Windy and chunky – that’s a good summation of what I saw down the beach today.
You’ll need to surf nooks and crannies tucked away from the Southerly. Its kinda offshore right now, SW, but it will edge around to the South later today and pick up to 20 knots.
Typical winter’s day. Rained 3 times on me whilst taking these pictures, and then short bursts of light kept things interesting. Barely anyone surfing…empty waves available on multiple peaks – it’s just a little junky and requires a lot of enthusiasm.
Have a good day. Tomorrow the swell is going to be much bigger (but not surfable around here).

Wanna surf Bondi on your own amongst 3 footers, read no further and best paddle out now. It’s not incredible as the early morning high tide put plenty of wonk in the faces. But it is all yours.
Couple of things to note about this week:
– In general, there will be waves breaking all week
– Wednesday will be the peak of the swell this week. Expect double head high (and messy)
– It will be windy all week – 15 knots plus most days (except Friday when I reckon it will be good)
Ciao :: uge
P.S. Don’t forget the Aquabumps Gallery is open on Mondays (today)
Not a bad week to be running around the beaches with a camera. Some decent moments worth capturing. This morning’s focus is on the sunrise, which splurged colour across our skies around 6:30am. There are waves as well, smaller than yesterday and still coming from a ESE direction. North winds all day, making it clean, but weak.
My theory is that you get good sunrises just before it rains. The clouds show warning of darker times approaching. It’s not a scientific theory, but 10 bones says it will rain sometime in the next 24 hours.
The swell will drop tomorrow and barely be surfable. Fortunately, a backup swell will arrive on Saturday and peak on Monday. That’s good.
Ok, nice chattin’ – back to work :: uge
PS – following us on Instagram? @Aquabumps come on in.
No two mornings are the same. I guess that is what draws me back down there every day after so many years.
Yesterday I couldn’t even get out of the car as the rain blanketed down. This morning a thick fog smothered Sydney, making it hard to see what’s going on out the back.
One thing is for sure, there’s waves beyond the fog. Plenty. It’s from the East-South-East and Maroubra was lovin’ it. Sets around head and a half. It’s also clean as the winds a gentle and offshore. Hang on, it’s also perfectly sunny and going to hit 20 degrees today. What more could you ask for? I am outta here…
I’ve been down the beach 3 times this morning to get the shots. Blanket rain over Sydney made those missions a little difficult. I could see semi-clean waves from the car park at Bondi. Perhaps shoulder high with the odd head high set. No one around. Wind looks to be coming from the North – which is good. Tomorrow should be fun.
All this rain got me thinking about Victoria and my little trip to Bells last week. Here’s a few shots that didn’t make it onto the site. Love the light angle down there in the morning. Gold.
A lot of good surfers come from Port Macquarie up on the North Coast of NSW. Usually that means good waves are to be found up there. Well, the Australian Surf Festival kicks off up there on Saturday 11th August and runs until the 25th August (2 weeks). I’ll be heading up there for a few days, check it out.
PS – Out the back of the Aquabumps Gallery is a 80 sqm hot desk farm. 1 office desk is up for grabs, $160 per week, work right on the beach and next to a hot gallery – contact us
There is swell but it’s horribly onshore. Bondi was a frothing mess at sunrise today. Pass.
There is quite a bit more East in the swell today, but the nemesis SSE wind is flanking, roughening up anything that you’d want to ride.
Tomorrow the winds will lighten and the swell increase. But Wednesday onwards we return to northerlies, that should clean the beach up.
This week marks the landmark demolition of the ugliest building in Australia – the almighty North Bondi SLSC. The club was established in 1904 and is one of the most prominent structures on our 900 metre shoreline. Architects Durbach Block Jaggers have come up with a more aesthetically pleasing structure that’s hopefully got a bigger bar than the last clubhouse. I know they’re still trying to raise money to complete the build…a few million in fact, so get involved.
Have a good week – work now, surf Wednesday/Thursday. Don’t forget our Aquabumps Gallery is open Mondays (that’s today!)

A new batch of south swell is slowing starting to trickle in…she’s a little junkie (short period) and winds are icy SW (right off the mountains down south).
On dark tonight it should be over head high. Tomorrow bigger and Sunday the biggest. Strong southerly winds are forecasted for a few days, so you will need to surf somewhere over the weekend that is protected from the wind. Looks big enough to wrap into joints like Manly on Sunday. The best day in the near future is going to be Tuesday with lighter winds and mid-range south swell.
Had dinner at The Hill Eatery last night, the new joint at North Bondi (39-53 Campbell Parade). The beef fillet is amazing. Take the lady friend and support local businesses please.
The Aquabumps Gallery is open all weekend 10-6pm. Hope to see you down here. I’m loving the clean winter light at the moment…so rich.

The claws of winter were digging deep this morning. I got down the beach in the dark and it was bitterly cold. My phone said it hit 2 degrees this morning (my phone seems to know everything). That wind was icy and cut through the layers.
Good lil’ bank down at Bondi for surfing. The current small south swell loves it (S 180 degrees). All-star cast paddled out for the early… the threat of an incoming south storm got everyone out in the waist to shoulder high conditions.
There’s a guy in Bondi who always accosts me on the street to write about his photography competition. He’s a nice guy, passionate photographer and window cleaner. I checked out his comp site last night and was impressed with the entries…really impressed. Then I read you have to be a non-pro to enter and I was even more impressed again. Wow. I see so many of you shooting pics down the beach, try entering the Shutterbug Awards (entries close 31st August 2012). So there you go Marc, Shutterbug up in the big lights…I’ll have a flat white please!
Last night I also watched the preview to Storm Surfers 3D featuring Tommy Carroll, Ross Clarke Jones and Benny Matson. That’s right, a 3-D surfing film. Ground breaking stuff. Some of the shots make you feel like you’re surfing 20 footers with Ross. Highly recommended…but…you gotta go to the cinema for the full 3D experience. Get Tix
Now, after you’ve done the above two items, just buy yourself the new Ben Howard Album and we will be best mates forever.
Hey there. Bondi loves these days. A wiff of dead south swell and we have a little peak on a couple of sand banks. It’s small and long period swell, translating to infrequent waves, but when they roll in, you may get one around shoulder high. Could take 15 – 20 minutes though, but it’s a nice day to be outside…so go have a look.
I love the Olympics. Not only do you get to see the Jamaican Badminton team fight it out but camera manufacturers release new models. Today’s shots are from the brand spakin’ new Canon EOS1dX. For the geeks… you can get around 14 frames per second out of that puppy. Dang!
Rain coming tomorrow…
Swell coming Friday but onshore this weekend.

After a short 24 hour stopover in Torquay I’m back up in Sydney to greet the good weather and fun, small waves. Real nice morning, soaked with burnt orange rays and barely any wind. Huge crew out in the water before sunrise, apparently a lot of tourists dropping by for the day. Hungry pack with 4 to 5 guys on most waves. Biggest set would be shoulder to maybe head high. Have a crack.
The surf forecast this week is looking good for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at this stage (it changes).
Have a good day :: uge
I reckon Bondi would be pretty small today. When I saw a bit of swell heading towards Victoria I thought I’d come down and shoot a few shots of Bells and Winkipop, just outside of Torquay. Haven’t been here in 12 years. The forecasted swell arrived, well most of it, it’s only getting bigger as the day progresses. Some of the local fellas reckon Joanna’s would be 15 foot right now.
Bells was working, bit burgerish, admittedly on the high tide…head’n’ half. Winkipop was the go, that wave is fun. Winki is just next door to Bells, close enough to switch breaks mid-surf. Winki has a long winding wall, it’s a right and hidden down the bottom of a big hill, protected from the icy wind. This morning it was glassy and the swell was lining up really well. Love to hang around and catch it on a lower tide today, but gotta fly home to Bondi as this same swell is coming up!
Torquay is such a cool little surf town. Very clean and friendly. It’s where all the big surfbrands have their head offices and flagship mega stores.
I’d also like to say it’s just as cold as Sydney down here (on the land). Ok, 12-14 degree water is real cold so you will need a hood, booties, gloves and thick steamer. Pretty hard to pick your mates in the line up – as everyone looks the same, white board, all black.
Surf should be good tomorrow in Sydney. Don’t forget the Aquabumps Gallery is now open Mondays (every day) 10-6.
All quiet’n’calm down the beach this morning.
A small wave limped into Bronte, super weak and not really worth it in my mind.
Bondi had knee to waist high dribblers. Handful of loggers out cruising.
Unfortunately for the weekend it’s going to remain tiny, ankle to knee high.
The next swell is due Tuesday where you should be riding something above your head. It’s going to a be a south swell too – which best suits Bondi.
Julian at Surfection Mosman is having a sale this weekend. 50% off sealed steamers – best get one for the morning chill!

It’s another nice morning. Kinda freaky with warmer temps as the wind blows from the North, which is uncharacteristic of this time of year.
The flimsy ENE swell is still here in town, but its weak and on the decline. I saw ‘waves’ at Bronte around waist high and Bondi has something dribbling in the south end.
I can safely say that the next 4 days are going to be real real small and Northerly winds. Real small. So today is your best option to take the log out for a while.
Double Colon Uge
Feels kinda warm doesn’t it? (Max 20 today) Those northerly winds consistently bring warmer temps that’s for sure. Lap it up.
Last night a storm hit, the wind blew and the car got a free wash. By sunrise it had blown away leaving shoulder high wind waves, best surfed over the hill at East facing beaches.
Enjoy today as she’s gonna rain tomorrow. This wind swell will evaporate tonight and tomorrow will be back to knee cappers. Friday will see another ENE wind swell (waist high), which will be smaller than today.
I just checked the 14 day forecasts, maybe something happening next Tuesday – but nothing significant you need to know about right now.

A really nice morning without surf. Plenty of colour over The Buckler around 6:40am.
As forecasted, the swell is tiny and gathering around your knee caps. Forget surfing. It’s also going to rain later today, so enjoy the winter sun right now.
Waves will be bigger tomorrow from a new choppy ENE swell. I suspect it will be weak and suited to beaches other than Bondi. Thursday onwards looks flat as…
There seems to be plenty of lawyers that read Aquabumps! We have around 30 IP Legal Eagles that responded to our request yesterday. Thanks.
If you want to see Ben Harper at the Opera House, the secret password to get in early is DIAMONDS.

These are the days that best favour Bondi. The swell is tiny and not many places would have anything breaking at all. Bondi, a swell magnet in south swell, this morning had fun waist to (a lil’ guys) chest high waves. Not many out and plenty of sunshine after 7am.
5 things you should know about the week ahead:
1. All week the surf is going to be small with no significant winter swells due
2. Wednesday and Friday may have a wave around shoulder high – suits Bondi. These days are the biggest of the week – but it’s not gonna be cranking
3. It’s going to rain on Friday
4. You can buy tickets to an acoustic evening with Ben Harper from today here
5. This weekend is perfectly sunny, a good one to book a weekend out of town
If you’re an IP lawyer and love Aquabumps, reckon you can get in touch with us? We may have some work for you. No – we’re not coming after you for using one of our images on your Facebook timeline – don’t worry!
Have a good day, go outside :: uge
Days like these are for the extremely motivated and over enthusiastic.
You’d need to be in order to peel yourself out of bed, wax up and paddle out there.
2 keen individuals surfed South Bondi this morning. I can’t say they got epic waves as it’s junkie, again, and onshore with plenty of rain ‘n’ gloomy skies.
For the 3rd day in a row the beach is deserted, ok, yep, there were some bodysurfers in the middle who arc up every time I say no one around. You dudes are very hard core.
Hope the surf improves tomorrow with SW winds. It will still be raining. Mostly sunny on Sunday.
Next week the surf looks very small…
Seeya :: uge
The conditions are all wrong for us around here…there is plenty of swell, Bondi waves broke around head to head’n’half – but it’s a junkyard. The banks can’t handle the size. I didn’t see a single person surfing from North Bondi to Bronte. That’s sayin’ sumpin’. In fact I reckon I saw 2-3 humans all morning…
If you must surf…I’d go to north east facing beaches, something over north side which is protected from the winds and the brunt of the swell.
Tomorrow and Saturday look better. Ankle biters on Sunday and Monday.
Man it’s been cold in the mornings. Maybe I’ve spent too much time in the tropics this year…
Big is not always best…especially around here with the lack of reef breaks.
The swell increase has arrived right on time, sets peaking around double head high, but it’s all over the shop.
Bondi, of course, is not surfable. A few body surfers swam out the back, but I didn’t see them do much.
It’s windy today, 20-25 knots of southerly. It’s also very cold because of that wind. Max 16.
Thursday – Big, but still windy
Friday – head high – head’n’half still with Southerlys
Saturday and Sunday – head high with cleaner conditions, SW winds
Out :: uge
We’ve got a fresh new supply of South swell in town. Waves are currently breaking above your heads, which is nice.
Shame about the wonk…this new swell is wobbly as, needing time to sort itself out.
Tomorrow will get even bigger…the biggest day in 2 weeks. I’d expect to see double head high waves tomorrow. You won’t be able to surf Bondi at that size, it will just shut down, but other options may present themselves.
Will this swell run up the beach and have a go at the Ice Skating Rink we’ve currently got set up down there…like previous years.
We have joined forces with Speedo to put out a new range of boardies and bikinis for this summer. They are looking great – especially on Rachel Finch. Our range will hit the stores 1st August 2012. Click here for sneak peak.

There is always something going on down at Bondi. This morning’s treat was the Sydney Philharmonic Choir singing as we went about our morning rituals. At less than 7 degrees around 6:30am, with frosty offshores, I bet they couldn’t wait to get off the beach.
Surf : today is knee to a freak chest high set. Tomorrow bigger and Wednesday and Thursday could get up to double head high (off a SE swell with howling SW winds). Let’s see how it lines up. Cold week ahead…rug up.
How good was the surf on Saturday just gone huh? Where did you surf? East-Nor-East facing beaches were pumping.
