Howdy. Merry Christmas all. Hope you had a good one.
If you’re a surfer in Singapore you’d go mad. The place it one big shopping centre with 400,000 expats running around the joint.
Should you require some board time, you either have to jump over the back fence to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia, or hit the new Wavehouse, based on Sentosa in Singapore.
Here’s the low down, it’s 2 months old, cost $1.5 million to build and is basically a 2 metre high structure in the shape of a wave. Turn the jets on and pump 60,000 gallons of water on it per minute, and it’s 2 foot and pumping.
It’s a lot harder to surf than you think. More similar to snowboarding and wakeboarding than surfing – all off the rear foot.
If you’re heading up this way, stop by Sentosa Wavehouse, have a session (costs $35Aud for 1 hr) and there is a decent sized bar surrounding it if you’re feeling parched.
Check out our little video (all taken on the Canon 5d)

Well that’s it for another year. This is our last communication until 2010. Thanks for reading this salt crusted update from the beach…I still can’t believe there are so many of you interested in it as I’ve never marketed it – you just came by or a mate stuck you on it. What started out as a muck-around-email between friends has grown to over 30,000 subscribers from all over the globe and a further 120,000 unique people look at the website every month. Gotta say, it freaks me out in the mornings knowing how many read it (typos and all)…
March 2010 marks 11 years of Aquabumps. Yup, no joke. It all started in 1999, that’s before blogs were popular (don’t think they were even around then), when digital cameras cost a fortune and you read every single email that hit your inbox (‘cause you only got 5 per day). The only other surf sites in Oz at the time were Coastalwatch’s cams and Don’s with Realsurf. There seems to be a dozen websites per beach nowadays, good to see everyone getting up for the early…
Lotta people work on Aquabumps nowadays, some for big cash, some for free – here’s the big thanx…Special thanks goes to Jon Frank, one the best water shooters for introducing me to water photography. Massive thanks to Returnity for helping me reach 30,000 readers with their salubrious bulk email tools. Onya Canon for supporting me with the best camera gear in the business (yeah you Macleod). Gloria, Aimee, Tracy, Ming, Mischee for all working in the gallery and puttin’ up with me. Zac, Robb, Stephen, Chris Jones for all working on my website and iPhone app. Peroni, Jed wines for lubricating the gallery. All the advertisers – keeping the daily free, Kelvinator you I.T. genius, Bart you photography oracle, Tengirri Mentawai charter boat, Ness, Jv for mentoring, Andi from World is round for the new gallery design, Grego + Pete for building it reasonably, CBA (one of my biggest clients), all that have purchased from the gallery and my lady friend Deb for listening me talk about Aquabumps 24/7. Phew…thanks to all the readers!
2010 will be another big year. Got some great things planned as we expand the Aquabumps empire. We’re running a survey soon so you can have some input in what goes on here.

Have a great Christmas, and New Year…
Eugene Tan (Uge)
PS – there are no waves today! hit the beach before the glorious weather changes (rain for the next few days). Swell tomorrow.
Hard to believe Christmas is this Friday – where did this year go?
Looks like many have fled town for their summer holiday…Bondi was remarkably quiet(ish).
Hell you might even be able to find a car park along Campbell Parade.
Pity about the swell.
It’s tiny and from the NE, sooo not suited to Bondi.
Around the corner “may” have a bump, but I’m sure the flags will be up soon.
Swell coming though…
Should be quiet decent on Christmas day (and maybe sumpin’ tomorrow)
Friday, I’d say 3-4 ft at NE swell magnets (that’s not bondi kids)
You’ll probably won’t be down there for the new swell though.
So we can all bitch’ and moan about these summer tiny conditions some more.
I know I sound like a broken record, but the Aquabumps gallery is open today + tomorrow then closed until 2nd Jan.
It’s just that the phone rings all day with people asking if we’re open. Yep, we’re open!
We just had a load of new frames delivered, so there’s plenty to choose from and take away today for the last minute pressies.

On 1st light it looked flat out there…but around 8am I saw a mini-pulse push in the odd wave. The school-holiday-groms were all over it. 1-2 foot today, sunny and hot. 29 degrees. Seeing most of you are on holidays – hit the beach, it’s a good one.
Thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus clouds show warning of a shower and thunderstorm later today (looking out the window right now, I find that hard to believe).
Next swell due – Christmas Day (of course it is…and you’ll probably won’t see any of it as you’ll be mid-relatives bash out west)
The Aquabumps Gallery is packed and open until Christmas eve for the last minute gifts (every day 10am to 6pm). We’re closed between Christmas Eve and New Year’s. You’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach Telephone 02 9130 7788. You can view our online catalogue here.
There is a new board store on Campbell parade – Bondi Underground where the old Mambo shop was. Drop by and check it out.
North Bondi SLSC are rebuilding their club house. I know you’ve all grown attached to those lovely poo-brown bricks and shapeless form that is plonked on our beach, but the grand plan is incredible (if you get a chance, look at the proposed designs – amazing). For years now they’ve been raising funds for the new build. Well the club has released a calendar “North Bondi Warriors” flashin’ the flesh of its 2000 members. They cost $19.95 and you can order online here. Please support.
Have fun, uge
Howdy. Nice mornin’, pity there’s not much to surf…say 1 foot, with a weak 2 foot bomb set. Bondi seems all quiet…everybody is either on holidays and left town, or still recovering from the weekends Christmas parties. This week there will be nothing substantial to surf – take the mal out. It’s a typical summery week with micro wind dribbles.
Gallery Open Today – Monday 21st Dec
If you want to avoid the 10 million people xmas shopping in Bondi Junga, we’re open today (normally closed on Monday). Yep, the Aquabumps gallery is open 10am to 6pm Telephone 9130 7788. We still have plenty of frames ready to stick under the tree.
Surf’s Up – all girl surf Guide
As mentioned in my email the other day, there seems to be more girls surfing Bondi than there ever has been. If you’re a budding young Gidget, Lousie Southerden has written a book for you called “Surfs Up” – a girls guide to surfing. It’s only $33 and you can get it here online.
It’s been raining since I rolled outa bed and the surf is pretty uninspiring – so foto opps are minimal this morning….hence the random archival revival.
I’d say 2-3 foot at east exposed beaches (e.g Zee Bra)…the odd 2 footer at Bondi and barely anyone around. This weekend’s forecast is for no waves. Join in on the festive season parties and get a lil’ loose I say – ‘cause you won’t be surfing much for another week – absolutely nothing coming. Boo.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open today 10am to 6pm, same all weekend (we get asked this a lot). You can find us at 151 Curlewis Street, just up from Thai Terrific and snuggled between a TAB and a Civic video shop. Telephone 9130 7788…we’ve got plenty of stock that you can rock in and walk out with under the arm. View online Catalogue
Have a great weekend :: uge
I was down the beach pretty early this morning. Think it was 4:30am. Nuts I know. I tell you what though… there’s plenty of nudity down there at that hour. Upon arrival I saw 1 girl and 4 guys posing nude for photos in suspect poses. Looked like sumpin’ outa ‘Eyes Wide Shut’. Looking down the beach there was plenty more off it – inebriated skinny dippin’ straight from the bar to the rip in South Bondi. Weird.
NE Swell is up and Bondi is neglecting most it facing the wrong way. My call is 2 footers down at Bondi – surfable and fun but a bit small, especially when you know it’s 4ft around the corner, The bra should be decent, Whaley, Manly, Dee Why etc…all would be good today. If I had more time to drive – I would. High tide is 9:30am, low tide 4pm, max 33 degrees on the land – yew. Wind is going to blow big time – 20-25 knots later today….already pretty windy. Soak up the sunshine before the southerly change rips through tonight bringing rain & cooler temps.
8 more days of xmas shopping left – The Aquabumps Gallery, which used to be a driveway for a mechanics yard, is open today 10am to 6pm. So if you’re sneaking down for a dip, come do some Christmas shopping as we’ve got plenty of stock that you can take on the spot. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 02 9130 7788 View Online Catalogue

Definitely not a surfing day… Lake Bondi had a 0.5 to 1ft dribble…with the odd 2 foot freak set.
A pod of dolphins were having a Christmas party in the bay. They hung around for an hour or so, weaving in and out of surfers legs…puttin’ on a show.
The early morning clouds have now burnt off exposing 27 degrees of sunshine. Go swim. Do-it.
Tomorrow looks better for a wave as the NE swell machine kicks in and you should find 3 footers at most exposed beaches. Best wait until then.
If you want to see what the beach looks like 300 ft up, like my aerial shots, have a fly in this puppy, the Red Baron.
Enjoy silly season, uge
PS – Tonight watch Channel Ten’s 7pm Project, they currently broadcasting from Bondi…and the ‘Bumps has snuck in there for a story.
It’s small. Mainly just a shorey slappin’ on the beach. So small even Jono (AKA the mad professor) was soft sand jogging and not surfing. Now that’s small – that man can sniff a 1ft set out of Lake Bondi any day.
Mighty fine morning though, after the early clouds dissipated we’re left with clear sky heavens. Maximum of 24 degrees, NE winds 10-15 knots peaking at 20 knots later. High tide 8:10am, low tide 3pm.
How interesting, the charts are showing a small south swell on Thursday…until then you’ll need to go to an east facing beach like The Bra etc.
Well known north bondi chef, Peter Evans of Hugo fame, has launched his 3rd cook book in time for xmas called ‘Grill’. $50 including postage. Buy online
Random fact – Do you know that 80 million units of the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine have been sold since its introduction in 1994? Foreman, a champion boxer, pocketed 150 million dollars from those sales. Tidy.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open and well stocked. It’s too late to get custom made orders in time for xmas, but you can get unframed prints and we have hundreds of artworks in stock ready for you to pick up (from $35 to $3500). View our online catalogue here, or come see us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone: 9130 7788 and we can walk you through the whole process.
In stark contrast to yesterday we’ve got overcast skies, drizzle, onshore winds and 2-3 footers – oh, and a empty Bondi beach. Barely anyone around…as it’s no pretty picture down there. Maybe wait until it cleans up tomorrow. Small waves all week mostly in the 2-3ft range. Only 22 degrees on the land today, the coolest day of the week.
Mick Eugene Fanning has won the world tour at Pipe yesterday…after edging out his childhood mate Joel Parkinson. The aussies are back on top of the surfing ladder in positions 1 & 2. This is Mick’s second world title after his 2007 win. Well done Mick.
There are more girls surfing Bondi these days…more than ever…great to see. I reckon there was about a dozen Gidgets dominating the peak this morning.
The world’s smallest surfable waves are on offer this morning. Super infrequent, but who cares when the weather is this good. You should do something in the water today – it’s a cracker. A perfect 27 degrees – how are those readers back in London going? (about 5,000 people read this photo update in London)
Go now to the beach, ’cause NE is blowing and will up the ante to 23 knots later today.
No surf all weekend – full stop. Good beach weather though. Lube up the baby oil.
It’s 14 days until Christmas. You’re probably like me and haven’t even thought about what to get all your loved ones. Seeing there is no surf all weekend… best hit the shops. We’ve got around 300 frames in stock at the Aquabumps gallery, from empty Mentawaian tubes to aerial shots of Bondi. Surely sumpin’ has your name on it. Come see the gallery @ 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW, Telephone 02-9130 7788….open 10am to 6pm all weekend (just not open on Mondays)
I get asked a lot of questions, what camera, what housing, what settings, where surf, why am I so annoying…. Probably the most common question is where to stay in Bali, somewhere I can surf and the little lady can chill by the pool and spa – the perfect holiday. Well, you can’t go past Batu Karang on Lembongan Island (tiny island just off Bali). Dang. Wow.
Is it me, or is the water super blue down at Bondi at the moment? adios, ugios
PS – Pipeline Masters is on right now and it’s 10ft (and pumping). Watch Live footage right now (there goes your afternoon at work)
There is a little bump out there this morning…2 foot, sometimes a smidge bigger.
Conditions were clean, still and humid. 2 peaks on Bondi were packed with early morning frothers.
I saw some good ones, and a lot of not so good ones. Mostly weak and fat (burgers).
Something cookin’ on Monday wavewise…but looks onshore. Not much else…
Hawaiian update – Eddie ran yesterday and Greg Long won it. Now all eyes are on Pipe, but it’s a lumpy 10-15 foot along seven mile miracle so the organisers have called a lay day. (basically it’s too big for pipe)
Have a good day..26 degrees. ::oggie (that’s how the Swedish backpackers say my name around here)
Bondi is on-snore today. The howling southerly is still with us making mince of anything rolling in. At least it’s not crowded and there is the odd 2-3 peak. Sometimes the wind can put up a little lip at Bondi…a nice change from fattie Bondi. Clouds and rain will clear by lunch, winds will swing back to a optimal NE and it will only hit 24 degrees today.
The prestigious Eddie Aikau Big Wave invitational is on today and you can watch it live here right now. Quite distracting really, so you might find it hard to get work done today. Also here are the finalist shots from Miss Bondi on the weekend, where Camille Pollett has been crowned Bondi’s 1st lady for ’09 with runner up Becky Lamb.
Random stuff – last month the Aquabumps website broke new traffic records. 100,000 unique readers hit the website in Nov 2009, this is excluding the 30,000 email subscribers…healthy numbers…thanks for your interest in my creepy corner of the web. 2010 will mark 11 years of this daily ramble!

Hot is probably the most outstanding attribute to describe today’s conditions. 35 big ones forecasted so a swim after work in the day-light-saving-hours will be a must. Surfing isn’t the best option today, as that southerly change last night didn’t blow long enough to create anything substantial – windwaves only on offer – 1 to 2 ish foot down at Bondi. Really gutless stuff. Tomorrow afternoon should be better as the wave period seems to increase (more push). The long range forecast is showing promise next Monday.

Until tomorrow, have fun. ugenius
I know I said there would be no waves over the weekend – and there were, especially last night (3ft)…well…sorry…it was a pretty localised swell and snuck under the radar. Today’s waves have dropped slightly but there are still fun ones out there. After a foggy, overcast start to the day we’ve been blessed with another bakin’ hot summer’s day.
Couple of peaks at Bondi, 2 very shallow banks producing waves in the 2 foot range – the rip was horrendous and hindering my water shooting today – only got a couple of shots!
NE winds will dominate and blow 15-20 knots (strong) whilst a lurking mild south change will cool things down later tonight. The buoys are calling a small spike in swell on Wed and some waves on Saturday – but nothing major.
Hawaii – a massive swell is about to hit. Woowee. It’s going to be off the hook. The Eddie? Looks like it’s going to over 20 foot Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – that exceeds the event’s required minimum for the event to run.
Silly season is here and Bondi is jammed packed these days. Yesterday was a MASSIVE day down the beach – half of Europe has arrived. There was a party on every street of Bondi last Sat. Well it’s Monday, so I’d expect quite a few of you are feeling sorry for yourself. I am trying out a detox diet from Eat Fit Food…which, I gotta say is working out quite nicely. 3 meals a day rock up to my front door every morning…with all kinds of healthy stuff that’s cleaning out the colon. Try it, it’s a local Bondi business.
At 6:30am there was barely a wave left from yesterdays decent swell (and no wind). At 7am a southerly change hit and blew the 1 footers into a spin…so it’s a no surf day now, tomorrow, Sunday, Monday and well – not much happening for quite some time now. Surely you’re rammed with xmas parties anyway. The winds are going to howl 25 knots later today and it’s only going to hit 25 degrees. Enough said.

It was an all star cast out there this morning – Wylie Moyes, Caleb Reid and Perth Standlick. The local guns flaring up amongst the 4 footers at Bondi. It was a shame Bondi’s banks weren’t putting up sections for the boys – most waves were pretty much flat. Somewhere must be going off right now. I’d drive if I had more time.
Perfect weather – 24. Winds WSW early, then NE 20 knots. Swell is on the decline. Low tide 4:10pm, high tide 9:30am.
Slam Volleyball Festival kicks off its 10th anniversary tour at Palm Beach Sydney on 13th Dec. You’ll need to get sorted if keen – Palmy’s already sold 69 of a total 96 teams! More info
Got a pile of email about my Cocky and Kookaburra shot yesterday. Hell, even the Daily Telegraph ran it today. To answer all your questions in one hit…basically I was just wondering down the beach and a Cocky was fighting with a Kookaburra mid-air. They then landed on the poo pipe exhaust at South Bondi, and the Cocky lost it, whilst the Kookaburra stayed composed, and refused to move off the pipe. Wow, sounds like a kids book…but that’s all that happened folks, I shot 3 frames and got a lucky moment between 2 aussie birds…no photoshop treatments (does everything that is interesting have to be accused of Photoshop comping?) and I reckon I was there for 5 seconds (not sitting there all day). So no big story really. See photo
Rogue bombs are breaking out the back of Bondi this morning. I reckon some of those sets must be 8-9 foot. A lone wolf paddled out in the southern corner, only to return to shore moments later after getting slapped around. You’ve just got to be patient and wait until it calms down, which it will tomorrow. Until then, book yourself a holiday to Thailand – like that place.
On the weekend, Miss Bondi heat 2 was held at the Beach Road Hotel – you can see the shots here. Special thanks to our contributing photographers Steffen Burggraaf + Margit Selg.
Don’t forget you need to give us 3 weeks if you want to custom order something from the Aquabumps Gallery for Xmas. So the deadline is this weekend, I repeat the deadline is this weekend. Do it. You can view our artwork catalogue online, place an order and we’ll sort it all out for you – easy. Otherwise contact 02-9130 7788 if you have any questions about sizing, framing or freight. So it’s Tuesday afternoon, and you haven’t received an Aquabumps fix this week…you’re probably wondering what the hell is going on? Well, I’ve been moving around a bit and today’s photos are from Maya Beach, Phi Phi (that’s Thailand kids). Why? Well I won’t go into detail but ended up spending the afternoon there yesterday – in the 35 degrees of Thai killer heat. And I am not talkin’ about that Patong heat. It’s seriously steamy over there.
You might recognise Maya Beach, even if you’ve never travelled to Thailand…in 1999 it featured in the movie “The Beach” where Leonardo Di Caprio went a little mental. All I can say is that it’s real…and looks just as good as the postcards/movies. The colours were phenomenal. Impossible to take a bad photo of the joint. If it had a peeling right hand barrel off those big twin rocks, I’d call it my number 1.
Well back to reality now…and I have started chippin’ away at my inbox for the afternoon, whilst Bondi is 6 foot, raining and horrendously onshore. Go seek protection for a wave, maybe Manly, but don’t get too excited – it’s mush.
Onshore until Wednesday afternoon ::later::uge
Hi there. Wow. Special morning. If you slept in you’d be kicking yourself as not only was it bakin’ hot and clear skies… that expected swell spike arrived and produced fun (not perfect) waves in the 2-3 foot vicinity. Ok, so it’s quite weak and fat due to a 7 sec wave period, but throw on some boardies and you’ve got yourself a good time.
If you’ve missed the morning session there will be nothing left this afternoon – it’s dropping off – fast. The weekend looks worse – I reckon 0.5ft all weekend…no good for the Bondi BoardRiders comp. Maybe go see heat 2 of Miss Bondi at the Beach Road hotel on Sunday 2:30pm.
Or..start some Christmas shopping at the Aquabumps gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach. Telephone 9130 7788 (open all weekend 10am to 6pm). We’ve hotted up our online buying website so you can size things up, and even check out what it would look like on your lounge wall. Fancy.
Have a great weekend, uge
There’s not a lot doing down the beach this morning. Overcast skies dominated, the usual suspects scrapped over a 2 foot left towards the middle and the ‘dozer is out pushing sand up against the concrete wall to conceal any exposed concrete reo.
Swell is from the ENE so I reckon the Bra might have a bit more punch…but it’s still tiny and weak. Wave period is 5.6 (that’s wind chop). Little spike tomorrow morning before a weekend of micro conditions. Mostly sunny conditions with 25 degrees forecasted – nice.
Winds will blow later today – 20 knots of Nor-easterly.

4 Short Surf Movies at BRH
Tracks Mag are puttin’ on 4 short movies this Saturday night in Bondi. Rob Norman is featuring his piece on our two hot young stars, Perth Standlick and Wyllie Moyes called “At the End of the Day”. Storm Surfers will also be showing their latest batch from Tassie (Carroll, Clarke-Jones and local lifeguard Kobi Graham) by Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan. This Saturday the 28th November, 8pm, Beach Road Hotel.
Touchy footy has arrived to the beaches of Sydney…click here to read more
For a small east swell there sure were plenty of waves on offer this morning. Bondi was only 2 foot, but decent. A left in the middle provided some fun ones all the way to the beach and a southern corner right had the odd section. With warm weather, no wind and plenty of sunshine there’s every reason to get down for a dip/surf.
Max 25 degrees today, winds will blow 15 knots NE later, water temp. 20, high tide 3pm, low tide 8:45am.
Some of my mates say I haven’t been the same since Vooey reef took a divot out of my head. Maybe lost a bit of brain matter…who knows…but I definitely know I saw a Werewolf down at Bondi this morning attempting to paddle out in a fancy suit and I don’t eat mushies.
So you want to do your Christmas Shopping at the Aquabumps gallery…well, I just want to reiterate that you will need to place custom orders soon and give us a 3 week production lead time. You can check out our online catalogue here (which we’ve revamped), size things up, check out prices and search for something suitable…oh hell, just call Aimee on 02 9130 7788 and get em a gift voucher. We’re open every day 10am to 6pm (except Monday) and you’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (behind the Bondi Hotel worksite). Still lost? Map
Enjoy today. It’s good outside. How strange was that 9am mist?
The onshores have turned on, making a mess of Bondi this morning. The odd 2 footer was on offer down there with very few out. Pretty wet and grey day. Some say this is Bondi at its best and the only time you’ll get a wave without 5 others on it.
Caleb Reid, probably one of the most talented shredders in the eastern suburbs paddled out after 8 weeks on the injury bench. The 21 year old is lightning fast, originally from Bronte and now moved to Bondi…you’ll be seeing a lot more of him…
Wintery day, 22, the coldest day of the week, but the heat will return Wednesday and cook on Friday to 34 degrees. Surf looks disappointing until next Monday.
Miss Bondi ’09
The search for Miss Bondi started last Sunday…yep, heat 1 photos are up on Aquabumps…fellas try not take the server down. It’s on again this Sunday at 2:30pm, at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi. See Photos

Surfaid are having a party this Wednesday “Surfing Suits” 25th Nov at 7pm til late. It’s being held at the Supper Club and Kaboodle, Kings Cross. For an official invite donate $50 to SurfAid International. Special guests such as Occy…see you there.
If the sweltering heat of last night didn’t keep you awake last night, the search party choppers sure did. 2 guys went for a swim last night, 1 split off and decided to swim ashore – then went home to return to the couch (without telling his buddy)…meanwhile, the lone swimmer called a full scale search – rescue choppers (x2), police boats, ambos, police where in full force. I reckon that search would have costed 30 gees at least. Moral of the story – if you’re planning a night time bay lap, maybe let someone know. And maybe night time isn’t the best time to do so.
Back to waves, well the southerly has rolled in to cool the furnace of yesterday. 25 knots of blow kicked up some wind waves for the early – but it’s super mushy and random. The fact that no one was out says it all. Onshore and cool again tomorrow. In fact this whole week doesn’t look that great for surfers.
Best book your Mentawai boat trip on Tengirri. Go early season 2010 and avoid the crowds. www.tengirri.com or ant
The maximum temperature forecasted for today is 30 degrees…but it felt that hot at 6:30am this morning so maybe the Bureau boys have some broken dials. It is hot. Damn hot. You’ll break into a sweat just walking down the hill this morning…so a swim/longboard is the essential cool off.
New swell direction today, NE. Swell period is low and wind waves on offer 1-2ish feet. Bondi is neglecting the swell source and will be better served at exposed beaches such at Maroubra today.
The weekend looks hot again with a steamy 39 degrees forecasted for Sunday. Still NE swell and NE winds…you might find the odd local wave at certain times – Sunday being bigger than Saturday – but all in all – it’s a beach weekend.
If you’re coming down to Bondi, I’ve hung some new artworks on the gallery walls…the helicopter shots have been replaced with some good old wave shots taken from the drink. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach Map Telephone 02-9130 7788. 1st Heat of Miss Bondi is on this Sunday (22 Nov) at the Beach Road Hotel. Starts at 2:30pm.
I have new toys from Canon…some great new glassware.
Cookin’ with gas out there today…even though quite a few crew said it’s not that great as they came out of the water (I’m still landlocked until stitches heal from my recent reef lobotomy – oh diddums I hear you say).
This is the last day of this week’s strong south swell before switching to a fruity NE swell. Enjoy the 3 foot peaks around south facing beaches. Winds: strong 20 knots Nw/NE winds, low tide 5pm high tide 10:30am. Water warm 20 degrees suitable for boardies and a vest.
2010 Mentawai season is nearing. I’m heading out there early in the year before most of the boats have started their season (uncrowded). There is a still a few early season spots left with the knuckles on Tengirri – in my opinion, one of the best operators in the islands. See their website, www.tengirri.com or email ant
I got a pile of email about this shot from Monday night’s storm…well, you can buy it here
Best be outside today – the southerlies have stopped. The weather is 25, mild, warm and just nice. The waves are 3-4 foot, dead south swell and a hell of a lot cleaner than yesterday with northerlie grooming breezes. To top it off the crowds are minimal out at Bondi and there are peaks all over the joint. Spread yourselves up and down this coastline, I am sure you’d fine some decent waves today to distract you from your cubicle duties.
Enjoy :: uge
That violent southerly change last night was something special. Spectacular. A sausage cloud rolled over from Tama bringing rain, lightning and a serious gale. Unfortunately it’s ruined the clean surfaces of yesterday and halved the swell to the 4-5 foot range. Bondi still wasn’t much fun and not handling the larger conditions – pass.
Tomorrow the winds go north again – dang – so the good times will roll.
Jhyimy “Two Hats” “Bondi Caveman”
It’s no secret, Jhyimy “Two Hats” Mhiyles (or Peter James Paul Millhouse), 54, has been charged with sexually assaulting a 21 year old girl on Sunday 1st Nov 2009. He denies the allegations and has been refused bail. Jhyimy “Two Hats” is the guy that lives on the cliffs at South Bondi that cameo’s in most of my morning shots. He’s been living up there for 10 years…well, a mate of mine Paul shot a video of him on his last night up at the cliffs – only a couple of hours before the alleged incident. See Video
PS – my head is fine. Thanks for all the emails. I’ve never hit the reef so hard with my head before. Out of the water for 7 days.
WOW. Sorry about the late update – I have a good excuse this time…
A dead south ground swell has come up strong overnight, and is in full swing. Between 10am and 1pm it was pounding our coast hard. Bondi is completely useless with this size, as was most of the surrounding beaches…so a little drive was really the only option. So today’s pics come from a slabbin’ reef, which was insanely heavy around 11am. My call would be 6-8 foot solid sets. Really difficult getting a decent shot in the water (ok I muffed up) so my pics won’t best demonstrate what is actually happening out there. Took out a wide angle lens, and pretty much swam in circles for 2 hours – well – before a macdaddy set drove me into the reef giving me 5 stitches…note to self, use a longer lens when there’s plenty of water moving (on very shallow ledges).
It will halve by tonight and swing onshore for tomorrow (southerly change coming 2nite), but Wed should be fun and in more control.
Have a good day. 31 degrees out there and 10,000 people on Bondi beach bakin’ it up.
Adios, ugios (with a little chip in the scone)
Sydney’s cooling south changes are spectacular. You know when it’s a steamy hot day there is a fair chance of a radical blow later in the afternoon. Within minutes the beach transforms from a postcard like dreamy afternoon, to howling onshores, rain and a deserted beach – like last night around 6pm.
This new south change didn’t bring any waves with it – that’s for sure. 1ft-chop-hop is on offer and nobody is biting. Forget-about-it. Wait for next week, where Monday to Wednesday is looking mighty fine.
This weekend looks dire for surfing. Better weekend just to hang down the beach as we’ll hit high twenties and the water is a salubrious 20. MONDAY IS GOING TO BE 36 BANGING Degrees – might have to get the chopper out for the early on Monday morning.
Single Fin Classic Wrap up
The 5th Beach Road Hotel Single Fin Classic was held last Saturday. 96 surfers competed in the 2-3 foot waves, with a large contingent of old Bondi surfers flying in from interstate and overseas to compete in the Masters Division. As always a great display of surfing was turned on with a very high standard from the first round. With the tunes on all day, including live band To The Next in the afternoon, the hill was packed with spectators and surfers. An unscheduled appearance by the Wu Tang clan on stage with the band was a highlight of the event closing the final stages with everyone up and dancing.(Read Adam Gibson’s take on the day)
Good to see everyone chip in and make it work for the surfing community with all money raised going to Bondi Boardriders club. Organisers Ben and Beau are especially grateful to Rick Scott, Grant Walker, Al Tucker, Catherine Davies, Helsy, Christie, Angie, Georgia, Q Sevastos, Carly Walker, Stodsy, Charles Cowan, Cooper and Bush, Big Tommy, Hideous Creature, Reg, Adam Gibbo, Cisco, Pete McGregor, Platty, Vuko, Bucky, Pama, Blake, Matt Dirt, the Beamie bros, Eddie Scott, and Zane Johnston. Plus all the sponsors too: Beach Road, Krack, Surf Culture, Gracie Jiu Jitsu Bronte, Electric, Dakine, Lost, DVS, Totally Adult, Excel, and Greenstuff.
The good weather keeps on bangin’ on. Top of 28 today, but the clouds will roll in with a late southerly change bringing in a possible thunderstorm.
Perfect day for a dip (with the camera)…1 footers on offer, and for some strange reason I saw a shoulder high smoker crank to the beach, but it was a 1 off so don’t freak out.
No swell until next Monday where something is cooking at South face beaches.
Sunday 15th Nov – Big yogi day out
Yoga Aid Challenge is on this Sunday at Sydney’s Botanical Gardens (8:30am to 11am) then a concert in the evening at the Bondi Pavilion (6:30pm). All ticket sales going to charity. More info
Not much doin’ down the beach this morning. Drove around to a few beaches and then returned back to Bondi to find the only rideable wave was 1 foot, with infrequent 1.3 foot sets. Looks pretty flat for a while as the new season kicks in.
At 6:30am it was jaw dropping to watch the pre-work-crowds go nuts with exercise. The beach was a hive of activity, yoga, tai chi, soft sand jogging, walking the dog, bootie camps, personal trainers…phew – we’re in full swing to shed the winter excess baggage.
A lot of people are asking me about our recent Manly chopper shoot – and when the images are going to be up – well, sorry, we’re onto it. Shot about 1,000 images and just sifting through them.
30 degrees on Sunday. How good ::uge
Cracker morning down the beach…sat down there for nearly and hour, barely saw a wave come through above your knee caps and then Justin paddles out and BAM! pulls out some aerobatics. So I guess is must be surfable, but you’d have to be extremely patient. Perhaps 1 decent 2 footer every hour. Perfect day for a swim before work though – looks like thousands of people agree with me.
The swell direction is ENE, so places like the Bra would have more to offer than south facing Bondeye. Land max 24 degrees (even though it feels that hot already), Mostly fine conditions. NW winds, swinging NE 13-18 knots later today. High tide 3:20pm, low tide 9am. Nothing on the swell radar – small for another week.
The new lifeguards down at Bondi aren’t too shabby. Looks like the boys have headed off to Hollywood to pursue their tv careers and we’ve got a team of female lifeguards straight off the Baywatch set. Bet there’ll be a few fake rescues this summer.
Manly tsunami? A study has found that continental shelf movements could send a tsunami to Sydney that would swamp the low-lying suburb of Manly. More Info

Today is shaping up to be a nice day… early morning cloud dominated the scene around 7am – but all good now. The winds are light making for some clean conditions down at Bondi. At 10am the sunshine is out bakin’ (max 24). Bondi has gone all quiet as the masses make their way into the big smoke (yes!). Perfect time to slip down the beach, sample the odd 1 to 2 footer on a fat slab of fibreglass…It’s not fantastic, just breaking, but a real nice day.
Big Wednesday is showing tonight at Ivy’s outdoor cinema. Dine under the stars, what the surf cult film and have a drink – all for $35. Phone 9240 3000 (Ash Street Cellar, Ivy, Ash St. Sydney 2000) – after sunset. More info on the Outdoor Cinema @ Ivy.
Bondi cracks me up. There is ALWAYS something going on down there in the morning. Well today started like most others of this week – 2-3 foot onshore slop, overcast skies, Jono + Wal + Kirby + Andrej were out ripping (the usuals)…vmmmmpt…hang on, a giant transformer figure (25 foot high) is plonked on the beach (no idea why)…then…eh?…was that a couple going for gold in the car park – yep….confirmed…wow…they’ve probably just rolled out of the Bondi hotel. Summer silly season is here in Bondi. No helicopters trying to fix sculptures though – morning off.
Don’t get too excited about surfing today. The onshores are making a real mess. Sunday looks to be clean. Saturday the Bondi Single Fin classic is on and I strongly recommend you coming down to watch it – it really is hilarious and one of the best days in Bondi. 70’s outfits, 70’s dancing, 70’s boards…
The Aquabumps gallery is open all weekend as usual 10am to 6pm. Come see Sculptures by the Sea and finish in the gallery. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach Telephone 9130 7788.
Using a new lens today – Canon F1.4 24mm – hot!
Even though it’s onshore – there is a decent little wave out there this morning.
A fickle shallow bank was throwing out the odd tube section…but you had to pick the right double up.
I’d say it’s 3 foot, E/SE onshore, High tide: 10:30am, low tide 5:10pm
Sun popped out for about 10 minutes before a black storm cloud rolled over and now seems settled. Only 20 degrees today.
Helicopter off Mark’s Park has been hovering around for hours now (hate to foot that fuel bill). Have no idea what they’re up to with that tow rope. Any ideas?
At 11am today, down at Bondi, Rasta and his buddies complete their 700 kilometre sea kayak paddle from Byron. Why? To raise awareness about Japanese Whaling in the southern oceans. There is a mass paddle out organised, and everyone is invited. That’s like in about an hour or so…so get down there. Meet at the Lifeguard tower. More
Surf Cult Film, Big Wednesday, will be showing at the Ash St Cellar next Monday night. $35 = movie + tapas + drink more info
The overnight south change has put out the fire of yesterday’s soaring temperatures (thankfully). How about that heat yesterday. Madness. Cooking. Like standing in an oven. There would have been a whole lotta sweaty, thirsty, frocked up Melbourne cup punters with massive-dehydrated hangovers today.
Drink water. Plenty.
With the cooling south change came wind and wind-waves. Bondi was 2-3 foot this morning – bit skanky and random – but surfable. Fair crowd out there already.
After inspecting the charts, I can safely say there is going to be waves for the next 5 days all falling in the 3-4 foot range (from the south). The problem is the wind, which looks to be mostly onshore. Saturday looks 3 feet and potentially north-offshores for the Single Fin Classic down at Bondi (good).
SMH reports that a man was charged with sexually assaulting a 21 year old girl down at Bondi beach last night
Transparentsea arrives in Bondi tomorrow. (Rasta and crew paddling from Byron to raise awareness about Japanese whaling). Big paddle out 11am tomorrow – everyone welcome to support just grab a board
Radiator is doing Aquabumps readers deals – short sleeve vest for $73, long sleeve $83 order direct from manufacturer online
Check out this panoramic zoom shot of Sculptures by the Sea View
Alcopop – yep that’s my pick for the big race today. I don’t have much of a clue though so don’t invest the grocery money. Good luck punters.
Incredible morning, warm and humid as we head to a top of 37 degrees today. That’s no typo – 37 degrees today. Take the day off, enjoy the cup and go for a swim.
You wouldn’t think there was a wave out there today (looked flat) – well, every 15 minutes a set rolled through that was surfable. Say 1-2 foot…but hey, better than nothing.
Sculptures by the Sea has started for another year. The small path between Bondi and Tama is jam packed. 5am in the morning is the best time to view the art creations – some interesting stuff this year.
Bondi got flash mobbed last Friday. I got tipped off early, waited an hour for it to start and had to get back to work…didn’t think much of it…but then checked Youtube and 100,000 have viewed it! So I thought I’d throw another 30,000 at it – check it out
You’re invited to paddle with Rasta and the Transparentsea crew at Bondi this Thursday 5th November. Word on the street is they’re trying to gather 1,000 surfers for the paddleout.
Rasta and the Transparentsea team have paddled sea kayaks 700km from Byron Bay to Bondi to raise awareness about Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. On the morning of Thursday 5th November they invite all surfers to help them paddle the final leg into Bondi Beach. Grab any craft you can and celebrate this monumental voyage. Where? Bondi Beach, meet at the Rescue Tower. When? 5th Nov. 10am for an 11am paddle out. Who? Any able body with a board that floats! More information contact JJ Transparentsea media manager +61(0)421 384 431 www.transparentseavoyage.com
Not much to write about this morning. There was no light, no sunrise and no waves – bit like my mate Sam – personality-less. (only kiddin’ pal)
Yesterday was an incredible beach day though. Half of Sydney was down there – oh boy – spinning rims, big mufflers, bangin’ stereos, big sunnies and baby oil were the order of the day. Bondi was in chaos and is still recovering. I’ve never seen the traffic banked from Bondi to Bondi Junction before. Wow.
The chopper ride yesterday wasn’t our greatest – the howling northerly wind wasn’t ideal. Some protected corners at Freshie, Manly and Curly were the focus and here are a few snaps from that mission. More coming. (takes time)
Have a great week. 35 degrees tomorrow. Wow.
It’s quite disturbing sitting on a patch of grass at South Bondi, watching 3-4 foot sets close out straight along the whole beach. What a waste. All this swell and nothing doin’…If only we had a reef or a decent bank that could hold waves over 2 foot.
The long period ground swell has arrived kids. But you’ll need to pack the wagon and head to another beach that is working.
I don’t think this swell will hang around long, as it is peaking right now. 2 footers tomorrow.
The Bird is flying North…
Yep, chopper shots over Manly way…
And you can be a part of it…this SUNDAY, 1 NOV 12-1pm
If you live over Manly way, we’re coming over with the helicopter this Sunday between 12pm to 1pm. Loads of people always come into the Bondi gallery, and say a) shoot more northern beaches please or, b) wish I was in one of these shots – just one of the little people in the crowds. Well, here is your chance…should the weather behave we’ll be hovering over Freshy/Manly for a 1 hr shoot, capturing similar stuff to my recent AIRBORNE exhibition that has been well received. Tips to get in a good shot: Do something different…swim out into deeper water…bright towels (so you can find yourself later), umbrellas etc. Looks like 27 degrees and fine for a beach day, hope the colours come up like this
Have a great weekend :: uge
