This is the last Aquabumps update for 2010. I’ve taken thousands of shots and today I’m showing you some of my favourites taken this year. You can see more of 2010’s best at this link.
It’s been a big year. I still spinout when I think that this little update started in 1999 just sending a few mates some pics from the beach. Now we have over 40,000 daily readers (both on our website and emails) and growing strong – we also have 16,000 followers on our Facebook page (which only just started!). Firstly thank you all for reading these updates. For real. Quite often I get people in the gallery saying they’ve been opening up Aquabumps every day for 10 years…which just blows me away that an illiterate salt crusted photographer can keep your attention for that long. So thanks honks. Big thanks.
Also, thanks to the staff of Aquabumps. It’s not just me anymore… thanks Christian, Gloria, Ming, Aimee, Lox, Mischee, Kelvin for freeing me up so I can work on my tan, travel and shoot pictures. Thanks to the Aquabumps brains trust (a group of people that help make the big business decisions, for free – you know who you are). Thanks to our mega sponsors Telstra, Canon and Land Rover – with their support we can keep this service free and helps up develop some of our bigger ideas. Thanks.
Happy New Year.
Got some huge things planned for 2011. My mission is to show you new angles that you’ve never seen before. Especially on Bondi…which I’ve been shooting now for over 11 years!
No more updates for a couple of weeks and the gallery is shut until 4th Jan 2001.
Out :: uge
(my name is actually Eugene. I’ve been called Uge since childhood and is pronounced Yooj – but you can call me whatever you want)
Hiya. There’s a little wave out dere. Bigger and cleaner than yesterday. Not smoking but surfable(ish). A few of the larger 3 foot sets were showing promise, but the banks weren’t doing much. I reckon it will improve with the incoming tide. High tide 10:20am, low tide 5pm.
1.5 days left of shopping – If you’re stuck for Christmas presents how about a gift voucher to our gallery (just call 029130 7788) or buy the latest Aquabumps Book. You know the drill by now…we’re open 10am to 6pm today and 10am to 5pm tomorrow (then closing down for 9 days! I need to get a wave for myself!) You’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026. Still lost?
This is the 2nd last daily for 2010…2011 will mark 12 years of Aquabumps. Yes, you read right, 12 salt crusted years. Freaks me out just writing that. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our major sponsors that keep this daily email free for you all and allow ‘Bumps to do bigger and brighter things – Telstra, Land Rover and Canon…thanks.
Bye, uge (pronounced yooj)
An severe drop in swell energy and early morning southerly has ruined your plans of a good wave this morning. After yesterday’s delights we now have 1-2 foot onshore junk. Pass. Nice day though, 25 degrees.
Tomorrow ‘may’ have a little bump with NE winds, other than that it’s going to be a Christmas of boozing, eating and sleeping (no surf). Enjoy.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm today + tomorrow, but 10am to 5pm on Friday Xmas Eve. After that we’re shut for 9 days….phew. You’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (that’s right behind the Bondi Hotel construction site). We have Aquabumps books that cost $150, small mounts, small frames and all kinds of stuff to stick under ya tree.
Have a good day, uge
What a difference 24hrs can make. We’ve gone from Lake Bondi flatness to 3-4 foot pumps in 1 day – hooray! Finally something to wet your appetite…it’s not perfect, bit fat, could be bigger, but in comparison to recent times – gold! So many south facing beaches would have a little wave today…if you’re already on leave I’d bake it out of town. Today is the peak of it as it dwindles into Christmas day flatness…
The weather and water is bang on…25 degrees and perfectly sunny, offshores, and 20 degree summery water. Just the perfect beach day.
So…you’re probably frantically collating your Christmas presents…I hope we can make it easier for you. We received our second shipment of Aquabumps books. Phew. Buy them online here today and if you’re in Australia you will get them before Christmas day (delivered on the 23/24 Dec). BUT, you must be in Australia and order today (overseas takes 5 days). Also, you must get them delivered to a location where someone can sign for them e.g. An office. Sorry, but we can’t call on approach, there is just too many. But you can track it online once we send you a TNT tracking code. Order online, and if your shipping address is different to delivery, just pop it into the Special Instructions. Of course they’re also available along with hundreds of ready to grab artworks in the Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Telephone 9130 7788 and we’re open 10am to 6pm every day (closing 5pm on xmas eve).
Very rare to see the ocean this flat. I know sometimes I say it’s tiny, or flat and there still is ankle biters or knee cappers….well today when I say it’s flat, there’s basically no movement in the ocean at all…like a lake…caputo…zip…nada…pancakes. It actually looked quite odd…can’t remember the last time it was this static.
The wind is angry and howling 35 knots from the west. It’s cold on the land but much warmer in the water. The lifeguard tower has 20 degrees for water temp. Impressive. Fortunately the waves return tomorrow as a south swell kicks in (3 footers). Looks like fun. Nobody around…looks like everyone’s split already. Not us, the Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm all week until xmas eve.
Xmas pressie idea – What about a flight above Sydney’s beaches on the Red Baron with Joel – upside down of course.
Good bye, :: uge
There was a little sumpin’ flappin’ around out there, but I didn’t think much of it. The left more towards the middle had the odd wave worth slaying, other than that – junk. At least the water temperature has come up.
So the dribbles of this east swell will dissipate as the day progresses. The weekend is pretty much flat and unsurfable…join in the festive celebrations or go Christmas shopping. Only 1 week left!
The Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm every day leading up to Christmas. We’re not taking custom orders as xmas is only 1 week away, but you can either a) buy from a huge range of stock in the gallery at the moment – come in b) buy a book either in the gallery or online. If you’re in Australia, order online today and you will get it Monday/Tuesday via courier. But you MUST give us an address that someone can sign for it.
An old mate has a winery in Margaret River – Edwards Wines. They make an amazing drop and will freight direct from cellar door. Join their wine club and enjoy 25% off.
Have a great weekend.
Au revoir, Eugene
Nice’n’calm, still morning. Barely a ripple to surf and yep, there’s 10 human torpedo’s in the southern corner causing chaos. I reckon it’s more dangerous today than 6-8 foot days. Those china made mini mals can kill.
It’s hot’n’sticky 28 now, but a south storm is approaching. Can feel it getting darker as I write this. Amazing sunrise for the real early people. Amazing colours and I reckon I missed the peak of intensity.
Bondi cracks me up at this time of year. The place is dominated with tourists looking to party every night. This morning someone pitched a tent at south Bondi, like a 6 man palace, whilst others were face down in the sand littered along the beach…not moving an inch as the sun rose. They’re quite game, that sand rake guy is pretty loose on the steering of his machine.
Swell comes up a smidge today…be good to see some decent waves but the real deal isn’t until next Tuesday.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm everyday until xmas. We are closed 25th Dec to 3rd Jan – reopening 4th Jan. Come get em. 151 Curlewis St, Bondi.
Adios :: ugios
The plague of small swell continues. Bondi had 1-2 footers and is still very weak (windswell). Not much else to see down there – apart from a whole pile of people. Nice weather, max 27 degrees, maybe a thunderstorm later. Pretty flat until some good stuff arrives next Monday/Tuesday. Sit tight.
Most of you probably already know this – but last Friday, Tracks Mag editor and local Bondi surfer, Luke Kennedy, suffered a horrific injury to the throat whilst surfing Sunset on the North Shore – basically his board speared him in the throat. Luke (aka Bubba) only just got off the plane in Hawaii 10 hours before the accident…let’s hope for a speedy recovery fella…
We get a lot of questions at this time of year. Hope this clears up a few:
We still have our new Aquabumps Book for sale. Yes, we have stock. You can only buy it from us. Yep, us. Best way is to buy online www.aquabumps.com/book and get it delivered. But if you’re getting it delivered, it’s by courier, so put your work address in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS and leave us a phone number. Someone has to sign for it.
Books purchased in Sydney CBD will be delivered tomorrow if ordered today. Yep, good ay?
Interstate books will be there on Friday if ordered today…Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide etc…easy.
Overseas books will be delivered 5 working days in MOST cases, yes before chrissy if ordered today! But hang on, if you’re in the back roads of Alaska, it may take a little long – but you’ll have a tracking no. to see it coming and can hassle Fedex (not us). We ship the day of ordering.
The Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi is open 10am to 6pm every day leading up to Christmas. That’s 10 – 6 buddies.
You’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street, Bondi beach NSW 2026. Still lost? Our phone number is +612 9130 7788.
We have so much artwork in stock, I reckon you can do all your Christmas shopping in once place – here! Come in, relax.
Framed artwork orders taken now won’t be ready for xmas, but we can do a mini print or sumpin’ to give em on the big day. Unframed prints can be ready in 5 working days.
No I didn’t get a photo of you in a black wettie and white board 10 years ago. Sorry. (you’d be surprised how many times I get that one)
We use Canon cameras and lenses. They’re beaut. Have been using them for 12 years.
Have a good day, go outside in the sunshine.
It’s not often you’ll get a daily email from me this early – nup. I guess it’s a combination of no decent waves to photograph today and an abundance of early light for the insomniacs (me), so I’m ahead of my usual schedule. Yesterday the wind finally swung south, this is good. A) it means that finally the water temperature will rapidly edge closer to 20 degrees b) a small wind swell will start to break at South facing magnet Bondi.
Whilst the morning’s waves weren’t smoking, at least it wasn’t dead flat like recent times. (1 foot). It’s going to be a warm 25 degrees today but possibly a shower.
I’d like to say something really positive about the surf forecast – but I can’t. Don’t expect much to break over your knee caps, we’re bang in the middle of a flat spell. Time to work up the brownie points with your partner, long walks on the beach, fix dings, cook dinner, xmas shopping…stuff like that.
PS – here are the photos from Miss Bondi 2010 finals shot by Steffen Burggraaf
What a big weekend around the beaches of Sydney. Phew. Bondi was jammed packed. I’m talking Australia Day crowds – police on horseback, Oprah and Jack Johnson all visiting Bondi yesterday – no, Big O didn’t make it into the gallery (probably ‘cause of the traffic jams of spinning rims and hotted up Datsun 120ys). Sunday was a scorcher and everyone flocked to the beach too cool off in the arctic waters. (yes, I can spell it right sometimes).
Waves. What waves? There’s nothing to surf and nothing coming. Do something else.
Candy, who works in the bottom bar of the Beach Road and Leo’s new café won Miss Bondi 2010.
Bye for now. Same same tomorrow ::uge
Nice’n’clean’n’neat this morning after yesterday’s blow. Shame there’s barely any swell. It’s still from the NE, but struggling 1-2 foot. Seems to be dropping fast as well. The water temp. was the topic of convo this morning – it’s plummeted to a ridiculous temperature and colder than that freaky cold Sunday 2 weeks ago…my guess 15-16 degrees. Now I know that all you hell men from Scotland, Ireland, Alaska and Chile are going to email in and call us big girls, but that’s cold for this part of the world. Especially when it was 20 degrees just the other day.
Local surfer, Clayton Walker is battling a fight with cancer. As with all his previous challenges he is hoping for a complete victory, however this treatment is not only a physical drain but a financial one too leaving it to the local community and friends to help a mate in need. Tomorrow, 11th December 2010 will hold a fundraising day for Clay…a day of epic proportions involving a tag team surf comp at South Bondi followed by a big night. At 6pm, upstairs at THE BEACH ROAD HOTEL some great items will be falling under the hammer to raise money for Clayton’s treatment. If you are a sports buff or just want to grab some amazing Christmas presents then this is not to be missed. Up for grabs will be Mike Tyson’s signed gloves from his last fight, Taj Burrow autographed firewire surfboard, a host of other boards such as fomies, some artwork from us, Lee Stacey custom, Mctavish mal, Mountain Bike, and some very special signed rugby league, a-league and cricket gear and much much more. So smash open your piggy bank and let’s help a mate smash cancer.
If you can’t make the day and night and you would like to help, please make a donation into the following account:

If you’re around Bondi this weekend, we’re open 10am to 6pm selling artwork and books. Otherwise just order online. Remember Sunday is deadline for custom orders. Gallery : 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach t: 02 9130 7788 or contact us
Yesterday’s howling northerly stirred up some wind swell that hasn’t hung around long. Last night we had 3-4 foot, this morning 2-3 footers, and now 1-2 foot. Quite surprised how fast it dissipated. Oh well, hope you got a few whilst it was here.
The outlook isn’t looking that great. A rapid decline in swell height from here on, possible wind swell spike on the weekend – but real small. Volatile weather ahead, thunderstorms today, scattered showers but humid like Singapore, howling northerlies…all bit grey until a perfectly sunny Sunday…plan to hit the beach.
The Christmas shopping panic has started…another reminder, if you want custom made artwork from us (we also have plenty of stock), you have until this Sunday to place your order if you want it prexmas (22-24 Dec pickups). I know 99% of you haven’t even thought about Chrissy, like me, but we’re here to help and make it as easy as possible. Aquabumps Gallery 10am to 6pm every day leading up to xmas, 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (just up from Thai Terrific). Make a start, peruse our online catalogue, suss sizes and costs, order online or call us 9130 7788. Or just get a book.
Onya :: uge
P.S. Are you liking the 7 photos in the daily as opposed to 5? Please report any weirdness, slowness here.
I realise you’re probably gonna look at today’s shots and think I’ve gone a bit long on young Bronte surfer Caleb Reid, well, I have, but I also think it’s well deserved. Do you see many dudes tearing 2 footers?
The surf wasn’t spectacular earlier – but sufficient. Even less spectacular now that the northerly is up and roaring. But at sunrise there was the odd 2 footer with 3 foot set. I shot 21 year old Caleb on his home turf, where he seemed to know every bump in the bank, every pocket on the sets. Onya buddy. Ok, enough pumping his tyres up, there’s waves, bigger later but windier. Tonight it peaks and tomorrow it fades.
We’ve been getting a lot of phone calls about our Aquabumps book. Here’s some common questions:
Got any left? Yes. We do.
I’m in the city and want one, how long? Order before 1pm today and it will be on your desk before you go home tonight. For real. We use couriers, just get it delivered to your office and someone has to sign for it. Yes, someone has to sign for it so your home address ain’t gonna cut it (just put your office address in special instructions on check out if can’t change it, include business name)
I can’t enter my delivery address? I bet you’ve selected PICKUP FROM THE GALLERY (i.e. no freight). Click on your location on our map if you don’t want to come to downtown Bondi and pick it up.
Is it good? We think so. 208 big pages of Bondi. Otherwise use it to prop your monitor up, keep doors open with, make big paper aeroplanes – all good uses.
I’m overseas, can I get one before xmas? Yep. Order now to be safe though. Takes 5 days via Fedex to get to places like Europe, Uk, USA…if you’re in the back roads of Alaska I reckon Fedex may take a day or two longer.
Why so much mulla to freight it to Europe ($95)? The book is BIG and 3 kilos. Comes in its own box…c’mon, you’re worth it.
If you’ve got some coin left after buying a book, maybe pick up one of these for the summer break – ex-demo Scorpion rigid hull stink boat to access those breaks in Sydney no accessible by road. Insert drool.
Bye :: uge
Well look at that. A little south swell snuck into Bondi this morning amongst the morning heat. It’s only 2 foot, fat and weak, but rideable. It was hot early, like 25 degrees and the water has finally heated up a little – 19. The nor-eater will howl 20 knots today…creating a new wind swell and butchery our south swell goodness. Water temp will drop too. Much bigger tomorrow though and from the ENE.
High tide 10am, low tide 4:45pm. (see I do put tidal info in, sometimes)
The Camera Club is a group of super enthusiastic camera geeks like me who show their work quarterly at the Beach Road hotel in Bondi. Launch Party is this Thursday 9th Dec 7pm, Upstairs. The show is called “Fancy that!” “Sh#t for your lounge room wall”. See you there.
Have a nice day youalll :::uge
Summer has finally kicked in and silly season has begun. Scores of people hit the beach yesterday, and some didn’t leave (see exhibit A above, must’ve strolled at of the Bondi hotel at the wee hours, fallen in Hungry Jacks, then passed out on the beach). Onya buddy. Poor fella has probably only been in the country 24hrs.
Not only was the weather orn yesterday, so were the waves. A long interval East swell hit and provided fulfilment into the afternoon. I’d say some of the best waves I’ve seen in weeks and weeks. Hope ya filled those boots up. Unfortunately it was short-lived and already fading this morning (2-3 foot), still fun to be had in the sunshine. Enjoy.
Miss Bondi’s heat 2 was on yesterday at the sweaty Beach Road. Here’s Steffen’s shots backstage
Oh, and the Aquabumps Gallery is open today, 10am to 6pm. In fact we’re open every day until Xmas. So pop in and we can help you find some presents for the family. Our book is selling online, you can buy a copy and pick it up from the gallery if you like – or get it delivered to your door – where ever you are. (we have around 170 left from our 1st shipment, 2nd shipment may be late)
That is all :: uge
It’s always a nice surprise to have good weather after expecting dreary rain and greydom. Don’t always believe the hype. The water has that chilly bite to it, 17.9 degrees, but it’s nothing on last Sunday when we visited artic waters (sub 16). Ridiculous wasn’t it.
We’ve got some junky wind chop resembling waves…Bondi was 1-2ish foot, weak, dribbly, floppy and suited to very small people. Tama same with some serious wonk. Just go for a dip or longboard to satisfy your wave quota.
Now you’re probably wondering why tents are going up, semi-trailers unloading in the car park, and very fit people bouncing around Bondi this morning…well, the Kellog’s Nutrigrain Ironman series has hit our beach. The Legends (Leechy, Trevor Hendie, and The Bondi Rescue Team) will race at around 1pm which will also include Libby Trickett. The women are from 2:30pm – 3:30pm and the men from 4:45pm – 6:45pm.
Christmas shopping has never been easier at the Aquabumps Gallery. To start with, we’re open every single day leading up to Christmas. Yes. 10am to 6pm at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW. Also our popular book that was just launch is on sale for $150…it’s a big A3 book on “A Day at Bondi”. Aerial photos, water shots, big crowds, icy mornings – all in there, an easy pressie. The gallery is fully stocked with artworks from $150 to $3,500. Come see. If you want to order something custom, a specific image in a specific frame, better rock in this weekend – orders close in about 1 week.
Bigger and better today – and it’s not raining can you believe it! Still junkie, but you’ll find 2 footers around the traps, with the odd 3 footer at north exposed beaches. Wind is going to blow 25 knots from the NE and yep, the outlook is for more rain. I suspect this tiny spike is swell will be short lived and tomorrow will be much smaller again. Been a while since I’ve seen some quality waves around here.
On Sunday 5th December the Bondi to Bronte ocean swim is on. In its 10th anniversary the 2.4 km swim is one of Sydney’s classic races. Entry forms here
Also, on the Sunday 12th December is the BONDI BIG PADDLE. It’s a new event in the area featuring ocean ski’s, paddle boards, stand ups, and surfboard races. There’s 5 gees up for grabs, and Whippet and Liam are putting it on (Bondi Lifeguards). Onya boys. Go here to register I reckon the dash for cash, 250 metre paddle (on boards smaller than 6’6” is the one for me)
Have a good day, uge
It’s not often that rain hinders my morning shoot so much, that I have to show you something else to distract you from your busy day. But hang on, 3 days of rain in a row? It’s real wet and grey outside. Welcome to the first day of summer kids! Where the hell is it then?
Today’s pics are to remind you of what summer is really like – a collection of idyllic paradises that I’ve visited in the past 12 months. There is just so much out there to see…book a plane ticket. I just did! Life’s short and all that.
Forecast – Rain, rain and more rain until mid-next week. And I am not joking. Surfwise we’re getting some NE swell from here on, 1-2 foot mainly – nothing fancy. Go to Hawaii for surfing.
I’ve always wanted to get the tinnie out, drive out to a dead whale, which is being mauled by sharks, in the middle of the Indian ocean off Rotto, in my jeans of course, then jump on the whale’s back and pat the sharks. I mean really…what?
PS – hope you like 7 pics instead of the standard 5. Tell me if it goes slow for ya.
These wet, onshore Sydney mornings give me a good opportunity to sift through archives and find some gold. This morning I worked out that I’ve caught 48 flights this year (no medal please) and covered a lot of ocean from Maldives to Hawaii, shooting thousands of frames, most of which have barely been viewed and stuck on terabyte racks in the server room. Sometimes I think it’s better to view shots months after taking them. When you’re there in the moment, standing on a Hawaiian shore and a 10-12 foot set roars through, you’re kinda thinking – whatever – but when Bondi is dribbling 1 foot, and wet, then you have a different opinion.
Seeing you’re all beach people, I thought this might interest you…Basil Bangs are offering a WHOPPING 25% discount to our readers on their new range of beach umbrellas. Now these aren’t just any beach umbrella…I have one and the craftsmanship will blow you away. I’m not talking those umbrellas that snap in a gust of wind, or dagy 80s vomit patterns…we’re talking the Rolls Royce of beach umbrellas. Get one
Pray for sunshine and good waves (soon).
Enough ramble:: uge
Aloha. A very uninspiring morning down at Bondi today. Only one guy out, Mr. Enthusiasm Benny Back Door Lucas. He actually got 1 decent wave in the 15 minutes that he was out there. Spent the rest of the time drifting around. I dug around in my camera bag, looking for lenses I haven’t shot with in a while, trying to spice up the onshore greyness – but no success. Everything I shot, well, looked pretty drab. Seeing the Hawaiian winter surfing season has kicked off I thought I’d show some frames taken from my trip this year that hadn’t made it onto the site yet. Love the rock.
Not much else to talk about today. Oh, 1 more thing, in our recent survey we noticed that 64% of our readership is male. So here is the round 1 of Miss Bondi 2010 for that 64%…or have a look at this amazing idea from Rip Curl – it’s a shoot in the Sunway Lagoon Wave pool (Malaysia) with 52 Canon cameras in a line. Why? The Matrix 3d shift effect on aerials from Owen Wright, Fanning, Steph…hot!
Christmas is only weeks away. If you’re like me and not a fan of the big malls at this time of year, shop online with us. Books are available and artwork orders need to be in REAL soon to make a xmas deadline. If you’re overseas you’ll need to be all over it! Chop chop! Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW T 9130 7788. We’re open every day until Xmas (yes, today!)
Good bye. Let’s hope when the swell comes up later today we’ve got something to play with ::uge
Just like yesterday we’re stuck under this bit fat high pressurey and who’s complaining! Sun is bakin’, the wind is from the NE and the water is FROSTY. Looks like the mercury will hit 27 degrees and you’ll find messy 2-3 footers at northern exposed beaches. High tide midday, low tide 7pm.
Young master Perth Standlick has returned from Hawaii and stole the show at Bronte this morning. Always amazed at what the kid can do on weak, mushy chop hops.
A lot going on in the hood at the moment:
The 10th annual Bondi Short Film Festival is on this weekend, November 27th at the Bondi Pavilion. More info here and tix here
After 71 years on, the Miss Bondi event starts this weekend, 1st heat at the Beach Road Hotel, 2pm Sunday 28th November
Our gallery is open all weekend, that’s a big deal right? Our latest Aquabumps book is selling like hotcakes so come in and secure your copy 10am to 6pm Sat/sun
Good old typical Sydney summers day today. NE winds, NE wind swell in the 2-3 foot range and hot temperatures predicted. Might even hit 30. The beach is overrun with mad schoolies and the water is crystal clear. Simply put, a damn fine day – get outside. enjoy.
We’ll be stuck in this northerly wind/swell pattern for many days to come, so surfing is not a high priority at south facing Bondi. Suggest doing something else, stand up paddling, swimming, baking, snorkelling or not much at all (for the lucky ones).
Getting’ all fruity
Seeing everyone is down the beach getting fit for summer, might not be a bad idea to get your fruit’n’ veg delivered direct from the markets to look after your insides. The local boys at Fruitman Sam can deliver boxes for as little as $35. I get ’em weekly and rate it. www.fruitmansam.com.au or 0420 906 061
Bye :: uge
There is plenty going on down the beach, just not in the surf department. We’ve got wind chop coming from the NE…but it’s barely breaking. Tomorrow we should see an increase in size, from the north again (not suited to Bondi). Probably one of the busiest mornings down the beach in a long time. Exercise fanatics going hard at it…enjoy.
A reminder, the Aquabumps Books are for sale online and we’ll get it to you, where ever you are (including overseas).
I’m not gonna promise you much today, it’s damn small and dribbling on a bank in the corner. Mighty fine day though with blaring sunshine, little wind and warm temperatures. Moose from the Icebergs reckons its 18.8 degrees in the water (21 in the ‘Bergs pool). 18 degree water is chilly, so don’t be fooled by the warmer land temperatures.
Good weather all week, small waves. Maybe sumpin’ on Thursday as the Ne winds kick up a little wind bump.
Only a few more weeks until Christmas…drop by the gallery for an easy pressie. The Aquabumps Books are selling fast, buy yours online or in the gallery as there is still copies left (151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW 10am to 6pm telephone 02 9130 7788)
Good bye // uge
Finally the weather has turned a corner and warmer temperatures are here – but so is the typical small waves of summer. Bondi had a 1-2 foot bump with plenty out. The water wasn’t exactly warm and you still require a springy or wettie top. Not too bad though. A good wake up rattle.
The rest of the week looks dire for surfers. Not much will break above your waistline. The good news is that there will be sunshine all week long.
And so, we launched our Aquabumps coffee table book last week and it’s been very popular. We only have limited copies as our second shipment has been delayed and may not make it in time for Christmas (boo). SO, if you want one, buy online here to reserve your copy to pick up from the gallery OR if overseas we’ll ship it out to you via FedEx. The Bondi gallery is even open today 10am to 6pm (we’re normally closed on Mondays, but may be open Monday’s until Xmas). 151 Curlewis Street, Bondi Beach, Telephone 02 9130 7788.
Reminder: Christmas is nearing and custom framing orders will need to be placed and paid by 5pm on Sunday 12th December to get them in time for xmas. Browse our image catalogue, prices, sizes and even see what it looks like on your wall.
Ok, sorry – got a bit carried away there…have a good day, uge
So different to yesterday. It’s howling. Was actually difficult to keep the lens steady as the gale pulls it to one side. Bondi was 3-4 foot and full of mush. The odd wave showed potential…well… no one around so it’s all yours. Enjoy.
The Aquabumps Book
Finally, after 11 years of shooting pics, followed by a few more years of procrastination, I’ve released my 1st coffee table book. It’s big (A3 closed) and beautiful crafted on a offset press (top quality, none of this digi press stuff). It’s a book on Bondi called “A Day At Bondi” (surprise surprise) which depicts a whole day down at our little beach. From the morning sunrise glows to the masses in baby oil…shot from helicopters, the water and every other possible angle on 1km of beach. I am proud of this puppy, came up trumps, and it costs $150AUD. You can only buy it from Aquabumps either from the gallery in Bondi or online at www.aquabumps.com/book YEP, we are shipping globally using couriers like Fedex and they come in a neat little pizza box. 250 peeps rocked up to the launch party on wed, see shots.
The charter boats are wrapping up their season for 2010 now and it’s time to book your 2011 trip. Now I’ll tell ya a little secret, there been a lot of politics up there which I won’t go into, but next year is THE year to go. Trust me. Fewer boats, no hassles at Maccas in 2011. Our buddies on Tengirri (the boat I always go on) have a few spare trips left in 2011, but you need to get onto it. I’ve booked my slot. They’ll be gone by the time you get back from xmas hols. www.tengirri.com or email
PS – Gallery is open all weekend 10am to 6pm and watch Channel 9’s TODAY show on Sunday morning around 8am…we’re on showing the new book
Whoa, how about an early report this morning. Just got out of the water and there’s a neat little right chuggin’ into Bondi. I was quite surprised to see it breaking at all considering the charts revealed little or no energy.
The 12 year old groms thrived in the 2 footers. Thick hungry pack out though…and the water temps are decent. Expect a swell increase overnight as the direction tweaks more south ….high tide 6:40am, low tide 1pm. Top day as we head to 24 degrees.
Last night we launch the 1st Aquabumps book “A Day At Bondi”…yep, finally. You can order books online and we’ll pretty much send them anywhere in the world.
All info/costs/preview can be seen on this hot link.
Have a good day :: uge
One of the best things about getting up at sunrise every morning and heading down the beach is the people. At that time of day most people are positive, highly motivated and basically good people. Ok, there may be a few left over benders from the Bondi Hotel on a big night/morning, but they generally ask for a lighter and then roll over and pass out. I digress. This morning seeing the surf wasn’t that flash I shot portraits of anyone that came up for a chat. Some mornings I can chat to 20-30 people whilst shooting which is a great aspect of the ‘job’. It’s very social and there is no shortage of people down there that’s for sure.
Back to specifics….it’s 2 foot onshore, junkie, no one around and about a 3 out of 10. Wind and swell has gone SE so I’d say the water temp has come back from the artic weekend (say 20 today). Rain forecast and hopefully clearing, max 22.
We Love Waves

Sometimes writing a short couple of paragraphs about onshore, grey mush can be a little challenging. I don’t think you’d be too keen to head out there for a surf or a swim…the temperatures have dropped and it looks like a wet week ahead. Boo.
I am not sure what’s going on over in WA, but sharks are taking over the lineup. Cott main was closed on the weekend due to a shark strolling by…Then big bad boys down at Margies are keeping some of the local crew out of the water, and what…now Transits, Rottonest Island has a shark gnawing on a whale. Check these photos out – they’re amazing.
Kinda odd morning, incredibly still and foggy…Bronte had cool air, Bondi hot…weird. The weather is a bit like a A380 engine at the moment…unpredictable.
One things for sure…it’s about to POUR, big time. Even warnings of flash flooding this afternoon as up to 25 millimetres of rain is about to fall. Bring in the washing.
The NE swell machine continues, exposed locations are drawing 3 footers, nothing special, bit wobbly. South facing Bondi was 2 foot, small and best suited to beginners.
New Bondi based business iButcher delivers quality meats ta ya front door so no need to fight the grannies for a car park at Woolies. They’re offering Aquabumps readers a 10 buck credit…more
It’s just one of those mornings that you just can’t get enough of… One of the first warm mornings of this summer and everybody was up doing something down at Bondi.
Very small, insignificant waves on offer today – 1 to 1.6 footers at Bondi. Perfect for the 25 kilo groms. It should be 3 foot on Saturday and Sunday – best wait until then and just go for a dip today. The water is so much warmer…kicked up a couple of degrees. 20 degrees perhaps? (boardies is fine, wetties not required)
Art Sydney opened last night and looks amazing. It’s open midday to 9pm today…so if you don’t want to be a sweaty pub full of suits, come after work tonight. Download your complimentary ticket here (and bring with you for free entry). Come see us at the Aquabumps stand (F6), can’t miss us.
How about Kelly Slater, 10 time world surfing champion, and his 10 million dollar bonus that he has opted to take in Quiksilver shares. Slater now owns 3% of Quiky. Smart fella.
PS – these waterproof bags come in handy. I’ve swam ashore from a boat with my camera gear using them. Try em.
Small small. Smallest day of the week and really small at south facing bondi ‘cause the swell is coming from totally the opposite direction. Two options a) swim and enjoy this salubrious weather (27) or b) drive to a north exposed beach and have a play in 2 footers.
The weekend may have some fun 3 footers with warm weather (high 20’s). We’re definitely in our summer weather pattern as the charts predict a the stereotypical NE direction for days and days. (no good for us here in Bondi)
Design For Humanity
Billabong’s Design for Humanity is a celebration of fashion, art and music where all ticket proceeds benefit Unicef’s Pakistan Flood Children’s Appeal. The event will be held on 24th November 2010 at the Oxford Art Factory 38-46 Oxford St Darlinghurst. Tickets are available online at Moshtix and are 25 bones. Who’s up – the Vines, Operator Please, Purple Sneakers Djs also a Billabong swimsuit parade…do it. More info
Just a little reminder, get your orders into the AQUABUMPS GALLERY before 12th December to ensure a pre-Christmas Day delivery. Come see us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi t:9130 7788 or do it all online.
Check out the new Aquabumps charter boat for Mentawai season 2011. Who’s coming?
Going back to basics today…like the old film/broke days…just to keep me amused on an insignificant surf day…1 camera, 1 lens, 1 hour, only 10 captures (just like a roll of film – I could only afford 12 exposures when I was a kid)…and with these restrictions, this is what I saw this morning. Sensational warm morning, partly cloudy. Pretty stunned that I couldn’t get a car park (Tama or Bondi) at 6am. A tonne of new faces down there at a whiff of summer…all kick starting training to lose the winter excess baggage.
There’s been a lot happening in the surfing world lately. The tragic sudden death of ex-world champion Andy Irons – which gutted so many people, Kelly Slater makes history (again) winning 10 world titles and the Mentawais is hit by a Tsunami. What next? 50 foot faces in Ireland at the base of the cliffs of Moher and perhaps Bondi breaks a 400 metre right off the boot?
Christmas is nearing and we’re taking orders in the Aquabumps Gallery to put under the tree. Custom framing orders will need to be placed and paid by 5pm on Sunday 12th December to get them in time for xmas. There’s still plenty of stock (like 1,000 pieces to choose from), but if you want something special, something not common from our 11 year archive, then you best get into the gallery and start ordering to avoid disappointment. We’re open every day (except Mondays) from 10am to 6pm. If you need help, may we suggest :
1) looking at our online catalogue
2) use our fancy price/size selector to get idea of what you want and framing options
3) click on “Preview in your home” to suss what it looks like on the wall
4) order online, yep, don’t even have to leave your chair
5) we call you to confirm your order and have a chat about the surf
6) wait 2-3 weeks and you can pick it up from the Bondi gallery or we’ll courier to you
Hope you can make it to the opening night of Art Sydney…buy tickets here now.
Ok, back to work, uge
I’m a little confused at the moment (easily done, don’t worry). The weather is so volatile. It’s sunny one moment and time to hit the beach, oh, no sorry southerly change rips thru, hang on, then sunny again followed by an erupting lighting storm…looky there, NE/NW offshores early then a strong SE change then back to SW winds before a threat of yet another thunderstorm. Just confused myself writing that down and that’s just the past 24hrs.
The surf is quite simple though. Small 1-2 foot. Bondi struggle to ripple whilst around the corner had flimsy 2 footers. Nothing great.
Just looked out the window and it’s sunny again – enjoy it whilst it’s here.
This week is a good one to show your lady friend you’re not just a 1 dimensional grom. Maybe start off by walking the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition which is currently on between Tamarama and Bondi (and heavily featured in today’s images). Then really shine on with tickets to the opening night of Art Sydney – the big fair where 100 galleries huddle under 1 roof for the weekend. Aquabumps readers get 2 tickets for 70 bones ($30 off) to the Opening night this Thursday (11th Nov) 5pm – 9pm at Royal Hall of Industries Moore Park. Buy here
Enough dribble, : : u g e
The swell direction has changed overnight so you’ll see no action at Bondi today…need to pop over the hill. There was good little waves yesterday wasn’t there? I found some gold out of town (nope no pics, had to sample a few for myself).
The sun is now blaring and finally a decent warm summery morning…but it looks like rain this week and this afternoon. Warm temps throughout, Monday 27, Tuesday 25, Wednesday 26, Thursday 26, Friday 28 and a banging 29 on Saturday. All week we will have NE swell like today, peaking tonight before declining to 1-2 footers.
By now you’ve probably heard, Kelly Slater has made sporting history – 10 world titles. Yes TEN! He sealed the deal on the weekend at Puerto Rico where he amassed enough points to move out of reach from the remaining contender Jordy Smith and collect the 2010 ASP World Title, culminating a 20-year effort. Amazing. Just amazing.
Have a great day before the thunderstorms arrive, uge
Not even Merrick’s media stunt of swimming across Bondi could get me down there this morning. It was bucketing down and a good one to sleep in…onshore 2 foot slop can be a little demotivating.
Rather than subject you to 5 photos shot from the car with the windscreen wipers hammering, here’s some images from our recent Mentawai trip earlier this year. We got H-tees pretty solid/fun. Damn love those islands but they’re so volatile. There always seems to be something going wrong, a mudslide, a volcano eruption, an earthquake or tsunami. The people have nothing and need help with the recent tsunami devastation – so please contribute to the lead agency SURFAID. Read Phil Kiem’s (Owner of Mv Tengirri) account on what happened when the Tsunami hit. He’s been out there for 6 years….knows the islands well.
This weekend expect 2-3 footers around Sydney, mostly east swell but again – strong nuisance winds.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend 10am to 6pm…time to start ordering your Christmas gifts. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW.
Have a great weekend, :: uge
Blimey, summer is sure havin’ a rough start. Rain and wind dominate the landscape this morning. Bumps down at Bondi were breaking 2 foot with some 3 foot junk. It’s onshore galore and not ideal for surfing…pass.
Outlook – yep we’ve got swell, but plenty of wind. What you really want to know is when is this rain gonna stop – I’d say tomorrow or Saturday.
The aussie dollar just passed parity to the green back. Book that holiday to Hawaii kids.
Adios : : ugios
Incredibly sad news this morning…3 time world surfing champion, Andy Irons has reportedly died travelling back from a tour event in Puerto Rico. It’s said he died in a hotel room in Dallas of Dengue fever (unconfirmed)… Condolences to the Irons Family…just devastating news of the Hawaiians sudden death. Live every moment to the full kids…I remember shooting this pic above from the channel in Teahupoo a few years back and he was a standout performer weaving magic through barrel after barrel. Fit as anything…charging…RIP Andy.
On a brighter note, it’s a magical day outside…clean 3 foot waves, sunshine…go, if you can before the SE onshore arrives.
Where is everyone? Are you kidding me? Are you already well lubricated in Melbourne Cup celebrations?
There are plenty of waves around generated by two distinct swells, 1 east, 1 dead south. The winds are SW (mostly offshore), wooo, but I could barely find anyone surfing them…well, a pod of dolphins at Bronte were going off, but that’s about it. Today is the peak of the swell – backs right off throughout this week…
Good luck punting on Melbourne cup…I am gonna bet on Manighar for no reason other than it’s got an exotic name (and favourites never win the cup). So mortgage the house and cut me in 10% if you win the big brass. The Aquabumps Gallery is closing from 1-4pm today for Cup lunch…(rare)
Art Sydney is next week. It’s when 100 galleries roll up under the 1 roof and 20,000 people come to check it all out – it’s a great event. The Aquabumps Gallery is exhibiting for its 3rd year at Art Sydney and we’re offering you a deal on VIP opening night tickets (drinks, entertainment and 1st dibs on the good stuff). BUY BUY BUY! (choose Thursday night 5pm on the drop down on da right)
Goodbye :: uge
Sure. It’s onshore, grey and Monday…all contributing factors that make it hard to get out of the car and go for a wave. But, should you venture out and like surfing on your own, there is a few peaks around. Some onshore mush mixed in with the odd decent 3ft wave. Just look at that left I shot at Bondi – looks orkay right? Bronte had something wobbling out the back with no one around…the only problem is that the wind is going to blow 30 knots from the south later today…I’m sure that’ll impact things (and hopefully bring more swell)
Help out the Mentawais
If you’ve been to the Mentawais, or dreamed of going – or just like photos from there – I think it’s time to help them out after their lethal earthquake/tsunami. The situation in the surf rich islands is so tragic as reports roll in. It’s worse than originally reported. The Greenbush-Maccas areas are devastated – Thunders Islands barely has a tree on it. There is a ton of email going around, people asking to put money directly into bank accounts (very suss – wouldn’t do that)…my suggestion is to donate to the official lead agency in Tsunami Response – S U R F A I D (as appointed by the Indonesian government last Friday). I just donated to SurfAid this morning, and urge you too right now. It’s just not right that we all go over there and surf and enjoy the fruits of the surf-mecca whilst thousands of the locals are now homeless, hundreds dead, loads missing…these people have nothing and live in the middle of nowhere – with very little access to help. So come on fellow surfers – donate. I see 2,000 of you clicked on a surf movie link I put up last week, and only 300 clicked on Surfaid link to donate (big brother’s always watching).
If you want some firsthand reports from the skippers who have been in the islands for years, like Chris scuzz Scurrah or John Mcgroder. Read this…
