Bondi, 7:10am, 1st light highlighting an empty set

Frigid

The mercury dropped out this morning to a chilly 8 degrees. Fresh! The chill kept most people tucked up in bed as the beach was quite empty, early. I saw some fun waves at Bondi, at best, head high.

Right now (12:40pm) I look out the window and see cloudless blue skies boasting 14 degrees. It’s a really nice looking day – the air is just so clean today.

I just checked the swell forecast for the week and it looks small throughout.

Everybody loves the Mentawais. You know I do. World Champ Mark Occhilupo is running a Mentawai information night this Wednesday night 24th June at 6pm, The Tipple Bar and Bistro, Surry Hills. On the night you’ll be able to bid on some auction items, including a trip to the Ments. All proceeds going to A Liquid Future (non-profit organisation in the Mentawais). More information

  1. Nearly made me spit out my breakfast this morning, uge, 8c is just another ‘warm summer morning’ here in Edinburgh. Better for us runners 😉

I’ll be sure to mention to my wife when I have my next moan about moving back sooner than later.

  2. Do board riders clubs have lockdown on a council beach or area and approval to insult/standover surfers without water patrol/ event management /etc?, I understand the club scene ,what it represents and stands for the future of our sport and a platform for up and coming talent to aspire to professional career from local club level,my question is who is overseeing the regulations to these club events and some of the old guard that set a terrible example for the young, impressionable generation of groms exposed to “some” of these types. We have an eclectic mix of people whom all enjoy the public beach that is for all to use funded by tax payers, council rates, revenue raising, etc.,and board riders clubs pay to use or hire a space for a club event ,nippers pay and use water patrol to manage there beach events…and I do not want to smear all clubs with this comment as I’m sure there are many that run a well managed event…it concerns me when I see a event manager threatening surfers as they leave the beach for riding a wave through a board riders club event at a public beach when the management isn’t active on the beach or in the water instead drinking beers on the beach with the crew…..

    1. Hey Benton. You must be talking about south bra on Saturday? That was the worst example of a board riders event I have ever seen. The guys on the shore were broadcasting straight up physical threats to members of the public – “mate don’t paddle back out. A few of the boys want to have a word with you on the shore” or “ When you come in we’re going to snap your board in half” etc…

This was in the context of about 100 surfers being squashed onto one peak in the south corner and told they could only go left. To think that the event was probably justified on the grounds of benefit to the local community is laughable.
