Wave Veins, Maroubra 7am

Groundswell

Well well well…the swell really kicked, didn’t it?

Right now there are some bomb sets…like the 6-8 foot variety. It’ solid and long interval. When they arrive at Bondi they are closing out straight…and that’ll get worse on a lower tide. Drive baby, drive! You need a reef that can hold size. What a day, immaculate with clear skies and offshore winds.

My next trip is going to be the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Anyone know a good helicopter pilot that works that region for doors off shooting? Post your Italy tips here.

  1. Just spent a week in positano. It’s beautiful and the only place to stay – in my opinion. A friend owns casa de Pepe a villa in positano. You wake up and wat breakfast over looking the amalfi. And pepe he’s a real character too. Grew up in the area, my gf met him over in Nicaragua where they both owned hotels. Loves a surf and knows bondi. He’ll show you around don’t you worry.

  2. One place you have to stop in on

Casa Angelina in Praiano http://www.casangelina.com/ …..stay there if you can. if you can’t, just go wander round for a while. It’s stunning and has some great art set in the place too.

If you go to Capri…which you probably should just for the boats….you can jog the top of the island (from the lighthouse to the blue grotto) then go for a swim in the blue grotto before it opens at 8:00 on your own. Highly recommended too.

  3. Enjoy Almafi, è spettacolare!

We visited back in 2013 and stayed in Montepertuso, which is located high above Positano. In my opinion, Positano is a bit over touristy. It’s lovely, filled with shops and eateries, and happening and all…, but is priced to match its popularity. Just depends what you’re aiming for.

Montepertuso is a small village with giant views, some great restaurants (punters taxi it up every night to dine at several), and you can easily bus it down to Positano, or burn-out the legs on the humongous staircase.

MP is close to the Sentiero Degli Dei as well, or “Path of the Gods”, which is most certainly one of the most jaw-dropping hikes on earth. Very much recommended, if you’re into that sorta thing.

And rent a car. Everyone tells you driving there is crazy and should be avoided. It’s definitely crazy, but it’s heaps fun as well. We had an Audi Q5 and made it out without a scratch. Just get the insurance and enjoy.

  4. If you want to experience something unique fly to Sicily trust me is the real south of Italy less tourists and tonnes more to offer in terms of historical sites food etc. and yes they also have waves (occasionally) I stayed in siracusa till last week i travelled around with a great local Sicilian surfer and managed to catch some little fun waves! If you want details pm and I will send you more details. Cheers

  5. You must stay in Ravello- high up on the hill overlooking the sea. Just far enough from the mania & crowds of the coast, yet a short bus trip down. Cute little village with some good food & local hotels. No cars. They are parked for you by the hotel or left outside the town wall. Have a sunset drink on the terrace of Hotel Carusso and check out their infinity pool. When you have made your second million, go back and stay there! Enjoy…

  6. We have visited the area 4-5 times and have just got back from a week there in June 2015.

Tips for the Amalfi coast – almost too many to list …

    • Stay in Positano – touristy but beautiful – great fun – best time is early evening – most of the day trippers have left and the evening light is stunning – stay at Hotel Covo dei Saraceni or Hotel Bucca de Bacco – both next to the beach. Aat at La Cambusa by the beach – great seafood
    • Walk along the coastal pathway from Positano to the beach at Fornillo – about 15 mins – eat at the hotel Pupette restaurant on the terrace or at Lo Guarracino before you get to Fornillo.
    • Take a free boat from Positano to the restaurants on the adjoining beaches Da Alolfo or Bagni d’Arienzo.
    • Watch the rich and famous coming ashore from their super yachts moored off Positano – count how many of the yachts have a helicopter on the deck !
    • Go up to Montepertuso – small village up in mountain looking over Positano. Montepertuso means “hole in the mountain”, or as one local told me “Holy Mountain”. You choose which one you prefer. Views are stunning – just make sure you don’t suffer from vertigo. Eat at “La Tagliata” – family run restaurant – no menu – you eat what Mama has cooked that day – most of the veg are grown in garden clinging to the mountainside.
    • Take the ferry from Positano to Amalfi – get a seat on top deck – see the Amalfi coast from the sea.
    • Take a bus or taxi from Amalfi up to Ravello – walk to the Villa Cimbrone terrace (called Belvedere, the famed Terrazzo dell’lnfinito). Gore Vidal described it as “… the most beautiful place that I had ever seen in all my travels …” . Avoid the tourist trap cafes in the square. Eat at Hotel Villa Maria on the terrace. Good food and great views over the Valle del Dragone to Scala.
    • Drink Limoncello

  7. Staying anywhere on the beaches will be busy busy busy, book early and check that they have parking if you’re driving. Otherwise staying up in the hills gives you incredible views for breakfast and you’re never really more thatn a short bus ride from the ocean. If you’re driving a rental car get fully comp insurance! The roads are a different kind of crazy. The whole place is breathtakingly beautiful though.

For possibly the best Italian meal of your life, Don Alfonso 1890 will blow your mind. Most of their food comes from the farm on the coast near Capri (run by the Don himself) and his son is head chef in the kitchen. They have accommodation so if you fancy a tasting menu with the matched wines then you can indulge. Its not cheap but was a highlight of my honeymoon recently. If you fly into Naples and spend the night, the best pizza in town is at a place called 50 Kalo, you have to que out the door with the locals but its well worth it.

Shooting at sunrise will give you some stunning images as the sun will come up in line with the coast.

Looking forward to seeing your shots!
    Cheers
    Phil

  8. You won’t find many waves in Positano or Amalfi!! but knowing how much you love sunrise you will definitely get some fab photos then. Also the sunsets are magical too.A great hotel in Amalfi is Luna Convento with spectacular views and great food.
    Buon viaggio.

  9. Hey Bro,

If you’re going to the Amalfi Coast, go have lunch/dinner at the 17th century Norman Tower (converted into a restaurant) in Maori. 270degree views of the sea, my wife and I had our wedding reception there, one of the most epic spots on earth, yyyeeewwww!!!!

    Enjoy

    Tim

  10. Ciao!
I am Italian, living in OZ and every year I go back to that side of Italy for summer. The best experience we had after seeing the Amalfi coast so many times was to actually jump on board of a Catamaran Lagoon 450 with a few friends for a few days and enjoying a unique side of that holiday and those destinations. The Captain is a girl- Norma Nardeschi normanardeschi@gmail.com her nmbr is +39 347 22 65 070 . She knows the area so well. The boat has 4 cabins and bathrooms and if you go in oct prices will be lower than jury-aug. My recommendation is to structure your trip this way: stay a few days in a B&B between Positano/ Praiano/Amalfi so you can visit the area “from the land” rent a Vespa and enjoy the ride… walk or scoot around those lil streets on the edge of the mediterranean sea, stop for best spaghetti alle vongole literally on the beach (with your toes in the sand! overlooking sunsets) and enjoy the bella vita during the Aperitivo time with Negroni and Spritz! BUT after that jump on board of that boat and let Norma guide you through some unexplored spots.. u can stay a few days or a week, explore the beauty of the less beaten tracks of islands such as PROCIDA, VENTOTENE, PALMAROLA, PONZA. She will find the right bays for u to go swimming in the morning, the right spots for your dinners and will have an authentic Italian experiences. Amazing. I will send you a private msg with a few notes…I’ve got a huge list! I went w a few friends this year and as Italian I was hugely impressed!

  11. You must go to Capri. It’s heaven after serving time on the Amalfi Coast.

Make sure you meet Lorenzo, the driver of the red 1960 Fiat convertible stretch taxi. Knows all the good spots on the island and has the best car in town.

    Enjoy!
