tsunami in Samoa

The swell has dropped a gear or so, but surface quality has improved thankfully.
Bondi is breaking around 2-3 foot, and a shallow south end bank was starting to switch on – and so did a powerful rip that sucks you out to New Zealand.
We’re expecting this dead south swell to drop right off after lunchtime today, giving it a rest for a couple of days, before a new swell arrives on Friday.
Nw winds now, NE later today (10 – 15 knots) High tide 5:40am, low tide 11:20am. Water is f-f-f-f-f-f-f-reezing this morning. Got a brain freeze after my first dunk – but hey, I’ve been in the Fiji and might just be a wuss.
Huge earthquake off Samoa this morning which has stirred a deadly tsunami. Worst affected area is Samoa – Salani surf camp (near the famous wave Coconuts) has been destroyed. Namotu (the island I was just on in Fiji) has been evacuated…but no Tsunami has rolled through there – all safe. I bet the boys didn’t leave the bar anyway. Say a pray for the people of Samoa as the death toll rises.
Adios, uge

Hola.
There was a lot of talk about Bronte this morning – not sure why. About 40 guys scrappin’ for the odd fat burger when Bondi was uncrowded and much bigger (4-5ft). Ok, so there is pretty of wobble in this fresh serve of south swell, but at least there is swell. I am hoping it will settle in and begin to line up a bit better mid morning – when I can slip out of gallery and sample a few for myself.
Oh. It the charts were calling it to be much bigger and better. They lie.

Back in the motherland

Hope you enjoyed our little aquatic-excursion to Fiji last week. We’re back in reality now and that’s not such a bad thing as a new south swell hits our shores. Bondi is bankless and 3 feet. Straight hander after straight hander rolling in. I’d expect it to pick up dramatically as the day progresses. An irresponsible worker bee would dart off around about now to some of those south-swell-lovin’ reefs out of town. Especially with these grooming strong westerlie winds.
Deceivingly cold day with all this sunshine. (max 21)
There will be good waves Monday to Wednesday this week.
Over and out. uge

Liquidity

To end our Fijian sojourn we’ve got another brilliant day…the water has been clear, but today was the clearest – immaculate. Underwater you can see everything, everywhere…
We surfed a spot up the reef with no one around and peaky 3 footers (the odd 4 foot set). It was a swell magnet drawing any available energy from the Pacific. Cloud Break probably had a wave as well.
ANYWAY – back to Bondi next week. Hope its been pumping.
Don’t forget, the Aquabumps Gallery is open ALL weekend 10am to 6pm. Laptop screens just don’t do our images justice….come see them printed big. Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis Street BONDI BEACH NSW Telephone 9130 7788 behind the old Bondi Hotel and 2 doors up from Thai Terrific.

Elevation

That’ll be right…I leave town for 1 week and the world’s largest sand storm blows through Sydney. To reiterate, I am in Fiji (not Bondi) at the moment, which means I have no photos of the sand storms (I have 1.2 million emails requesting images). Sorry – can’t be everywhere. From the photos I’ve seen – it looked amazing down at Bondi around 5am.
Not too shabby here in Fiji though… Waves are 3 feet on the incoming tide…clear skies and crystal clear water. Chartered a chopper today to get a fresh perspectives of the aquatic playground surrounding this tiny island…fortunately the winds held off as the 22 island guests were out on their daily activities. Got some insane shots out of the 1,500 taken…soon to be revealed.
Hope the office cubicle is looking like this good. Have a great day:: uge

Bula

Bula. No waves here in Fiji today. Pretty much flat and a bit of wind (should be right for the kites later). To keep everyone away from the bar we’ve distracted them with underwater activities and a few photos sessions.
Waves will be back tomorrow so it’s a good opportunity to let the sunburn settle and do something else. Hope you’re getting waves back in Bondi – heard it’s been hot.
Fri 25th Sept 6pm at Gertrude and Alice on Hall Street Bondi, Jamail Yogis, the author of Saltwater Buddha, A Surfers Quest to find Zen on the Sea, will be talking about his journey – free event – just rock up.

Fijian Blues

Aquabumps is going to be broadcast from the little island of Namotu this week (that’s Fiji). It’s heaven over here.
The colours of this place are insane. Clearest blue water in the world I’d say. Sometimes I’d be shooting something (like the boat shot) and even I can’t believe the fluoro hues that are flash up on my camera back.
Not many surfing shots today – even though it’s been 3 foot for the first couple of days – I’m having a break from chasing board riders and actually gettin’ a few for myself.

Patience

If you had bad timing you could think it was pretty much flat down at Bondi this morning. If you were patient enough to wait 15-20 minutes a wave would appear in the 2 foot range. The swell is still very east, so Bondi won’t be attracting the best of it…go to Maroubra, Whaley, Manly…stuff like that. Forecast is only for 23 degrees today…even though it feels so much hotter already. The southerly winds are starting to blow as I upload this content to the website…18-23 knots later today. So the first half of today is the best time to hit the beach.
Tomorrow a new SSE swell will arrive (2-3 foot) combined with W/SW winds – that should be good. Hit south facing beaches.
Next week Aquabumps is going to be updated from the amazingly blues of Fiji. Yep, we’ve booked an island…even organised a chopper for a few shots…and hopefully we’ll get a couple of swells.
If you own a iphone download the new AQUABUMPS APP from your APP STORE. It’s hot. Well… I think so. Special thanks to the boyz at Conversant Media for creating it. Some of the smartest people I’ve ever worked with.
The Aerial exhibition is still hanging in the Aquabumps Gallery due to popular demand. We’re open all weekend, like every weekend 10am to 6pm both days. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW Telephone 9130 7788. Right behind the Bondi hotel worksite.

32

Wow. What a day. Doesn’t get much better. I know I’ve been saying that a lot lately. Firstly it’s going to hit 32 degrees today. Secondly there are waves from the east around 3 foot. Thirdly its clean due to the NE offshores (at Bondi). Go surf. Is good. Even better the further you get away from the eastern suburbs beaches which just can’t seem to function properly with the current conditions. I’d go northern beaches.
Local Bronte surfer Sam is running his fresh fruit and veg deliveries directly from Flemington markets – get on board – Sam the Fruitman. Start the health kick for summer with fresh produce. Boxes from $44 delivered.
How bad are those new speed bumps in the Bondi Beach car park. If anyone finds my rear axles (with spinning rims) contact the gallery.
Few of the local fellas just got back from the Ments – and they got it on. See video by Russ Brownley. Great insight to what a boat trip is like on the infamous Tengirri.
Enjoy today ::uge

disheveled

Even though the swell has pushed up into the 3 foot range, a wintery onshore breeze was messin’ with it.
Didn’t really see a decent wave roll through the whole time I was down there (approximately 45 minutes).
I guess that sums it up really. The wind should swing NE which will clean things up…but that’s not until right on dark…do work and wait.
High tide 6am, low tide midday. Water temp 17 degrees. Land temp 23 with cloud increasing.
Hava good day. uge

Monochromatic

Not much doing down the beach this morning. No sunrise as clouds dominated the horizon and the weak 1-2 footers weren’t really my cup of tea. The charts are calling a dramatic improvement as the day progresses. East swell, 11 secs later today – that should be good. So by the time you read this and come up with some complicated excuse to leave work, it would have come up. However the flanking NE winds at 15 knots will blow and may disturb surface quality.
Glenn Orgias, the shark Attack victim from Bondi was out there this morning. I have to say…he was surfing amazingly well for only have 1 arm and involved in a attack with a White pointer. Shortboard now too. Good work Glenn.
The Australian Red Cross Blood wagon is currently at Bondi beach. I gave my 500 mls yesterday and encourage you to do the same. If you get the chair at the door you can watch the surf for 10 mins whilst you pump out. Book in first
Indo waves have been pumping this week. Bali has been off the hook. Padang Padang had 40 out yesterday all trying to get that celebrated covershot. Chaos.
Canon have just launch their new pro-sumer camera body. The EOS 7D. This 18 megapixel beast features HiDef video capabilities like its 5d brother, but there’s something new – Hybrid Image Stabilizer technology. So what’s that? I am not 100% sure as I don’t have one yet, but I gather it corrects camera shake in a big way…so you can shoot slow shutters – sharp.

the wund

Mad southerly change ripped along the coast around 7:30am this morning, ruining the still, calm cookin’ morning. Felt like it was going to hit 33 degrees today (again) as you broke into a sweat before 7am – well now you’re probably under-dressed for work as the temps dropped back to winter averages.
It hit 33 degrees yesterday in Sydney and EVERYONE was at the beach. Bondi was jammed packed…gridlock…so busy it was hard to do anything…the simple things like just walking along the promenade was like a rugby match…or finding a patch of sand to throw out the towel – impossible… and you’d be dreamin’ if you thought you’d get a car park – we don’t have those here. See panoramics shot of crowds (don’t get creepy with the zoom kids).
Festival of the winds was on yesterday – some amazing contraptions (kites) hovering above Bondi beach.
Waves – nuttin’ to see here this morning as this ENE swell fails to produce anything rideable. It’s the smallest day of the week so do something else. Tomorrow should get better. ::uge
PS – see what I saw this morning at 7am by looking at this panoramic zoom

Tunnel vision

Busy day in surf land. Incoming tide pushing a few bombs into our beaches. Ideal conditions with light grooming offshores. Most beaches would have something to surf today. Swell origin has gone SE so Bondi was starting to work again. Hope you got a few. Loads of people late for work today.
Jeremy Wilmotte, Maroubra tube pilot documented his morning with a head cam and he probably got the best waves of the session. See what he sees down the line. Watch Video from this morning.
Waves all weekend (SE 3 ft with NW winds). Yep. Immaculate weather too. 27 degrees both days. Amazing. Go for a drive, you’ll find something.
If you’re in Bondi over the weekend, come see the Aquabumps gallery’s Aerial photography show “Airborne“…big crowds of last summer shot from a new angle rarely seen. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (behind the work site of the Bondi Hotel, next door to Civic Video).
Ok ok, its true…we’re beta testing our new Aquabumps Iphone app (I wasn’t meant to discuss it so early – I’m frothin’ a bit). It’s hot, and its free. Dig in. If something goes wrong, be nice, we’re still testing. Click here see app in Itunes store, or if you’re on your iphone go to the App store and download AQUABUMPS app. The fresh pics are in category “Daily Photos” – so click on that puppy when you’re up and running.

Spike

A lil’ spike in swell is providing plenty of waves for all this morning. Tad more south in it, SSE at 9.6 secs.
Quite a few breaks working around the 3-4 foot mark and this morning’s low tide (5.11am at 0.44m) is puttin’ some hollow in them walls. Board snappin’ material. The weather man is calling onshore SE winds later today (offshore right now). So now is best…I’d go north side…
Check the weather forecast for the next 3 days. Friday, sunny 27. Saturday, sunny 27, Monday sunny 27. WOW. Summer has arrived early. Enjoy.

Low tide shanks

If you get in your car and head north or south you’re bound to score something worth braggin’ to the fellas ‘bout. Why? Well we have a small east swell running, and its getting’ bigger as the day plays out. What else huh? Westerly winds all day long – perfect offshores making those low tide banks throw a hollow lip. That it? Na, sunshine. Loads of it. Just like the past 6 weeks of amazing Sydney weather – it’s a glorious day made for outdoor activities.
Enough talking to myself. Go outside. Good waves over the next 3-4 days – so you won’t miss out.
Art Sydney is on again this year, 22-25 October, and yep Aquabumps Gallery will be exhibiting again along with another 80 galleries. Special ticket off for Aquabumps readers to the opening night. tidy

There’s waves today, but only at selected breaks. Swell origin is dead east, so a beach facing that direction will be making the most of it. Bondi was neglecting the swell source and 1 foot. Tama and Bronte didn’t have anyone out. Bra had a decent wave. Manly would have one also. So it’s a day to go for a spin in the wagon. A few little nooks and crannies down south and north would have uncrowded fun ones.
Westerly winds forecasted all day. Chance of a shower later tonight – but perfectly fine up until then. (21)
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday ALL look like they’re going to be good surfing days. Initially a new ESE swell will provide 10 sec, 3-4 footers (and offshores W winds) THEN the swell will go most east into the weekend. So no rush, you will get your wave quota later this week.
Yesterdays sunrise stirred many comments on Aquabumps.com and around the traps. Amazing morning. I shot this large panoramic image so you can get a full wide angle on the morning (kinda what you’d see if you’d walking yesterday at 5:30am – closest thing to human vision). CLICK HERE to view and zoom right in. This “Technicolour” panoramic shot will be in the gallery for sale (surprise surprise). Hope you’ve been in to see our Aerial exhibition which is hanging in the Aquabumps gallery at the moment 10am to 6pm daily (closed Mondays) 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach (right behind Bondi hotel, next door to Thai terrific)

Technicolour

Mornin’ chinas. At 5:30am I got a wiff of pink starting to light up above Ben Buckler so I rolled down the hill, tripods and multiple cameras in tow.
By about 5:40am the skies lit up into full blown technicolour. Quite spectacular. Amazing start to the day.
Now before you send me an email saying, “was it really like that and what special filters do you use”…just ask Joel the personal trainer down at Bondi…he was standing next to me as the skies blew up into strong hues of pinks and oranges (and I don’t own any coloured lens filters – for real).
Another common question is what secret camera settings are used in these shots. I’d love to come up with something complex, but really the best settings are those on your alarm clock – just wake up at 5:30am every day (or get home before then) and you’ll score a morning like this about every 3-4 weeks. Sometimes longer…(I remember once we had a 3 month stint of fizzers). I shot panoramic film today so have more goods to show soon when they’re processed. Also its incredible how fast the colours turn to grey. (approx 4-5 min)
Enough sunrise ramble. There are waves too. 2 foot. Swell is from East so Bondi is not the go. Bronte looked good around 9am but I didn’t have time to shop around. Suspect Bra would have something. NW winds and a westerly change will arrive later bringing rain and thunderstorms – so I guess the good weather marathon is over folks.
Have a great working week. No major swells on the radar yet. Uge

La Femme

Today we have some special guests down at Bondi – the future of women’s surfing – the stars of the ROXY surf team, Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa) and Laura Enever (Narrabeen). Between these two young girls they’re cleaning up the female competitive surfing arena. 18 year old Sally, ranked 6 in the world, is lighting fast – even in the micro Bondi conditions this morning (saw her do 4 reos on a 1 foot wave). 17 year old, Laura, from the famous training grounds of Narrabeen has taken out the ISA Junior World Championships and the 2008 Triple Crown Rookie of the Year.
Surf conditions – well, its dropped off and a weak mini NE swell has arrived. Bondi was 1-2 foot, surfable but only if you’re the weight of these girls (sub 50 kaygees). I’d expect the surf to improve over the weekend as the swell period increases from 6 – 8.7. Have fun.
The Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi will be open all weekend, as it always is, 10am to 6pm (151 Curlewis Street Bondi). The Airborne exhibition is still up, a series of images shots from helicopters last summer.
Seeya, uge
PS – it wasn’t Taj down at Bondi yesterday. One of my informants had his wires crossed.

low-down

This surprise south swell is still alive and kicking. Must be pushing up from Victoria as its been pumping down there and coming in from the dead south.
Bondi was 3 foot and mostly closing out. These banks just can’t handle it. A 7:30am high tide (when I shot) wasn’t doing it any favours. The dropping tide saw conditions improve.
I forgot my tripod today so shots are mostly taken from lying on the sand and low.
Tomorrow will definitely be smaller and a switchin’ to a NE swell. (not idea for Bondage)
Mentawai Charter boat, Tengirri, still has the odd spot available for 2010 (Email). They’ve had a mental season. Watch this vid of Rifles the other day to get your motivated. One of the best waves in the world but VERY RARELY works. (only my opinion)

Phantom Caves

Last night before bed I checked the swell charts. I saw a 15 second period forecasted overnight that reverts to 10 seconds in the morning. To be honest, I thought it was a typo or the work experience kids had been let loose in the Buoy weather office yesterday – so I ignored it. If you don’t know what all this seconds and period jargon is ( I don’t really ) – basically forecast was for a short spike in swell overnight.
Anyway, the work experience kids hacked it right. As I pulled up into the car park at sunrise I saw a surfer pull into a (no exaggeration) decent tube all the way across the shallow bank. Wow. It was around 3 foot with 4 foot mackin’ sets, clean and crowded early. Swimming out there was a little more complicated due to a massive rip which kept me busy for hours. Even though there were plenty of surfers out there, and some decent rides amongst close outs, I just couldn’t stay in position. Instead here is a fresh serve of some lip throwin’ dumpers to keep you aquatically inspired.
Zee Quiksilver shop is now open at 383 George Street Sydney for all those trapped in the cubicles. Drop in at lunch time, might be time to grab some new boardies seeing we’ve got beach weather.

Yet another sensational sunny, warm morning welcoming the new season. The dead south swell has hung in there and Bondi is flaunting fun little peaks (2 footers). Most other beaches wouldn’t be showing much, maybe Curly would be the best bet over the Northern Biatches.
I suspect these conditions will maintain for another 24hrs before backing off – giving way to a new ENE swell arriving tomorrow afternoon and bringing waves for the weekend.
Enjoy this good weather today and tomorrow, rain due on Thursday (to fill up those dry tanks) and then back to sunshine.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm every day (including weekends) except Mondays. The new Aerial exhibition “Airborne”  has been well received and we’ve had record numbers through the doors over the weekend. Come see. Oh, and thanks to our gallery beer sponsor, the good folk at PERONI.
