be pretty rogue.
Have a great weekend. Last weekend of Sculptures by the Sea.
Can you believe it’s going to be 34 degrees today? Wow.
Typical of Sydney, as soon as it gets hot a storm will follow. Wind coming too. That’ll cool it right down from 34 to 21 tomorrow. Wow.
The surf was dribbling in this morning. Knee cappers and worthy of a log. Tomorrow is totally different with a new south swell. We’re at Manly tomorrow as Aquabumps has a team in the SURF AID CUP (Queensie end). So if you want to see some really good surfing, a few famous world champion surfers oh and support our team to a victory…come down from 9am. Thanks to ALOHA and GSI, we’re auctioning a 6’6” x 21”Aloha Bean Future Flex (I ride an Aloha Bean and love it). The auction ends in 1 hour (hurry). All proceeds of the board sale will go directly to SURFAID. BID NOW

These past few months the weather in Sydney has been immaculate. Day after day of glorious sunshine. A good year to build a house aye?
Today was quite sumpin’ down there a 6:30am. Truckloads of people, massive packs of surfers and everyone enjoying the good weather.
The waves are small, waist high – but every 30 minutes a head high set. Hope you’ve got a relatively free schedule and can get down here.
B y e :: u g e
I like taking pictures. I reckon you’d gathered that by now. Taking pictures gets me up early, before most…and drags me down the beach. Some mornings are better than others down there. Today was one of the better ones.
I swam before sunrise with the camera in tow. It’s like dragging a bowling ball around with me. The water was silky smooth without a breath of wind. Real nice. Good little left in the middle. It just wasn’t very big (waist high). Superb morning to just be out there.
Later doozies :: uge
Got kinda big yesterday and has now calmed down. I like what I saw down there this morning. Smooth conditions, head high waves on rippy banks. Oh, it’s Monday crowds too – nice and lite. The best!
This week the swell will retreat leaving waist high waves on Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday it will return in force as a big swell approaches for the weekend. (double head high)
Wednesday is going to be a unreal beach day, 28 and sunny. Put that in the diaries and blow off work.
