Full as a boot out there today. 1.8 metres of fat at 7am high tide. Swell has hung in there with waves breaking 3-4 foot, but they’re all porked up. I would wait for the low tide.
Slight onshore winds now, currently Easterly, but later 5-10 knots of North Easterly forecasted. Don’t expect much on the weekend – she’s droppin’ fast.
Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D
I’ve never seen a 3d IMAX movie before last week, let alone a 3d surf movie. I loved it. Incredible experience – took a bit of adjustment at first. Ultimate Wave Tahiti is a film by Stephen Low shot at the most picturesque break in the world, Teahupoo, Tahiti. The main stars are Kelly Slater and local tank Raimana but the ocean shots are what drew me in. I recommend seeing it for sure. Launches today at IMAX. More Info
Don’t forget Redbull Helisurf is on tomorrow at Curl Curl and Cronulla – read.
Zee long and thin Aquabumps gallery is open all weekend as normal. 10am to 6pm 151 Curlewis Street Bondi T:9130 7788. Come seem ’em big.
I had high hopes for this morning after surfing big Bondi last night. It actually was quite solid on dark, and not 100% closeouts if you can believe it.
The swell has dropped back a gear within the 3-5 foot range, but the nemesis east wind was in early, ruffling any decent bumps out there. Needless to say it was quite junkie, funkie and fattie (6am was a high tide of 1.7m – that sure porked it up).
I am sure if you had a decent look around you’d find something fun to slide on. Swell is hanging around for a couple of days, and the winds are going north tomorrow – now that is good news peeps.
This Saturday Redbull are running their Helisurf event at Curl Curl (9am) then Cronulla (10am). What’s it all about? Well basically you have to register here, then paddle like buggery to a buoy out to sea. First one to touch the buoy (paddling a max 6’6 and without physical contact with the other punters) gets winched up into the bird and taken to a mystery surf beach with a Red Bull athlete. Sounds like a perfect day? Do it, I will be in another chopper shooting your perfect mornin’. MORE INFO
:::uge (ps, we’re looking for a Aquabumps gallery assistant – full timer click here)
Swell has come up alright, but the onshore winds are still blowing. What a difference 24 hours makes…yesterday you’d struggle to surf a wave above your knee caps, and today you’ll score a chunky 4 footer out at South Bondi. The quality isn’t there though – lumpy, bumpy and sectiony…nonetheless – there are waves and seeing it’s not a sunny beach day you’ll find plenty without the crowds.
3 bunks short
A mate of mine booked a charter on Tengirri to Mentawais and has 3 spare spots. He’s a top bloke from the states….so if you want to surf the wave mecca April 24th to May 6 just email John John. He’ll hook you up.
Noosa Festival of Surfing
The Noosa Festival of Surfing is on again this year and it just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. Dates: 14-21 March 2010 @ Noosa. 600 competitors and thousands of spectators make the pilgrimage up to points for the largest surf in oz. Legends walking around everywhere…had a beer with Terry Fitz last time I was up there. For more information, log onto www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com
Hope you got up early this morning…as of 8:40am a violet south change hit with a BANG.
What this means is:
The change brings cooler temperatures for Sydney after a sweltering hot night – did anyone sleep last night?
The early 1-1.5 footers of the early have been butchered into 30cm wind chop
All this wind will generate a new south swell that follows tomorrow afternoon (it’s going to blow 30 knots!)
Clouds have now smothered Sydney
My lunchtime surf/dip has been canned
Gallery Sales/Production Assistant required
The Aquabumps empire is searching for a FULL TIME Gallery Sales/Production assistant. Before you all write in thinking you’re applying for a job which involves lying on the beach, travelling to the Maldives, surfing Mentawais on the weekend – IT’S NOT – that job has already gone. I repeat this is not a photography/travel job. We’re looking for a bright spark who wants a future in running/managing our flagship gallery in Bondi. Enough ramble, read this spiel, if you think you tick the boxes then send your resumes into [email protected].
Later honks :: uge
PS – Ok, Ok, I’ll ‘fess up, that wasn’t me in this shot from yesterday. Nice jacket though. These days the beach is full of lens men running around getting their morning angles.
I prefer good waves mid week than on the weekend. The fruits of working across the road from Bondi and surfing when you’re all at work. Well, you all know Saturday was pumping (everywhere) and Sunday had decent waves at North East exposed beaches, well today is dropped right back and Bondi was a semi-surfable waist high – boo. Maroubra would have had a chest high set, but nothing special. Fortunately there is a swell hitting mid week, and from the south which favours Bondi. It will be flanked with onshore winds, but I think it will be ok.
HOT day. 34 big ones. A swim/mal-surf is essential for your well being.
Also, I stuck a picture of myself in today’s report, so you all know what I look like. Check out my new shooters jacket – cool eh?
Join our facebook fan page. Just ‘cause.
PS – happy birthday mum.
So we’re back in Bondi and the waves are far from impressive. Onshore 3 foot mush. Not a bad sunrise to make up for it…
Hard to concentrate on work knowing that the waves up at Gold Coast are pumpin’, yep, just as I left the land of the high rise. Can’t get it on all the time.
Here are the facts of today. High tide, 12:13pm, low tide 6:12am, water temp 23 degrees, max 25 on the land, SE onshore winds 15 knots easing, and the preferable NE winds will prevail later tonight…hopefully cleaning up the surf for you tomorrow. Should be 3-4 foot tomorrow with NW winds – good combo.
The Aquabumps gallery is open all weekend 10am to 6pm. You’ll find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach, just up from the waxing joint and near the Vodafone shop…all your needs taken care of in one stretch.
The waves are so much better up here. It’s no wonder it’s a world champion breeding grounds.
Finally the swell kicked up and most places had waves. Burleigh had some great 3 footers, barrels, speedy sections….super long rides…if there wasn’t 50 pros warming up for the 4 star WQS Breaka Pro I’d be out there for sure (oh, and I have to catch a flight)!
Hope you’re getting waves back in Bondi.
PS – watch the Burleigh Breaka Pro live. (it’s on right now)
Some neat little waves on offer this morning up here at the Goldie. Exposed beaches like D’Bah had the odd 3 footer…but wow…thick crowds just like Bondi, just not so many L-Platers. Looks like everyone is limbering up for World tour stop No.1 – the Quiky Pro. Swell comes up today in QLD, and tomorrow should be decent…pray the winds don’t get all funky.
Back in Bondi it looks like 4 foot and on’snore. My spies say there is very little wave quality…and you are better off spending your time doing something more productive. Looks onshore for the next few days…protected southerly corners the go. Still raining?
I am a big fan of helicopters. Ever since my first shoot in one I’ve been hooked. The nuts at Redbull have come up with the hot idea of giving you all a dream ride in a heli – called HELISURF. What is it? Red Bull Heli Surf is a paddle race from the beach to a buoy through the surf out to sea. The first person to reach the buoy is winched into a helicopter and whisked away for their prize. Someone say prize? Well you’ll be flown away to a mystery beach where the surf is pumpin’ on that day. Sounds too good to be true? Register here and be at Cronulla on 27th Feb 10am or Curl Curl 27th Feb 9am or Newcastle 27th Feb 8am. Do it.
Finally some waves up here on the Gold Coast…ripper. The constant onshores subsided and some nice clean 2-3 footers at a small beach near Tweed. The place is overrun with pros in anticipation for the Roxy Pro/Quiky Pro that starts on the 27th Feb. (World tour stop No.1)
From all reports Sydney was smoking yesterday, which caught everyone off guard. The charts are showing a lot of wind and rain today in Sydney. Tomorrow is 6ft solid at Bondi, with SW winds…could be ok if the banks can handle it.
Up here in Queensland the waves will get bigger tomorrow, hopefully the flanking winds won’t junk it up.
PS – Please join our Facebook page, you can post up your own shots, talk amoungst yourselves…you know, stuff to distract you from actually doing any work.
Sorry about the late update today…I’m up at Surfer’s Paradise (QLD) without any surf driving around in circles (driving myself mad), especially when I’ve been getting sms’s from crew in Sydney telling me it’s smokin’! That’ll be right…
Bondi would be around 4 foot today and bigger tomorrow…oh, and it looks wet down there….not up here! Haven’t seen a cloud in days.
Hopefully that swell you’ve got in Bondi will hit here mid this week in Gold Coast.
Adios, Ugios (north of the border – I do live in Sydney normally, promise, just been moving around)
No waves but plenty of colour. That’s 2 decent sunrises in 1 week…some one is being good to us.
NE micro swell running, totally slipping past Bondi (0.5ft) and maybe dribbling into exposed beaches. I’d be surprised if you could find something above your knee/waistline today. High tide is killing it. Nonetheless, hit the beach, as it’s going to be a smokin’ 33 degrees today..enjoy it before the rain and clouds hit later today.
Water is crystal clear at the moment…I went for a dip at lunchtime yesterday and was blown away with the vis.
Don’t forget Valentine’s day on Sunday kids. A six pack and 70’s surf movies ain’t going to cut it with the ladies anymore fellas. Hang on, why not stop by the Aquabumps Gallery on the weekend to grab a little framed artwork. Nice. Sorted. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW (just up from Thai Terrific, Roys, Civic Vids – you know). Telephone 9130 7788 open all weekend 10am to 6pm (including today).
I am not a morning person. Swear. Even after 11 years of waking up at sunrise it’s a major effort to roll out of bed in the wee hours (especially on these sleepless humid nights). But I have to say, mornings like these make it all worthwhile. Salubrious 23-24 degree water (that’s as warm as it gets), no wind and bakin’ sunshine – doesn’t get any better. Well, I guess a 3-4 peak in the south corner wouldn’t hurt. Forget surfing – it’s a lake. The bra may have water moving – but I don’t think it will be substantial.
In stark contrast to our flat spell, I just check the Hawaiian surf report for today/yesterday. It went a little something like this:
“15-18ft west swell, occasionally 20 foot, light winds NE, air temp: 25 degrees, water: 27 degree” Is that some sort of sick joke? Let’s go!
Later, :: uge
Ahh what a day. Nice, hot ‘n’ muggy. Max 28 degrees with light winds tending nor-easterly later. We still have a small east swell in town, it’s only 1 foot at Bondi and barely surfable, 2-3 foot at Maroubra. Not a lot of quality on offer – the 6:50am full high tide is concealing anything resembling a decent wave. Looked really bumpy.
Yesterday’s sunrise image ‘Vivid’ stirred up quite a bit of interest. Emails from all over the world.
If you can’t wait until 11am (when the Aquabumps daily arrives), try our Facebook page for the latest and greatest (and you can play amoungst yourselves)
Go for a swim if you have time today…
The swell is dissipating – and so is the rain – alleluia. Bondi had a weak, floppy 1-2 foot wave this morning – with a large number of people out. It’s not going to get any better for a while so best utilize what’s on offer with a large chunk of fibreglass e.g. Mal, Fish.
Half asleep, in the dark I rolled down the hill around 6am, it was raining and cloudy – didn’t think the sunrise was going to pull through when boom, shards of colour erupted on the horizon. Good lens fodder, hope you saw the sunrise this morning.
Winds are NE at the moment and the sunshine is out – great beach day down at Bondi with a top of 27 degrees.
In our recent survey, it seems most of you are using iphones. I hope you’ve all gone to your AppStore and downloaded the AQUABUMPS app. It’s free! Oh, and our facebook page has nearly 4,000 of you interacting with it. Join
The Aquabumps Gallery is open 10am to 6pm every day except Mondays. Come on in…151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach (near TAB and Civic Video) t: 9130 7788
Sydney needed a good hosing down…and 4 days straight of pouring rain should do it… enough already! Trying to shoot out of the ‘abduction van’ side door ain’t easy in the rain. Only got a couple of shots of a decent left at Bondi that seems to be a rideable 2 ft with 3 ft infrequent sets. We still have east swell hittin’, so Maroubra should be bigger – but still junkie. It’s dropping off further tomorrow and there won’t be much to surf all week. It’s going to continue to rain though.
Yesterday I was in Adelaide, where it’s clear skies and 35 bakin’ degrees. No surf though. Nice to get out the rain!
Thank you to the thousands of crew who have completed our Aquabumps survey last Friday. Really appreciate it. It’s great to learn more about you. Some interesting results like 67% of the readers are male (it used to be around 85% male last time we surveyed), most of you read my ramble and not just look at the pretty pictures (weird), and there is a lot more of you on the northern beaches than I thought…oh, and you want to see more pictures of [email protected]# (that’s not going to happen, not unless I crack my head open again). If you haven’t completed the survey, please do so and you could win a $1050 acrylic artwork from our gallery to hang above your sofa.
Have a good week :: uge
Decent sized swell is wasted in the Eastern Suburbs. We just don’t have the infrastructure to hold it. A.k.a reefs, a river mouth, or a decent chunk of sand or artificial reef.
Bondi was a wobbly, wonky, manky 4-5 foot. I sat there for 1.5 hrs looking for a single decent one – and na, nuttin’. Most of the other beaches just looked big (6 ft), fat and random…so be prepared to paddle around in circles. I’d drive far away, in search of a protected reef.
Wind is going more north as you read this. That’s a good thing, let’s hope it lines up a little better. High tide 2pm, low tide 8am.
Fortunately there is a dead east swell all weekend with favourable winds. Get out there, with the Inter Club challenge on this weekend up at Gold Coast, all good surfers will be leaving their local post clearing the peak.
Aquabumps is open all weekend 10am to 6pm and you’ll find our long gallery at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach – still lost?
Let’s get to know each other
For years now I’ve been pumping out this daily email to thousands of people and you know a lot more about me than I know about you. I’d like to improve the Aquabumps experience and hear your feedback – what you like, dislike…please complete the Official Aquabumps Survey and you could win one of my $1050 acrylic artworks from the gallery. Don’t worry, the info gathered will between you and I, and I’m not selling it on the black market…so…can I have 5 mins of your time seeing it’s Friday and fill out this survey. Thanks heaps.
Hard to pick the surf conditions at the moment. Last night was hot fun down at Bondi, some 6 foot bombs out the back…and most of the crowds were put off by the bad weather.
Today I rolled down the hill full of hope – but it wasn’t really doing it. Junkie 3-4 footers breaking randomly along the whole beach. Hmn.
The BOM are calling heavy rain and NE winds, which is good news. Let’s hope it cleans the surf right up – but who knows. Today is the peak of the swell for the week – should hit 5-6 foot later today especially at East exposed beaches (that’s not Bondi). Watch out for blueys – they’re back and sending people to hospital.
Totally random bits to distract you from work:
If I lived in the states I would go here – the Surf Lodge NY, looks hot.
Looking forward to seeing “The Ultimate Wave Tahiti” – a 3d Movie featuring Kelly Slater at imax
I still can’t believe Kelly Slater, Taj, Mick and plenty others are coming to Bondi for the Boost Mobile Surf Sho – March 12-14th.
Join our facebook fan page. www.facebook/aquabumps why? Cause we’re getting updates out faster on it, and different content, and you we’ll make it good.
I’ve never been to Tassie, but hear the waves pump. Here is a little beachside joint to stay at – Bicheno
Local residents win against the council’s plans to develop Hugh Bamford reserve into a truck depot – more
Enough ramble. uge
I know that I am meant to be excited at the prospect of surfing a wave today that might break above my head – but I am not.
The predicted east swell has hit and waves are now 3-4 foot, but a flanking nemesis easterly wind has followed – making onshore slop. Further up the beach of Bondi to the North you’ll find protected waves, but they’re still wonky. Sit tight and wait for the winds to swing offshore – estimated Thursday night or Friday.
I swear every time I pulled out a lens today a rain cloud appeared and poured on me. Struggled to shoot anything decent today…oh that 1st shot is from Ht’s, Indonesia…just had to look at something decent. Been a while between good waves…
Take me up to goldie right now – where it’s firing. ::uge
Easterlies are the devil wind for us….basically messes up most locations. Disappointing morning down at Bondi, a small crew grovelling over 1-2 foot slop. The rest of the week looks like there is a strong easterly swell, but it’s going to also be onshore until Friday…so the options are narrow. I like Thursday at dusk and Friday for the best surf days of this week. It’s good to see some decent digits on the swell charts for a change.
1,864 people have joined our Facebook fan page in 6 weeks or so. Nice. It’s where we stick up little travel hints and bits and pieces that maybe aren’t appropriate for the blast out to 30,000. www.facebook.com/aquabumps go here to join up. I promise the content will be different to the site and interesting.
In my former life I worked with a lot of smart people. Some of them were undiscovered geniuses and have created the Aquabumps site and iphone app. Well, one of them split off and started an interesting site called URworld. It’s like an online Luxe guide using google maps showing you the cool stuff (not the mainstream stuff). Here is Bondi…if you’re not from around here you can find a decent place to eat, drink and shop. But you can also check out other locations like NYC . Ok, enough torkin’ it up.
These big early morning high tides are porkin’ up anything moving out there. South facing Bondi was a dribbly 1-2 foot, still struck by the weed monster. Maroubra was a better option with a junkie 2-3ft, but super fat, onshore and random. I think if you drove around town you’d find something, especially northern beaches, but with a good swell all week I’d wait for a better day to do that.
Think I missed a good sunrise this morning. I saw the remnants of a subtle cloud thru the blinds and knew I’d slept way too long. By the time I got down there it was hues of greydom.
The Indo Odyssey
Jim Banks, the veteran indo explorer, is taking guests thru the surf infested archipelago. If you want to join his expeditions, and tired of surfing with 2000 people at Bondi, book yourself into therapy and a Indo trip. His intention is to hunt down surf breaks that are relatively unknown. More Info
