After yesterday’s leap in swell size from 1 foot to 3 foot I’d thought there would be some decent waves this morning. Unfortunately its disappeared as fast as it appeared. The swell origin is dead south, so Bronte, The Bra etc would be watching it march on by to south facing beaches. Bondi was 2 foot, maybe 3 foot on a larger set…but mostly closing out. Decent crowd out there for a Monday morning when everyone should be back at work.
Today is probably the biggest it’s going to be all week at Bondi. A new NE swell will arrive Thursday, bringing good waves for next weekend.
Freezing in the water this morning. Call me a wuss, but I’ve only just started to thaw out from my swim. Horrible rip in the sth of Bondi. Ferocious. Trying to swim with a camera (and a 200mm lens) with only was flipper was difficult.
Little bit more bump in the swell today. Say a small man’s foot up on yesterday. The swell charts are calling it a 13 second swell period – wow – it’s probably from all that thumpin’ swell down in Victoria. That all translates to 2 footers, long waits, lacking push and big early morning crowds enjoying the incredible weather – again. Seeing it’s been flat it is actually looking quite inviting. Top of 23 today and clouds will rock in later. 27 tomorrow with possible showers. Small swell all weekend, sub 2 footers. Boo
The aerial shots taken last summer are hanging in the Aquabumps gallery. A unique angle of Bondi which most haven’t seen before. Come see 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW 2026 t:91307788 More info | See Aerial Shots Online

If a one liner was needed to sum up today it will be ‘bakin’ pancakes’. Oh my, it’s such a nice day outside (23), if only there were waves.
Bondi had a wave-starved pack in the corner scrappin’ over sub-1-footers (clean). Meanwhile back on the beach hundreds broke out into their morning rituals…bit of Tai chi, skipping, soft sandin’ or just rolling around in the sand. Some new faces came out of winter hibernation in attempt to lose the excess baggage for the inbound summer season.
Have a good day. 1 foot bigger tomorrow. Maybe 3 ft Monday. Nothing major to report.
Join us on twitter.
It’s been pretty flat for some time now… sigh…Can’t even remember the last decent wave. Next south swell is Monday. This huge mutha high pressure system sure ain’t going anywhere fast. ‘least the good weather marathon continues and we’re looking at a nice 21 degrees today.
Instead of showing you 5 images of Lake Bondi, I’d thought I’d revive some snaps from the archives…firstly, a decent barrel shot of Any Irons at Teahuppo a couple years back when I was drifting in the channel during the Billabong Pro, and secondly some images shot in a stealth, black Sydney pool. This shoot took 9 hours in a heavily chlorinated pool. Bad move. Even though I had a suit on, the chlorine makes you sick after so long. Got some interesting images though…shot 30 people underwater in 1 day for a product launch.
So, have a great day, if you’re work in the shitty, go check out the new look Quiksilver store on George Street Sydney (383 George) a lunchtime.
Otherwise if you’re around Bondi today, come see the new AIRBORNE exhibition on at the AQUABUMPS GALLERY 151 Curlewis Street Bondi beach NSW T:9130 7788 – have a sneak preview here
Gale force WNW winds are ripping through Sydney decimating the micro swell. Bondi was 1 foot, and as always, 3 guys out. Nothing happening over the next few days, not unless you’re a windsurfer….howling for dayz. Best go do some work.

I get a lot of email probably like you do. This email from a reader made me laugh when I logged on this morning:
I am currently in the throes of labour as I write this email. Hopefully bub will arrive today (the 25th). Realise it is windy but we would love for you to capture images of Bondi in the early morning or during the day (if the weather gets more dramatic!). I will certainly check out the aqua bumps website for today when we have a chance. We would then be keen to purchase from shots from your store to keep for our bub into the future as a permanent record of the sunrise on the day he or she arrives! “
Luckily I am down there every morning! ::uge
A bit like Britney Spears, I’m confused when getting dressed in the morning. Dress warm for winter? Shorts? It was filthy warm this morning – 21 degrees at 7am in fact – incredible for winter. Out west they’re going to hit 27 degrees today.
There is no confusion about the surf. Half a foot to a shorties knee cap. Great day for beginners or long boarders and sup contraptions. The wind is going to rip through this town today. 33 knots of NW will blow the tumbleweed down George street. Hope you brought in the washing.
Have a good week. Fine weather (again) all week and no surf until Friday::uge
PS – all images today shot with the new Canon 5D MKII which I have been neglecting in the camera bag. Will shoot daily with it now.
Tough day to do the schlep into town and then sit in that cubicle… no waves but a mighty fine day out there. Magical 25 degrees, and the wind is going to blow 20 knots of NW. Will be still cold in the shade. Be sure to get some outdoor time at some stage.
I saw a few waves miraculously break on the bank in the south. Stand up paddlers have taken over the joint and about the only craft that can get on them. (wave size: between ankle and a short man’s knee high). No surf this weekend – forget the boards and spend quality time with the lady friend.
The Aquabumps gallery has a new exhibition up at the moment – and I’m pretty proud of it. The east wall is covered in aerial shots of Bondi…all from helicopters and shot last summer. It’s a perspective not many have seen before and hope you can come down for a look. People are blown away by the colour of the water and can’t believe we have such clear water in Bondi – yes, we do. Samudra are doing yoga + surf retreats up at Byron bay Nov 14-21 2009. They’re offering Aquabumps readers 10% off if you bring a friend. Bring the flex back to your surfing.
Probably the flattest day of the week today. You’ll struggle to get moving on those knee cappers out there. Even with a big chunk of fibreglass..yep…you’d have to be a highly motivated person to go surfing today…swim will wash the cobwebs off and advisable with the great weather.
Insane morning light today. At 6:10am strong hues of pink and orange smoked the skies. Jaw dropping stuff…and it all fades to flat greys in minutes.
Mentawai charter boat, Tengirri, still has a few spare spots on early season trips in 2010. I am going early season if you’re worried about not getting waves – I always get waves and have been 10 times (yeah spoilt). If you can’t book the whole boat out, email the boys and they’ll try fit you on with others (hopefully not hungry, hyper-active brazo pros). Email Ant [email protected] or check out their website www.tengirri.com
We had killer whales (or Orcas) in Bondi on Tuesday. I tried to shoot them but they didn’t want appear above the surface.
You will not be surfing until at least mind next week. There is NOTHING on the swell radar. Try not to annoy your partner too much and do some other form of exercise as a release.
It’s going to be 25degrees tomorrow. WOW!
Adios, ugios (sorry about the late one, I wasn’t down the beach!)
Yesterday’s one-hit-wonder-swell has ran out of gas. Bondi is probably the only place breaking this morning as it picks up all the fruits of a small south swell. In saying that, it’s only 1-2 foot, so nothing to get that excited about unless you weigh under 40 kilograms. I’d expect it to be pretty flat this afternoon, tomorrow and Friday. Perhaps a small weekend wave – but apart from that – a very quiet week down the beach.
This weather just keeps on banging on with the same tune – sunny, 20 degrees and moderate NW winds. Unbelievable. About 5 weeks in a row now. Freak winter weather.
Gallery Staff Wanted – 1 x full timer
The Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi is looking for a talented, smart, energetic, ultra-organised, beach obsessed, and photographically aware person to work in the gallery full time. This role is in the gallery…I repeat…in the gallery and not a photographer’s assistant role, so you won’t be holding a camera, hanging down the beach all day working on your tan. Phew, glad we got that out the way… now down to business. Read more
I must have read that swell chart upside down yesterday, as I surely didn’t expect 3-4 foot Bondi this morning. A new dead south swell has arrived and the 6am high tide was trying to pad it up so they didn’t close out – but – yep – they mostly shut down. Once again, it’s a day to go drive around and yee shall find.
I don’t think this swell is going to hang around…1 hit wonder…so best get em whilst they’re hot.
March this year I shot from choppers above Bondi (March 7th and 21st 2009). The best images from those shoots are now hanging in the Aquabumps gallery. Come see. We’re open every day (10am to 6pm), just not Monday. 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach. Still lost? check da map
PS – 26 degrees on Friday. RDO for sure.
Hope you filled your wave quotas last week, as this week the swell forecasts are looking grim. Good weather, but a dying East swell. From today on, the current 2 footers will fade into 0–1 footers so catchup on work.
Friday’s weather forecast is going to be 25 degrees though…maybe take that day off. Apart from that – not much else to write about. Been some hot waves around the place over the past few days, I’ve got a inbox of images from all over the NSW coastline. WOW, if you drove out of town last week – you scored.
ASP world tour boss, Brodie Carr was in Bondi this morning (just flew in from France). Could there be a tour stop in Bondi? Erm, na…sorry folks, not going to happen.
PS – don’t forget to follow us on TWITTER
We’ve been fed well by this consistent east swell all week. Yep, it’s still here and producing quality waves around the 4 foot mark at exposed beaches. Bondi wasn’t really happening at 2-3 foot and facing the wrong way, but I am sure you’d find something should you go have a good look around. SW winds 5-10 knots. High tide 2pm, Low tide 7:20am. 21 degrees on the land today, 17 in the water.
Small waves all weekend, but surfable (still East swell). 2-3 ft and NW winds. SMH are claiming Sunday to be 28 degrees and windy with a minimum of 10 degrees (18 degree variance). Is that a typo or sumpin?
On Wednesday night I launched a new photographic exhibition at the Aquabumps Gallery called AIRBORNE. They’re a series of aerial images taken from helicopters, an angle not commonly seen (especially through a huge lens). Shot last summer, the images blown up large show just how many people enjoy Bondi – and all the different shapes and sizes. You’re probably in one of the shots if you were down the beach on the 7th March or 21st March (Saturdays). The show is up and will be hanging for a few weeks – we’re open all weekend as usual 10-6 so drop by, 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach T:91307788. More info | Opening Night Images
Flexibility is the key to surfing – just ask Gerry Lopez. If you’re feeling a bit stiff, book yourself into some weekend yoga workshops at Samudra. They’re giving away a weekend workshop. Click here to enter | www.samudra.com.au
The winters magic continues today and surf conditions seem better than yesterday.
Waves are maintaining 4-5 foot and consistent. Offshore winds are still here, grooming the swell into nice lines.
Great setup really, just need to go somewhere with some decent banks. The Bra had a few waves, but I have to say most sets closed out.
Go for a drive out of town, you will score for sure. It’s just one of those days…
Mentawai charter boat Tengirri are still taking a few bookings for early season 2010. Good time to go before the other boats even start their season. Contact [email protected] or check out www.tengirri.com
Over and out::uge
All this spectacular, chunky, East swell is wasted on us in the east. Nowhere is handling it well.
Bondi faces too south and its hitting the beaches in the north end on a wrong angle – shuttin’ down.
A brief browse through the neighbouring beaches and I didn’t see anyone get a wave that didn’t close out.
What to do? Go north side perhaps, but I got feedback that it wasn’t that great over there either yesterday.
I am sure somewhere is smokin’ right now, you just gotta go have a good look and full tank of fuel.
Oh, and take it easy out there. The twins at Tama are taking victims…dramatic helicopter rescue yesterday as a surfer was lodged under the twins (Photos by Stirling Keen)
It had to rain eventually. Well it is winter and it hasn’t rained in about a month.
Today we have a new swell in town, one from the East. Even though it was quite consistent and packing plenty of punch, it was unsettled and lining up badly.
Bondi is pretty much useless on East swells anyway, they tend to just bash against the edge of Icebergs pool or fizz out the back of the Buckler.
I’d be checking out places like Manly, Bra etc for a wave today. Hell anywhere on the North side would be better than the 4 foot close outs we’ve got.
That NW wind is going to blow later 20 knots and the odd thunderstorm is forecasted. Good day to do some work.
Have fun, uge
PS – sunny and 23 degrees on Sunday. Plan something outdoors.
Yesterday’s decent waves have subsided. Isn’t it a great day to surf when the City to surf is on – not many can access the area! (or they’re too pissed to surf – how packed were the pubs around here – mad)
Today is only 2 foot and swell direction has more East in it.
High tide 10:50am, and with it filling up it should improve slightly. The lower tide waves this morning were lacking.
There is barely anyone out, so if you have the day off the beach isn’t such a bad idea – also seeing the sun is shining for its 4th week in a row – can’t go wrong.
East swell all week, picking up tonight, looks like a great week of surfing (at East exposed beaches i.e. not bondi)
The waves weren’t the highlight of the morning. Its small. 1 foot small. Good for the newbies who dominated the peak at South Bondi.
The sunrise was spectacular though. Yep another one. Amazing time of year, and amazing winter we’re having. Next week, again, looks to be mostly sunny.
More importantly it’s going to be sunny for the City to Surf fun run on Sunday. 150,000 mad pavement pounders will be winding their way to Bondi from the big smoke…don’t forget to come see the Aquabumps gallery right near the finish line. (and no party this year, we’re getting all mature and boring – I repeat no party this year – call off the riot squad)
New swell arriving tomorrow but with strong winds flanking it. ::uge
Seeing the swell forecast charts show a lot of zero’s it’s a bonus to get a surf in today. Bondi is squeezing the most out of this micro swell, most waves 1-2 foot and surfable(ish)
Me thinks grab a long (or fat) board and go for a paddle, it’s such a nice day out there.(again) High tide 8:30am, low tide 2pm, 20 degrees on the land today, fine, W/NW to 10 kts, tending NW/NE 10/15 kts in the afternoon. Water 17 degrees.
If you want to surf the Mentawais next year, yep, you gotta book now. Not a bad idea to get a charter early in the year, before most of the boats have started their season (e.g. Jan, Feb or March). Only a few trips left on Tengirri (the boat I boat each year). Look at www.tengirri.com or email [email protected] – even if you don’t have a full boat, they can try and fix you up with some other crew.
I don’t have to write about the amazing weather today, as that’s been pretty standard for the past 3 weeks. (Good for the local Bondi businesses after 2 really wet winters). I will write about the good little waves hitting Bondi’s corner though. It didn’t look enticing at sunrise, in fact I’d decided it wasn’t even worth a fat fish paddle. But around 7:45am the sets seem to be a little more consistent and larger. Mostly 2 foot, sometimes 3 foot if you were patient enough. We’ve had a good run lately (weather and waves) … let’s hope it continues ::uge
PS – follow us on twitter.
There’s actually a fun little wave on this morning even though it was quite messy (2ft, sometimes 3). Winds are NW, so it should be cleaner than it was.
The 7:20am high tide wasn’t the best time to paddle out, towards the lower 12:40pm tide it should improve. Still quite gutless.
City Surf Run is this weekend. I know this because of the massive tent that is currently under construction on Bondi beach. Also the number of joggers jamming in some last minute training was phenomenal. I mean if you didn’t start weeks ago you’re gonna hurt on Sunday.
Just to clarify, we’re NOT having a City to Surf party this year. Don’t get me wrong…last year we had fun entertaining 500 thirsty street partiers with half a pallet of Coopers Pale Ale (mm so refreshing)….well, it was a bit heavy with 75 riot police claiming our little shindig was going to escalate to a Cronulla riot and we even had a arrests and were shut way too early. (see photos). So no beer truck is dropping by this week and you’ll have to get creepy at one of the other hundred parties in Bondi. We are open for business though, 10am to 6pm on Sunday – so drop by after your run – all 150,000 of youse.
20 degrees today. 22 degrees on Friday – take the day off for sure! Adios amigos::Ugios
PS – Today’s slow shutter shots are intentional and may seem blurry – yep, so my camera isn’t broken and you don’t have to worry!
After hanging out in the country for a week it’s nice to come back to quiet winter Bondi with only a few out and 3 foot waves. The swell period is roughly 15 seconds, that’s big for oz kids, kinda like what you get in Indonesia. The swell origin is DEAD SOUTH, so beaches not facing dead south will think its tiny or flat as a pancake.
High tide was 6:40am, the before work session would not be best. Low tide is 12pm, so either side of low should show some quality especially in these perfect NW offshores. I know a couple of places that would be smoking right now and if I’d hadn’t been lying on the beach for the past 8 days (in the middle of winter) I’d be smokin’ the chumped Pulsar (with spinning rims of course) well out of town to score.
Also, at 6:20am this morning Bondi lit up pink and orange as a low hanging cloud put on a sunrise colour show. Nice. Great start to the day
The rest of the week is going have the same sunny weather (freaky) and 2-3 waves. Enjoy ::uge
